i get the last wish is all the rage and i get why, its a very good movie, but i gotta say, just catching the tail end of shrek 2 today reminded me quite firmly it was easily the one in the franchise i enjoy the most

Wang Yibo's New Year's Eve Stage "Like the Sunshine"｜Visual Effect Concept Analysis

"Sunlight breaks through the clouds, awakening thousands of creatures, let's meet each other..."

On December 31, Wang Yibo's new song "Like the Sunshine" made a surprise appearance at Dragon TV's New Year's Eve concert. Who was surprised by the young man dressed in white? The stage was conceptually designed and choreographed by young dancer Chen Zihao, and KINOi Yang Qian Studio was responsible for the overall visual image creation and production.

"Like the Sunshine" is the second stage designed by KINOi after "Twenty Nine" using two-dimensional hand-painted animation. The stage is a new story scene created with the theme of "hope, encounter, sunshine". Through the integration of dance and new media visual art, the whole performance space is very romantic and freehand.

According to the temperament of the overall stage, we use black and white as the main color tone in image design, and use the art style of illustrations to describe a familiar dream of life; use scene elements such as raindrops, waves, forests, and seas of clouds to convey the concept of the earth's ecology and environmental protection. concept. In terms of stage design, we use a U-shaped line screen as the visual background of the overall stage. Through the cooperation of lighting and images, the performers are completely integrated into the animation space of the two-dimensional stage. When performing, performers can freely shuttle inside and outside the line screen, and the whole stage picture is full of fairy-tale sense of drama, substituting the audience into a different sensory world.

Germany is wrestling with the legacy of author Karl May, whose fictional Native American hero, Winnetou, embodies the Germans' love affair with the Wild West.

Another day, another online outrage over "cancel culture." German Twitter lit up with instant indignation this week after a German publisher announced it was pulling two children's books from its line-up amid accusations of racism and cultural appropriation.

Both books were inspired by Wild West stories from the wildly popular, and increasingly controversial, 19th-century German writer Karl May.

The books imagine the childhood of May's most famous creation: the fearless Apache brave Winnetou, a fictional Native America chief who made his first appearance in 1875 and whose adventures have been retold in numerous novels — May's books have sold around 200 million copies worldwide — as well as in several movies and even an animated series.

The new titles were to accompany the release of "The Young Chief Winnetou," which hit German theaters August 11. Now there are calls to pull the film as well.

The publisher, Ravensburger Verlag, citing "lots of negative feedback" around the "romanticized" and "clichéd" depiction of Native Americans in the books, dropped the titles from its program and apologized if it had hurt anyone's feelings.

The blowback was quick, and predictable. #Winnetou has been a trending topic online since with the majority of posters furious over what German tabloid Bild, with characteristic restraint, termed the "woke hysteria" that was "burning the hero of our childhood at the stake".

Germany's Wild West obsession

Behind the online fury lies a very real, and particularly German, love affair with the Wild West, an affection that can be traced directly back to Karl May and his idealized depiction of 19th-century America.

May's characters — the noble, heroic Winnetou and his white-skinned "blood brother" Old Shatterhand, a German immigrant land surveyor — are as present in the German popular imagination as the figures in Grimm's Fairy Tales.

You'll find Winnetou books and records in many German households. A series of Winnetou films made during the 1960s are still staples on German TV. There are Karl May-inspired Wild West festivals and theme parks across the county where families gather to dress up as cowboys and Indians on stage sets of saloons and hitching posts. The most popular, in Bad Segeberg, attracts about 250,000 people a year.

That, for many, is the problem. Critics say May's vision of Native American culture, as a sort of prelapsarian utopia, is little more than a convenient fiction that ignores the nastier truths about the genocide of Indigenous people by white settlers.

In the broader discussion around cultural appropriation and who has the right to tell which stories, it doesn't help May's case that he was a white man writing about a culture of which he had no first-hand knowledge.

May only visited America once, after he was already a successful novelist, and didn't get further west than New York.

The Winnetou films, including the most recent, all feature white actors in the Indigenous roles. The most famous Winnetou is Pierre Brice, a white Frenchman who played the Apache chef in nearly a dozen films from 1962-68 as well as in a TV series in the 1980s.

The 'noble savage' stereotype

At its core, the criticism of May and Winnetou, and the reason Ravensburger pulled its books from the shelves, is that the books and their characters are retreads of the old "noble savage" stereotype.

May's Natives are not real people, the argument goes, but idealized, near-magical figures whose main role is to sacrifice themselves for the benefit of the white protagonist.

There's definitely some truth to that. Winnetou is more superhero than flesh-and-blood character, and, oddly sexless (though some readers detect a strong homoerotic vibe in the "brotherly love" between the Apache an Old Shatterhand).

But labeling May and his imaginary America as racist and imperialist ignores how radical, for its time, Winnetou was. A century before Kevin Costner's 1990 epic Western film "Dances with Wolves," Karl May flipped the traditional depiction of "wild Indians" and "civilized cowboys," portraying Indigenous Americans (at least Winnetou and his friends) as the heroes, and white settlers mainly as the villains.

German society does not lack for racism but, thanks in large part to Karl May, Native Americans are held in near-universal regard, even if the image the average German has of Indigenous people bears little relation to reality.

In his 2020 book "Indianthusiasm," historian and Indigenous studies scholar Hartmut Lutz, a sharp critic of Karl May, admits the author's escapist fantasies have also spurred interest in Indigenous culture and inspired generations of German academics to find out the truth behind the tales.

In the meantime, anyone who wants real insight into Indigenous life and imagination should check out "Reservation Dogs," the hilarious series on Hulu about teens growing up on a Native reservation in Oklahoma, that features all Indigenous writers and directors, as well as an almost entirely Indigenous cast. Or watch "Night Raiders" from Canadian filmmaker Danis Goulet (Cree/Metis), which uses the metaphor of dystopian sci-fi to address the traumatic legacy of Canada's residential school system.

Looking to Karl May and Winnetou expecting an authentic picture of Native experience is like reading Hansel and Gretel for tips on child rearing.

Notes (on yesterday's post):

1. The Adventurers Club of NY was a private men's club founded in 1912 by one A. Hoffman.

Its main functions were monthly dinners & a weekly lunch.

Their main rule was that "No one talks about Fight Club!"

There's complete silence on most of their activities.

Yet, for a secretive group, they certainly went out of their way to announce their events.

First, they published The Adventurer, a monthly newsletter that ran until 1960!

Then they had a weekly radio show, the Gold Seat Associates, where club members spoke of the most exciting moment of their lives.

The Adventurers Club finally faded out during the 1970s.

2. Lassie is the star of an American TV series (1954 to 1973) & several movies.

'She' (actually male dogs were used!) is a smart & fearless collie living in a Virginia farm with her companions - human or otherwise.

Later in the show, Lassie worked with forest rangers - out in the wilderness!

There's also an animated series that brought Lassie's heroic acts into the 2000s.

Lassie's latest film came out in 2022...

3. Mary V. Haws wrote several novels set in the southern states before the Civil War, which began in 1861.

(But, this was actually only after many decades of rising tensions - mostly on the subject of slavery.

It only ended after 4 years & some 610,000+ deaths!!)

Haws completed her last book at the age of 88 - while she was quite blind!

4. Other books by Bert Terhune are: "World's Great Events", "Famous American Indians", "Wonder Woman in History", "Around the World in 30 Days" & "Superwomen."

We now celebrate when our politicians started signing the official Declaration of Independence, on July the 4th.

But, it took some time before all of the congressmen actually did so...

England didn't really 'recognize' our victory until the Paris Treaty of 1783!

Even then, Britain tried to 'reacquire' its 13 colonies during the War of 1812...

9. HPL seemed aware of his writing limits.

His evoking of imagery & emotion rested upon his skill at following strict poetic structures & his own aesthetic taste.

Lovecraft thought it more important to be formally correct, rather than to be creatively interesting.

10. As to Howard's personal writing style, it's actually his own copying of the forms of A. Pope & J. Dryden.

Pope was 1 of the most prominent writers of the 1700s.

Teru used to be left handed but was taught to use his right because it was traditionally still seen as devilish by the priests, so now he uses his right and can't use his left for shit, he also has the worst most ugly and uncomfortable looking hand posture when holding a pencil but he somehow knows how to force better beautiful hand posture in front of people. it's terrifies Akane every time

in early mornings Tiara likes to sit at the corner to the kitchen and listen to Kou talk to himself, it's one of the only ways she's able to know how her brother feels.

Tiara steals and plays on Kou's switch (it's fine because Kou isn't much of a gamer) and loves to run around and catch Pokemon so her brothers got her let's go!Eevee (they had to fight over which one she would like Kou said Pikachu and Teru said Eevee) and she can't stop playing with them! she nearly cries everytime a Pokemon faints so Teru battles for her (and secretly plays some for her character to go farther also he's a game addict) her favorite type is Fairy!

Sakura barely gives a shit whether her skirts flair up in the wind but she does make sure they don't just to be modest, also it comes naturally for nature to never ruin her hair or clothes idk...

Amane used to feed a stray cat and thought of the cat as his only other company, the cat went missing though

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks...

No need to apologize! It's a fun question!

I have a lot of favorites when it comes to characters so I'll name the top ten off the top of my head.

Okay, so on no specific order...

Kaldur'ahm (Young Justice), as a kid watching this show I always thought he was pretty cool from his fighting style to his personality and I still do to this day. As I got older, I also started to see more... complex? Like there's more to him than we got in the show.

Raven (Teen Titans), okay I love all the Titans and Starfire is actually tied with her but I'm gonna talk about Raven. First, her powers. I always wanted her powers as a kid. I really love magic. She was pretty cool in my eyes. I also love her personality, always so quiet and stoic, but still had her fun moments with the others. I also love her color scheme. Purple and black are two of my favorite colors.

Kida (Atlantis: The Lost Empire), she is still my favorite Disney Queen and Princess to this day. Atlantis is my favorite Disney movie, there are few Disney movies I can watch back to back and not get tired of it and Atlantis is one. With Kida, she is not only gorgeous, but badass. She always cares for her people and wanted to do whatever she could to help them. And her relationship with Milo is just so precious to me. I will always love the hand holding scene.

Layla/Aisha (Winx Club), she is my favorite out of the six. I actually didn't have a favorite at first before she came on the scene because I loved all the girls and then she came on and it was like "HER". She's just so caring and sweet and fun. Her fairy outfit is my favorite outfit which is a surprise for me at that time because as a kid, I had this dislike for green but I think she made me feel better about the color. And I still find it unfair what they did to my boy Nabu. I didn't watch the show past season 3, so I found out much later about Nabu and wanted to fight. I loves him and Layla together.

Haru Katou (Balance Unlimited), everyone was more on the rave about Daisuke, but Haru? Haru easily became my favorite because I thought he was prettier and I really liked how he is as a character. Sympathetic, fair, has a bit of a temper, and passionate about what he does. He's even though the story was about Daisuke, his role wasn't overshadowed to me in the overall plot.

Miruko (My Hero Academia), of course, I'm gonna talk about her. Her and Midoriya are tied for #1 for me, but I gotta talk about my girl, Miruko. She is a badass. She is a tiny rabbit woman who fights with just speed and strength. She's confident and fearless. And I love that even though she has thing about teamwork, she isn't a character that refuses to work with others when the need arises. She's also a character to me that I feel like there's more to her. Like there's other deeper details to her that could be explored.

Nico (Nanbaka), overall all the characters from that series are great. Nico, he is precious and a badass. Like he looks like he wouldn't harm a fly but he could and will kick your ass. His love for anime and video games is adorable.

Tanjiro (Demon Slayer), he is compassionate and kind hearted, and best big brother. Also, gotta give it up to that forehead and nose of his. I also love that he straightforward and isn't a pushover, he has this low tolerance for tomfoolery and when he gets angry, he gets angry. He's also quite open minded to his foes. He doesn't treat them all one way. Even of a demon is pure evil, he takes in on their actions, their upcoming and their behavior before considering "is this an enemy I will loathe for the rest of my life or have they at least deserve a bit of sympathy".

Kat Elliott (Wendell & Wild), first off her design is kickass and you can tell they took care into her overall look. It's not often we see black goth characters in media, but Kat is a real treat. She is a rebel, always had this shield up throughout the movie but as the story went on it was clear that she just vulnerable and needed someone to care for her and her relationship with her parents did make me cry because that is a loving family right there.

Kym (Legacies), I find it out unfair how long her appearance in the show lasted because I thought she was a great character. I have a hot take that I need to get out of my chest, sorry it came to your blog lol. But as much as I'm dying to hear the revamp production of debut tv, I can't help feeling it will be a bit cringe because that's exactly how I felt listening to certain songs in fearless tv (fifteen, today was a fairy tale, etc) so I just imagine 32 old Taylor singing 'Drew looks... at me...' and lmao. I think that's probably also why she didn't gave us any new mv of fearless nor performed it as it did with red, being a much mature album. Am I weird for feeling weird about it? Idk... I hate to admit it but I kinda prefer the original version of those with her teen baby voice singing about teen love because it feels more real and relatable to me, at least fearless and debut.

interesting take and i don't completely disagree tbh, i can totally see some parts of it being a little strange to hear being sung in her 32 year old voice now. i personally didn't have a problem with listening to fearless tv because i thought she did a good job of having her voice be the same? it still kinda feels like teenage taylor to me idk, so i can't see me having an issue with debut, but who knows. i can totally understand why it would be strange though, it's a valid opinion.

my thoughts/stuff that stood out to me the second time seeing the movie:

• the intro “it’s fearless…big reputation…” etc. etc.

• taylor vibing with paul during ybwm 🥹🫶🏼

• vocals were sooo damn good on everything. how are there people who think she can’t sing? they don’t have ears. you don’t have to like her music, but you can’t deny she has an excellent voice.

• stage presence blew me away yet again. how are there people who say she can’t dance or act? she doesn’t just sing, she puts on a whole damn show up there! it’s so clear what her vision was for this tour, down to the polishing plates until they gleam and glisten, the stage pieces lighting up right as they’re being stepped on, etc. and it was executed to such a high level.

• nothing was skimped on, costumes, light up bracelets. why? because she loves us so much and missed getting to be on tour. it really had been a long time coming.

• each era slayed in their own way. speak now = magical, fearless = nostalgic, reputation = sexy, midnights = moody, folklore = fairy princessy, evermore = woodsy/witchy, red = trendy, 1989 = exciting because tv is about to come out.

• evermore era was so good
