So much America in one story, including how the one victim's family had to drive him to the hospital because they knew they couldn't afford an ambulance.

Jerecho Loveall was near the bar door, chatting with friends over the thumping hip-hop when the man in the body armor walked into Club Q shortly before midnight and opened fire.

“By the time I turned around, the bullets were flying around my head, breaking the glass around me,” Mr. Loveall, 30, a father of three, said. “Something brought me to the ground.”

Crouched near the stage, Leia Arnold, 20, a performer, said she watched, frozen, as a bartender — a gentle man known for his efforts to provide a welcoming atmosphere for transgender patrons — was hit. On the dance floor, Joshua Thurman, 34, a fast-food worker who sometimes moonlighted as a Club Q go-go dancer, thought the popping noise was part of the music. Then came another burst, and the flash of a gun in the strobe lights and people started to run.

Witnesses recounted scenes of pandemonium and horror as Colorado Springs, a city of some 480,000 people south of Denver, reeled from another American mass shooting, this time at a well known L.G.B.T.Q. bar in a city that only in recent decades has emerged from a long history of hostility toward L.G.B.T.Q. communities.

Felicia Juvera, 34, said she and her boyfriend, Gil Rodriguez, 32, were sipping beers, supporting their friend who was the D.J. that night, when a series of bangs startled them. Mr. Rodriguez flipped a table, yelled “Get down,” and listened as the bangs got closer.

He got on top of Ms. Juvera, who prayed to herself as she heard screams muffled by the dance music. Mr. Rodriguez said that when the suspect was subdued by patrons in the patio area of the club, he rushed to the D.J. booth to turn off the music and heard cries for help from people who were bleeding.

Authorities confirmed five people dead on Sunday, with more than two dozen wounded. The suspect, Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, was in custody as police investigated his motive, they said. The bar’s owners, Matthew Haynes and Nic Grzecka, said surveillance video had shown the suspect firing into the crowd with an AR-15 rifle before two patrons subdued him; local authorities said one bystander wrested away a handgun the gunman was carrying, hit him with it and then pinned him to the ground with the help of another patron until police arrived.

For traumatized survivors, the loss was incalculable. “She was going to be at my house for Thanksgiving,” Natalee Skye Bingham, 25, said, mourning a friend who was among the five people believed killed in the shooting. “She was like a trans mother to me.”

Mr. Loveall, who said he had been going to Club Q for more than a decade, said he heard screams as he lay face down on the ground, waiting for the shooting to end. When it did, he saw the gunman pinned to the ground by a “larger gentleman,” a bar patron he didn’t know.

The club was still dark, the strobe lights were still going and the music was still playing, he said, and it wasn’t until later that he felt pain in his leg and realized he was bleeding. When he got to St. Francis Hospital, he said — his family drove him to avoid an ambulance bill — he “was informed there was a through and through bullet wound in my leg.”

I see just a split-second of surprise in Felicia's eyes before she gives us a wide, brilliant smile.

"Kenzie dear, that's wonderful news!" she says, and then turns on that easy Aldrich charm; it draws Malia in as quickly as it did me, and soon they're chatting away like old friends.

After a long chat, and assuring herself that Pomegranate and I are doing fine, Felicia promises to check back in a few weeks. Then she signs off and I tuck the phone back away.

Malia makes a thoughtful sound. "Okay, if the brother is like her, I guess I understand why you asked him to be daddy."

There's still a little hesitation in her tone, but only time - and me loving her - will resolve that, I think.

And yes. I’m aware that Hugh and Lucas have been part of the X Men cast. But. I can’t use Guy Pearce as Norman because he’s already been Aldrich Killian. And actors seem to jump from franchise to franchise nowadays (Laurence Fishburne as Perry White in the dceu and then Bill Foster in the MCU) so why can’t Hugh play a hero in the xmen franchise and a villain in the Spider-Man films. As for Lucas I just think he could pull it off. Especially if they make Johnny and Sue twins. And I really really really want Mitchell Hope in a big budget superhero movie. Hell they can pull a switch and have Harry Osborn be the main villain instead of Norman for a change but please just get him in there. I’m literally begging you marvel. It’s what he deserves after Disney channel treated him like shit. And him and Tom and Zendaya and Jacob in interviews together would be fucking amazing. You can not deny that the power would be unwieldy. So why not let me have this. Please. Just let me have this
