So I quit writing for a long time because I've been busy with school. Recently I decided to go back to writing because I miss it, but then I remember what my greatest weakness was: descriptions. I suck at it. I don't know how I'll describe what my MC looks like without info dumping it or what the enchanted mansion my MC will be staying at looks like or the mythical creatures they'll be encountering someday. My writing for action is okay, but I just really suck at descriptions. Got any advice?
Check out the assortment of stuff in this tag, and save these:
Describing New Settings
How to Make Your Descriptions Less Boring
How to describe a character mid scene
Definitely look for visual resources and keep some around to look at when you need a kick of inspiration. Find a person who looks like your character, images of old mansions from the era you’re thinking of, and concept art of mythical creatures to draw your descriptions from.
Then practice, practice, practice, and read some authors known for being creative in their descriptions. Trying to see the world like certain authors and poets do is wild.
