“Last summer, anti-drought actions multiplied. This summer, activists will act with even more fearlessness and creativity: cutting off hoarders’ water supplies, putting golf courses out of action, dismantling megabasins, squatting the swimming pools of the ultra-rich and the air-conditioned offices of their insurers, banging saucepans outside pool manufacturers offices, building beaver dams to revive our rivers and their banks. Our inventiveness must have no limits.”
This kind of activist communique follows two years of unseasonable drought across France. As of 30 June, 42 of France’s 96 mainland départements (administrative divisions) contain at least one area with water restrictions. 15 of these 42 are officially in crisis, meaning water usage is restricted to priority functions: health, civil security, drinking water and sanitation.
It’s no surprise, then, that French climate groups are escalating their tactics in the fight over water. In August last year during water restrictions in Vosges in eastern France, activists drilled holes in jacuzzis at a holiday resort. Over the winter, others sabotaged artificial snow canons at Clusaz, south-eastern France, while others set up a ZAD (autonomous zone) in the area, citing the winter drought as their motivation.
The most contentious of these groups is Les Soulèvements de La Terre, or ‘Earth Uprising’, which is currently waging 100 days of action against “water hoarders” across the country. In response, the French state is cracking down on so-called eco-terrorism – and hard.
[...]
Earth Uprising doesn’t use the word sabotage to describe its militant action. In French jurisprudence, sabotage denotes an attack on infrastructure that’s vital to the “fundamental interests of the nation”, Basile explains. “A cement production site or a megabasin is the opposite – it’s private infrastructure which puts the possibility of a living future on the earth in peril.” Instead, activists prefer the term “disarmament”.
Victor Cachard, author of A History of Sabotage, adds that this term is also a reference to the actions of the ecological movement in the US against the industries building weapons for the Vietnam War and later the Gulf War. “There was the idea among ecological activists to join their environmental struggle with their anti-war struggle, as they recognised that war pollutes,” he says.

Phyllis Coates, who portrayed the fearless reporter Lois Lane in the first season of Adventures of Superman, died on Wednesday at the age of 96. She passed away from natural causes at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California.
Coates was born as Gypsie Ann Evarts Stell in Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1927. She moved to Los Angeles as a teenager and started her career as a chorus girl and a vaudeville performer. She was discovered by comedian Ken Murray, who taught her comedy and put her in his variety shows.
She signed a contract with Warner Bros. and appeared in several films and shorts, including the popular Joe McDoakes comedy series. She also starred in Republic Pictures serials and B-movies, such as Panther Girl of the Congo, Girls in Prison, I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, and The Incredible Petrified World.
But her most memorable role was Lois Lane, the intrepid journalist who worked alongside Clark Kent (George Reeves) at the Daily Planet and often got into trouble with Superman’s enemies. Coates first played Lois in the 1951 film Superman and the Mole Men, which was later re-edited into a two-part episode of the TV series.
She continued to play Lois in all 26 episodes of the first season of Adventures of Superman, which aired from 1952 to 1953. She did most of her own stunts and earned about $350 per episode. She said in an interview that she and Reeves had a good chemistry and that they “were very much alike — we didn’t take ourselves too seriously”.
However, Coates decided not to return for the second season, despite being offered a higher salary. She wanted to pursue other projects and was replaced by Noel Neill, who had played Lois in two earlier Superman serials starring Kirk Alyn.
Coates later regretted leaving the show and said that she “didn’t realize the importance of it” at the time². She remained friends with Reeves until his death in 1959. She also befriended Jack Larson, who played Jimmy Olsen, and attended several Superman conventions with him.
Coates continued to act in films and TV shows until the late 1990s. She had guest roles in Perry Mason, Lassie, Gunsmoke, The Andy Griffith Show, The Munsters, and many others. She also played Lois Lane’s mother in an episode of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman in 1994.
Coates was married three times and had two children. She is survived by her daughter Laura Press, who said that her mother “gave a lot to the industry” and that “her career passed through so many genres”.
Phyllis Coates will always be remembered as TV’s first Lois Lane, a role that inspired generations of fans and actresses. She brought charm, wit, and courage to the character and made her a worthy partner for Superman.

Angelic servants of battle itself, the Valkyrie are born fully formed within the Maelstrom from the souls of soldiers who wish beyond all wishes to keep fighting. While most Valkyries can be found in the service of various Chaotic deities--typically, but not limited to, gods of war, valor, and courage--many instead act as independent agents or even cosmic warriors for hire, gifting their skills to anyone who can pay their strange prices. Valkyrie are responsible for gathering souls worthy of being transformed into Einherjar, plucking them from battlefields all over the Great Beyond to bring them into the Maelstrom, baptizing them in the chaos to transform them into immortal, nigh-invincible soldiers.
To this end, Valkyrie can Plane Shift themselves at will, taking with them only their gear and whatever mount they happen to be astride (typically some variety of fantastic steed, like a pegasus or the centipede-esque sleipnir). They instinctively seek out battles, typically shortly after they’re over... but they’re no strangers to joining battles that are still in progress. Able to cast both Aid and Death Ward at will to make their allies or themselves fearless and immune to death effects, Valkyrie practically exist to arrive from above with a dramatic spear thrust downwards into a huge monster, turning the tide of battle. They can even provide their own dramatic background, able to Call Lightning Storms 3/day!
Equipped with a permanent Deathwatch, Valkyrie take stock of the allies they’ve chosen, deciding which deserve to live and fight another day and which shall accompany them to Valhalla the Maelstrom. Those who still show a drive to grow into ever more powerful warriors are graced with a Heal to restore them to peak condition, or even a Breath of Life if they perish before their mission is completed. To those whose lives have come to a close, a Valkyrie can Choose the Slain, drawing the soul of a willing creature into their weapons to later transport them to the Maelstrom to transform them into Einherji. This power only works on a willing creature; an eternity as a deathless warrior is one that must be chosen. There’s no limit to the number of souls a Valkyrie can transport at once, but choosing the slain only works on a fresh body, and thus they can use Gentle Repose at will to preserve the freshly-fallen until after the battle is done and there are no further enemies.
But how do they get rid of said enemies? Mostly, a lot of charge attacks. Though they’re expert fliers, Valkyrie are built to have steeds beneath them, their specific feats--namely Ride-By Attack and especially Spirited Charge--making them extremely dangerous when they’re mounted, and as such even if their current mount is killed or otherwise incapacitated, a Valkyrie can summon a Sleipnir to their side 1/day. As CR 11 creatures that are extremely fast and all-terrain with a flurry of natural attacks and Prismatic Spray 3/day, the summoned steed is dangerous enough on its own... but once the angel of battle hops on, things get so much worse.
Valkyrie who aren’t blasting foes with their called lightning (5d6 Electricity damage) mainly use +2 Returning Spears, able to make up to four attacks a round (five if they’re under the effects of their 3/day Divine Power) in melee, or one attack a round from a range, each dealing 1d8+8 damage (1d8+12 under Divine Power) which triples on a critical hit. Decent! But nowhere near as scary as it can be. I don’t mean their Power Attack or Vital Strike, mind, though those certainly factor in; I mean Spirited Charge. This delightful little feat doubles damage done with their weapons during a mounted charge, which is tripled AGAIN if that damage is a critical hit. An especially lucky Valkyrie may deal upwards to 96 damage in a single full-round action (120 under Divine Power), which is a hell of an opening act! And because their summoned Sleipnir has Air Walk constantly, they can easily skitter right back into the air and charge into the next enemy next round.
However, ‘enemy’ can be subjective; you may notice that they’re Chaotic Neutral. Good and Evil don’t matter to them, so it’s a complete coin toss on whether or not they’ll fight for OR against Lord Deathmonger von Dogstomper in the climactic assault on his Kingdom of Vilebad. It can be a little disheartening for Good-aligned rebels against a wildly evil force to see literal angels descend from above and begin massacring them, one would assume.
As a Ghoul, Scarlett is able to shapeshift into a crow (and we call her Crowlett!), but there might be some crow traits to her normal self as well. Here's how subtly Scarlett resembles a crow, despite not always using her crow form!
The Carrion Crow
The type of corvid Scarlett turns into is the Carrion Crow, one of the most known species. Carrion crows are capable of eating anything they want: from seeds to bugs to fruits, some even steal eggs from other birds' nests and some also feed off dead animals.
Her crow body is around 46 centimeters big, and her wings can reach 96 centimeters fully expanded. Her weight in this form is around 500 grams.
In appearance, this crow has a completely black plumage, with a glossy sheen of green or purple hues under a certain light. Beak and legs are also all-black, and she possesses purple irises, just like in her human form.
5 Shared Facts
🕊 Connected to Crowlett and Scarlett!
1. Good memory
They say you don't want a crow as an enemy. Crows have a great memory and are capable of remembering people's faces for long periods of time, connected to their behavior. In other words, crows can remember good people and be friendly to them, even make them small gifts; but they can also remember mean people and hold grudges. In the case of the latter, they can go as far as to tell other crows about the threat to attack in flocks, so they would have a bunch of crows ruining their day until they're gone.
Scarlett has hyperthymesia, meaning that she has a perfect memory and remembers absolutely everything about her life, from minimal experiences to all the people she's met along the way. Lore-wise, this was given by Karl after her transformation; however, she uses this 'ability' daily to remember people and their intentions to keep herself and others safe, much like crows do. She holds grudges and resentment towards those who hurt her, and is much more friendly and affectionate with those who don't mean a threat, including the gift-giving part. The one difference is that she'd rarely gossip to attack in a group(?), and would rather keep lots of distance or manage to get some kind of revenge herself if the betrayal is too deep.
2. Witty and crafty
Crows have a good ability when it comes to problem-solving and making use of tools, even creating new ones. Additionally, crows can be strategic and plan ahead to always be prepared.
Scarlett's 'tools' may be more abstract but equally functional; like the knowledge gained from her memories and how she applies it to social situations (including seeing patterns in bad-intentioned people, fixing situations that didn't work well in the past, etc). She's very observant overall, keeping in crucial details in order to not be caught by surprise with an inconvenience that could have been avoided.
3. Safety over emotions
It has been noted that when a crow dies, other crows gather around it as though they are holding a funeral for the deceased. While it seems likely, in reality they are scanning the area to figure out the cause of its death and be aware of any potential danger they could be facing to avoid being the next victim.
In Scarlett's case, her emotions always come second, and they come last in dangerous situations. Whether it's a loved one in danger or herself getting hurt, she'd seek safety and getting away from danger first and foremost, by all means necessary, no matter who else gets hurt in the way.
4. Fearless
It's not like they don't experience fear, but crows are willing to harass or fight a larger predator if the situation calls for it. Usually, they would gather in flocks to scare a predator off or attack them in group, but they also do so alone. In fact, they can just tease other animals for their own amusement (by pulling their tail or pecking them from behind).
It's not news that Scarlett often challenges a higher, more powerful creature by herself, using only her determination and strong personality in her favor. Likewise, it's not like she doesn't have any fear, but her personal reasons may take over and push her forward. Also, teasing may be one of her favorites hobbies as well—
5. Shiny / Tiny
It was proven that crows being collectors is a myth, but that doesn't mean they are indifferent to shiny things. Their keen eye catches shiny objects easily and it plays with their curiosity, so they pick it up, play with it or hide it from the public eye. It's also usual that they find entertainment with other small things like rocks or bottle caps.
I decided to leave the 'myth' part of this in Scarlett, and make collect the shiny and tiny things she finds. Crowlett loves shiny things because her sight catches them more easily in that form, and Scarlett is more fond of tiny things because she can hold them and feel big and powerful protective next to them. Tiny and shiny things? Pure perfection. She will be fangirling so hard.
While many of these traits can easily be found in anyone, some aren't very 'compatible' with her personality, so they just reference her crow side for the irony only (like no matter how cool she acts, something tiny can turn her into a child (?)). Thanks to her crow side, Scarlett can be more just than a loud, beefy, distrustful and lowkey dangerous Ghoul, lmao—

“I, Vhalena Raenyeros, first of my name and heir of the great house of the Phoenix, I pledge my loyalty to King Viscerys and his named heir, the Princess of Dragonstone Rhaenyra Targaryen. ”
It was almost impressive, and borderline amusing how the third born daughter of the Raenyeros family Vhalena, always seemed to be one of the most mysterious figures in the Kingdoms. Despite the fact she was so well known, for aside from her powerful family and birthright, she appeared to have it all. She possessed a beauty, elegance, intelligence, and grace to rival all of the finest ladies in the realm.
But also underneath that beautiful mask, there laid an underlying strength, a desire to explore, a fearlessness in the face of danger, and an intimidation factor that would put some of the strongest knights in Westeros to shame. It was widely known that she was vastly admired, by both genders all across the kingdoms. Even in royal court.
Daughter of the acting Maester of Law, and the second richest house in the kingdom, Vhalena held much influence in the realm. Despite the limit to a woman’s power in Westeros, and the seeming longing Vhalena holds for something more. She using her many secret qualities and strengths, willingly walks into the lair of the dragon.
Let’s see how this, distress causing damsel, handles herself in the Dance of the Dragon.

”200,000 Steps on the Lone Star Hiking Trail” by Sergio Chapa, from the May/June 2023 issue of Texas Observer magazine:
I grew up in northwest Austin at the edge of the Texas Hill Country, where hiking through the woods and playing in creeks were daily activities. So, I’ve always been an “outdoors person.” After moving to Houston for a journalism job, I quickly began running and biking along the city’s mostly concrete-lined bayous. Then an environmental activist told me something intriguing: Just an hour north of the traffic and skyscrapers of downtown Houston is the 96-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail, the longest footpath in Texas.
During April 2020, I began a quest to hike the full trail along with a friend in my “COVID bubble.” It was a sunny and unseasonably hot day as we embarked from mile marker zero inside the 163,000-acre Sam Houston National Forest. So early in the pandemic, we hiked without seeing another person, hearing a car on the road, or spotting an airplane in the sky. The only sounds were chirping birds, squirrels and lizards scurrying, and the wind blowing through the leaves.
It was a Coronavirus-safe activity and I was hooked.
On maps, the national forest is depicted as a massive patch of public land. But on the ground, hundreds of U.S. Forest Service tracts are broken up by private timberlands, farms and ranches, and a growing number of rural homes and subdivisions. Mostly flat to rolling terrain, the forest is laced with creeks as well as the east and west forks of the San Jacinto River and the not-so-scenic lanes of Interstate 45.
Starting near Richards and ending near Cleveland, the Lone Star Hiking Trail proper is 96 miles through the forest with five optional loops adding another 32 miles. Depending on one’s height and weight, that’s roughly 200,000 steps. Given a pace of about three miles per hour, it would take roughly 32 hours to hike the entire trail nonstop. Hiking about eight hours per day means less than a week of hiking and camping.
But that’s not the path I chose.
It took me sixteen trips with various friends over two years to hike the entire trail. Confession: We weren’t disciplined about it; sometimes weeks or months lapsed between forays. Most often, I’d park my car at one of the 15 trailheads and we’d hike for five or six miles and then head back. On every visit, the trail provided valuable relief with its clean air, social distancing, and an escape from the four-wall confinement of lockdown and stress. Our slower approach allowed us to experience the forest in all four seasons.
Spring is marked by fresh light green leaves, wildflowers and white color pops of dogwood and magnolia blossoms. The summer can be brutally hot, but it’s the best time to enjoy Lake Conroe or Double Lake. The fall brings orange, red, and yellow hues as purple beautyberries and red yaupon holly berries ripen in the understory. Pine trees and oaks stay green during winter while colonies of colorful mushrooms and fungus sprout on the forest floor.
I shared our hikes on Twitter and Instagram, and the Lone Star Hiking Trail became a hit with my social media followers too.
It’s much easier to hike the trail virtually. To do it in person, you need plenty of water, snacks, insect repellent, spare socks, powder, paper towels and wipes, and willingness to rough it, since there are no bathrooms or vending machines aside from spartan amenities at the Stubblefield and Double Lake campgrounds. Good walking shoes and long pants with high socks reduce risks of scratches, bug bites and ticks. Snakes on this trail mostly flee from people. However, mosquitoes and spiders are fearless.
Early morning hikes meant the person in the lead breaks overnight cobwebs. Scat with fur signaled coyotes and bobcats, but the most worrisome signs were the wallows and rooting of feral pigs. My worst fear was encountering hogs, which can attack when frightened or startled. Luckily, we never saw any.
Sam Houston is one of the state’s four national forests created by Congress during the Great Depression. The timber industry previously clear-cut large swaths of the Piney Woods. State lawmakers bought hundreds of barren tracts in 1933, with the intent of adding them to the national forest system. President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Angelina, Davy Crockett, Sabine, and Sam Houston national forests in October 1936. Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps planted millions of trees. The U.S. Forest Service gave the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club permission to build the trail in 1967. The trail and all its loops were complete by 1978.
It’s big enough that you can easily get lost. I’m an experienced outdoorsman, but we’ve gotten lost on the Lone Star Hiking Trail, marked by small reflective markers nailed into the trunks of trees. It’s easy to lose track of the markers after leaving U.S. Forest Service land and walking down a rural road to the next section. Cell-phone service can be spotty, so it’s best to download Lone Star Hiking Trail Club maps in advance.
But not all of this wilderness is protected. Legally distinct from national parks and refuges, national forests can be used for hunting, fishing, timber, grazing, mining, oil, and natural gas. By law, the U.S. Forest Service must manage Sam Houston with no single resource emphasized over others. To that point, the 163,000 acres also include trails for ATVs, mountain bikes, and horses. Lakes are stocked with bluegill, largemouth bass, and catfish. Oil wells and easements for pipelines and power lines are common.
Historically, wildfires kept the forest from getting too dense and unhealthy. Today, the U.S. Forest Service uses controlled burns and sustainable timber harvesting in efforts to control a pest known as the southern pine beetle and improve habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker, an endangered species that favors open “pine savannas” and nests from April to June. Over the decades, environmentalists and forest managers have sparred in court over forestry practices related to the beetle and woodpecker.
I looked for those woodpeckers, but only heard their distinctive high-pitched chirps and tap tap-tapping hidden in the canopy.
Sprawl and suburbanization are the biggest threat to the forest and to this trail. I-45, the busy thoroughfare connecting Houston and Dallas, divides it in two, creating a formidable barrier for wildlife and people. The Texas Department of Transportation spent millions improving a 15-mile stretch of highway between Huntsville and New Waverly but spent little on allowing hikers or wildlife to cross safely under the roadway where cars speed past a white 67-foot statue of Texas founding father Sam Houston.
I wish the Texas legislature would use some of its $32.7 billion budget surplus to create a buffer for this trail—and improve the crossings that either don’t exist or have been damaged and make a through-hike so challenging. Unfortunately, this year has seen news in the opposite direction: The state recently lost a lovely park further north on the I-45 corridor that offered its own woodland paths.
In theory, animals can use the narrow corridor where Big Chinquapin Creek goes under the highway, but hikers must trudge four miles along three rural roadways and the I-45 frontage road in order to reach the next trail section.
Country-club communities such as Elkins Lake and the Texas Grand Ranch subdivision with its two- to five-acre lots allow people to live at the edge of the forest. As an unintended result, nonnative ornamental plants are escaping into the wild and becoming invasive species. The average person may not notice, but I kept spotting exotic plants like nandina, wax-leaf ligustrum, Chinese tallow, chinaberry, bamboo, and hardy orange all along the trail.
Volunteers with the Lone Star Hiking Club and the Houston area Sierra Club maintain the trail and try to clear out invaders. I’d love to give back and join them one day.
But it’s a big job—and progress is often slow.
A vehicle bridge to the Stubblefield Campground washed out during Hurricane Harvey in August 2017 but was not rebuilt until 2022. A footbridge over scenic and shaded bluffs of the east fork of the San Jacinto River in the Magnolia section of the trail was destroyed more than eight years ago and never replaced.
Hikers are forced to take a complex detour, though I opted to park my car at the next trailhead and walk to the opposite bank.
Even as the pandemic fades, I’m still going back for more, particularly to hike the loops outside the main trail. To me, this escape seems even more valuable with Houston growing at a pace that will see it overtake Chicago as the third-largest U.S. city. Even as the metropolitan area expands in all directions, the forest still offers respite.
