Word Count: 522

Thorin woke before Bilbo, as she often did. They were curled in on one another under layers of heavy blankets, hoping to stave off the growing cold of the mountain. Winter had befallen the mountain as quick as a blink, halting all sense of normalcy. Postponed were council meetings, cancelled were diplomatic host duties, and travel plans were now as distant in the future as the first melt of Spring. As she lay there, she absently wondered at the work that would build up over the season. Surely there would be much to do with little time to do it, and soon, the Queen's time would be kept away from the only one who deserved it.

Bilbo shifted in her arms then, sighing a soft sound of discontent; her cold nose burying itself into the burning skin of the dwarf's chest. Thorin had to hold back a sleepy chuckle at the motion. Her love was ever so greedy when it came to warmth; such a Hobbitish desire it was. Of course, she remedied this quickly, weaving a sure hand through the short honey curls she adored so, cradling the smaller woman all the closer. Lazily, she smiled at the instant hum of validation for the action. Hobbits, she had also come to know, were rather predictable.

"Too cold... Th...orin..." Bilbo's muffled whine drifted through the air, half awake. "Blasted... mountain..."

"I know, amrâlimê," Thorin whispered back, sleep deepening her voice. She pressed a quick kiss to the small patch of mussed hair peaking out of their sheets. "The fire's gone out. I'll fix it when it is properly morning. Sleep now."

"You sleep as well... Dream—" A violent yawn interrupted the hobbit's mumbled message. "Dream with me..."

"Yes, yes."

Bilbo turned silent for a moment then, and Thorin wondered how sleep could return so easily to close her eyes and soothe her mind. It almost made her jealous. A restful night, of which she'd grown to appreciate, came with soft touches and gentle reassurances, and the hum of simpler tunes, echoing over the rocks and stones of their shared confines.

"Thorin?" Came the quiet voice once more.

"Yes?"

"When will Spring come again?"

"Soon, my love. Just sleep and it will arrive."

Despite the blankets, and the warmth of another in the bed, the hobbit shivered, and mental notes to source more layers were made. A secret, perhaps, that this simple problem was the greatest one Thorin bore. If pressed, she'd lie and claim Summer her favourite, with the sun kissing peachy skin, freckling faces, and revealing generous curves in the sticky heat. In actuality, it was the dread of night and the bite of cold that was most alluring. In the pillow fort of their wedding bed, Thorin could fall in love a hundred times over. It happened easy, and as natural as the tangle their bodies made.

Thorin paid no mind as the stone bore the brunt of winters worst outside. Instead, she listened to the consort of Erebor sleeping soundly in her arms; her soft, gentle snores a lullaby threatening to close the Queen's half-lidded eyes once more.

Day 8: Callous

This AU draws heavily from the EXTREMELY inspiring work of @rutobuka2 (specifically, lumberjack!Thorin and Thorin's design in the Barricade AU (link to NSFW comic))

*i am publishing this in its current and incomplete form because i'm not going to finish it!*

Dis had said, This one is a Kindergarten teacher because I'm running out of friends.

Thorin had said, I wish you would run out faster, but she'd gone on the date anyway. Her sister had gotten married two summers before, and was now bound and determined to find someone for Thorin. Usually, they were people Dis barely knew, from her jewelry work or Vili's gym. On one truly unspeakable occasion, Thorin had gone out with someone Dis described to her as "unfortunately tall," and who turned out to be a wood elf. But they were not all bad. The last time Dis set her up, Dori had become a trusted friend (if not anything more). At the end of the day, she was willing to give some Kindergarten teacher at least one date, if only so Dis would back off for a few more weeks.

But her sister was right: Kindergarten was not her type. As she readied herself for the evening, she was imagining her date as a paint-spattered, bubbly blonde. In her imagination, she could see her talk to the waiter like they were best friends and eventually tell Thorin her entire life story. She'd have no boundaries and no real difficulty in her life.

Thorin sighed. She was being unfair, but she already didn't think they'd have anything in common. Thorin's own job was grueling, demanding, and isolating. She wasn't the kind of person who could sit down with someone and get cozy over appetizers-- the idea made her frown in discomfort. She needed something steady and lasting, rooted in the earth like the trees in her woods.

She pulled on her flannel and snapped the buttons all the way to her neck. At least she wouldn't have to talk about herself, if the teacher did decide to share her life story.

When she arrived at the restaurant at 6:30, Thorin parked her truck and headed straight to her preferred booth. The spotty teenager at the host stand had been working the last couple times she'd been here and gave her a smile. She kept her face to the ground, scowling.

Her seat was in the back, close to the kitchen and a little noisy. She had a great view of the front windows, where she could see anybody pulling up. When Dis had made the mistake of setting her up with the elf, Thorin had been able to slip away when she saw the creature crawl out of her car in the parking lot. Even having narrowly escaped what would have been the worst date of her life, she'd spent the rest of the evening thinking up insults for her sister.

Now, Thorin watched the parking lot idly and turned the table knife over in her hands. It was sturdy quality, if not very sharp. The wood of the handle was a little rotten from being soaked, but the metal was good. She heard a woman's voice from a table in front of her.

"Sorry, but could I get a refill? I'm afraid I'm still waiting." The waitress scurried off and Thorin saw the Hobbit woman sigh and shift in her seat. She felt a stab of sympathy and sipped at her own water. It seemed they were both stuck in date-limbo.

The Hobbit was cute, with mops of auburn curls on the top of her head and just below her ankles. She wore a deep burgundy dress and looked to be doing a crossword puzzle at the table. Thorin watched her in profile, forgetting about the cars in the parking lot.

[Bilbo, Kindy teacher, goes on a first and second date with Thorin, park ranger. She's half in love already and Thorin is on the exact same page. Actually, Thorin is fully in love by the second date and wants to start looking for rings so she never has to give her up. But that's not really something she's about to say.

Thorin takes her home in the car she borrowed from Dis and before Bilbo gets out, Thorin grabs her hand and pulls her so they're facing each other. She slowly brings their faces together, a hand on either side of Bilbo's bare neck. After a perfect first kiss, Thorin dives in for another and another, stopping when she hears Bilbo suddenly gasp. She keeps stroking her thumbs under her jaw as she leans back a little.

Bilbo is near speechless at the feeling of Thorin's calloused fingers dragging over the soft skin of her neck and jaw. She takes Thorin's mouth again a little roughly and bites at her lip, before recalling herself and pulling away. It's almost 11 on a weeknight (WHY did she agree to go out on a Monday again???) so, it's time for sensible teachers to go to sleep. Thorin asks what time school gets out and if she can pick her up for dinner. Again. The next day. She teaches half days so she gets out at 1:30. Thorin says they can have lunch, too.]

As a bagginshield shipper, overall lover of Thorin, and member of an orchestra for like half of my life, I am in absolute love with your philharmonic AU. The only way it could be better is if it happened to me in real life (still gay of course, but like, in the other direction)

Ahhh thank you thank you! I’m really hoping to incorporate more actual instrument content, since we really only see Bilbo’s dulcimer once in An Unexpected Comic!

My partner and I spent about 8 years together in orchestra classes, and I’m still actively in an orchestra today, so I’m all for fruity orchestra love stories! I hope you’re able to experience a meet-cute in real life of equal silliness and shenanigans.

I love and adore rule 63 fic, especially when it makes a m/m pairing into f/f. there's never enough femslash, so there's nothing wrong with making your own, right? my pet peeve however is when people change their name to "feminize" them instead of keeping their original names. you can just leave it! have them be nicknames instead! it just takes me the fuck out of it when people create new/bizarre names just to make them "fit" for the girl character (and usually it doesn't work at all).

for example (based on characters I've done r63 for, past and present): you can still call them Ian and Mickey, just make Ian short for Lillian and Mickey can be a nickname for Mykhaila (Ukrainian female version of Mikhailo). I did the same thing with Steve and Bucky r63—make Steve short for Stephanie but she'd be a tomboy and go by Steve, and have Bucky's first name be Jane instead of James. (they can still have their middle names be Grant and Buchanan—my great-grandma was born in 1899, and she got her middle name from a state governor who was assassinated the year she was born, and that was what people called her. so historically it would still make sense for Steve and Bucky, even as girls.) Dean Winchester? Deanna, but she goes by Dean because she likes it better. Thorin and Bilbo? Khuzdul and Westron are different languages anyway, so feminine/masculine are completely different for them as opposed to English.

anyway, just make their canon names be a nickname they go by and make it easier on everyone, don't try to be weird and gender binary essentialist about it. /steps off soapbox/

Bella Baggins never quite fit in the Shire. Perhaps she was made for the mountains, instead.

This story is so sweet.  The way the dwarves care for Bella just hits you in the found family feels in the best way!  Also I love a podfic.  It lets me knit and listen to a fic.

The Seedling by Chrononautical (Tumblr)

In the course of her adventures, Bilbo finds herself pregnant. Without an offer of marriage from Thorin, she returns to the Shire to raise the child with the help of her family.

The King Under the Mountain is heartbroken that Bilbo chooses to leave Erebor, but he cannot blame her. Not after he tried to kill her. There was a time when she would have proposed marriage, but that time is clearly past. If all he can have of her are her letters, then he will be grateful for the missives.

Getting these two to talk just might take divine intervention. Or the intervention of a particularly interested child.

I absolutely love this story (and also everything written by this author in later ficrecs you will see them again).  I cannot stop re-reading it.   It once again has the unplanned pregnancy trop, which is one of my favourites.  Also the way the issue of virtue and cultural misunderstandings works is just *insert meme of Pacha from The Emperor’s New Groove.*

I think this might have been my first Fem!Bilbo fic I read.  And then I was hooked!

a risky idea that I wrote down and would like to share :)

POV: Smaug, a centuries-old being, can shapeshift. You are fem!Bilbo sneaking quietly through Erebor’s treasure hoard as The Company’s unwitting burglar. Smaug appears to you as a vibrant elfin femme, voluptuous and long… draped like sinew along the cursed gold. She is preoccupied and does not know you are there.

Also, fem!Thorin, with whom you are smitten, is on your mind.

The Hobbit AU | Fem! Thorin | Crack fic taken seriously | Rated T (for now)

As soon as the opportunity arose to serve as ambassador for the trade dealings, Thorin seized it. She knew that this could be her last chance to leave the Lonely Mountain for a while, as she was next in line for the throne. Her grandfather was old and sickly, and the weight of responsibility would soon fall on her shoulders. The truth is, Thorin has never wanted to rule alone. In her heart, she knows she has a One whom she has yet to find. And she’d been hoping to encounter them on this journey. There is still the journey back, she supposes, but there would be no new stops along the way. Maybe she’d find them along the road.

Speaking of the road…

She can't shake off the feeling that someone is watching her, and it makes her uneasy. She scans the area but sees no one. She begins to wonder if it's just her imagination or if someone is really keeping an eye on her. Her hand moves to her belt, where her sword rests, a familiar weight that gives her a sense of security. She tries to push the feeling aside, but it persists, making her edgy and tense. She resolves to keep her guard up and be alert for any danger that might come her way.

Then her hand drops down to her side, and she laughs. What kind of danger could possibly lurk in the Shire of all places? An errant child with a penchant for mischief? Ha–

Another feeling of eyes boring into her makes Thorin whirl around and she thinks she catches a blur of light-colored curls. She makes the connection. Maybe it is not an errant fauntling after all, but an irritating pest by the name of Bilbo Baggins. Oh, he had nerve. She could give him that, but she was going to wring his little neck if he so much as dared to be caught within arm's reach. But there is no hide or hair of him now, so Thorin pushes the Hobbit from her thoughts and readies herself for meeting with the Thain.

Thorin had been exceptionally dour since their arrival in Rivendell and it was starting to get on her nerves, though she hadn’t meant to stare at the dwarrowdam quite so intently. “No,” she muttered, then paused. “You don’t like being here, do you?”
