The Lunar New Year event has been announced in Pokemon GO, running from Feb5 at 10am to Feb11 at 8pm. Drampa debuts, and can be shiny.
Also, the blog post mentioned about the Wild Encounters and other rewards for the Global Challenge just shows a bunch of question marks at this time, so I suppose they will update things later for it.

I wanted to see you (inspiration)
Prompt by @wolfstarmicrofic for Feb5 (inspiration)
I went for the definition that immediately popped in my head for "inspiration" which is basically to inhale or take in breath because I'm weird and the nursing knowledge never left my brain even after I left the field. So. Here we are. Bone apple tea. Cw: chronic illness
**
"... heavy crackling with inspiration, and temp is 40.2" the nurse was saying, the doctor nodding along in agreement as he listened to Remus's ragged breaths.
Remus couldn't look away from the man. Dr. Black, his badge said. He looked so familiar. The little he could see of him with all the ER garb on, anyway. His voice sounded familiar too, but he couldn't place it for the life of him. Then again he probably couldn't spell his own name right now his fever had been up for so long. He wanted to speak, but the oxygen mask was making everything muffled.
"Get respiratory down here. Not Paul. Anyone but Paul." He said suddenly. The nurse was jotting notes quicker than Remus had ever seen. "And get me Goldstein. I..." -he lowered his voice a little, but Remus could still hear- "have to turn over care of this patient for... oh, nevermind why, actually. Just tell him to stop in as soon as he's free."
The nurse nodded and left in a hurry. The doctor eyed the door, seemingly considering closing it, but decided on simply pulling the curtain around them instead. Remus could hear the noise from the hall still. The beeping and humming of machines. The chatter from the nurses station. A squeaking wheel on the cart that just passed. The worried cries from a woman some several rooms away.
"Remus" the doctor- Dr. Black- said in a worried, breathy tone, reaching for his hand in a way that seemed a little more intimate than doctor-y. "Is there... anyone I can call? You'll be here for a while, I'm afraid."
He shook his head. Dorcas already knew where he was, she had been running the coffee shop while he was gone. There was no one else.
Dr. Black must have registered the confusion on his face at the physical contact because he nervously moved his hands away and shoved them into the pockets of his white coat as he took a few steps back.
Remus fumbled for the oxygen mask and pulled it from his face a few inches, just enough to speak. "Do I know you?"
What he could see of the doctor's own face went pink as he reached for his ER mask and pulled it down a bit, showing a timid, familiar smile.
Remus gasped. "Sirius?"
"Yea" he laughed awkwardly, readjusting his mask and stepping back toward the bed. "Not exactly what I meant when I said I hoped to see you again..."
"Me either" Remus said, coughing weakly, trying to breathe a little deeper. Trying to stay calm.
"I was wondering why I hadn't seen you for a few days at the coffee shop" Sirius confessed as he sat down on the very edge of the chair next to the bed. "I thought you were avoiding me after..." He trailed off, turning pink again.
"No, no, I wanted to see you" Remus said as quickly as lungs would let him, "but I got sick... a- a flare up... I haven't been at work."
Sirius nodded. He must know now. Must have seen it in his chart. Cystic Fibrosis.
"I wanted to see you, Sirius." Remus said again, breaking the silence that had fallen over them as he searched Sirius's face for clarity. For some sign or confirmation that this wasn't going to change anything.
He was still reeling a little. Sirius was a doctor. How did he not know? How did that never come up once all those mornings he lingered getting his coffee? Or that first night? He could have sworn Sirius had said his last name was Potter. He looked so different with his hair back and ER mask on, but his voice was the same. His gentle steady presence felt the same too. Calming. Confident. Steady.
Sirius took his hand again and squeezed, blinking back tears, relief. "Well let's get you better, then we can plan that second date.

A Yandere Simulator “PMV” + Yandere Simulator Character Trivia Video Review
Doing another one of these! I'm very excited to start writing them again. I anticipate doing this twice a week and categorizing everything into two groups: two shorter articles reviewed simultaneously, and one longer piece.
The bigger ones have more information, so I can focus on every last detail much more easily. I can also look at a lot more in a shorter amount of time. So that will be the method I use moving forward! What could be more enjoyable than reading so many posts at once?
Before I get into the two main articles (Feb5 and Feb6), I wanted to mention the February 3rd Bug-Fixing Build post! I've always liked reading about developers fixing bugs and making enhancements. And it makes me so happy looking through the list of all the things that have been promised so far and seeing them all in the final product. Cheers to Dev!
Of course, it's time for the actual review.
I begin.
Dev's PMV editing is far superior to the choppy work I did when I was 12 years old to create something similar. Not only is the artwork in this video very beautiful (kudos to all the artists, this is some splendid work!) but Dev's skillful blending of it all together is a work of beauty!
Although PMV editing has been around for a very long time online, I'm constantly amazed at how far we've come in terms of what we can do with these programs to create remarkable things. Well done, Dev!
And it's wonderful that he's acknowledging his Chinese fans. I knew they were a possibility, even if I haven't personally run into them. I'm so glad to see him making an effort to connect with his admirers who live in a country where viewing his work is practically impossible. Really demonstrates the greatest kindness Dev exhibits when speaking to them.
The next post is about character trivia, and it's one of my favorites. There are so many characters in the game that I wish I knew more about, even if it's just a breadcrumb of new information, and Dev just gave us the whole loaf. I'd love to see more of these for the other students because the video truly makes them seem so much more rounded and alive!
Dev clearly enjoys creating these characters, even the minor ones, as evidenced by the amount of effort and attention that goes into each one. (A shame Kokona's father is still in debt! Poor guy. Poor Kokona, too.)
I personally would enjoy seeing more content like this. Perhaps some trivia on the other rivals! The music is great, the ideas are quite original, and the visuals are really charming. I can't really think of anything to add on! I think it's straight to the point while also looking very pleasing to the eye.
Please make more of these if you can! I would love them very much.
It was so nice reading these and watching the videos themselves. It's clear a lot of love and care was put into it and I just love seeing it being put on display here. Two great videos, and it's all for us fans. I'm so grateful for them.
Good job on all your hard work, Dev!

Pure Data sound puzzle prototyping
UCSC DANM grad school winter 2023 - week 4 (jan30 - feb5)
A class has a ‘skill share’ component, where we teach a skill to one or more students. I’m teaching Pure Data and Raspberry Pis. One student in my cohort is working on escape rooms, and I started thinking about what kind of sound puzzles an escape room could have. Pure Data can activate python scripts, which can then turn on pins on Raspberry Pi boards, which means it can activate LEDs and magnetic locks. I came up with 4 ideas.
Play the right thing on the piano
A midi piano is hooked up to pd. Mtof from midi keyboard to osc. Put an object between keyboard and mtof that sorts the right notes. If wrong note play sound file. Create tab array that reads incoming notes. If in right order keep reading them, if not discard and start again. If note order is hit, play a victory sound. BONUS - and unlock maglock 1 - edit - set it to any incoming audio using pitch detection
Bird puzzle
There are 4 audio sources and 4 microphones. Each audio source (set up around a room, ideally) is playing ambient jungle noises, slightly different (idea - start at random point in audio file, OR have a huge number of ambient sounds that are triggered randomly). There is also audio of one bird that is out of place - a loon. The loon only plays out of one speaker at a time. Microphones are set up near the speakers. There is one button set up near each speaker as well. Check audio in for each of those speakers. If volume level hits a certain point AND the loon is playing out of that speaker, trigger a wing flapping noise and a few moments later start the sound at another speaker. If the loon is playing out of the speaker and the player is able to hit the button, they ‘capture’ the bird and a victory sound is played (and a maglock unlocks?)
Chu chu chu
A rhythm game type puzzle - simple beat to metronome with clapping at certain times - player has to hit it near those times in second measure
Telephone bros
There are 4 sets of headphones with single ear pieces. At each of these stations is a series of buttons. You can hear a bunch of voices coming out of each ear piece. Press and hold one button and you’ll hear one get louder and the rest get quieter. Each earpiece has a separate part of a short sentence from each voice, IE the sentence: “You need to pick up the red pot and put it in the bottom shelf of the refrigerator” - speaker 1 will be playing “You need ___ red_____it in____shelf___”. The gaps are filled in with the other speakers. The intention is that a group of players has to speak it aloud as they hear it, or that one player has a notebook and pieces it together themselves.
These make sense to me, at least. I started working on the first 2.
PIANO PUZZLE
For the piano puzzle, I chose Zelda’s Lullaby from Ocarina of Time because I played that game a bunch when I was younger. I connected a midi keyboard to Pure Data and grabbed the incoming midi values, converting them to sound using a simple oscillator and basic note start and end using delay values into the volume multiplier. I chose to make this an ‘easy mode’ puzzle, where the only notes that play audio are the 4 notes necessary to play the song. The rest of the notes play an ‘error’ sound. This was achieved using the select object. (MIDI sends the note value twice - once when pressing the note down, once when releasing. The spigot button prevented it from sending the note during the release, meaning that it only played the error sound once.)
Tumblr media
To get the patch to recognize when I played the melody properly, I initially tried to get it to record incoming values to an array. I wasn’t sure how to properly reset the array, or how to compare it against an array with the proper values, so I abandoned the idea. I still believe that this would be the best and most accurate way to work the puzzle, but I just don’t have enough knowledge and experience with Pure Data to get it to work.
The messier way to get it to work was through a series of gates. If you played one note correctly, it ‘opened the door’ to the next gate. If you played that note correctly, the next gate opened, etc. I achieved this using a series of select and spigot objects.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, I couldn’t check the ‘wrong’ number at every gate (select object), because it was still checking every number that passed through. My workaround was to only have it turn off every gate if the FINAL note press was incorrect. This worked, mostly. It still occasionally sends a reset value when I don’t intend it to, and I’m not sure why. The patch mostly works though.

BIRD PUZZLE
The bird puzzle is still in progress. This version is not working.
I grabbed a (cc0) field recording of a rainforest from freesounds.org.  I edited the file 3 times, changing the start and end time and making them loop. I like working with readsf~ because it’s so straightforward compared to a tabread~, so if there’s work I can do in an audio editor first instead of Pure Data I’ll do that. I set all of them playing simultaneously from different speakers.
Tumblr media
I chose a loon for the bird, as loons are from North America and wouldn’t normally be heard in a jungle (even though they’re associated with a jungle in public consciousness). I figured the easiest way to make it heard in one speaker rather than another was to have it playing out of all the speakers and just control the volume.
Tumblr media
You can see that at load it should only come out of the first speaker.
I monitored the input volume of a microphone using the env~ object. I placed a spigot after that to be able to control when the microphone was actually affecting anything. If the volume goes over a certain amount, it triggers a flapping noise in that speaker, and also changes the active bird speaker to one of the other 3.
Tumblr media
For some reason, the mic will still create a bang when the env~ value is over the desired input, even if the spigot is ‘turned off’. I’m not sure why. There are a few other quirks with how it’s working, and there aren’t ‘capture’ buttons set up yet.
If I’m going to teach this, I’ll have to work out the errors and get it functioning.

My dearest love,
I’ve been asleep for the past 32 out of 48 hours. Every time I wake up and think of you and causes a lot of pain. I miss you so much. I literally feel like something is missing out of my body without you. Every day I’m working on getting better and every time I try to picture my future you’re in it. So I’m getting better for me but I’m getting better for us. I love you so much I was doing pretty bad and I called you I told you I’ve been having bad dreams about you so that I wanted to check on you to make sure that you’re OK. Hearing your voice it really made me happy I feel better. You don’t understand the power you have over me and how much my body literally just aches for you. I love you, Melissa. #ML #feb5
