The cold ground provided no comfort.
Felix Catton x reader
Summary: The reader finds Felix in the maze after a strange encounter with Oliver. They decide to drink their problems away.
Words: 910
Warning: drinking, death, poisoning, cursing.
Author's note: This was a request and DUDE IT'S GOOD! Here's the original ask: "hi! can you write something where the reader is Felix's best friend (they both have feelings for each other), and she finds him just as Oliver leaves him in the maze with the bottle of alcohol he drugged. neither reader nor felix know it's spiked so they're drinking it together and they die together? if it's too much you can totally ignore this!" Hope I did it justice!

................................................................
She pushed her legs to move faster as she ran through the maze in search for Felix. She had been to Saltburn many times, and she had been through this maze just as many, but now it felt like she knew nothing of the place.
But she knew Felix was there. Of course, he would be there. That’s where he goes to think or when he’s overwhelmed. They often shared intimate moments at the heart of that maze when things became difficult. She loved those moments with him. She loved the feeling it gave her when he wrapped his arms around him. She loved the look in his eye when she said something witty. She loved when his lips would pull into a smirk. God, she loved him. But, she would never admit so.
Her sprinting was interrupted by hitting what felt like a brick wall.
Oliver.
Oliver Quick was a confusing being. While initially she was excited to have him stay at Saltburn with the Catton’s, she slowly grew to see that he was a little more than strange.
She balanced herself, gawking at him slightly. “Oh, Oli. Thank god. Have you,” she paused, catching her breath, “Have you seen Felix?”
Though it was dark, she could still see the hesitant look in his eye. He turned his body to the side, pointing in the direction he had just come from.
She nods, placing a hand on his shoulder, “Thank you. Thank you so much.” She began to walk in that direction before stopping. “You okay, Oliver?”
“I’m not sure.”
She nods. This party was becoming a nightmare. But she didn’t have time to make sure he was alright. She needed to find Felix first.
She needed to know he was alright.
Her legs began to sprint again in search of him. And, she finally found him.
She rounded the corner, letting out a soft breath at the sight of him. He was so beautiful.
He stood, leaning against the statue that lay in the middle of the maze. His angel wings were still on him. It was dark, but she could see in his stature that something was wrong. Very wrong.
She approached him slowly, her feet crunching the ground with every step.
He turned, an angry look in his eyes. They immediately softened seeing that it was her. “Oh, angel. Didn’t hear you.”
She nods, continuing to close the gap between them. “Sorry. Had to see you were alright.”
His lips pulled into the grin that she loved so much. “Yeah, angel. Just… had something happen.”
She rested her hand on his chest gently. “With Oli?”
He nods.
She wished she could take the heartache from him. The pain. She would carry it deep within her heart if she could, just to keep it from reaching his soul. He didn’t deserve any of this.
She looked down to see the alcohol bottle resting on the ground. “You been drinking, Lex?”
He nods again, his shoulders relaxing under her touch.
She shrugs, “Well, don’t let it go to waste, huh?”
He grins slightly. “I like the way you think, angel.”
Angel. Her heart always lept at the word every time it came from his lips. His angel. She was his angel.
 He reached down to pick up the bottle, pulling it to her lips.
A little while later, and a few drinks later, they both sat on the ground. His back rested against the base of the statue, her back against his chest. Her head laid against his shoulder. She felt his lips began to kiss her neck. “…Fe..?”
He hums.
“W… what.. you doing?”
His lips grin against her neck, “Dunno. But… it feels… right.”
He was right. This felt right. It felt perfect. Like they were meant for each other.
She moved her head to look at him, their faces inches apart.
“I… I think I… I love you, Lex.”
Their lips were mere inches from touching.
He stared down at her lips, his jaw clenching and unclenching.
Perhaps this was a bad idea. They were both quite drunk, and their friendship meant everything to each other. But they didn’t care enough to worry if this would ruin them.
He leaned in to her, their lips brushing before she pulled back with a horrid feeling. “Imma be sick…”
She crawled forward in case she would vomit. Something felt wrong. Perhaps it was alcohol poisoning. She already knew the hangover tomorrow would be horrendous.
He pulled himself to his feet ungracefully. He stumbled towards her, falling to his knees at her side. “Angel…?”
She let out a groan. “Just… hold me, Fe…? Pl… Please?”
Even sober, he would never deny her.
He pulls her to him, letting his arms wrap around her as her head laid on his chest. She could feel his uneven breaths in her hair.
“I feel… dizzy, Lex. I’m… tired…”
“Fuck. Lay… Lay down. Let’s lay down.”
He pulled her down with him, their bodies laying on the cold dirt. He rested on his back, his eyes closed and his hand still on her waist. She cuddled close to him, her arm laying over his torso.
His voice was a mutter, “Close your eyes, angel. I.. I gotchu.”
She didn’t need to be told twice.
Her eyes closed.
….
The two lovers lay dead in the morning, holding each other close, for the cold ground would never provide comfort to the lost.

you dont get to desire oliver as an evil mastermind, bc we see its not true. weve seen him lick a bathtub and keysmash his way to milf murder. but you also dont get to desire him as a poor little meow meow, bc we've seen him make calculated decisions to exploit the cattons implicit bias to his advantage and fuck over farleigh and venetia, even beyond the point that its necessary. hes not an antagonist you can morally condemn but secretly admire and sexualize for their power, nor a protagonist you can morally condone and pity and sexualize for their weakness. he is not wholly helpless. and even to the degree that he is, being helpless to his desires to achieve an even higher level of privilege does not make his methods any more savory, because its PRIVILEGE.
oliver is a tragic figure in that he represents the way the upper middle class idealize an achievement that is ultimately hollow and can only be gained by destroying everything that makes life worth living: a romanticized dream of ultimate wealth. felix is the living embodiment of the privileged white supremacist upper class, and how they see themselves: generous. attractive. deserving of their wealth because of their very refusal to admit - or even truly appreciate - the power it grants them, which they mistake for real humility.
but outside of olivers unreliable narration, we see that this is a fucking lie. the generosity of the rich isnt given out of true sympathy, but repulsion masked as pity, fuled by a desire to retain ones status via the appearance of deserving it due to ones beauty, whiteness, and perceived moral highground. and this is never more apparent as when that pity is finally revoked from those it begs for an excuse to openly revile: people of color.
saltburn evokes in us a desire for the *style* of wealth, and a repulsion for the *substance* of how its acheived: through lying and scheming, racism and sexism, rape and murder. to surround oneself with beauty and avoid ugliness of any sort is to drown in blood and choke on vomit and cry into a cold grave, because you deem your grief itself too ugly to feel. and worse, admitting it was your desire that drove the real substance of the thing you were craving - love through admiration - into an early grave is too much to bear.
so. you will flick the dirt from your suit and suck the tears back in your eyes and tell yourself for the rest of your life it was out of righteous repulsion. you will ressurect the ghosts of your victims and tell yourself theyre just trophies, because for all your desire to be alone, you cant stomach living in an empty house that wasnt even yours to begin with. and the physical reminder of your trail of graves to the center of the maze, is the last shred of substance you have left. but hey. at least youre dancing naked in style, right?

I just realize you're the only person who point out that Felix and Kagami would be just as in the wrong for hiding the truth from Adrien. Most people I know puts the blame entirely on Marinette and like yeah, I get it it's really bad she would keep something like that a secret from her boyfriend but at the same time how do you deal with that big of a burden?
If it were up to me, I'd make her deal with it the same way like in the Dragon Prince with how Rayla tries to tell Callum and Ezran about their dad being dead but idk, maybe it's not the same with Adrien so it's unfair.
I'm just irritated at people who blame Marinette just cuz she's her gf and not at the adults like Nathalie or Amelie, Marinette's a child, what about Felix and Kagami? They care about Adrien too right?
Yep, it's somehow all Marinette's fault even though Felix knew for all of season five. He knew before then, too, but at least you could argue that he was fearing for his life in previous seasons. As soon as he got the peacock? No excuse. Especially since he got the peacock by trading away Adrien's freedom. A thing he arguably didn't even need to do since I don't think anyone believes that Gabriel would have said, "No" to only getting all of the miraculous. Felix just offers up the ring without even waiting for Gabriel to ask for it. A master negotiator this boy is not.
To add even more insult to injury, season five gives Felix a subplot about informing freaking Kagami and faking her amok. A girl he literally just met gets the treatment that Felix arguably owes to Adrien after all the shit Felix has put him through. You can't even argue that Felix did it because Tomoe isn't a threat on the scale of Gabriel. She's literally a co-conspirator in season five and Felix knows that because Kagami wouldn't be a sentimonster if Tomoe wasn't involved. And Tomoe has always been written as far more hands-on than Gabriel when it comes to controlling her kid, so this isn't even a case of Felix picking the easier target. He doesn't care about easy targets or subterfuge since he, you know, kidnaps Kagami in front of her mother?
But does anyone in the fandom seem to acknowledge that? No and I really don't get it. If hate must be assigned to a character and not the writers, then Felix deserves so much more hate than Marinette.
Kagami isn't innocent either. She knew the truth for about half of the season and yet she doesn't seem to care about telling Adrien. At the same time, she's fine outing Ladybug's secret identity and fine telling Marinette everything, none of which is done in the name of justice. Kagami does it all for purely selfish reasons. To me, this was as much of a character assassination as the whole Kagami believing Lila thing even though Kagami should know the truth about Lila after the Oni-chan incident (Lila faking the kissing picture and texting it to Adrien's contacts).
Then there's Nathalie. In my opinion, Nathalie's redemption is a joke and one of the key reasons for that is how little she cares about actually saving Adrien. At no point does she tell him the truth even though she knows she's dying. She could have very easily died much sooner than the final, leaving Adrien to obey Gabriel's commands, never knowing that he was being controlled. She doesn't even try to find someone else to guard Adrien's ring. She just maintains the status quo and pretends that everything is fine while occasionally asking Gabriel to pretty please change his mind and think of Adrien? Please?
Lady, you literally pinned this man to a table at the start of the season and you are his second in command. You know all his secrets. You have access to everything. You have the power to take him down. You have the power to save Adrien. You are an awful, awful mother figure who put Gabriel's wants above Adrien's needs right up to the very end. Did you even think you had a chance to fire that cross bow or was this just another, "I'm totally helping" feel good moment to assuage your guilty conscious before you died?
And Amelie. Oh, Amelie. If you hate what Colt did to your son, then why are you idly standing by while Gabriel does the same thing to your nephew? You know that Felix has the peacock, so he's safe from being snapped. Why aren't you encouraging him to help Adrien? Or, if you want to keep protecting Felix, then why don't YOU go to Ladybug and Chat Noir and tell them that Gabriel is behind everything? Surely you have to know that Felix isn't safe as long as Gabriel has all those miraculous, right? Gabriel knows that you and your son know everything. A terrorist knows that you're a chink in his armor. Why aren't you terrified by that?
In summary: yeah, Marinette should tell Adrien. It's totally fair to be mad at her. But dear God, she should never have been put in a position where she needed to tell him because one of these four should have done it long before the end of season five! The fact that Marinette was put in this position in the first place is terrible, nonsensical, illogical writing. So go ahead and be mad at Marinette, but you sure as shit better be just as mad at the people who knew everything and did nothing, leaving a teenage girl to face it all alone while bearing the safety of the world on her shoulders.

People in the saltburn tag deifying Felix like the movie didn't demonstrate that he does the exact same thing as Elsbeth - takes people in when they're interesting and he can feel good about "helping" them until he gets bored (multiple people say multiple times that he's does this charity-case thing before). He pretends not to care about his Status, he's flippant about it, but when Farleigh asks for money he goes completely Lord of the Manor with very little provocation. Oliver's bike plan wouldn't have worked so well if Felix hadn't been so entitled as to manipulate him into walking his bike back to the dorms. His ability (and willingness) to be the one to shine a light on someone and then turn it away at his leisure is a big part of his character and the class commentary of the piece.
He does do and say nice things. But a handful of people SHOULDN'T hold the power to become gods of their own little worlds due to money and fear of loss of opportunity, no matter how nice and personable they initially presnt themselves (of believe themselves) to be. Does he "deserve" his wealth any more than Oliver does by the fact of being born into it? I certainly don't think so.

Felix’s perception of marriage
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just wanted to say that in my readings Felix can be a sunshine with brownies or a serious man that will not tolerate your bullshit. I’m actually shocked how much his energy can change depending on a question
Just from the start that chariot revered is an answer if he would be willing to marry right now. And this is a no. He doesn’t want to get married right now, however it isn’t just a straight no. He wants to marry in the future but he doesn’t want to rush into it. It’s not because he is scared of it, he wants to make a rational decision. He is aware he might be used for his money and status but he’s more “you think I’m that stupid to not know what you want from me?”. Felix thinks it’s actually hilarious that people would try that with him. He knows it’s hard to find someone to build a stable and loving relationship with and he will wait for them as long as he has to. He will not settle down for anything less than he deserves. And he wants someone loving, nurturing. Someone that will reciprocate his feeling, matches his energy. If he gives you his love, he expects to receive it back. And he will not stay in a marriage without love. It’s a contract but there have to be feelings between them.

Honestly how i see it is that Gabriel didn't win.
He died not being able to reunite with his wife which was his original wish. All his original plan was to a) defeat Ladybug b) rewrite the past even if that meant Adrien wouldnt exist because he loved Emilie more
But he did not. He got his ass beaten by Marinette. She had to detransform for him to actually do "something" and in the end it wasnt a wish for him, it was, finally, for his son.
No, he didnt deserve the statue. But that wasnt because Gabriel won
It's because TOMOE did
She needed to get her ass cleaned out of the business. I mean, the Alliance rings were the reason everyone in the world got into the Nightmare Event. She was the main engineer behind it all. So the best thing to do to not make her suspicious of working with Monarch? The fucking statue. THAT WAS ALL HER DOING.
So for me, apart of Lila, Tomoe is going to be a problem. Remember that she also tortured Kagami and she hasnt spoken about it either, nor Felix. And Nathalie knows Tomoe was working with Gabriel.
The kids need to speak about it, Adrien has the right to know. Like Marinette says "this happiness is momentary" because yes, Adrien deserved a bit of peace and freedom after years of imprisonment before the truth is finally revealed in the next season.
So, at least for me, Gabriel didn't win since he isnt there to keep torturing his son
But he deserved worse

Saltburn and the Liberal Myth that Rich People are Bumbling Idiots
“If you could press a button that would give you a great deal of money, but it would cause someone you don’t know in a distant part of the world to die, then you would have a good model for how our current economy works.”
-Welcome To Nightvale episode 105
Saltburn (2023) is another quirky ‘eat the rich’ movie that is entrenched with liberal myths. The most predominant myth being that rich people are simply stupid and confused. That naivety and simple-mindness leaves them vulnerable to being exploited  punished by the clever, lower-class protagonist. Like other ‘eat the rich’ movies including The Menu (2022) and Parasite (2019), Saltburn plays into the ridiculousness of wealth disparity. The Catton family lives in a giant estate, while protagonist, Oliver Oliver, presents himself as solidly lower-class. Every shot of the Catton’s sprawling estate seems to say, “Look! All this wealth and lavishness, it’s SO excessive! The Catton’s don’t need this much! They don’t even know how to use it correctly.” That’s the liberal fantasy that ‘eat the rich’ movies love to parade out. Wealth disparity isn’t the problem, the real class issue is that some people don’t deserve the wealth they have.
There is this idea that rich people are naive and out of touch. Their sheltered lifestyle prevents them from developing the shrewdness and ‘street smarts’ of poorer individuals. That people who earn their wealth are good and noble, but their children are now lazy, selfish snobs. This idea that those who start from a place of poverty and oppression can rise above and become a member of the wealthy ruling class is truly one of capitalist Amerika’s most devious lies. It protects the current system from meaningful scrutiny by falsely implying that anyone can become rich and that those who become rich deserve to be rich. It ignores that fact that the wealthy ruling class only achieve their status through the oppression of other people. It implies that those who ‘do their own dirty work’ are good, but those who have since become removed from it, by being born into wealth, are bad. The issue, of course, is that this level of wealth disparity is bad regardless of how one achieves it.
Saltburn (2023) presents human relationships as transactional. Further positioning it as a truly liberal film which cannot imagine a world without capitalism. Barry Keoghan offers an unsettling portrayal of the film’s protagonist. Perhaps the audience’s unease at Keoghan’s performance comes more from seeing themselves as Oliver, rather than Keoghan doing anything actually disturbing. To see plainly, how every relationship Oliver has is superficial and cultivated purely for personal gain is upsetting for those who cannot imagine their existence outside of capitalism. The horror comes from knowing that there is something wrong, but not having any solution. For Jacob Elordi’s role as love interest and son of the wealthy elite, Felix Catton offers a nice contrast to the repulsive desperation that Oliver exhibits. Felix exhibits the cool, sophistication that the wealthy elites are known for. A kind of swagger that only comes from power that poorer folk will never possess. However, Elordi is conventionally attractive and Felix comes across as charitable, and that excuses the major character flaws we see unfold throughout the film.
None of this is to suggest that Oliver is a good person. The film’s ending reveals just how opportunistic Oliver actually is. This revelation weakens the film overall and undermines anything that might have been accomplished earlier. The film spoonfeds audience a play-by-play of how the events actually unfolded. Even without this hamfisted ending, the film falls flat. What is the purpose of Oliver? What is the purpose of this portrayal of rich naivety? The scenes of shocking depravity seem unmoored. As though the creators of this film wanted desperately to say something of substance but couldn’t come up with anything.
Like most ‘eat-the-rich’ films, Saltburn crumbles at the end because what is there to say if one isn’t prepared to actually confront capitalism? Saltburn wants to be a scathing criticism of the current system, but it doesn’t. The film does not examine the relationships between worker and capitalist, between rich and poor, between Oliver and Felix, in any meaningful way. Saltburn provides some shocking sequences and a promising plot, but has all the revolutionary power of liberalism.

What is your opinion about the ending of Miraculous?
(I'm using this ask as my chance to talk about both episodes as a whole, not just the ending-- spoilers ahead!)
My thoughts on these two episodes are mixed, but positive overall. :)
Over all, I enjoyed the episodes. It was fun, the action and animation were great, and there are parts that I really really loved that are being adopted into all my kwami headcanons right now and no one can stop me. I was worried with how the season would end based off of some things I heard, and was prepared for the worst-- but these were enjoyable episodes to watch.
However I will not lie that I am not happy with how some characters were handled. I'm sorry but I will never be happy with Gabriel being seen as a hero, and the fact that Adrien wasn't there or even told what happened?? Gabriel getting a statue?? Gabriel acting like he cared about Adrien when he clearly didn't?? No... just no, its not right or fair. I could go on about this all day, but I won't as there's a lot to say about these episodes.
Adrien not getting a role in this finale I am mad at. Him being left in the dark about what happened I'm also not happy with, HOWEVER... seeing Marinette's age, mindset, and everything she's been through... I don't feel that her actions were out of character. I can see a young teenager under pressure wanting to protect the one she loves from a horrible reality. I'm not saying her keeping the truth from him is right, but I can see how it fits into the narrative. As long as the fact that this lie was told is addressed in the future (and the weight it will no doubt put on Adrien) and not just brushed aside, then I won't get up in arms about this scene yet, and I will wait to see how its handled in the future.
Last small little tiny thing is Felix. Like... it feels out of character for him to just be like "yeah hero team!" and for the hero team to be like "yeah Felix!" Feel like more should have been addressed on Felix's character as a whole.
Okay-- enough about the negative-- onto all the awesome parts about these episodes! :D
First of all-- hero team!! Full time holders!! Saved kwamis (I'm so sorry Nooroo that you're still out there you deserve so much better!!) I love it, this is what we needed, and I hope the identity rules ease up among the heroes after this.
Next Nathalie. Oh Nathalie, the queen, amazing-- 11/10 this episode. She full on goes in dying and is ready to shoot Gabriel with a crossbow?? Like girl, you're amazing!! I'm glad to see that she is better now, she deserves it. Anyways I love her.
Adrien getting his amok-- yes, finally.
Marinette's Ladybug and Black Cat unification was a lot of fun. Its too bad the name Lady Noire was already taken, but I loved this whole fight. A piano being dropped on Gabriel's head, Gabriel's reaction to Marinette being Ladybug. Marinette beating Gabriel and just summoning all the Luck Charms... she was a boss. I loved the checkmate scene. I love how she did try to reach out to Gabriel (not that he deserves a second chance but Marinette is just a sweetheart). I loved Gabriel's betrayal to her with a Vemon because it was his last in character moment, I loved that we got to see all the other characters in action. The classmates, Fei and the New York heroes. All great scenes.
Now finally onto the gold of these episodes: THE KWAMIS. Hehehehe they were amazing, they were beautiful. Yes give me all their true forms, give me Gimmi (hehe) they look SO cool and epic. I originally thought I wouldn't like a true-form kwami or a fusion form of them but never mind they're glorious they are my children we need true forms for all the kwamis look at how powerful they are!!
And how the Wish works... I never really liked the whole "destroy the universe and create a new one" idea they had going on in other episodes, and I'm so glad they went with an equal price. And maybe destroy and remake the universe still has a role in it all but give me the green strawberries as a price. The whole Wish scene with how it works and the true form of the kwamis was fantastic and I love it so much.

You say that 'Strong Female Characters' are rarely allowed to struggle. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? How much can a person struggle and still be called a “strong character”? Is the common standard in mainstream fiction different between men and women? Is Felix a strong character? Is Gabriel a strong character? What about Andre Bourgeois? I’ve got a feeling Astruc considers Andre a strong character.
Felix is not a strong character. He is a Wiley powerbroker, but we saw the moment things didn't go his way he folded like a deck of cards in front of Adrien and Kagami in Emotion and had a breakdown.
Andre is a sack of meat and little more.
Gabriel is... strong in a sense? the show is very inconsistent on this front. It has taken time, planning, willpower, and determination to preserve his wife and become hawkmoth in the first place. Facing setback after setback and continuing on, also takes strength. S5 kind of goes all over with him in a messy way though so in the end it's. 🤷‍♀️
Marinette is supposed to be the 'Strong Female Character' in the show. She has all the earmarks of the old stereotype. She is good at all things, she plows through and always ends up winning. Her mistakes are trivialized and her victories amplified. This is a shame because honestly, a Marinette who struggled a little more would be a heck of a lot more compelling(seen in the movie and in lots of fanfiction)
But wait! you say, she struggles a lot! Her struggles are all self-inflicted, and while self inflicted struggles are valid, they can't be the *only* struggles someone faces. No one was ever a serious 'threat' to her love story with Adrien. Kagami was allowed to get in the way for one whole episode (and this after Marinette herself had Luka waiting in the wings) Adienette was just waiting for the train to arrive at the station. On the super side there was some build up of tension early on, but when the main char's power is 'Win the battle with this thing' it's hard to heap too much tension. Not only that S5 very quickly turned losing all the Miraculous into just the status quo of one akuma at a time. *They were fighting Monarch with paintball guns and winning* No stakes.
Before Emotion/Pretension I would have said Kagami qualifies as a strong character. She struggles in love and friendship, but she works and tries to find a path through. Her greatest enemy in love is also one of her first friends. How's that for a challenge? Watching how she interacted with the adrienette dynamic from day 1 up to Protection was great. THEN she got foisted off onto Felix as a prize and sold out Ladybug. Girl deserved better.
There are plenty of strong female characters (which is different than 'Strong female character') in other media though. Adora, Luz, Willow just to name a couple off the top of my head.
The problem with finding them in ML is that the plot tends to jerk them around randomly. Like, I would like to say Ms. Bustier, because she holds to an ideal and does work to keep to it until the end. But she also ignored one of her students doing zero work in her class for multiple years. That's... not good. That is what makes you think the strength might be vapid apathy instead. See how hard this is?
Oh hey! Duh, Alya! Alya is definitely a strong character. I mean, she's the one who gets Marinette on her feet. She threads this path of upholding her morals while tempering them with reality. She doesn't hide behind 'identity rules' to avoid tough decisions. She *trusts* people, though it can be a risk. She helps those around her whenever she can. Yes she's stuck holding the idiot ball for plot purposes now and then, but it's so blatant when it happens I can't count it against her.

MLB Paris special
I've been saying it before and I'm saying it even louder now: these writers are good at self-contained episodes, it's serialisation they can't handle. This is yet another testament to the fact that when they get the time to flesh out their ideas and dwell on their details, this universe is brilliant.
That said, this is by far the weakest of the specials yet, thanks mostly to the way it falls back on some of the mawkiest lines this show has produced. Where Shanghai and NYC had moments of Our Heroes in genuinely dire situations, this one was essentially your normal akuma battle with a few extra bells and whistles, which they resolve by giving their emo counterparts a pep talk about how they can totally be good people like them, just look on the bright side of life! The lucky charm blatantly frames this as some sort of facing-your-inner-demons tale, which would have worked if
a) these had been doubts Marinette and Adrien had faced this very episode, but last time Adrien had a thought about the fact that he recently lost his mum in canon timeline was "Felix", and Marinette's experience in being bitter and alone was, oh yeah, never.
b) we had a bit more background on emoverse ladynoir than their telling us the reason they're angry
In essence: this brings about zero epiphanies to our ladynoir like the NYC special did, and emoverse ladynoir don't have the on-screen backstories like Fei for their turn-around to be narratively satisfying. Marinette's speech at Emobug reads like an inspirational quote our aunts post on Facebook; harmless, and true in essence, but ooooh boy the that's easy for you to say.
It works simultaneously better and worse with Adrien-Emonoir, where Adrien's side is A+ character moment and Emonoir's is jazz_music_stops.jpg because this boy lived better circumstances than our Adrien, but became a trigger-happy supervillain? and here I thought losing a parent and being neglected by the other one wasn't a sympathetic explanation for why you'd turn to violence against the world around you
Where NYC and Shanghai had my heart, this one was just sparkly, but sparkly at least in a way it's been a while since this show has felt.
(I mean, there's the "Gabriel Agreste is a hero at his core and deserved the statue" propaganda and "why yes, their team-up in the end can be taken as foreshadowing of Marinette's decision to side with Gabriel in the S5 finale being framed as a good and kind thing for Adrien", but I'll refrain from going into that wank. We're all strong independent adults capable of grappling with the unfortunate implications of a work of fiction)
Have some bullet points:
I called them "bells and whistles" but emoverse ladynoir carries this special alone, and boy howdy do they CARRY it
Some really nifty scenes here, with particular kudos to the slo-mo akumatisation of Cat Noir
ouch but the parallel akumatisation of father and son from different universes was an unfortunate one (see: "Gabriel is a hero at core" propaganda)
speaking of: ~Cat Blanc trauma~ died with "Jubilation" and this is the funeral
So much lore being made up just to justify the plot beats of this special, gotta love it
Excuse me, I got brainworms from emoverse ladynoir being physically marked by the damaged caused by their misuse of their miraculous and the way this never is compared to Gabriel's shiny new handprint
Or at least named as the reason why they're so desperate and bitter, rather than the diet coke explanation we got
I can't believe what a bitter old crone I've become to roll my eyes when Ladybug has a moment of shoddily set up "oh no I can't do it" so that Cat Noir can put a hand on his shoulder and look her in the eye and say "I always believe in you, milady". To be fair I think this would've touched me if it hadn't been like a year and half since "Strike Back" aired
On the bright side, this one episode does Alya more justice than all the rest of S5 did
did emoverse!Chloé have Sabine deported?
I can't believe Claw Noir didn't at least get rid of the mullet
I can't believe that trailer showed us all we were getting of emoverse Alya and Nino. ROBBED.
The emotional aftermath of "Destruction" really was ADRIEN: Plagg, I think I killed a man and that makes me uncomfortable PLAGG: Okay, but please consider: cheese
Why, IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, was this scene of Gabriel almost going into Adrien's room after the cataclysm not in the show proper
Adrien was so excited to talk about Nino's favourite film. It is now canon that Adrien is that person who genuinely enjoys avant-garde cinema
Best part: emoverse ladynoir teaming up with Hawkmoth to form a visual kei Team Rocket, complete with sarcastic nicknames
Monarch, sorry (something something you're giving into his power by acknowledging his self-proclaimed change in name), but I dig that they kept up the continuity of the fashion disaster he was for these early S5 episodes
Worst part: Superfluous multiverse jumping fanservice. If you needed to pad for time, it should've been spent on emoverse ladynoir flashbacks
I can't wait for the S6 reveal that Chloé personally caused the climate crisis, founded daesh and killed Mother Teresa

Why Isn't Oliver A Girl? A Saltburn Analysis
shoutout to @aquickstart for this brilliant question that led to me writing this in my notes app at 7 in the morning and simply does not deserve to be relegated to DMs. hope you all enjoy our brainrot!
~~~~
i think it depends on this. which aspect of olivers desire for felix is most offensive to modern normie sensibilities? the homosexual one, or the selfcestuous one? i...say its the former. i think its seen as normal to want, if not allowed to actually achieve, (particularly given british bloodline classism), for a white man to want to be a different, more powerful white man. to want to ascend his social position for power.
but if oliver was a woman, it would be the inverse. her romantic desire would be seen as normal, (if still unsettling, because of its sexually predatory nature. because people are not used to thinking of women as interested in or capable of sexual violence, much less seeing it onscreen.) but her desire to BE him would be the uncomfortable part, bc women are not supoosed to want power in a man way, theyre supposed to want it in a woman way. theyre supposed to work within the system as a damsel to white men. white women, particularly those who are not opporessed in any other way, are the First Lady to white supremacy. they are not supposed to want to fully replace men at the top of the food chain, they are supposed to utilize their position as subordinate to further their entitlement to second in command status; because being subordinant grants them the plausible deniability of victimhood. just as felixs appearance of ultimate generosity absolves him of guilt for his privilege, so does white womens appearance of ultimate victimhood absolve them of theirs.
except....thats actually common. look at terfs. look at White Feminism and how it seeks to merely replace men rather than dismantle the system entirely. so while on some level it would still be upsetting to cis men to see a story that seemingly openly condones misandrist social climb, i think they would dismiss it as simply reverse sexism. and people would misinterpret it as that, as being a poor attempt at feminism that accidentally shows its ass by glorfiying girlboss feminism.
but. thats the (unreliable) narrative girloliver tells us.
because girl olivers desire for felix would not be one of heterosexual romantic interest. it would be one of cannibalistic gender envy. girl oliver could not exist, because she would be a trans man.
and THAT. would make people WAY too uncomfortable. it would put way too much scrutiny on the very few trans men in the public eye. it would not be safe. the reason we are able to take saltburn in good faith, is because the narrative of gay male desire as predatory is no longer the only depiction of it. i think it would break peoples minds seeing transmaculinity as predatory rather than transfemininity, and not in a good way. i dont think cis men would even conciously pick up on it, much less feel threatened by it. i think theyd be far more uncomfortable with the idea of women, cis women, being sexually predatory.
but cis women in the audiences would lose their shit. because they see transmasculinity not as predatory, but as cowardly. as a betrayal of sisterhood, a joining of the enemy and a defecting of that mutual suffering under patriarchy that white cis women cling to because it grants them that immunity when they enact their own bigotry. because womanhood is something you are supoosed to love and hate in equal measure. so to want to denounce it, to be dysphoric and find more joy in being masculine, is offensive because it bursts that bubble, it shows this narrative of universal sisterhood for the cult that it is. wanting to leave means you are excommunicated. just as a trans woman wanting to be accepted into that sisterhood, bursts the bubble because it acknowledges that theres more to womanhood than hating it.
but....heres the thing. this is what would make girliver (heh) saltburn brilliant. it would force people to reconsile with the fact that out of the two. out of transmasculinity, and girlboss feminism. one of them is much more uncomfortable to us, much more of a threat to patriarchy rather than a contribution to it. and its not the one we pretend it is. desoite the supposed accepted narrative that misandrist social climb is the most hated thing...its actually a fundamental part of how white patriatchy functions. the REAL thing people consider transgressive, is the notion that you would want to be a man not for power but for the joy of it. to separate maleness from power. because you are not allowed to feel that. either as a trans or even it seems to me a cis man.
one of my first thoughts when i went to answer this was that... canon oliver and felix as metaphors speak of...white male emptiness. of the way consumerism, both in the capitalistic material gain sense, and in the primal cannibalistic sexual consumptiom and discarding of your conquests - is the only avenue through which men are allowed to signal a personality. they do not get to experience true self love outside of who they  provide for or who serves them. self love and appreication of ones own beauty outside of sexual usefulness are considered feminine. so is appreciation of beauty as a whole outside of sexual appeal. it is considered gay (in feminine therefore transgressive therefore infectious and predatory way) to appreciate a nuce fruity drink. or a sunset. or to put effort into ones own appearance, outside of the exclusive purposes of either getting pussy, or living up to the male power fantasy. to love masculinity for masculinities sake. not in a romantic way but in a self love way, is a deeply transgressive act. that NO ONE talks about. but it is everywhere. so for girl oliver to ugly cry while flicking the bean like its an actual dick on top of a grave, only to retroactively claim her obsession with felix was just a good for her girlboss narrative...that would rip the common narrative like a wet paper bag.
it would also totally reframe the sex scenes with venetia and farleigh. with venetia it would be a case of...on the one hand the taboo of predatory lesbianism. but on the other, the girlbossification of..... katy perry style straight women sexual experimentation. particularly with transmascs, bc it gives them the plausible deniability that its not actually gay. so thered be a lot of debate there who is really taking advantage of who there. especially because nonpenetrative particularly lesbian sex isnt seen as real sex therefore its not seen as a form of assault. and with farleigh itd be a case of girlbossifying sexual conquest over men. pegging. tho i doubt girl oliver would pack a strap. maybe shed finger him idfk. but itd definitely be some sort of like, sexual dominance as empowering until you think about the racial dynamic and realize its actually buckbreaking.
so ultimately i think it would be BRILLIANT. but it would also be a fundamentally different story, which people simply are not ready to hear. idk enough about emerald fennell to judge whether or not she would be able to even think of this, let alone portray it faithfully, given she is a white wealthy cis woma, but especially after barbie, i am IFFY about white wealthy cis womens attempts at feminism. particularly when it comes to gender transgression and portrayal of transmasculinity of any kind. fucking sasha in barbie is the only one who dislikes hot pink feminism, shes not even a proper tomboy, and shes effectively forcefemmed
What do you love and hate most about miraculous?
The hate is simple, the direction of the script, a lot of potential thrown away, to simply, the class that has people who have barely received a makeover or who have barely had any screen time to develop their personalities, deserve to be given a miraculous PERMANENTLY, so that it's easier to raise suspicions, Ivan arriving at school with a piercing and Kim (a huge unknown in the script, because, okay, before season 5 he was kind of cool, but after Derision, how does he still get a miraculous?) arriving with a tiara? What's the need? They could very well have them be permanent holders, but one at a time, to have their development, like: I see almost no reason for Kim to receive a miraculous after that episode, as well as other characters, and it would be a great way to develop those less explored in PENALTEAM (I completly hate) and then those who had a good amount of screen time.
Another thing, little diversity, even if only minimally, they could have explored clothing, hair, skin tones better, but I don't have much to complain about, apart from that, because otherwise it would have been a longer text.
About loving, apart from the fact that it's poorly explored, the appearance of some characters, Lila, although I should hate her, she ends up being my favorite character, like: she has personality and she has looks, all that was missing was a miraculous and now she has it, and if she doesn't win (considering that the intelligence of the characters is worse than a stone) I'll give up on the series.
I think maybe the idea of the characters? It's really hard to find something that I totally love, because I love a lot of things, but I judge the choice of script.
They manage to turn any likeable character into a hated one just by mismanaging the script (Chloe, Kagami, Kim), and victimize characters who try/would/do genocide (Gabriel, Felix), like: I was stunned to see that in the end Gabriel was considered a hero, which okay, it was a story so they wouldn't find out he was Mornach, but people… They destroyed the statue of the heroes to put up Gabriel's, simply because he "helped" Ladybug? Just once he helps and he already has a statue, and it took "a long time" for them to get their statues. To make matters worse, all this happened in 9 months? another thing I hate, the timeline that barely makes sense.
