After we found out this isn't ava season, I want to discuss how badly druck and skam in general have treated fat characters over the years.
The ONLY fat character we had in the og skam was Chris, and she was mainly used as comical relief, instead of getting a storyline for herself. While the romances between the other girls were seen as serious, Chris hook ups with guys and attempts to flirt, were always represented as something "funny", having Isak and even her own friends laugh at her in such scenes. The two versions of Chris in the remakes who got more of their own story shown, was Cris from skam españa, who was playbed by what? A skinny actress, and Alexia from skam france, who was sidelined as Arthur's love interest for a skinny actress aswell.
Now we get druck having one fat character in the show: Ava, then introducing another fat girl, Lou, only for her to be used as a fake love interest for a character who was confirmed as fatphobic to Ava, got a season before her, and had their acrions excused by a four minute clip. And who ended up being the real love interest in the season? A skinny guy.
Hanna, the main character on druck season one, was also just given space to talk in one scene about how bullied she was for being "the fat girl" when she was younger, and apparently "saved by Leonie" because she decided to be her friend.
Now, season 8, that was antecipated by many to be a season about Ava, was given instead to Mailin, another white skinny girl who had way less development than Ava as a character, and way less story to tell.
So fat characters, or mainly fat girls, in skamverse are either not present, and if they are, their characters are constantly sidelined, (usually by skinny actresses and actors), used as comic relief, and never shown to be truly desired or desirable. They can never be love interests, and they can never be mains, instead they can only play characters who are in the background, no matter how much potential they have. Their stories always have to centered around being bullied by their weight, or being made fun of, but yet fatphobia and it's repercussions is never explored as a real theme in the show.
It's just really hurtful to see skam after skam remake cast talented plus sized actresses only for that to be their roles. And is especially hurtful seeing this coming from druck when Ava's actress actually speaks out by fatphobia and body positivity, and that's obviously an important issue for her.
