Truer words have never been spoken. I've often wondered why people, institutions and systems that are routinely cruel, unfeeling, and uncaring are given the benefit of the doubt and considered normal, acceptable elements of society, but those who are victimised by their actions will have their smallest slip-ups shouted from the rooftops to make it seem like they're no saints either. Reading this quote on @hegodamask's post for Day 6 suddenly put everything into perspective. A terrible person does one good thing and we cut them some slack. A good person makes one mistake and they're tainted for good.

29. Favourite Quote

I don't know for certain and I'm too tired to think about this very thoroughly right now, but there are a couple of things Kuroko said that always stood out to me for personal reasons.

“So long as I don’t give up, the possibility of winning will never fall to zero.”

I just relate to that so deeply, because I am also very, very bad at giving up and will go for unlikely outcomes. It's a blessing and a curse, it causes both the highest highs and the lowest lows of my life. But in the early days of being a KnB fan, this quote just felt so validating to me. Because Kuroko was really making the most of it and it just made me want to tell everyone who laughed at me for saying the same: "See, it's not stupid. This is exactly what I've been trying to communicate, and yes I know it's fiction, but come on, look at this story". Not that I haven't also been validated for it in real life, my persistence and follow-through is usually what people appreciate about me, especially in adulthood I can point to many occasions when I was able to convince people that it wasn't worth giving up yet, because we just needed a bit more time, a bit more grit, just one more thing, and we would be where we wanted. But I guess in childhood it wasn't usually so, and it's probably because, well, children are children and I'm sure my communication was bad. (Horrendous.) But I was usually left alone when other people lost interest in trying and it was somehow devastating to me, because I could just see the goal so clearly, I just had no means of effectively communicating to others why I was so sure something was worth it. (The times I did convince someone but they ended up crashing harder because of it are another story of course, but equally if not more devastating.) And that's why this aspect of the story is so important to me, because I think Kuroko learns in a really similar way to me, to communicate better and eventually not be so butthurt and take things so personally, which really helps communication, haha.

I also want to include another quote:

“If you haven’t changed, that means you haven’t improved.” 

This is possibly the quote that has the most driving force in my fic right now, because I found aspects in it that I never would have anticipated and it took a long time to get there and accept that's where the story was going, so. Now it's a really multifaceted and interesting quote to me. And it has the power to say something that was already in KnB but I think I've got something really important to add to it, just to enhance the themes, to take them even further. "Change" and "improve" are really fascinating concepts and the story is already of the opinion that strength isn't only what is traditionally considered to be powerful. I just have an angle... Well, actually many angles to that, which I can't help but feel should be brought to light in this particular setting and characters.
