Clydebank’s asbestos legacy
We are delighted to present this guest blog-post from Michael Canning, MSC History student placement here at Archives and Special Collections
It may have been several decades since the end of the asbestos industry, but we still live in the shadow of this dangerous dust. Tough, flexible, cheap – these all made it a very attractive material for the modern world. But at what cost? Its long fibrous crystals could easily get into an unfortunate victim’s lungs before shredding them. Asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma were merely some of the patient diseases that would emerge years afterwards. Far from it being only the workers who suffered – asbestos dust carried home in their clothes or swept along in the wind would affect countless other innocents.
Clydebank was once known as the asbestos capital of Europe due to the sheer quantity that was produced, supplying much of western Scotland with its construction materials. Unfortunately, this title was also given because of the sheer number of victims of the killer dust. Mesothelioma struck Clydebank the hardest between 1976-1991, and by 1996 Clydebank still suffered from a mortality rate up to 11 times higher than the national average. For all the jobs that the asbestos industry provided, it claimed many more lives.
One of the most remarkable cases in Clydebank concerns an asbestos factory in Dalmuir. Established by Turner & Newall in 1938, the factory employed almost 500 workers at its peak and supplied the construction industry with asbestos products until its closure in 1972. Having operated for decades on end, it was responsible for an incredible amount of waste. The solution at the time was simple. An empty landfill would be the perfect dumping ground for the dangerous dust.
A biological bomb - that was how Ted Rushworth of the Cancer Prevention Society described the dump at Dalmuir. The dump was estimated to be 280,000 cubic yards of waste, an incredible amount that had been collected over the decades. By the time the reality of the dumping ground had been unearthed in 1980, the ownership of the land had swapped hands from Turner & Newall to Monaville Estates. That did not stop the new owner from being seen as a guilty party. Rushworth accused them of ‘social irresponsibility’ for their failure to even cover up the exposed asbestos, let alone removing it entirely.
While the Cancer Prevention Society called for a public inquiry into the dumping ground, the Clydebank District Council went on to sue Monaville Estates in a court case which dragged on for several years. The trouble came in proving that Turner & Newall had deliberately dumped the waste in negligence, which was no easy feat to prove at a time when the industry covered its tracks from prying eyes. Ultimately, the council resolved to bury the asbestos under the ground at the cost of £385,000.
That was not to be the end of the story. There were plans in the making for the construction of a new hospital on the site, which would ironically endanger people by risking the release of the asbestos once again. To ensure that a new catastrophe did not emerge, the asbestos would have to be permanently removed at the cost of an additional £7,000,000.
This is merely one expensive example of how asbestos continued to plague society years after the factories had closed. The asbestos industry had not only cost the community in lives but forced them to pay for the privilege as well.
