Drawing lesson #2 - full body
So for fun I decided to do another drawing tips & tricks thingy! I'm not an expert by any means, but I have been doodling forrrrr... at least 30 years now so.... *shrugs*
Ho-kay! So I'm drawing mr sexy pants Rex in Zygarrian armor because who doesn't love an angry cutie pie in a cat suit!
So BIG important - set some guide lines on your paper! Ugh! Don't draw and draw and draw and then suddenly you can't fit a foot on your paper ! 😭
Make dumb fat messy shapes to set up where your body parts are, and go over them multiple times. I find all those lines help to create the nice organic shapes I want!
Tumblr media
So I have a messy outline going. I filled in that stick man type thing here and my important joints. Also I added some plains to help keep my body aligned
This is kind of a 3/4 angle. Not facing perfectly at me, so I don't have to be as fussy with the symmetry.
Now, let's talk about shapes. I often break body parts in to shapes while I am drawing. This helps keep the body parts the right size in relation to eachother; its easier to draw two triangles than to mock out two entire feet, right? These are my training wheels!
Tumblr media
So take a look here! See how I turn the basic areas in to easy shapes? This way I can make sure my body is nice and proportional before I put lots of effort in to details.
This is also hugely helpful with hands and feet! So see how the foot on our left side is viewed from dead on? From the angle to the bottom it is kind of one big cone/triangle from this angle, or even maybe like the look of a horse's hoof!
Look to the one on the right - I used a triangle for the heel, a squatty rectangle for the toe and a sloping rectangle for the mid foot. I almost prefer to err on the side of bigger and chunkier with feet. What can I say... I like boots!
Also, look at the leg on our left. See how I outlined the leg? The natural curves of the thighs and calves should be "B" shaped at this angle.
Tumblr media
Ok, so I want to make sure my arms are proportional! If you straighten out and put your arms at your sides you'll find your palms reach your thighs well below your hips! Like, Rex needs to be able to cover his nethers if need be!
So to draw my arms, first I pick where my hand is going to be, and my shoulder first. THEN I draw the forearm, elbow and upper arm to connect my hand to the body. To check my proportions, I grab my ruler and measure the rough length of my arm pieces, and then make sure a straight arm would reach his thigh. It looks pretty good to me!
Tumblr media
What? More shapes? YES! So I like a thic chest on my man, but this really works for even skinny bodies. The top of my pectoral rectangle also acts as my collar bone, which connects the shoulders. Then the tops of the trapezius/shoulder muscles make a triangle pointing to the head. The rounded portion of the shoulder is two petals.
Now, the torso/sternum part is a fatty triangle pointing down from the pectoral. This also forms your rib cage. The tip of the triangle pushes down in to a cylinder shaped waist/abdomen. On a male body type this is generally not as curvey.
And the pelvis/hips... shaped like shorts 😋
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dude.... hands are hard!!! For EVERYONE. Anyone who says otherwise is BS-ing you. The painful truth is practice, practice, practice. Copy pictures from magazines. Sit and look at your own hands. Make the shape you are trying to draw and examine yourself!
Thank goodness for my cheater shapes! If you look at your mitts, you'll see that the knuckles line up fairly well, so laying down a guideline can help to lay them out. The palm section is a pretty comfortable rectangle, and where palm becomes wrist -> triangle.
Also, check out the fist on our right. IDK why, but I like making a triangular gap between my fingers. I feel like it adds depth in a way and it makes them feel less like sausages that way.
Tumblr media
Alright! I've been working my way around my drawing. I like to jump around from part to part to keep everything moving along together. Work together the lines that you laid out with your shapes. I start out light, but when I've found the shape I like, I lay down a thick dark line that says "this is done. As much as I'm tempted to be lazy, I know I'll be unhappy if I don't keep working at all the little details. A simple curved line makes a wrinkle in the fabric. Add seams to your clothes and textures to cloth or metal.
For shading, sometimes a softer graphite pencil is nice, but it can get really smudgey! Some folks have these paper blenders - they make me gag. Its a texture thing. I prefer to blend with my fingers; the oils seem to help soften the pencil and seal it to the paper. Just a light scribbling motion with the pad if my finger usually works.
Tumblr media
There he is babies!! I could lecture more, but I can only put this many pics in to a post!! So here I have my finished Zygerrian Rex. He has no patience for d-bag slavers and is going to open up a world of hurt on sumbody. I rrreeeeaaally wanted an angry toothy snarl a la Frank Miller's Spartans... bit I couldn't make it happen and look good. *Shrug*
Well, dollies... lwt me know what you think! Feel free to ask questions any time!

Exhibition Piece
Tumblr media
Tuesday 5th March
I began working on my piece for the exhibition after our lecture was cancelled and I knew I had the whole day to sit and concentrate on my piece. I wanted this to be my best work going into the show so I wanted to be ambitious with my work and wow people, instead of throwing in a piece of artwork I had already created. I chose to make my largest ever piece. I had a week to complete the piece and planned to go home for the weekend so I had to spend my time wisely. It was a very anxious week.
I came up with a plan of the piece I wanted to make, which involved combining the images I had taken a few weeks back. These images I had already been working on to create several smaller paintings so I wanted to extend this series on a larger scale. I used the Procreate app on my iPad to juxtapose the images together and then filled in the gaps using the pen tool. I wanted the faces to be connected but to also show the restriction anxiety can have on the body.
I first cut the piece of paper and laid it out so I could see how big the piece really was. I then used a thick brush to coat the paper in a light wash of grey watercolour. This took me a while as the watercolour pan was so small and I had to keep remixing the paint to make it the same shade. The paper absorbed the water instantly and was quite difficult to work with due to the amount of bumps that formed. I waited a few hours for the paper to completely dry and then began marking out the grid lines to match my digital image. I did this to help make the painting as accurate as possible to the image as I wanted the proportions to be correct. I stayed in the studios until 8:00 that night because the paper was so huge and I only had a 30cm ruler. If I plan on using his technique is in the future, I will get a meter stick to draw the lines as it was very tedious.
Wednesday 6th March
I spent the day mapping out the basic outline in the squares in pencil, to make the piece accurate to the image. Once the basic outline is done I will be able to adjust the other areas to my liking and tweak any other areas. I just needed that basic guideline as I am working on a larger scale to usual.
I planned on using ink for this piece as I wanted it to have a high contrast with the pale wash of the grey background. I found the bumps in the paper began to lessen as I was working on the paper. My choice to use ink was also inspired by fact I had chosen to make my image black and white. I wanted the black to be strong and show depth in the piece.
Thursday 7th March
After completing the outline I began working with the black ink on the face. I decided against using watercolour as I wanted to use as minimal liquid on the paper to reduce the bumps, the ink settled well on the paper and did not spread as quickly as the watercolour. The only problem I faced with the black ink was that it sometimes appeared patchy and required a few coats and also there was no mid tone. I needed to make an artistic decision which would affect the way the piece was viewed. I chose to create some small samples in my sketchbook to see how different mediums would work together and how they would layer. I did not plan on making this piece a mixed media piece. But after a chat with my peers I was convinced to use more than one media and to not limit my possibilities and to also help me with the mid tone areas.
I first made a choice to use charcoal as this would easily blend into the paper and I could create darker and lighter areas. I also wanted to use charcoal within he rope as I found the texture worked really well based on the samples in my sketchbook. I continued working on the ink sections of the piece for the faces and then decided to work on the charcoal areas tomorrow.
Friday 8th March
I had a few hours to work in the studio before I had to catch my three hour train home for the weekend so I wanted to make the most of my time. I started with the charcoal. I first drew the basic outline of the rope in the charcoal and then smudged the charcoal to add some medium tones to the light areas. I then repeated the outline and added some lines and texture to the bends in the rope.
I thought about the paper and how these bumps would never leave. I had a thought about exaggerating these by completely screwing up the paper into a ball and then opening it back out. I also really liked the raw edges of the piece and decided to keep these torn. My piece is about anxiety and how this can be a restriction to the body. I thought this would be a good way to show myself overcoming anxiety.
Monday 9th March
We had all actually set this date as the deadline to have our work done at our meeting on Tuesday 5th so that we wouldn't need to worry, but unfortunately this was not the case for everybody! I had been checking up on everybody's work in the studio to monitor their progress and compare it to mine to see if I was the only one who was behind. Myself and Lucy both began our pieces on the same day and were both working consistently at the same times.
I arrived back to uni late afternoon from my weekend away and went straight to the studio to continue with my piece. I managed to complete all of the rope that was shown in my image, but found this wasn't enough and there were several gaps. This was there I needed to use my creativity and imagine what should go where. I decided to leave my image behind and not be so controlled and reliant on the image. I added in some more rope where I thought necessary around the border of the piece. I also tore the edges of he piece to create more of a raw feel and to make the piece look more square.
Tuesday 10th March
I came into the studio for registration and carried on working on my piece. It was helpful to work in the studio on the Tuesday as everybody was in and I could have the opinions of my fellow course mates, it was especially helpful to have Cara work by me as she could see the piece progress each day and give me advice on what she feels would work best.
The last few days I wanted to work all day and night to get the piece complete so I decided it would be in my best interest to work on the piece at home as I get my sudden bursts of creativity late in the evening when the studios are closed. I also needed to make sure that it was completed in time, so I wanted to work constantly to make sure it was to a high standard. I also did this because I was working late in the studios every night until 8/9 and I needed to make sure I could manage my time better and get the right amount of sleep I needed.
Wednesday 11th March
I worked at home all day on the piece. I decided to add some more faces into the painting as I felt the image on this scale did not work as well. I felt that it needed to have more of an impact and also have hidden faces. I also reflected on what Zander had said about not limiting myself to one media and decided to add a layer of black acrylic into the charcoal rope. I did this to make the rope stand out more and also add further detail. I also added some different shades of grey into faces to add depth, light and shadow. Adding the acrylic also allowed me to fix certain areas I was unhappy with, as I could over paint them.
I noticed something didn't seem completely finished and the work needed something else. I was really unsure about what to do so asked for some feedback from my housemates. I noticed there was a lot of empty space at the top and at the bottom left corner of the piece. So I added another closed eye at the top centre and also added further rope in the bottom left. I feel doing this brought all of the sections together
After making some last minute adjustments, I finally completed the piece at 11:30am just in time to be taken to paradise works tomorrow morning.
I was planning to completely screw this piece up and video myself doing it, but after creating it, I made the artistic choice not to do so. I did this because I was happy with the way it looked and I felt it didn't need to have that appearance as there was already a texture to the paper which I liked.
Thursday 12th March
I arrived into uni to take the work to paradise works. I rolled up my artwork in the morning and sealed it with black bags, so that the weather wouldn't cause damage to the work. I didn't choose to use a cardboard tube to transport my work as I didn't mind the fact it could be mashed or crushed by the Van as I wanted to keep my work textured and the rawness was apart of my work.

Top 10 Errors By Cannabis Growers And Their Probable Solutions
Growing cannabis is one of the most convenient and rewarding ways to enjoy the highly preferred quality buds with the substantial effect you need. Growing cannabis is similar to growing vegetables, with specific requirements needed for healthy growth.
However, having optimal growth of your cannabis plants is not as easy as it sounds. With a single error or mistake in the growing process, you can end up with a poor quality harvest, which you would not have expected.
It is common to make mistakes while growing cannabis, especially if you're a new grower. This is why we prepared a series of top 10 errors made by cannabis growers, along with their probable solutions for your better knowledge.
You can also look at the expert's opinions on this issue at leading cannabis supplier websites such as i49.net. So, get ready to dig into this article and get a proper insight into the mistakes. Here we go!
Tumblr media
Mistake #1. Using Cannabis Seeds With Poor Genetics
Irrespective of whether you're a well-experienced or new grower, you must not buy cannabis seeds with poor or bad genetics. It is nothing but a wastage of your money and hard work.
Poor genetics will yield a poor-quality harvest, no matter how skillful or determined you are. Seeds with poor genetics fail to grow at times, and even if they do, the results will not be satisfying.
The best probable solution is to research the seeds before buying them and purchase from a trusted or reputed supplier.
Tumblr media
Mistake #2. Using Average Soil From Garden
This is the most common error made by cannabis growers. You have to understand that the cannabis plants need a specific balance of nutrients in the soil, which the average soil fails to meet. The quality of soil plays a crucial role in ensuring the optimal health of cannabis plants. One of the most common errors is not obtaining soil with all the nutrients in the right proportion.
Don’t be an average grower! Verify if the soil suits your cannabis seeds and choose the soil consistency with nutrients. Doing so will help the cannabis grow optimally throughout the life cycle for that particular seed or strain. Even for germinating seeds, you must select the soil that will help them thrive in the best way.
Although you will be feeding your plants throughout their growth cycle, there is no harm to start with soil that already has essential macronutrients like nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus in the right composition.
For the growth of auto-flowering cannabis seeds, you must remember that they don't require much feeding, thus requiring a different type of soil. Meanwhile, photoperiod plants need a high source of nutrients in the soil throughout the growth cycle.
The probable solution to choose soil for auto-flowering cannabis plants is a light nutrient mix with three parts peat moss, three parts compost, two parts of perlite, and 1 part of vermiculite. Ensure to choose a soil with a rich yet light texture that crumbles easily in your hand.
Tumblr media
Mistake #3. Grow Lights Hanging Too Low/High
It is crucial to place the grow lamps or grow lights in the correct position and height. If not, then it can adversely affect the overall growth of your cannabis plant.
If the grow lights are too high, your plants will not get sufficient light to meet their appetite. It will lead the plants to use up their stored energy to meet the light requirement, resulting in thin and weak plants.
If your grow lights or lamps are too low, your plants will become hot easily. This additional heat will cause burn damage to the leaves, affecting the overall growth and quality of the plants.
The best solution is to place the grow light or lamp 1m-1.5m away from the plants.
Tumblr media
Mistake #4. Overfeeding Or Underfeeding The Cannabis
It is one of the most common mistakes by amateur growers to overfeed or underfeed their cannabis plants. You must know that cannabis is sensitive to excess or deficit nutrients in its growth cycle.
It can be harmful to your cannabis growth, so try to learn about the right proportion of feeding for your cannabis plants. You must also learn the signs to identify unhappy cannabis plants that show improper growth signs.
The best solution is to feed your cannabis plants with a large number of macronutrients, which are nitrogen (N), potassium (P), and phosphorus (K). A general rule of thumb is an NPK proportion of 3:1:1. The early stages of growth require 1:3:2 NPK ratio, while the late flowering stage needs 0:3:3 NPK ratio.
Tumblr media
Mistake #5. Improper Or No Flushing On Cannabis Plants
Many growers tend to do flushing in their cannabis plants as an urgent measure to resolve nutrient lockout or overfeeding. This is a crucial step to be taken by every grower as an immediate solution. However, it has become a tradition not to use flushing unless the situation mentioned above arises.
It is a common error which you must avoid. Flushing at the right time before harvesting the crops is beneficial. Flushing two weeks before the harvesting period improves the quality of the cannabis obtained by detoxing the excess or remaining chemicals on them.
Based on the desired color you need for harvest, you need to determine when the buds are ready for flushing. When a majority of the trichomes reach the needed shade, the time will be right for flushing.
Tumblr media
Mistake #6. Harvesting The Cannabis Plants Too Early Or Too Late
If you want to end up with a successful and satisfying harvest, you have to ensure the right timing to do it. Harvesting your cannabis too early or too late poses a threat to all your hard work. This is one of the most common mistakes made by growers, which can easily be resolved with some appropriate knowledge.
You can always keep a magnifying glass in hand. If your cannabis growth is on a macro level, check for the yellowing of fan leaves. This happens when the nutrients direct towards the buds in the flowering stage and completes upon the final flushing. This indicates that your plants are close to harvest.
If your cannabis is on the micro-level, you have to check its pistils and trichomes. Trichomes are small, mushroom-like glands responsible for producing cannabinoids and terpenes such as CBD and THC.
Take your magnifying glass, get close to the buds in the early stage of flowering, and look if they have tiny glands with a translucent appearance or not. You will notice it to turn cloudy with amber coloration.
If you want a stimulating high, harvest the buds when it's cloudy. If you want a high stoning effect, then wait for most of the trichomes to turn amber in color.
Also, check if the pistils have turned from white to orange during the maturity of the flowers or not. If you notice 70-90% of these pistil hairs to change their color, you can aim for harvest.
Tumblr media
Mistake #7. Not Following The Safety Rules
Many growers feel bored and tend to avoid the safety measures in their grow room. There are many cases where the entire cannabis plants or buildings have burnt down due to inadequate safety measures and considerations. This can be a dangerous and life-threatening mistake.
You must know that you're working with heat, electricity, and water in a small space or room. So, it is essential not to mix them up.
The best solution is to ensure safety layout, keeping the area clean and hygienic, managing the electric cables, and taking extra precautions while watering the plants.
Tumblr media
Mistake #8. Use of Incorrect pH Level
If you want your cannabis plants to thrive efficiently, you have to ensure the correct pH level for them. If you don't maintain the proper pH level, you will face several issues with your cannabis growth. This type of error can lead to nutritional deficiency in your plants. So, if there is any sign of an issue in your plants, check for the pH level before making changes to its feeding pattern.
So, it is crucial to have a proper understanding of assessing, managing, and amending your pH level for the cannabis plants for their optimal healthy growth. A pH level of 5.8-6.2 is the best solution for your cannabis plants.
Tumblr media
Mistake #9. Not Doing Proper Research
You can easily avoid all of these above-mentioned problems if you would've done proper research. Growing cannabis is an easy, simple, and exciting task once you understand every detail, method, step, and trick involved in it.
Most growers tend to overlook finding out those details and rush towards their preparation with the desire to achieve the best results.
The only solution to these problems is knowledge. As the quote says, 'Knowledge is power.' So, take advantage of the internet, dig into various articles and gather as much detail as possible.
Tumblr media
Mistake #10. Bragging Too Much About It
Grow Privately! Grow Secretly! It is a natural human behavior to brag about something that you achieved after so much hard work.
However, bragging about your cannabis cultivation can be a significant error or mistake if growing it is illegal in your state or country.
The primary reason behind the cannabis growers getting caught is not the police chasing them down or looking for them, but their own slip of the tongue or show-off attitude.
So, don't make a fool out of yourself and enjoy growing quietly. You can use good-quality ventilators to get rid of the cannabis smell and enjoy tasty buds without any hassle.
Conclusion
So, hopefully, from this comprehensive guide, you have learned about all the errors that growers usually make willingly or unwillingly. Ensure to learn from their mistakes and not repeat them while growing cannabis.

“Horror Vacui” or the fear of the blank page [for amateur artists]
[A really long post]
If you fit this description, this post is for you:
I’m a hobby artist/writer/creator with a broad interest and I don’t have enough to time to practice any of my interests beyond the amateur level. Creating is something I commit to about 10 to 15 times a year - when I need help, I don’t want to take an online course, just give it to me quick and dirty and I’ll see to the turnover.
This post contains:
mandatory motivation delineation
step-by-step drawing guide for amateur artists by an amateur artist
all reference pictures for the above
tracing - a technique shunned by my Grade 8 art teacher and the last time I attended art class
cross-hatching and contours
a tiny bit of perspective
a bit of shading
tools
tips for shaky hands
Why this post, when the internet has countless of tips to overcoming writers’/artists’/creators’ block already?
I mean, Google churns out some 20 million search results in under 0.55 seconds! That’s like 10 search results you are might look at tops - 20 if you’re desperate enough to go to page 2 - and realize most of the tips a lot of work, not worth the trouble, things you’ve tried before, or too abstract to be applicable to the thing.
One thing most of these guides get right: getting started is the most crippling step of the creative process.
The most common advice to overcoming your block - so I have read countless times - is establishing a routine until you “instinctively” know how to achieve your goal. Are they wrong? No, definitely not. Is it good advice though? Depends; at least not for me - and if you’ve read this far, then not for you either.
What are my other options?
Planning. And being aware of all the tools at your disposal. I documented the process of this drawing as an example. This process has limited applicability to paintings.
You will need:
an idea
drawing utensils
paper (some scraps to start with)
patience
Step 1: Rough Sketching
Take scrap paper. Unless your documenting this (hi, mom) you’ll throw this away asap. Get down the rough shape. This may a while and will involve you questioning your sanity - barge through the doubt, don’t erase what you’ve made, use the best parts and try again.
Example:
I would like to draw a cat. I take a pencil and...
Tumblr media
Lol, no. Cats are not pizza with ears.
Let’s try that again. Maybe a reference picture will help.
Tumblr media
Much better. Start with some crude shapes but sketch out the entire body with shapes like they do in some drawing guides - only draw what you need. In this case about two and a half ovals are enough. Now make a better copy beside that initial sketch - I hate doing them on top of the first because that gets messy real quick. Draw some helping lines from the reference image. Don’t bother too much with proportions or posture, or going big; all these sketches are about 6 by 4 cm.
I want to draw a companion for this steampunk cat, about the same shape and posture with a head tilted one way and the torso another. She’ll need a proper headdress too - I went through three options visually and added some notes for other ideas I had in case neither of these worked out.
Step 2: Break it down
Break down the drawing into smaller bits and pieces and look up reference images if you need them.
I broke down my sketch into:
Head/Face
Torso/Clothes
Hat
Fan
The head
I want my cat to look slightly to the left and this is what I found online:
Not quite
Almost
Perfect
The torso
I found this image, which contained most of the parts I needed. I didn’t like the hat, head, fan, and all the mice scampering about ‘er so I just took the torso - the corset is really neat. Unfortunately, her posture is not quite what I need so that will be the biggest challenge for this body part.
The hat
I considered a few options such as this 1920s flapper’s headpiece and a couple of Victorian hats before settling on this one.
The fan
I own two so no reference image necessary.
You can keep a couple of tabs (or books, if you have some at hand) open in case you change your mind while drafting.
Step 3: Fine Sketching
This is the hardest part but if you’ve made it this far, you might as well go all the way, right? Understand how your brain operates and beat it at its own mind-game: create a sunk-cost-fallacy and drive yourself forward.
There three ways to get your fine sketch onto paper:
Cool, if you can pull it off go for it, usually takes the longest if you lack the practice (like I do)
Generally a good approach, especially when scaling up
Use a ruler to measure and plot key points of your outline
Print it and hold it against a window.
If it’s dark outside unhinge that glass cabinet door, duct tape it between two tables and put a lamp beneath.
Pull it up on your screen and adjust your zoom. Be careful with the pressure of your pen!
Use sticky tape to prevent it from slipping
(Below) Using a reference grid (the dots) on a canvas for another project.
Tumblr media
(Below) Tracing the head. Slight rotation of the page to achieve the desired orientation of the head.
Tumblr media
I also traced the torso and the head first. Then I added some rough shapes for the arms and the fan - this was also when I realized I can use the fan to hide parts of the face I don’t want to draw. Everything ended up a little twisted and short so I dashed lines where I want these limbs to go. The fabric of the corset also needs to be pulled up on the right and pushed down on the left, hence the arrow there. The neck is way too long too. Add some more notes of things you want to change - like adding a fuck-ton of flowers to the hat.
To judge whether the proportions make sense take a look at yourself in the mirror or ask random people in the hallway to pose for you - afterwards exchange a friendly, confused smile and move on.
(Below) First fine draft after about 5 hours of intermittent work - just take breaks when you’re bored, but leave it prominently lying in your way so you don’t forget about it. I reconstructed the arms’ outlines and added some bold comments.
Tumblr media
Once you have everything you need, clean up your first draft as much as possible by erasing help lines and drawing strong borders. Next, open something bright on your screen (or whatever your tracing equipment happens to be), tape a blank paper to your first sketch and take down all the details you want to keep. You can move the paper around to shorten or elongate distances.
Add borders if you want to frame the drawing later.
Now change all the things you don’t like. I changed the cat lady’s hat to be less round because I didn’t want her to wear a wide-brimmed bowler and added a fuck-ton of flowers and - for good measure - a feather. If you can’t draw the feather flicking back up like me, hide it behind the brim of the hat.
Think about any fur you want interacting with the fabric (hat or collar). I added one curl to flow down the left side of her collar - didn’t really work out but A for effort.
Add any major decorative elements like the fish on her corset or the patterns on her fan.
Add major textures like the lines on the brim of her straw hat. The dotted texture on her sleeve was way too fine and didn’t carry over to the next tracing. The same goes for the shading from the last draft, which didn’t carry over well and I ended up bundling all the fur together in larger bundles.
Save the puffy shoulders for last (because I had no idea what to do there and eventually opted for “brains”).
(Below) About 90 minutes on the face to compartmentalize all strands of fur into proper bundles. Note six key bushels that define her expression: on both side of her nose, her “eyebrows” and the trailing of her eyes. Look up cartoon cats for help. 2 hours on her torso and another hour on her shoulders.
Tumblr media
Clean it up again and judge your work. If you are still unhappy with the positioning, do another tracing. Don’t forget to embolden all important features
Step 4: Inking the outline!
You’re patience is paying off! Next up is inking! Inking is fun!
Oh shit-
Don’t ink your final draft!
Step 4a: Screw up
I never get my inking right on the first try and it’s hard to hide mistakes you made with ink. I ran my draft through the photocopier once (because I didn’t want to trace it) so my mistake here wasn’t that big a deal - I lost five minutes and this paper went into the my scrap tray. Always start inking the most difficult part so you don’t regret screwing up after being almost done.
At this point I realized I couldn’t erase the pencil lines anymore and went back to tracing paper on paper on screen. Be aware of the ink you use and how thick your paper is or you might end up leaving marks on the draft below.
(Below) The pattern on her brow is off in two places.
Tumblr media
Step 4b: Finish inking the outline
As before focus on borders and major textures; about now you’ll notice which parts of your draft are to fine to trace well and which ones need some extra weight. Drop any lines you don’t like.
By now you probably have a couple of pages with sketches and bad inkings lying around - make sure you label them or find some other method to remove them from your line of work (like throwing them in the bin).
(Below) About 45 minutes, 5 of which were spent on the feather, 5 on the flowers, 10 on the fan, 10 on the face, and 15 on the torso including arms.
Tumblr media
At this point you could scan and stick it into a colouring book.
Step 5: Textures!
This is the best part. Texturing a drawing is so satisfying it makes up for all the hardship up to this point.
Make a couple of copies this time to practice your texturing. Afterwards, feel free to continue the page you traced or run it through the photocopier once again.
(Below) Two versions with different types of shading.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s very easy to get carried away when shading; always go for a little less than you think you need. You can always add more later, but you can’t take it away.
Fur
Use lines that flow parallel to the outlines you’ve already drawn. Make the strands flow apart at the beginning and back together at the end. Try to keep the numbers of strands that begin and end constant. This will result in a larger spacing and thus a lighter centre of your bushel.
I like shading an entire area, in this case the entire head uniformly but very lightly, then I start thinking about accents and where light could come from. Wherever fur bundles together (usually at the end of a bushel) I add some more of the same texture to make it darker. You can lift some of the shading from your reference pictures and just copy it. But don’t limit yourself to what your references provide.
To be honest, I only roughly take notice of where I place my imaginary source of light and just emphasize parts of a bushel that were darker to begin with. Usually turns out okay.
Tumblr media
Fabric
Generally, keep your texturing parallel, perpendicular or at a fixed angle to the next leading edge. The lines don’t have to be - and most of the time shouldn’t be - straight. Allow them to trace out wrinkles in your fabric or reinforce the fabric’s rigidity by copying the leading edge at short intervals.
Tumblr media
The same formula of repeat the leading edge applies to other parts of the clothing - just vary the line separation and how strictly you follow the leading edges.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In other places lines placed at constant angles make a good texture.
Know your tools: my pens stop drawing at an angle of about 30-45° and drawing lines at this angle will make them lighter and discontinuous. This is a good approach to lightly shading a large area like most of the corset.
Tumblr media
Cross-hatching gives the sleeve a wrinkle and two light-spots. Two layers at roughly 70-90° gives a good hatch, only add a third layer if you need it really dark - careful: this will make any contours established with two layers disappear.
Tumblr media
Shadows
Some places just ought to be darker though, like the spot I marked behind the ear or below the chin. This gives your drawing some depth. Just reiterate the same local texture over and over again until it’s dark enough.
Tumblr media
Without my annoying comments, the final result will look like this:
Tumblr media
Is it perfect? Fuck no. Is it pretty good? Aye, meets my standards.
By the way, this is what we started with:

Tips for shaky hands
Sugar, caffeine, medical condition? Hands come in all degrees of shaky but don’t let that discourage you. Here’s how I approach the most important elements in my art.
Long lines
Long lines are hard to draw, if you don’t have practice sliding your hand across the page. I can do it sometimes but not reliably. Instead I place my wrist firmly on the page and draw the part of the line that is within my mobile range. The more of my wrist rests on the page, the less I shake. Then I lift my pen and move on to the next bit - sounds trivial?
Wrong.
Whenever you start or end a line you go from rest to drawing speed or vice versa. During these moments the constant flow of ink is spread over a shorter distance, resulting in a thicker line. Appending a new segment causes a brief overlap and results in a blotch, especially when you need longer than an instant to correctly put down your pen.
Coming in at an angle prevents the ink from flowing prematurely and gives you more control of your line.
Curved lines
Place your wrist on the inside of the curve (segment) - drawing towards yourself is easier than away. Rotate the page to make it happen or rotate yourself if the page is stationary (like a large canvas). Additionally, I like to keep my fingers stiff and only rotate around my wrist.
Textures
For very fine textures I keep the tip of my pen above the page and start repeating the pattern. About two thirds of the strokes will go into thin air but the shaking will make one third hit the page - a statistical approach to texturing.
Conclusion
My longest post so far - I starting making this almost 8 hours ago. A blank page is a scary thing, so many possibilities, so many ways to screw up. The most important advice to take from this post is plan, save, trace, repeat. You don’t have to be ashamed for tracing art; just don’t parade an exact copy as your own work and always keep your references at hand.
Why does this feel like academic writing 101...
I invite anyone to contribute their own quick and dirty drawing tips for amateurs to this post. DM me, if you have any questions or would like to use this a last-minute-Christmas gift - I’ll send you a free high-res. I don’t judge, not this year nor any other.
Best, Ocelittle

When the virus came to our hospital
As the Covid-19 pandemic loomed, the personnel at one hospital in the English Midlands braced themselves. Rapid they stumbled on themselves on the centre of a coronavirus hotspot – and nothing modified into out as they anticipated.
Liz Rees sat down at her dining room desk to grab the name. It became a Sunday in early March and, from down the road, a reveal became telling her about some take a look at outcomes that had right come support from the lab.
This wasn’t a abnormal prognosis.

Dudley, town the place Liz has worked for 20 years as a professional microbiologist, had its first case of Covid-19. That, in itself, wasn’t a surprise. She’d watched on TV because the virus had spread from Asia to continental Europe earlier than reaching the south of England; it had already been detected in close by Birmingham and Wolverhampton. “The became an inevitability about it,” she says. “But the predominant one makes it valid.”
Liz’s became the doctor chargeable for an infection prevention and retain watch over at Russells Hall Sanatorium in Dudley. She’d spent her occupation ready for what to enact in the match of an epidemic. And he or she knew town – a one-time industrial powerhouse, the capital of the Shaded Country – intimately. Her husband joked she became linked to an elastic band that wouldn’t stretch extra than 10 miles out of Quinton, the close by Birmingham suburb the place she became introduced up.
Soundless sitting in her dining room, Liz convened an incident assembly over the cell phone with hospital personnel. There became a listing of things to study: That the patient became receiving the finest that you just would possibly well perhaps presumably furthermore imagine care. That the personnel on the ward had been chuffed with what they had been doing. Which an infection precautions wished to be place in space.
The temper became peaceable. Each person had a concept to utilize. But this became uncharted territory. “I mediate we had been wide awake that we would doubtlessly be getting extra circumstances within days,” says Liz.
For a while now, a Yorkshireman named Paul Hudson had furthermore been ready for that the outbreak would reach Dudley – and pondering exhausting about easy how one can respond. But the predominant case came as a shock: “It wasn’t from somewhere we expected.”
Paul’s job became divided in two. He spent half of his time as guide anaesthetist on the hospital, a characteristic he’d occupied since 2009, and different half of as deputy clinical director of the belief that runs it.
Image caption Paul Hudson
As the virus approached, he’d been intently animated about planning what to enact – drawing up new pointers; working out easy how one can “zone” new arrivals on the entrance door into Covid and non-Covid streams; surroundings up a respiratory emergency department; and making obvious there became sufficient stuff – oxygen, personal protective equipment, ventilators, medication and folks.
“We had, I mediate, reasonably a right concept in space,” Paul says. It became right a query of ready for patients with extreme respiratory signs to originate showing up on the door.
But that wasn’t what came about, on the very least not in the muse.
“All of a unexpected, we had a patient – an in-patient – take a look at sure,” says Paul.
This individual became being treated for something else entirely, having been admitted earlier than they began showing signs. There had been protocols in space for dealing with a deliver of affairs care for this to remain the virus spreading – but it completely became a worldly originate the total same.
“I mediate that position the tone for substitute the next couple of weeks and months,” says Paul. “That has been, I mediate, indisputably one of the topics of this sickness – that it has been unpredictable.”
Qadar Zada sat in his office on the hospital. He’d been born not as much as a mile away and never lived anywhere different than Dudley. And but all the pieces around felt new to him.
In January 2020, Qadar had began as deputy head of operations on the belief. Section of his job involved making obvious clinical personnel had the total make stronger they must enact theirs. He’d spent his occupation working in NHS management and felt he had a right advice of what had to be performed. There became a grief, though – most of his colleagues had been strangers to him.
Image caption Qadar Zada
“For me, I mediate essentially the most inspiring danger in my idea became that I didn’t know folks in the organisation,” he says. The concept to give him a structured induction fell away. As the workload elevated, no-one had time for a getting-to-know-you chat: “So on the purpose that we had been talking to folks about planning things, I became having to introduce myself.”
There became furthermore the duty he, a local councillor, felt against his community. “I became jumpy, obviously, for those folks in Dudley, family that I in actuality catch in Dudley,” he says. “I became jumpy for colleagues in the belief as effectively. But I became furthermore attentive to all americans’s duty, including my possess.”
On 8 March, the day Tesco began restricting sales attributable to stockpiling and the UK In a foreign country Build apart of living of job suggested in opposition to travelling to northern Italy, Dudley’s first Covid-19 case became identified. Three days later, the predominant fatality in town attributed to the virus became reported in the native press. By 15 March the death toll stood at two, then rose to five by 18 March, then seven by the next day. On 20 March, Health Secretary Matt Hancock acknowledged the authorities became having a catch at why there became a “hotspot” across the West Midlands deliver.
In accordance with Liz, the patients who died in the early days of the outbreak in Dudley had been already very in unhappy health with underlying stipulations. Usually, these deaths came abruptly after prognosis. “By the time the end result became support, presumably within 24 hours, they’d died,” she says. “It became decided at that point that this would possibly occasionally be a terribly subtle disease to address.”
For everyone on the hospital, all this became new. “People had been studying what these patients understand care for when they came via the entrance door,” says Liz. “The severity of the sickness, and the breadth of folks it would possibly well perhaps perhaps furthermore catch an impact on, became reasonably of an study-opener.”
On the tip flooring of the administration block, a horny office suite in overall used for web web hosting seminars had been transformed. There had been knowledge boards across the walls and blinking computer monitors. A mask mask became tuned to the BBC Files channel across the clock.
This became the belief’s Covid incident room – a hub for all knowledge coming in and going out of the belief.
“We had been man-marking every single swab,” says Qadar. The incident room purchased contact tracing knowledge and produced deliver of affairs reports in some unspecified time in the future of the day. There became furthermore a PPE line for personnel who wished personal protective equipment.
Besides accomplishing its possess modelling of how the virus would possibly perhaps furthermore spread in Dudley, the belief became receiving projections from Public Health England, the native authority and different NHS companies.
They warned how contaminated the impending peak would possibly perhaps furthermore web. “At one point, the worst-case scenario, we had been trying to concept for receiving as much as 20 severely in unhappy health patients an hour for a preference of days,” says Paul. Inspire then, the hospital had right 9 ventilated beds and every other eight that equipped superior respiratory make stronger. “That right would not work, enact what I mean?”
On 23 March, the prime minister urged the UK: “It be valuable to preserve at home.” Dudley joined the relaxation of the country in lockdown. On the same time, the surge in patient numbers everyone had been watching for became foundation.
Usually, “the folk right here are stoical and tend to most as much as the moment leisurely – a salt-of-the-earth variety thing”, says Liz – but that wasn’t the case to any extent extra. Covid patients had been beginning to flip up on the doors in pretty numbers, and a valuable proportion of them had been extremely unwell. In accordance with Paul, those that weren’t already acutely sick when they arrived would on the total deteriorate abruptly within days.
Between 23 and 25 March, the preference of confirmed circumstances in town jumped from 26 to 40. By 27 March, the preference of Covid-connected deaths stood at 17; four days later, that resolve had merely about doubled to 30.
Spherical this time, a workaround for the concerns about ventilator capability equipped itself.
The belief had purchased steering that a selection of non-invasive air drift called Right Obvious Airway Stress (CPAP) will most definitely be worthwhile for Covid patients – either as a bridge to the abnormal mechanical air drift ways or as a substitute for them.
The Navy had been drafted in to voice famous gives care for PPE and oxygen to hospitals, and Paul recalls telling an officer – “I puny one you not, his name became Predominant Tom” – that he jumpy the hospital became under-resourced when it came to CPAP machines. Soon afterwards a lorry modified into up with 25 of them.
“And at that point, you would possibly well perhaps presumably furthermore in actuality feel the temper across the gap trade reasonably bit,” says Paul: it gave clinical personnel the conceitedness that they’d presumably furthermore merely take hold of therapy decisions on the root of patient need, not hospital capability.
Ten working theatres and a recovery home had been transformed right into a broad serious care facility, and the respiratory and excessive-dependency wards had been transformed right into a Covid-most inspiring CPAP unit ward.
It wasn’t a moment too soon. The peak arrived in early April.
The parts of the hospital reserved for routine therapy had been eerily gentle. In accordance with Paul, “Our non-Covid work right fell off the fringe of the cliff.” But in the Covid zones, the tempo became turning into frenetic.
By Sunday 5 April – the day the prime minister became admitted to hospital in London having already tested sure – the preference of confirmed circumstances in the borough of Dudley had soared to 283. Three days later, it became announced that the preference of hospital deaths stood at 106.
Liz recalls a single day in early April during which 58 new sure take a look at outcomes from the hospital came via, and never feeling in particular taken aback by the number.
For many of that month, anaesthetic and serious care medics worked an intensive shift sample – three long days, three days off, three nights, three extra days off. Workers worked exterior their comfort zones, accomplishing duties and working in departments that weren’t a part of their day jobs. Conserving rotas fully staffed modified into a giant danger, not right for clinical doctors and nurses but in the entire thing of the hospital – at one point many of of staff had been absent, either because they’d fallen in unhappy health themselves or they had been following advice to self-isolate.
The stress faced by these entrance-line staff became unprecedented, says Paul.
“Attempting to shout via the disguise at folks you barely recognise because you would possibly well perhaps presumably furthermore most inspiring watch the strip of their eyes – while the patients had been extremely unwell and at possibility of very acute deterioration,” he says. “You catch you make growth – and all of a unexpected, they’d catch these surges of deterioration the place for the next four to 6 hours you are right trying to retain the tide support.”
The prohibition on visiting made the process even more difficult, he adds: “No longer having the kinfolk there to focus on with effectively, and having to enact all the pieces shouted via a disguise down the cell phone – I mediate it made it very, very, very subtle for substitute our personnel.”
“Your entire decisions are reasonably bit extra annoying,” recalls Liz. “Your existence has change right into a extremely slim spectrum since the world’s shut down around you. So either you are at home, otherwise you are at work, and when your work is care for mine…. I purchased to the purpose the place I stopped listening to the recordsdata because I would possibly perhaps furthermore been dealing with it all day.” So that you just can add to the breakdown in boundaries between her home and authentic lives, Liz’s daughter became working on a Covid ward in Sheffield as a junior doctor. “It be been a family industry,” she adds dryly.
The hospital never ran out of PPE – the belief, aided by the devoted cell phone line in the incident room, did its job. But the native community performed a truly valuable characteristic, too, in combating shares from working out. “At one point, volunteers had been making visors because we couldn’t web any,” says Qadar. One guide surgeon helped supply acetate for the entrance of them with the abet of his daughter, a teacher, who all once more and all once more ordered it for research room gives.
“At one point I became carrying a pair of goggles donated to us by the chemistry department at a local college,” says Paul. “Regarded as one of my colleagues had a welder’s disguise, which looked in actuality sizable – it became a extra or much less a mirrored dusky lens that became reasonably much less essential when trying to understand after folks, because you couldn’t watch via it.”
One evening, Paul modified into up for a nightshift to catch there had been no new Covid patients. Then the next evening, there wasn’t every other patient either. After which a pair of days passed without to any extent extra.
The hospital personnel would possibly perhaps furthermore delivery to catch that the height had passed.
Planning the recovery stage will most definitely be the next danger. The non-emergency workload began to climb all once more, too. And everyone became effectively wide awake they wished to address for the likely for subsequent spikes in infections.
But because the abnormal Thursday evening clapping ritual drew to an dwell, they had been ready to grab pleasure in what they’d executed.
“You would possibly well perhaps furthermore understand support and genuinely watch that while what became performed became in actuality, looking out back, reasonably amazing in actuality,” says Liz. “I mediate there is peaceable reasonably little bit of grief in the background about a second wave. But I mediate having performed it once earlier than, I mediate everyone knows what we have to enact.”

Now, no new circumstances had been detected there for six weeks. Essay: Lolita
Girly: Sarah K. Cleaver on Tumblr nymphets
BY SARAH KATHRYN CLEAVER ON 18 NOVEMBER 2014.
These girls are wasting their youth fetishising it, treating it as a theme to be curated, collected and carefully documented.
In August 2013, paparazzi snapshots of Bradley Cooper and Suki Waterhouse were posted on the Mail Online and several other gossip sites. The two were pictured in various sprawling poses as they relaxed in a park in Paris reading - here's the crux - Lolita. The accompanying headlines all reported a similar narrative, but none more hysterically than Perez Hilton; 'Bradley Cooper’s Life Imitates Art As He Reads Lolita To Barely Legal Girlfriend Suki Waterhouse.' The already easy to grasp point was hammered home with the aid of Hilton’s famous Photoshop paint skills -  '21 is just 12 backwards.’ One of these images in particular, - Waterhouse sitting with Cooper's head resting between her denim dungarees-clad legs as he presumably reads a favourite passage aloud - has multiplied endlessly on Tumblr, liked and reblogged hundreds of thousands of times. fallinhardforhim reblogged this from withloveclaudia, yourlittlegirllala reblogged this from moody-nymph, goodbye-lolita liked this. Spot the trend?
A controversial book since its publication, Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita is considered by many to be one of the 20th century's greatest novels but is widely famous largely due to its controversial subject matter - a man in his thirties sexually obsessed with a 12-year-old girl.
According to an interview in the New Yorker with John Bertram, co-author of Lolita: The Story of a Cover Girl: Vladimir Nabokov’s Novel in Art and Design, there have been roughly two hundred Lolita covers since its original blank canvas, which featured black lettering over a shade of green reminiscent of old school exercise books. Somehow, in failing (or not even attempting) to illustrate what was inside, erotic fiction publishers Olympia Press managed to create the dirtiest of dirty book covers. Almost sixty years, two film adaptations and countless references and misrepresentations in popular culture later, it's still a book that garners a curious glance or two from fellow commuters on the tube.
The conflicts inherent in Lolita stem from the impossibility of re-capturing what has been perfectly expressed by Nabokov in those 300 or so pages; the co-existence of obsessive love and self-serving tyranny. Writer Mary Gaitskill in the introduction to The Story of a Cover Girl cites this as the reason why Lolita cover art is so often poorly attempted; 'such impossible, infernal combinations there are in all of us, and we know it. That Lolitarenders this human condition at such an extreme, so truthfully… is this book's most shocking quality… It is also why no one will ever succeed in describing it fully on a book jacket.' Despite this difficulty, references are rife, from pop song lyrics to the long-standing Japanese 'gothic lolita' fashion The young women who have appropriated Lolita on Tumblr are practically a trope in their own right.
The nymphet community is an online subculture revolving around Lolita, its themes and its accompanying imagery. The fandom spans a diverse range of Lolita interpretations, from superficial feeds of anything pastel-coloured, to the almost inventorial, right through to the pornographic and upsettingly dark , As with any following, the community contains those die-hard fans who insist on authenticity alongside those who are along purely for the aesthetic. As one blogger complains; 'whenever I see people that think Lolita is romantic I wanna cry. Have u even read the book/ seen the movie or are you just in the nymphet community to be kool #nymphet #lolita.'
While the spectrum is broad, the average nymphet blog will usually contain at least one of a list of typical references. Firstly, and obviously, Lolita. Quotes from the book, stills, memes and GIFs from either film. Kubrick's 1962 is better stylistically, but Adrian Lynne's 1997 version is the more popular, probably because it's closer to the book, darker, more sexual and far less perfect. Dominique Swain's screen test from the same film denotes a real Lolita buff, as do the deleted scenes found on the DVD. Other 'age-gap' films seen over and over include Pretty Baby (1978), The Crush (1992), My Little Princess (2011), Sleeping Beauty (2011) and Jeune et Jolie(2013). Then there are vintage signifiers, pulp novel covers ranging in levels of bad taste (my personal favourite Daddy I'm Coming), photographs of vintage underwear, Parisian street photographs. There's the personal posts, 'I dropped my pen in a lecture today and two guys and the lecturer went to fetch it for me and is this nymphet power or what? #nymphet #thoughts.' And finally, the porn - huge amounts of porn. 'It's all American Beauty and cum!' exclaims a colleague as we scroll through one of the afore-mentioned pages belonging to a girl named ‘pulp-princess’. All this content is displayed on blogs that have been painstakingly coded to pink-tinted perfection (no basic Tumblr templates for these girls) and soundtracked by the mournful strains of Lana del Rey: 'I'll wait for you babe, that's all I'll do babe, you don't come through babe, you never do. 'Cause I'm pretty when I cry.'
Del Rey pops up a lot on these blogs. She’s a fellow, if honorary (given her age), nymphet. When interviewed, the singer-songwriter, whose real name is Lizzie Grant, cites Lolita as a reference, describing the sound of her first album as 'Lolita lost in the hood.' There is even a track on Born To Die named Lolita, but it's Off to the Racesthat borrows most heavily from both the book and the 1997 film. 'Swimming pool, glimmering darling' - a deleted swimming pool scene, 'Light of my life, fire of my loins' - a direct quote from page one, 'Give me them gold coins, Give me them coins' - another scene in which coins spill over an unmade bed as the couple fight over money that Humbert has bribed Lo with in return for sex. The list continues, even the songs that don't reference Lolitastill evoke that same type of doomed love.
Over the years many young women have probably read Lolita, liked the book and maybe even identified with aspects of the character, but it's only with the prevalence of the internet that you can observe the vast, primarily young and female fandom. Why this character? She has no agency or voice of her own in the book or either film, most of her lines are responses to what is being done to her. But it's her they're interested in, not so much her step-father/lover/abuser Humbert Humbert (affectionately known as Hum) even though the nymphets claim to be interested in older men. And though Tumblr is an aesthetically-led form of social media, for many of these users it's not quite as simple as style over substance either.  This isn't a tentative grasp on the vague and various meanings attached to Lo over the years. Theirs is an informed obsession, not just an attraction to Bert Stern's pictures of Sue Lyon in heart shaped glasses.
With its vast proportion of teenage users, Tumblr is an angsty place. When discussing nostalgia and the internet in a panel discussion on Marques Almeida’s S/S 15 show, SHOWstudio founder Nick Knight pointed out that Tumblr’s community appear to fixate on the dark, the unhappy and the melancholy. 'There's a certain obsession with sadness on Tumblr, sadness seems to be kind of around at the moment… You see things that magazines on the whole won't show. Self harm, food obsessions. Things that are personal. A fascination for death. I do think it ties in with a global movement.'
Western young women today arguably have more options than ever before, but there's a pressure that arises from that to accomplish more. When you never quite feel like you’re getting enough right it makes sense to fetishise the wrong. It's not unusual to find something upsetting enough to make you close the tab in a nymphet blog; the gruesome dismembered body of Elizabeth Short (aka The Black Dahlia) just down the page from a pinterest-y shot of pastel colour silk dresses hanging in a vintage wardrobe. A violent pornographic image transformed into a meme with the darkly romantic Arctic Monkeys lyrics 'crawling back to you', then later a GIF of spindly spiders fighting in the corner of a ceiling. Reading Lolita in Tehran author Azar Nafisi points out that Lolita's real name Dolores means sorrow, and Lolita blogs are always sad. While at face value a curation of the sexualisation of young girls, on closer inspection nymphet blogs document tragedy. The type of femininity these young women – and for that matter Lana del Rey - have chosen to identify with is one that is doomed from the start. Either Oscar Wilde or George Bernard Shaw said youth is wasted on the young. These particular girls are wasting theirs fetishising it, treating youth as a theme to be curated, collected and carefully documented.
It's this juxtaposition of the cute and girlish with the violent that expresses the core theme of Lolita better than any blonde teen sucking a lollypop on numerous book jackets ever can.
This is an essay written alongside ‘Girly’ - the fashion film. It remarks on the ‘Lolita movement’ and really converses the message I am aiming to portray in my concept as well. I italicised and made bold, key points that I thought really struck a chord with what is going on. The polar opposite ideal I am discussing, and how the sweetness and innocence of ‘Lolita’ is so revolting against the sinister darkness of the paedophilic behaviour occurring in the story. Dolores is a minor, it’s just a game to her,
