Women are still missing in the music industry. It’s even worse when it comes to female producers.
We already told you about the number of women writing, performing, and producing hit songs dropping low in 2020. According to the University of Southern California’s Annenberg Institute, the rate of female producers has…
ALEXA MAHMOUDI, drummer for @comfyinn's Kenickie's band.
Music Lover, Party Animal
Cis Female, She/Her, Pansexual
Deaf since birth, but has a sense of sound through cochlear implants (I know they look more like regular hearing aids but I couldn't find an accurate-looking cochlear implant that was compatible with earrings 😭 So I'm just pretending that the devices are partially covered by her hair since it likely would have clipped underneath her hair anyway)
Meet Alexa, or just "Lex" if you're a friend. Growing up, she was the deaf kid. Even though she has a sense of sound through her implants, everybody spoke loudly to her anyway, even though that's kinda what her implants are for. But so what if she's deaf? To combat the fact that she's different and can't naturally hear with just her ears, Alexa grew up to be one noisy chick. Her favorite past times are screaming at the top of her lungs at parties and of course, her instrumental expertise: the drums!
She prefers the drums because she has an easier time with consistent sounds (i.e the beat and the repetitive pattern). Plus the drums are loud enough that she can feel the vibrations through the floor, which enhances her experience. She likes to be the beatmaker; or "the skeleton of the song," as she'd say.
Alexa was born with a genetic mutation that caused her to be born deaf. She's been wearing implants since she was a baby, however, so she can communicate through speech normally, but she does know some sign language through her involvement in the deaf community, which her parents have exposed her to for her entire life.
Some more facts:
Black, purple, and pink is her go-to color combination. She's very happy that her hair is naturally black because it's her preferred hair color and would have dyed it black if she had a different hair color
She dislikes swimming because she would have to take her implants out. Being in deep water without hearing is a little scary for her, so on beach days she prefers to simply soak up the sun or stay in shallow waters
She has to take her implants out to sleep, so alarm clocks don't work for her. She has one of those flashing/moving beds instead. If she's away from home, she prefers to sleep in or have somebody wake her up. But on the plus side she has no trouble falling asleep in noisy environments!
Because the vibrations of the music enhance her playing experience, she likes to take her shoes off when she's playing so she can better feel the vibrations of her drums and
She's of Iranian descent, in case you were wondering
She's, fittingly, a big fan of rhythm games like Osu!, Beatsaber, A Dance of Fire and Ice, Taiko no Tatsujin... let's just say she loves them all. Oh, and spoiler: she's really good at them.
Private download if chosen
(even if she's not chosen I'll prob use her for something down the road because I love her A LOT)
In the first edition of our interview series, we have hookage, a music producer/beatmaker born and raised in Francistown and Gaborone. He produces a wide variety of genres. The producer says his exposure to different genres( hip-hop, rap, neo-soul, rnb, deep house, etc.) and cultures nurtured his ability to produce different genres.
He has produced for a variety of artists and musicians locally and internationally, but notably, he’s produced for Kaysotheenigma's “Cherry Bomb,” which won 'Best Female Single' at the YAMAs, as well as three songs off her debut album “Fifth Heaven."
How did you come up with the name Hookage?
So i got the name from the anime series, Naruto but i added a twist to it. In the series, the original word is “hokage” and this is the title given to the leader of the specific village . So i added an extra “o” to honestly avoid copyright infringement issues but the meaning behind the name stands because i view my music and audience as my “village” and it’s my responsibility to take care of them.
How did you get into music production?
It started off as me playing music production games on my tablets as a child around the ages from 9 to 13 because i had always had this deep-rooted interest and passion for music but never really knew how to get into making my own stuff. So in grade 8/form 1, i met someone who taught me how to use Fl Studio and so i started making beats in 2017
We really like your ability to blend different genres into one track, who or what would you say has influenced your style of production?
Honestly, it’s an amalgamation of different producers and artists as i take different things from the individually. For example, i love the way Pharell Williams approaches his beats and certain chord progressions, where with The Alchemist, his ability to chop up samples the way he does or even just finding the samples he does is amazing then artists like Smino or JID, who manipulate their voices to sound a certain way whilst also using their voice as percussive instruments is also insane.
One of our favourite tracks by you is Need U, what's the story behind the track, who's on the vocals?
With that song, the whole thing is honestly a different song that didn’t have any drums on it but just vocals, keys and bass. i can’t even remember the original name of the song but i separated the song into those different layers and added drums of my own. I initially wanted to keep it for myself but i knew i had to at least post it
You've worked with numerous artists across different genres, out of all these collaborations which one would you say is your favourite?
I don’t think i can put a finger on my favorite because we all work together but if i had to choose right now, it would have to be spacerover and lucas chubbs
Which artist would you like to work with that you haven't yet?
There are so many artists i really want to work with atm but for now it would have to be K.alahari without a doubt
Before you performed your set for Backyard Stories, they revealed that you learned how to dj with vinyls from your dad, how was the whole process?
So it’s an interesting story because my dad and his brothers are all former Djs but had their own preferred genres hence why i have the variety of genres between house, hiphop, rnb etc. It was mainly my dad teaching me but the whole process of actually using vinyl was hard but i caught on quickly because i never used digital djing software so i had nothing to reference.
So Botswana was recently introduced to the music collective 'Ascension Pleas' and how it came about but, we'd like to hear from your perspective about how you met the others, your music production process and how being part of the group benefits you as hookage?
So as we explain prior, it really was just coincidence because we didn’t really even have a motive to be at UB apart from rehearsals for Pablo%8’s show that week and we then just decided to work on something. In terms of meeting them, i had already known banzai the longest as we already been working since 2021 but i met Lucas Chubbs and spacerover last year, same with briann bc but that we met at UB was the first time me and BC (briann BC) made music together. For the time being, i usually just give them old beats i didn’t have use for but recently we’ve been working hard with the new beats i’ve been making. I usually make a beat then send it to them to see if they feel it then the decision is made whether to use it or not. Me being apart of the group let’s their audiences become aware of who i am and possibly follow me in my journey and on the other hand, it let’s me share my love for music with like minded people who i can consider my friends and that deep love for music is something you can’t share with anyone
A lot of new generation artists and creative platforms have been emerging in Botswana, which one would you say has stood out the most?
I would firstly say you guys because i’ve seen you guys grow so rapidly but it’s because of your authenticity. Other artists that have really caught my eye are borus, chrysus, emo, mantra, magadi. there are so many more but they’re just a few to name
Favourite producer from Botswana?
it would have to be Simba the Indigo, one of the members of K.alahari
Out of all the songs you produced, which one stands out the most to you?
It would have to be some unreleased, song name titled “Honesty” which will feature on my debut album. It might be my best produced song at the moment
What's next for you, Hookage?
I’ve been quietly working on my debut album which is set to drop next year. This album is what I’ve been working on apart from working with other artists, just slowly piecing it together and it’s going to be a great start for me to establish not only as a music producer but an overall musician.
Sadiva is a rising talent in the Australian music scene and solidifying her reputation as a global beatmaker. Sadiva has established herself as one of Melbourne’s integral players in the sampling/beat scene. Her decision to pour her emotions into each beat led to a unique and unconventional sound that diverged from her typical beats.
A promising young producer with a unique sound and a commitment to using her platform for good. She founded Women of the World (WOW), the first-ever all-women's beat tape, to address the lack of representation for female beatmakers. The mixtapes raising funds for Share the Dignity Australia, a non-profit that supports homeless women and victims of domestic violence.

Tell us about your story and how you got to where you are?
I'm from Los Angeles born and raised. I grew up in South Central with immigrant parents so I have always related to humble beginnings. After I graduated high school, I moved to Atlanta for a year and learned the value of independence. I moved back to LA & dated a beatmaker and he is one of my first museical inspirations. Unfortunately he passed away in front of me and it changed my life forever. My young adulthood I found myself thrust right into the Belly of the beast in Los Angeles.
My music is a testament to how I view the world and how I grow into the Rose in a concrete jungle.
What has been your biggest obstacle in your journey as an artist?
My biggest journey has been learning to balance criticism. As an artist, you grow by considering how you can do better next time. ABCD Always Be Creating & Doing better. A lot of times the hardest criticsm comes from within. You have to be able to alchemize judgement into growth. Often times our ego shuts out criticism in order to protect us but being an artist means overcoming this instinct so that the soul can evolve.
On the other hand, being an artist also means that you walk your own path. What may look like a mis-stroke to an outsider is a purposeful mark by the Artist. Artists have to be able to think outside of the box and make moves that nobody else would + accept any controversy that comes with it.
What lessons have you learned?
I have learned to Stick to the Script. Many times the best move is the one we almost didn't make. If you have a Plan, whether it's written down or all vision, stick to it. Don't fold under pressure. Keep it cool, keep it player, and hold it down. This requires trusting yourself and your intuition.
Stay ready so you don't have to get ready.
Tell us about your music, how would you describe your sound?
My music is West Coast hip hop. I would describe my sound as a seductive Outerspace vibe you can sit back and smoke to. My music is my player take on living life in LA.
What other artists would you compare yourself to?
I get compared to Larry June the most and I have to agree!!! My goal is really to encapsulate that West Coast player vibe. I would also compare myself to Dom Kennedy and Curren$y. I would compare myself to Saweetie as well, when I'm really talking my sh--.
If you could work with any artists, who would you choose?
First I would record a song with Nicki Minaj because she is the Queen of Rap! She deserves more respect from upcoming female rappers. Dead or alive, I would choose Drakeo the Ruler because I always wanted to work with him. He's a West coast legend and his story is powerful, for good or for bad.
What sets you apart from other artists?
What sets me apart from other female rappers is that I like to tease my audience with wordplay and get my story across in a more seductive manner. I like to utilize double entendres and metaphors to give more meaning. I can simulate erotic imagery and magic without ever using certain words!
What sets me apart from other artists is that I strive to create RHYTHYM AND POETRY. My tone of voice is also unique because I really want to give that laid-back California vibe.
I'm really here to tell a story that makes the audience wonder - not make the most turnt up RAH rah bop for the club.
What should we know about your work?
You should know that I am inspired by the best & that anything with the name Slim Rose on it is my authentic best. That's all that matters.
What are your plans for the future?
My plan for the near future is to drop more singles that really communicate siren Energy and California charisma. I will also be filming music videos inspired by my vision. In the future I would love to do more features on other people's songs. I would love to be an artist like Nicki where you rap on another artist's record but take over and the audience is really just waiting for her verse. I am also planning to record and release an EP called Heaven on Earth.
What motivates you, or keeps you going?
My legacy motivates me..I see Art as a legacy and a time capsule. 100 years from now, if someone listens to my music, they will experience what it was like to live in LA as a Siren, as a woman, as a person, as a Soul - as a Lost Angel.
Tell us something that might surprise people about you.
Something that might surprise people about me is that I am led by God. Moved by free will.
How do you define success?
I define success as freedom. We spend so much of our lives trapped in invisible cages, trapped in the Matrix, enslaved by our minds and spirits of lack. A billionaire can appear successful but really be a slave to their lifestyle. An impoverished person may appear downtrodden but actually have free domain over his time. The goal is to land somewhere in the middle of the spectrum and exercise freedom over your time and resources.
Tell us about any projects or music you have coming out.
I have two singles on the way. One of my future singles is inspired by Hollywood and the lust of limelight and stardom. Another single is about how enjoyable life is and the beauty & joy of getting lost & found in the Moment.
What do you want people to know about you? Anything else you want mentioned?
Stream Sipping Champagne by Slim Rose.

“Bata,” released as a single, 2022
Music credit: Dulat Mukhametkaliev (ZaQ), Azamat Ashmakyn (Ace) (with Olzhas Nurgaliev credited as “beatmaker”)
Lyrics credit: Dulat Mukhametkaliev (ZaQ), Daniyar Kulumshin (Bala)
Music video director: Madi Zhagi
So: that particular combination on the music credit is new. Although if you’d asked me to pick the two members of OT4 Ninety One most likely to be inspired by Future, or at the very least by Desiigner, I would not have picked Ace and ZaQ. (Guys: y’all got broads in Atlanta! Well, at least one broad.)
(While I’m rambling on the music credit: the official credits on this one--thank you, Newly Independent Ninety One, for being thorough on the credits--includes “Mastering: Diana Gorovaya,” which is the first time we’ve seen a woman involved in Ninety One song production. We also have assistant director Nurila Shakirova, and veterans Assiya Nestay [choreography], Zhadra Abdulzhapparova [makeup and hair] and Asselya Rysbayeva [styling]. And also we have a female dancer alongside the male dancers in Bala’s scene, coed backup dance groups being very rare in idol pop. All of this is to say that in terms of evidence of Ninety One paying attention to female thinkers, “Bata” may be the most striking music video so far.)
Honestly, what with everyone swanning around in suits and Alem staring down the camera, “Bata” looks like an updated take on “Men Emes.” (The comparison doesn’t entirely work to the benefit of the newer song: in particular, Bala’s rap--he’s trying, and assuming he wrote his own verse he’s definitely learned a lot from ZaQ’s ability to twist multiple ideas around the same vowel sound, but his delivery just isn’t varied enough to banish the thought of what AZ would have done with the same lines.) “Bata” is also more than a minute shorter: more compressed and more intense. I haven’t seen an English translation yet, but Google Translate, having looked at both the Kazakh and Russian lyrics, says Alem’s refrain is, “Be your own boss, brother!” Less the theme of Ninety One’s own awesomeness in the face of adversity, which powered “Men Emes” and “Ah! Yah! Mah!” before it, and more a general rallying cry.
To me this feels like an overture, a raising of the curtain: not just for this album, whatever shape it ends up taking (and whenever it comes out), but for the new Ninety One. I mean: Alem told The Steppe magazine, “We have an LLP, we are like a board of directors.” Of course they’re going to want “be your own boss” to come off as commanding and glamorous as possible. The weakness of “Bata” is that, as prelude-y as it feels, it doesn’t seem like a strong single. I suspect I’ll enjoy it more in the album context.
How’s the Hair/Styling? I’m not in love with Alem’s tiny bangs or Bala’s sudden purple turn, but overall this is some solid work on Asselya’s part. She deserves extra credit for making Ace look good despite his being back to the too-long / too-often-dyed / starting-to-frizz hair default.
Should You Start Here? No; it’s a good showing from OT4 but I’m not sure it beats “Men Emes” at its own game.
