Mo Dao Zu Shi and Self-Yearning For Reconciliation
There is an overarching lesson within the writing of MXTX that forgiveness and moving on doesn't entail non-verbal consent for a relationship to be salvaged once more or reclaimed as it used to be.
Within SVSSS, we are given the character of Yue Qingyuan desperately seeking the friendship and brotherhood he had with Shen Jiu. Only for that relationship to be provided by another way of Shen Yuan who finalizes he is not the man Yue Qingyuan needed closure from, but is the only one able to give it for the man to find peace with his own choices.
To a lesser extent this is also shown with the relationship between Xie Lian, Mu Qing and Feng Xin at the end of TGCF. This time though, despite Xie Lian associating with them with no ill will, he does not let either man make choices for him and resoundingly makes his own boundaries aware within the reclamation of their friendship.
MDZS does not offer this reclamation of a friendship or the start of one previously lost with another. Unlike the previous two who did yearn for friendship what was between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian had been a stipulation of burden and assumption that started with Jiang Fengmian. Jiang Cheng was to see Wei Wuxian as a servant made friend when brought in, and Wei Wuxian was protector over friend. There was already a set imbalance due to neither naturally being able to choose the roles within their lives for the other and extending parties stating who and what they were to each other.
Jiang Cheng in his already tenuous esteem with himself and resentment of being told he was already viewed as less from his mother, took Wei Wuxian's existence in his life as a displacement of his own claims within life. His sacrifice of his dogs was the precursor for the beginning of their relationship on the allusion of debts between them.
Jiang Cheng gives up the loyalty of a literal pet, for the loyalty of an eventual man. In other words, I will shelter and protect you in exchange. Jiang Cheng does keep to this as children, with the expense of mocking Wei Wuxian's fears as he is want. His stipulations for this begun to escalate over the years and as such the giving of shelter and safety cannot be made up for Jiang Cheng, forever loyalty is now not enough, but why must Wei Wuxian also be adept at cultivation, why is he to be praised for his deeds more so, why must Wei Wuxian be a bright mind of the war.
If he is to be that, it at least would be overshadowed that he is still only under Jiang Cheng's rule. Otherwise every other action against this, is to demean Jiang Cheng, to oppose him, to cause trouble with ingratitude. It is also why, despite Wen Qing and Wen Ning having sheltered him and Wei Wuxian as well as collected his parents and provided their ashes, Jiang Cheng is able to disregard his obligation to help them. If not for Wei Wuxian's supposed insubordination, Jiang Cheng would not have suffered his own losses. Even when he did protect Wei Wuxian, the loss of it was too much, as with the dogs he had given up as a child, he did not get an active said promise of more dedication made up tenfold for the minimum kindness exhibited by Jiang Cheng. As said by Fang Mengcheng, "Atonement? You cannot actually be feeling grateful to him!”
To want to be good and to protect others, must come with selfish want for exemption of guilt for the harm you have caused. Wen Ning and Wen Qing owed it to Jiang Cheng for the deaths of his parents for carrying the surname of Wen, as such he did not need to repay them. Wei Wuxian sat at the table of the Jiangs and was given a living others would envy, as such he owed his life to Jiang Cheng. Wei Wuxian taking on the burden of protecter of another, was a betrayal of all that Jiang Cheng's lineage had gave him. To do the impossible because it is right, is not worth the self emulation and ridicule of the many. And while he may resent that kindness in Wei Wuxian, for it to be given to others as well, is a lack of loyalty of the ideals of Jiang Cheng. Jiang Cheng's growing resentment of Wei Wuxian's choice of kindness over safety, is a a mirrored resentment that Jiang Cheng holds within himself and his lack of respect for his own Clan ideals. A servant under the lord of the house embodies what Jiang Cheng was born to be.
As he throws abuse upon Wei Wuxian at their penultimate clash, while he does say sorry, he is still unable to view it without the veil of debt owed between each other. As Wei Wuxian could not tell him he gave him his core out of pity for his ego to keep him from shattering, Jiang Cheng could not say he protected Wei Wuxian out of a moment of kindness without care for the consequences until it expounded as his reality.
There is a self soothing mechanism, that opening up to truths will eventually mean a mending of what had been, or the beginning of something better. Yet this is only true when both are open to stand together as equals. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng began with obligation and ended with obligation. The obligation to give for doing, the obligation of sorry for redemption. The obligation of servitude for sacrifice.
To rebuild and start again is meant to be the closure of ill will and the understanding of boundaries that cannot be crossed now. Jiang Cheng can only do one but not the other. He chooses hate for his continued nature, even while he is adamantly protecting Jin Ling by the end. While Wei Wuxian knows that resentment is not something that will create true happiness and nurturing growth that people strive for.
Reconciliation is to come to terms with that which you lacked, and to be more, to be better. Jiang Cheng accepts his core nature of resentment which would not last next to the altruism that Wei Wuxian chooses more than once. Kindness and Resentment cannot coexist at the same time. To resent is to be cruel, to be happy is to be kind. Both men are too tired to understand the other, and why they choose to part as a peace offering, an understanding that they will never thrive with the other.

Introducing: The Which MXTX Character do You Most Want to Study Like a Little Bug Tournament Bracket
Tumblr media
Starting February 20, 2023 (American time), I'll be running a tournament via tumblr polls to determine once and for all which Mo Xiang Tong Xiu webnovel character the fanbase most wants to study like a little bug.
FAQ:
What do you mean by "most want to study like a little bug"?
Which character makes you want to pick them up, put them in a glass jar, examine them with a little magnifying glass, and poke them with a stick to see how they react? Which character is so so small and pathetic and also truly deeply bizarre? If you don't get what I'm talking about, this poll may not be for you.
Why on earth are you doing sixty-four characters?

@scorpioyukina inspired by our convo I cobbled together a ranking system for the writing of mxtx characters based on my own biases and my uncertain memory of reading mdzs two years ago and tgcf at least a year ago
Tier 1 (life-changing): wei wuxian, jiang cheng, jin ling, nie huaisang, xie lian, mu qing
Tier 2 (good!): lan xichen, jin guangyao, madame yu, wen ning, jun wu, he xuan, feng xin, ling wen, yushu huang, shi qingxuan, lan qianqiu (boring but cohesive arc), yin yu
Tier 3 (medium): jin zixuan, jiang fengmian, jiang yanli (love her but she's underdeveloped), wen qing (WASTED potential), luo qingyang (love her but she's pretty straightforward), quan yizhen, jian lan
Tier 4 (actively gritting my teeth to get through these scenes): mo xuanyu, qi rong, hua cheng, lan sizhui, xiao-ying from book 1
Tier 5 (just shoot me): guzi, luo binghe probably idk
untierable (either tier 1 or tier 5): lan wangji
mutuals feel free to add on!

Am I missing something or is there no normal father/son relationship in any of MXTX's novels...?
TianLang Jun and Luo BingHe: Try to kill each other on their first few meetings.
MoBei-Jun and his father: Dad didn't notice or care about his preteen son going missing for days.
Jiang Cheng and Jiang FengMian: Can't even hold a casual conversation together (amongst other problems).
Lan WangJi / Lan XiChen and QingHeng Jun: Almost never meet (if at all).
Lan WangJi and SiZhui: Relationship starts after SiZhui loses his memories and entire family, never address each other as father and son, SiZhui is never actually acknowledged as LWJ's heir.
Wei WuXian and SiZhui: Have a father/mother/big brother and son/lil brother relationship and only remember said relationship(s) days (weeks?) after their reunion (after not seeing each other for 13/16 years).
Jin GuangYao and Jin GuangShan: Father kicks son down stairs, manipulates and mistreats him, son has father raped to death...
Feng Xin and CuoCuo: ........Enough said.
Qi Rong and Gu Zi: Father possesses son's real dad's body which results in one of the weirdest and most unhealthy yet most beautiful father/son relationships ever.
Gu Zi and his real dad: Abusive.
Xie Lian and the king of XianLe (probably the closest to normal): Argue every time they meet.
Qi Rong and his dad: Abusive.
The few relationships that are normal involve the father dying early (Wei ChangZe/Wei Ying and Jin ZiXuan/Jin Ling).

Generally carefree, but not irresponsible, if given a task, he takes it seriously. He's also very curious, both in the way of general knowledge and people, he will indulge in reading as well as gossip. Zhongxin is soft, emotionally and physically, but with a will of iron and he will not stand by and watch injustice happening. He greatly enjoys taking care of others and is definitely a protector. Despite what he might seem, he is not to be underestimated. He might not fully be as good at fighting and cultivating as Jiang Wanyin and Wei Wuxian, but he is good enough to be one of the Jiang top disciples when they were young.
Weapons:Bow and arrows, sword (xǐtuō, 洗脱)
PHYSICAL
Build: Chubby/fat, but muscular & strong.
Height: 182 cm (5'12")
Hair: Black
Eyes: Light brown
Skin: Tanned
Facial features:Round, soft face, plump cheeks, button nose and thick eyebrows. Few would call him handsome, but most would call him cute and he has a pretty smile.
BACKGROUND (tw: mentioning of postpartum psychosis & hurting of a baby)
Jiang Kang was born a healthy, chubby and easy baby, despite that, his mother rejected him and even tried to drown him. Thankfully, he was saved by his grandmother. One day, his mother was just gone. Exactly what happened, no one knows, but the birth of her son changed her (postpartum psychosis). His father, Jiang Songliu, searched for her, but never found her. Except for this, which he of course doesn't remember, his childhood was happy and he got to play with his táng-gē and táng-jiě in Lotus Pier (and later also Wei-shixiong) (his father was first cousin once removed to Jiang Fengmian). Of course, they didn't always play, they had to study and train too, since they were all Jiang Disciples as well.
His life was good. The only hardship being when Yú-fūrén decided to punish him (and the others, which they usually did deserve). And no, she never berated him for being fat, he had always been a chubby kid and continued to be so. To people's surprise, she even defended him once when someone pointed out that it was a bad sight with a fat cultivation disciple, to which Yu-furen declared 'that at least no one could accuse them for not taking care and feed their disciples, unlike some other sects' and Zidian had sparked. Zongxin saw this and was stunned, having never expected her to stand up for him. Fengmian was, as always, very kind to him, having grown up with his father.
Then the Wens decided to change the Cultivation World for all of them. When they arrived at Lotus Pier, he tried his best to defend it, to defend his home, his family and all those he loved, but he failed. Oh, how he failed. Though, he would get a chance for revenge.
Presumed dead, he was thrown into a mass grave with the other killed at the massacre. By some kind of miracle, or rather thanks to his extra padding and a strong golden core, he survived all his injuries and was found by grave robbers. Yes, as despicable as that is, the group of homeless thieves weren't so heartless that they left him for dead. Instead they pulled him away from there (although also taking anything of value he had on him) and eventually managed to find a farmer that let the young disciple stay (he was 15 at the time). (What exactly happens here can change depending on thread and muse interaction)
It took awhile, but eventually, he got reunited with Wanyin, Wuxian and Yanli. Though, the events did change him and he has frequent nightmares and periods of amnesia, but with time, he became more like his old self and he tries to hide the emotional wounds he is still carrying inside him.
He has always stayed loyal to Jiang Wanyin and is helping him training the Jiang disciples and doing other things when needed as well.
Very short and quick timeline
5 yo - Starts cultivation and martial arts training
13 yo - Wanyin and Wuxian go to Gusu. He wants to join them, but he is still too young.
15 yo - Burning of Lotus Pier. He’s assumed to be dead, but survives.
20 yo - Joins the Siege of the Burial Mounds out of loyalty to his Sect, but disagrees with how the situation, and his old friend, is treated.
33 yo - The fall of Jin Guangyao.

listen to me
[azul ashengrotto x fengmian xin]
finally have a whole day for myself and no schoolwork! OWO! anywhooooooooo, this is the first special little something i held over a while back and i can finally have time to do it!!! first and foremost, i’m so so so so so sorry if your oc didn’t get chosen as i did use a random number generator and i just wanted to say that all of your ocs are so interesting! congratulations for the first ‘chosen one’.... @nonsensical-twistedriddles
forgive me if your oc is a little ooc or not like her in any way but i really had a lot of fun drawing and writing her! now onto the story~
(WARNING: EPISODE THREE SPOILERS)
“WHOA! the place is actually really awesome! i didn’t know the inside looked so cool!” ace’s eyes glimmered as he scanned his surroundings with the other first years. “it’s really a different feeling once you’re not in here trying to steal something.” deuce added, while taking in his whole surroundings this time and finally feeling calm as he didn’t have to steal anything. “welcome to the atlantica memorial museum, everyone. today is the mostro lounge’s educational tour...forget that. well i did just use that excuse to reserve the whole place for ourselves, so please enjoy your time here.”
fengmian’s eyes bounced back on forth from each picture on the wall to each sculpture delicately placed on top of a coral. how interesting, is this really what life under the sea is like? “see something that piques your interest, fengmian?” there beside her stood azul. she brushed him off and started swimming away to the position where he (well indirectly) stole the photo of a little field trip he and the prince had when they were younger. “are you not going to go and explore with the rest?” she shook her head. “i’m watching you so you can put the picture back where it belongs. besides, i was a little worried about you.” she whispered the last part of her sentence, a slight pink dusted her cheeks. “fufufufu, why do you have such little faith in me?” fengmian saw his eyes as he stared intently at the picture in his hands. azul’s eyes were filled with...hesitance yet sadness and regret. “i just thought that if only all of my pictures were gone, practically nonexistent...i thought it would help erase my past of being a pathetic, dumb little octopus...”
“the sea witch became recognized by people after overturning and hiding her villainous past. i wanted to become someone like her yet...in the end, i couldn’t accept who i really was and i rejected my past. what a pathetic, poor unfortunate soul i am.” azul felt a warm sensation on his hand. it was fengmian’s hand delicately wrapped around his. “azul...you’re stronger now. you’re so much stronger than what you were in the past.” she continued. “everyone at night raven college, even the headmaster acknowledges you for being hardworking. hard-work is tougher to perfect than magic. you’re right maybe you hate your past...you wish to turn away from it....believe me i get that. our past will never leave us, it will always still be there to haunt us however...either you can see your past as a foe or you can see you past as a friend.”
“with believing your past as a friend, you’re able to see how much you’ve grown. your past doesn’t matter anymore, you can’t do anything to change it. however, what you can do is learn from it.” azul sighed and placed the picture back on the wall. “besides, all i see now, is a hard-working, determined sorcerer, not some helpless octopus. you might not be able to do anything in the past, but you can still strive to be a better person now, as the present is something you can change.” azul took both of fengmian’s hands and brought them together. he gave them a little peck. “you sound like a wise, old lady.” she blushed. “well, just giving my insights.”
all of a sudden, she was enveloped in a warm, snug embrace. azul’s arms wrapped around her, as he rested his head on her shoulder. “i’ll keep your insights then.” he whispered in her ear. fengmian stood there, motionless and in shock. however, she decided to return a gentle smile, even if he couldn’t see it. “you better.” she replied as she reciprocate the gentle gesture. “i may not be one to judge, but you did look adorable in your pictures.” he pulled away from the hug and chuckled. she then saw something odd. something very unfamiliar. azul had a pure, genuine smile. “you really are an odd, old woman.” for some reason and although not explainable and slightly odd, her chest felt warm. she was practically bursting with joy. “you better listen to my words then, young man. or else..!” she joked, which made the two crack up slightly.
“azullllll! fengmiannnn! can we go already my paws are getting tired from all this swimming.” they both heard a familiar voice of a probably exhausted and hungry grim. “yeah, my hands are getting all wrinkly from being in water too long.” ace added as he swam over to the both of them. azul and fengmian glanced at each other for a while before azul chuckled and fengmian just had a slight smile plastered on her face. “alright, alright. then let’s go back to night raven college.”
-
“HAS anyone noticed azul becoming more....cheerful lately? his ‘sneaky, cunning, slimy bastard’ vibes has kinda worn off.” ruggie spoke with a mouth full of food. fengmian was quietly enjoying her lunch with grim and the savanaclaw boys. “beats me, he’ll still always be a scheming, slimy bastard to me.” leona yawned. “fengmian, have you been noticing this?” jack asked his fellow first year friend. it was then she started paying attention.
azul had a genuine smile on his face. not his typical smile when he knew someone was about to make a deal, and also not his usual smirk when he knew he was going to get his way. it was a smile only she saw back in the museum. fengmian looked amused, somewhat surprised as well, and extremely happy at the same time. so he did listen to her words. you can still strive to be a better person now, as the present is something you can change. “hmm, not really.” she finally answered jack’s question. “well he’s happier now, that’s all that matters.” grim and the savanaclaw boys exchanged glances with each other. they seemed to be sending each other messages using telepathy. “hey...fengmian...”
“hm?”
“you’re blushing. and grinning.”
“like an idiot.”
“no i’m not. i don’t grin.”
“you’re still grinning.”
“shut up before i hit you with a plate.”
she was still happy nonetheless and just couldn’t refrain from grinning. azul was happy, and so she was happy, and that’s all that mattered.

3, 6, 12, and 13 for the ask game.
3. screenshot or description of the worst take you've seen on tumblr
There's a lot but I guess the one that said that in an AU LAN QIREN would totally marry Yu Ziyuan and they would rise to power, and Yunmeng Jiang would languish because Wei Wuxian is a loser along with Jiang Fengmian and Lan Qiren would displace his own nephews and say that Jiang Cheng was his heir because he's perfect and only wasn't perfect because of Wei Wuxian being around, and Lan Qiren would of course let Madam Yu put his mean nephew Lan Wangj in his place for I dunno thinking Jiang Cheng is vile and btw Lan Wangji is also a loser.
6. which ship fans are the most annoying?
Cheng/xian If it was alive I would kick it off a cliff for existing.
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
Ahhhhh..... Yue Qingyuan I guess... I dunno people are mean about him and make him something he isn't (actually let me reword that, they make him what Shen Jiu is in the actual plot).
13. worst blorboficiation
Hahahaha, the trifecta of Jin Guangyao, Shen Jiu and Feng Xin (yes the last isn't as bad as the other two but he's a coward with no spine).

Psst!
Hey!
Heeeeeyyy!
So I had a draft prompt, of Luo binghe meeting his demonic younger half brothers Wei wuxian and Hua Cheng.
To start off, Luo Binghe is already on his 15th year and treated with the outmost kindness by Shen Qingqiu after the skinner incident and the dream escape. He doesn't know why the sudden change but he doesn't question it either.
Rather he is quite content with this new life where he also gets to go on a lot of missions after proving his work.
One day, Shen sends him to go and help the Yummeng Sect since Bai Zhan Peak had gotten into a fight with them and now they needed to mend relationships, so Shen brought forth Luo Binghe to go on his first solo mission.
With his new and improved skills, Luo Binghe has a breeze of a time hunting down the demons that spawned on this place and with all of the time in the world, he goes to eat at the streets of the Yiling city.
This is where he finds a young kid, no older than ten possibly, running away from dogs and crying when he reached a corner.
And on the other side he sees a bunch of children running away with some left over food while all of the dogs are chasing the boy.
The sight of the helpless boy brings him back painful memories of his past and how he used to get beaten up by others while fighting in the streets, until they are overshadowed by Shen Qingqiu's words that were uttered back at Meng Mo's dream.
It only took a few small steps before the dogs started running away, though even when every dog had been shooed away, the boy was still trembling and crying, so Binghe decided to give him a small peach to eat.
At the moment their eyes met, they noticed a resemblance to one another.
They both shared their mother's feminine features.
But anyone could look the same as the other right? Luo Binghe shook his thoughts off and just carried on.
Unfortunately for him, that boy was a sticky one and eventually followed him all the way to the end of Yiling city and Lotus pier, where Jiang Fengmiang noticed the boy and immediately recognized him as his friend's son.
"What's your name little one?"
"Wei Ying." He said while still clinging to Luo Binghe, dirting his green and white robes, though the other didn't seem to care much about it and just kept him close to his leg.
Binghe noticed that at the sound of the name, the sect leader paled and quickly tried to get the servants to clean the boy up and also ask him questions of his parents and who they were, [Though Luo Binghe kind of saw through his smile that he might have known them already.] Which scared the boy off and surprised quite a lot of people.
I mustn't make Shizun wait more, so Luo Binghe choose to let the boy stay in the Lotus pier sect so the boy could be cared for and then go back to Cang Qiong Mountain sect, unknow to him that somewhere along the line, Wei Ying decided to run away and hide in the carriage that Binghe had gone back in to Qing Jing Peak.
Shen Qingqiu is just full on confused as he sees the young protagonist with a little boy... who looks somewhat like him... but is in fact not even a character that was supposed to appear in PDIW.
So
What
The
Hell
Is he system!! ??
Where did this child come from!?!??!
Oh great now Ying-er has stolen everyone's hearts he can't chase him out now.
He also can't believe that someone [Ming Fan and Ning Yingying] had told the other students who in turn told everyone else about Ying-er and how his "Shizun (and A'Luo) was so kind to save such a cute child from the slums!"
Jiang Fengmiang eventually found out but seeing that Wei Ying was leaving a good life, then he let him stay under Shen Qingqiu's and Luo Binghe's guidance. [And it's not like Yu Ziyuan will take kindly to Fengmiang's favorism towards Wei Ying so-]
Wei Wuxian stays on Cang Qiong Mountain sect. Which alters the story a lot as Ning Yingying becomes more of a mature Jiejie to Wei Wuxian and Ming Fan stops bullying Luo Binghe so that Wei doesn't tattle on him to Shen Qingqiu.
Luo Binghe becomes overprotective during all these years. And can only be called Bing-ge by A'Xian.
[Also the baseless rumours about Shen Qingqiu start to change as the other peak lord's become over protective over a soft Shen Qingqiu and Wei Wuxian.]
+100 points!
SQQ: I didn't even do anything!!
AND THEN THE IMMORTAL ASSEMBLY CONFERENCE APPEARS.
Shen Qingqiu comes back brokenhearted to mourn Binghe's death, Wei Wuxian is told by everyone that Luo Binghe is dead, but he doesn't believe anyone except Shen Qingqiu who says he is just gone [Though the rest think he is just delirious and suffering so they don't correct him at all.]
This is where Wei Wuxian starts taking an interest in demonic cultivation and ghosts in hopes that he can connect with his Bing-ge. However he doesn't get that far since there is just not a lot of demonic references to draw from in Qing Jing Peak.
But a terrible fate meets him after a year when Wei wuxian is sent by Shen Shifu to study under the guidance of the Jummeng sect in hopes that:
1) Wei Wuxian doesn't meet a terrible fate after Luo Binghe comes back.
2)Or, if he doesn't meet a terrible fate, then he hopes Wei wuxian doesn't plan on getting revenge after Luo Binghe tells him the truth.
3) He really shouldn't be here at all, he should be with kids of his own age, and Jiang Fengmiang has a son of his own that us around the same age as him. <This was the only point he told WWX>
So Wei Wuxian is now taken in as a student and lives for more than a year under the sect leader's guidance, getting along really well with Jiang Chen and Jiang Yanli who seems to have this motherly aura just like his Jiejie.
[That protective side of Yanli also reminds him of Luo Binghe who had caught him in time when Wei wuxian had climbed the bamboo shoots and broken one due to him climbing so fast after a dog had appeared around
Some time passes by, Wei Wuxian comes back to ask Shen Qingqiu if he has permission in going to the Cloud Ressess pwetty pweasee~ because his friend Jiang Cheng is also going and Shen Qingqiu wanted him to socialize with more kids his age soooooo-
Shen can see right through him [he isn't as sneaky in hiding the truth as Luo Binghe], sighs and hesitates in letting the boy go [He's lonely. No system, no Binghe, no A'Xian. No one is here to annoy him at all it feels weird and he is getting tired of Airplane-bro's shenanigans].
But before he can give him an answer, a message appears.
A new mission: to go to the Jinlan city and help the people with the Sowers' problem.
Wei Wuxian jumps at the chance of going along with him so that he can prove to Shen Qingqiu he can start to learn cultivation in Cloud Ressess.
And Shen Qingqiu takes on the offer, even though he doesn't want him to go away from Qing Jing Peak, yet he isn't willing to let him cultivate here in fear of... well the first two points.
And oh boy.
Oh boy oh boy oh boy...
It's a mess.
Th start with the mess, Wei Wuxian meets a new disciple of Shen Qingqiu who had been sent to study here because he wanted to learn the fourth arts [and because he was recently set off from his mountain.]
Xie Lian! Hiding crown prince of Xianle Kingdom [WWX tries not gasp too much at the sudden appearance of a crown prince.]
And he is older than him by two years as he just reached 17 not long ago!
Wei Wuxian at first feels a bit of envy as he sees that Shen Qingqiu is willing to train everyone except him, but the boy did seem to be really kind and heroic as well as quite the troublemaker who didn't really like following rules and rather went by what his heart told him was right! Just like him!(kinda)
The plot is pretty normal, nothing changes as much in Jinlan city which is a breath of relief to Shen, Wei Wuxian is however a bit curious as to why this Huan Hua palace sect disciple [Gonyi Xiao] was friendly with Shifu, because Shen Qingqiu never told him about him too!
Granted he thought Shizun seemed to still be mourning so he didn't try to write him letters about what he was doing un case he only made it worse.
Anyways both Xie Lian and Wei Wuxian spot a sower crawling out and try to stop it before it can hurt anyone else.
Xie Lian eventually manages to catch it and with a smile on his face he turns around to see... Wei isn't here??
Oh! No! Xie Lian turns around while carrying on the sower to try and find them as fast as possible. And it wasn't as long as he thought since he can hears a small voice calling him "Xie Shixong!" From the streets.
And Xie Lian is met with a familiar face.
"Hong-er!"
The little boy immediately goes towards him while also bitting Wei's hand who proceeds to curse as he lets go.
Both of them notice that they have separated from Shen Qingqiu, so they, bringing Hong-er along after he faints in Xie Lian's arms (since he is so tired after following XL for so long).
"Liu-Shidi!" Both of them suddenly heard their master from afar, and immediately, they raised their sword to go after the voice who was in a frantic.
Just what could be so bad that their Shifu Shen Qingqiu had to call for backup!?
Though it was in the evening, the sun was slowly setting down and the clouds where begging to cover all of the sun for themselves.
It was not raining, though it seemed so.
Xie Lian was the first to see a man pouring all of his body's spiritual energy into his legs, only to abruptly stop as he coughed up blood.
Wei Wuxian only got in a bit later as he saw the tremendous amount of force bring used to push Shen Qingqiu against the wall and hear something in his body crack.
"SHIFU!"
Without wasting a breath, Xie Lian gave Hong-er back to Wei Wuxian and headed on his own to fight the monster that had pushed his Shifu against the wall like that.
Luo binghe gets some words out to his Shizun before giving a glare down at the new disciple that almost managed to stab him.
Wei Wuxian's face goes white, then red, then so many emotions and colors cover his face as he doesn't know just what he should feel.
-Luo Binghe is alive.
-Bing-ge is alive!
-No...
-Luo Binghe is a demon.
-His brother is a demon.
-His brother is hurting Shifu. Bing-ge would never do such a thing!
-But this wasn't his caring and kind Bing-ge now was he?
-He had died in the Abyss.
-No he stayed in the Abyss. And only the gods would know just how much he has suffered.
-And his Shifu... He threw him...
-Bu-but That doesn't sound like the kind Shifu who dotted on Bing-ge and him!
-Nor the Shifu that stayed mourning for a long time and buried Bing-ge's sword!
-This doesn't make sense!
-This doesn't make sense at all!
All in a span of 1.5 seconds before Hong-er bit his hand and proceeded to run away again. The little brat!! He even tried to hit him in the balls!!
However he shouldn't be thinking about the boy right now because Bing-ge. is. not. alright. at. ALL.
More importantly. How is the new student Xie Lian just able to keep up with his brother who spent years in that abyss. His Shixong is so cool— Right BINGHE!
"Gege!"
Binghe manages to stop as he sees Wei Wuxian whose words look like they have been stuck on his throat the moment he laid eyes on him.
Shit.
What could he say?!
"Gege?" Xie Lian is confused by the wording, and thus stops too, waiting for an answer from Wei Wuxian.
Who is mentally screaming so much Shang Qinghua would 'Mood' him for it!
"Why..." He can only get those words out before Shen opened his mouth again, "You got a lot of guts to come back openly. Aren't you afraid of others discovering your true identity?"
WAIT HE KNOWS. SHIFU KNOWS THE DEMON.
They watched the two of them just talk to each other in the most dramatic way possible, not knowing how to address this or in what way they could help.
The two of them just decided to stay there, quiet.
"Now that you are back, what exactly do you intend to do?"
"I missed the way Shizun treated me so well. I've returned to see him."
Shizun. Xie Lian finally started putting the pieces together. This man must have been the one beloved disciple that had died a long time ago, Wei wuxian's brother, and the talented one that many many other of the Qing Jing Peak disciples compared him to.
Luo Binghe.
Wei wuxian could feel it, the sincerity in Binghe's voice, that was Bing-ge talking, no one else except Bingge who would be so bold as to declare his love out towards his Shizun.
But Wei wuxian and Shen Qingqiu had different views on his words.
Wei Wuxian and Xie Lian's faces turned blue after hearing Shen Qingqiu's thoughts:
"Just to kill me? What about the plague in Jinlan city? It can't be that all the residents of this city have all 'Treated you well'."
Alas...
Shifu... you are digging your own grave!!!
Both of them where snapped back to their fighting stance as Luo Binghe's eyes turned cold and his smile disappeared. No. Wei Wuxian didn't like this man at all! It was the first time he ever saw Luo Binghe so cold and distant like this. Even when he was bullied by Ming Fan, or when he had those dreams landscapes where the kids on the streets hurt him worse than the dogs did for Wei Wuxian. He was never such a cold person!
"Shizun really abhors the demon race." The more steps Luo Binghe took forward to Shen, the more Xie Lian moved. Irritating him enough so that he would pop another vein when he saw Xie Lian in front of Shen Qingqiu while Wei Wuxian quickly went to help Shen Qingqiu up, In the end only irritating Luo Binghe even more as he saw that not even A'Xian was on his side.
"No. It would be more correct that he abhors me." Seeing as his master was able to get his brother to side with him.
"Does Shizun really think that because of half of my bloodline... sooner or later I will doing things such as murdering, arson, massacring everyone in a capture city, destroying countries?"
At that last part Xie Lian had his air cut off, Shen Qingqiu said nothing and Wei wuxian, he still couldn't process anything at this moment except for the need to get Shizun to a medical doctor before his poison keeps acting up... and later have a word with him about what really happened to his brother.
But they needed to deal with Bing-ge first.
"You are such a hypocrite!!"
This was the moment where Wei Wuxian took Shen to find Mu-Shifu while Xie Lian kept his focus on Binghe—
"Hong-er!! MOVE!"
Wei Wuxian's eyes flickered as he saw the small boy below the buildings where Xie Lian and Binghe were still fighting, both unknowingly had caused the degree to fall right over to him.
"HONG-ER!"
A flashing light of white appeared out of nowhere, and before anyone could see it coming, a new person had arrived.
The promised disciple of the Gusu clan and already a prodigy at 15.
As well as holding a few connections with the Xie Lian when they met at the Shangyuan festival.
Lan Wanji.

Hi! I'm introducing some friends to the untamed and making some notes on where the netflix subs don't give enough information/good translations, according to the fandom. I saw your translation of the 'to die by your hand' scene and it KILLED me, so I was wondering if there are any other particular scenes you think it's important to note a different translation? Thank you so much if you can!
ooh so there aren't any scenes i can think of where the translation falls so so short of the actual emotion and meaning as much as that one, however there are definitely some less dramatic instances.
in general, i would say that mandarin (and a lot of other languages from what i've heard) has a lot more inherent emotional depth than english, so in translation, a lot of the subtitles sound very emotionally neutral or ambivalent when they really aren't.
the instance of this that sticks out to me the most is during the confrontation between wei wuxian and jiang cheng at the guanyin temple (ep 48, ~9 minutes in) where wuxian says to jiang cheng「都不要放在心上了」(dou bu yao fang zai xin shang), which the subtitles translate as "please don't keep it in your heart," which i'm actually not really mad at as a translation, but it's just not a phrase used much in english, so it sounds slightly awkward/doesnt convey the emotional context of that phrase.
so for context, mandarin has multiple ways of saying, loosely, "don't worry." there's「不要擔心」(bu yao dan xin), which is probably the most common and versatile to say it, and there's「不要放在心上」(bu yao fang zai xin shang), which is the one wuxian says to jiang cheng. (there's other ways too, they're just not rly relevant here) the literal translation of it is "do not put it on your heart," which the netflix is pretty close to, but ofc that doesn't tell u much abt usage. the way i've explained it in the past was, say u made a mistake at work and were beating urself up over it.「不要擔心」is something your coworker or boss might say to you to essentially say "hey it's no big deal, don't worry about it, ur fine;" it can be very casual. whereas, once you get home and start talking abt ur bad day at work,「不要放在心上」is more likely something your parent/sibling/partner/other loved one would say to you as they put a bowl of ur favorite soup in front of u. it has a level of inherent familiarity and deeper desire to comfort the person ur talking to than「不要擔心」. (note: i say inherent bc「不要擔心」doesnt have to always be casual/relatively emotionally neutral, it can be said w emotion ofc but the words themselves do not carry as much emotion as「不要放在心上」.
other than that, i’m not remembering any other specific scenes rn (if i remember smth, i’ll rb w the addition and @ you), but one thing that happens throughout the show is translation discrepancy when characters are addressing each other. for example, when wuxian and jiang cheng talk to yanli, the subtitles always have them both addressing her by name, but in chinese, family members often dont address each other by name, like my younger brothers both call me 姐 (jie), which means older sister. jiang cheng calls yanli 阿姐 (a-jie) most of the time (the 阿 at the beginning is just a prefix used in front of names and other forms of address to express familiarity, it’s the same character used in a-yuan). wuxian calls yanli 師姐 (shijie), which is what you call a senior female fellow student studying under the same master/in the same school/etc.
(rest under the cut bc this got rly long)
nie huaisang calls mingjue 大哥 (dage)/哥 (ge); 哥 means older brother and 大 means big, so 大哥 is often used for the eldest brother (esp common if there are multiple brothers). an interesting thing is that wangji does not call xichen 哥 or any variation of it, rather he calls him 兄長 (xiong zhang), which also means older brother but is a term of respect and much more formal, so that’s also a reflection of their characters and upbringing. 兄長 is not in common use nowadays but 哥 very much still is.
after nie mingjue, lan xichen, and jin guangyao take their oath of sworn brotherhood, they also change their forms of address with each other. for example, guangyao calls xichen 二哥 (er ge), which means second older brother (since xichen is the second oldest) and calls mingjue 大哥 (like huaisang does). (i feel like i vaguely remember guangyao being called 三弟 (san di), which means third younger brother, by someone but don’t remember if it was xichen or mingjue.)
(also impt to note that in chinese culture, familial terms as forms of address aren’t strictly reserved for family (whether that be blood or found). for example, in a casual setting, you can address any woman who is your parents’ age or between their age and your grandparents age as 阿姨 (a-yi) (or name + 阿姨), which is the term for your maternal aunt, and you can address any man of the same age range as 叔叔 (shu shu), which is what you’d call your paternal uncle. similarly in a familiar/casual setting, you can call women older than you but younger than your parents 姐姐/name + 姐, like the daughters, who are all younger than me, of my parents’ friends call me jessie jie-jie. and you can call men in the same age range 哥哥/name + 哥, like how wang yibo calls xiao zhan, zhan-ge. the same applies for people younger than you, with which you would use 妹妹, younger sister, and 弟弟, younger brother.)
another example is that jin guangshan calls jiang fengmian 江兄 (jiang xiong), 江being his family name ofc and 兄 meaning brother (same character as in 兄長, which wangji calls xichen), since they’re of the same age and status and their wives are sworn sisters. xichen, on the other hand, calls fengmian 江宗主 (jiang zong zhu), which means sect leader jiang. in the subtitles, these are often just translated as “you,” when they’re talking directly to him.
so in general, there is a lot of information abt characters’ relationships, level of familiarity with each other, age, etc that is contained in their forms of address that just doesn’t come across in the netflix subs, since those default to their names like 80% of the time.
hope this helps!! if u (or anyone else) have other questions/scenes ur wondering abt, feel free to ask, i’m always down to talk translations. and if you want to see more of my beef w netflix subs a;lskjdf, all of my cql gifsets with dialogue on them have either been translated from scratch by me or i’ve edited the netflix translations, and i usually put some notes abt my translation in the tags. any sets that i’ve translated from scratch are under my translations tag, though most of these are actually for word of honor/shan he ling and not cql.
edit: check my reblog in the notes for some more additions!!
