Foraged wild fennel dye
Skeins as they were drying and I was already so excited about how they were turning out
In autumn, I took myself picking in the definitely haunted abandoned orchid behind the railway, between the housing estate and the wetlands. There were signs of at least one person living in the bushes there, and I hoped that I wasn't about to surprise anyone/make them feel uncomfortable. I helped myself to blackberries, and stripped the wild growing fennel of all the feathery leaves I could find. (Fennel is invasive in my part of the world.) The plants in the orchid were tall after a wet summer, going to seed. In the way of annuals going to seed, there weren't many leaves left, but plenty for my first experiment with fennel.
Pictured: my dear friend with a giant fennel plant. This friend first showed me the abandoned orchid.
I try to do 1:1 leaves to weight of fibre in all my dye baths, but I'm not precise about it.
The dyebath of fennel leaves I heated and let cool over several days. The smell was the most potion of potions I have ever. Aniseed but turned up to 11.
I mordanted my fibre with alum before adding it to the dyebath
After heating and cooling to extract the colour, I strained out the leaves and added the alum mordanted fibre. Gently heated and held at 80c for as long as I could be bothered (an hour).
(Note to self for next time: try flowers as well as leaves.)
Modified with iron water - warm water and {iron water preparation} left in bucket for 1 hour. This shifts the tone from a yellowish green down to a forest green <3
So I can never seem to get a good photo, it is much much greener in real life I swear

siantmiller: FELIX played by Jacob Elordi in Emerald Fennell's Saltburn
•
Earth shatteringly beautiful, wearing a moth eaten jumper, clean shaven, tattooed with the family crest star. An easy smile.
•
This was my starting point for hair and make-up design; Felix is a superstar on arrival - it's always been that way, handed to him on a plate- but he's not cool.
•
Felix needed to have undone, tousled hair; a just- rolled-out-of-bed-looking-gorgeous kind of vibe. Nothing contrived and certainly nothing that smacked of a haircut anytime recently.
•
Fortunately, Jacob had been growing his hair, and in my first fitting with him, I cut in a structure to support the shape I wanted to create, but without it looking like it had just been done in any way, with period accurate long sideburns. A few weeks ahead of filming, this provided us time for the shape to settle in.
•
Contriving the uncontrived in this job is often one of the trickiest of things to achieve, and daily preparation of this style with product and diffusion was required to create the tousled shape, whilst looking as if Jacob hadn't been anywhere near the hair and makeup trailer!
•
For the tattoo design, images were created in-house and processed for printing using ProCreate. We tested traditional tattoo colours, tones and sizes for the right look.
•
Emerald requested 'carpe diem' on Felix's inner arm, and for this I extracted the font from the family crest.
•
The single star from the family crest was tested with different configurations of multiple stars, finally settling on matching clusters seen on Felix and Venetia's hands.
•
The singular, torso positioned, angel wing, serves as a rather ironic mirror to later events.
•
The eyebrow piercing; two cut ends taken from a fake nose ring, were applied with Telesis.
•
Tattoo cover airbrushed on with MaqPro Creamy Air.
•
Makeup was super-natural looking for a clean, fresh and handsome look.
•
Hair cut by me
•
Hair & make-up perfectly styled and applied, during filming, by Nabeel Hussain and @simoneidalondon

Some of Lena's Handmade Spells
Going with the Flow: Happiness Spell (Attempt 4)
Majoram for Luck and Happiness.
Masterwort (Hog Fennel) mixed with Yarrow for Courage
Huckleberry crushed with Wintergreen for Hex-breaking
Lavender for Peace and Harmony
Crush all of the above and mix. If not pregnant nor have dermatitis, boil the above and strain. Bathe in the resulting tea or drink (Note to self: experiments did not determine which method improves spell. Perhaps more data points are needed? Four tries seems far too small a sample.). If pregnant and/or have dermatitis either avoid Yarrow or mix into a satchel to wear (Note to self: does satchel wearing actually work? What is the best way to test this hypothesis?)
Recite in language appropriate for magic:
"Release all burdens and negativity.
Alleviate all pain and anxiety.
Break all hexes that sunder.
Restore one's youthful wonder.
Amplify all joy and peace.
After one day, the spell will cease."
(Note to self: translate into Irish or Latin? Why is Latin used for magic when my people come from an Irish heritage and Rome was a colonizer? Didn't pagan magic exist prior to the existence of Latin? More Research is needed.)
Necessary disclaimer: Kara and anyone reading this, please tread carefully with yarrow as it can impact dermatitis and shouldn't be used if pregnant. (Seriously, Kara, don't you dare touch my herb and berry supply again. I am not liable for your ridiculous prank teas. I'm watching you.)
Note to Lena: I only did the prank teas twice! And in my defense, I had no idea that herb caused diarrhea! You don't really label them with warnings. What if I helped by adding a disclaimer to all your labels to mark which ones are safe to ingest and/or drink?
Note to Kara: If it keeps you busy, then fine, but my notes are specifically for humans since I am a human. I do not have the data to determine what is safe for you to ingest.
Note to Lena: I'm pretty impervious and invulnerable to most things and have an iron stomach. I can even handle poisons that you definitely can't.
Note to Kara: Are you serious?? Did you ingest POISONS?? Please don't do that. I don't care how invulnerable you are. I'd like to not tempt fate. My heart simply cannot take that. Also, these notes defeat the purpose of the spell. I'm trying to restore my youthful wonder and joy and not faint from worry by you testing whether you can poison yourself with my herbs. Thanks.
Note to Lena: That's valid. I'll stop tempting fate.
Results:
Spent one day in a state of joy and wonder. Everything I did felt like I was trying it new, and it brought such happiness. I felt no anxiety or fear the entire twenty-three hours and forty-eight minutes. I discovered, however, that I was incapable of long-term planning. It seems the youthful wonder translated into being caught in the present moment, where I went with the flow. I also discovered a deep eagerness to share my joy with anyone within my vicinity.
Physical affection came much easier and without fear or anxiety or worries about people's perceptions of me. I was able to express my emotions freely in a way I've never done before, which was very mind-opening. Perhaps I need to discern ways to express my emotions more readily in safe settings without magic?
Perhaps an adjustment to spell to allow for planning?
Breaking the Hex of the Luthor Name (Attempt 2)
Note to self: This is probably nonsense. It's not like I can magic away people's memories of how awful and abusive my family was. But maybe I can somehow break any hexes placed on the name that somehow impact me unknowingly? This is my second attempt as I accidentally exploded the mixture the first time. I am unsure as to how that happened. If it happens again, then will adjust ingredients.
Vertivert
Huckleberry
Wintergreen
Shred the above herbs and pound them into a mixture. Burn the mixture and recite the following:
Break all hexes upon the Luthor Name.
Sunder all evil eyes upon the Luthor Name.
Exorcise all evil cast upon the Luthor Name.
Note to Self: This mixture did not explode! I adjusted the verbiage and verified the pronunciation of all translations into Irish. Latin caused the explosion the first time, and I believe it is because it is a dead language and I cannot locate proper pronunciation guides. Irish is not a dead language and pronunciation guides exist. Irish has also worked well with prior spells I've attempted so why not this one? Also, side note, that spell made me feel a lot lighter and less burdened. Is that wishful thinking on my part or did the spell actually work?
Results:
Four days and twenty minutes since I cast this spell: Donations to my foundation have increased by 120% starting within eight hours of casting my spell. Is this a correlation or causation?
Two months, three days, and sixteen hours since I cast this spell: Donations increased by 202% since last entry in this results column. We've been able to fund so many green energy projects and a ton of medical research! Surely these increases in donations wasn't all due to the spell? Had there been so much hexes on my last name that it impacted my ability to make headway with the foundation? I'm not sure what to think if so. I also am unsure how I would even discern the truth of this or test it in a way that proved causation.
Note from Kara: Lena!!! I totally think this is the spell that broke your stream of bad luck. You probably needed a good hex breaking. I'm so glad you did it!
Note to Kara: Avoid writing in my grimorie -- But Lena, you need outside perspective too for your experiments! I can totally help! -- and stop pouting when I steal my pen back to finish my notes. I will not fall for it. No matter how adorable you look.
Note to Self: Perhaps purchase separate notebook so Kara can write up her reflections on the results of my magic experiments. See if this alleviates her tendency to write in my grimorie.
To Be continued...
May write more eventually.

How smelly do you think mercenaries and travelers or laborers get in Tamriel?
Don't get me wrong I love making jokes about medieval serfs that wash their ass once a year but historical hygiene practices aren't as bad as popularly believed. Granted, the average person is going to smell more "human" than we're accustomed to...
Fixed campsites are not just an in-game convenience. Over time camps become established along roadways and, like settlements, usually near a water source. At the very least there will be a spring to refill canteens and do a quick bird bath before hitting the road again.
Workers at labor settlements (mines, logging operations etc) and frequent travelers will carry a compact kit. Here's Tanis's:
Wooden comb. Porous materials like wood, bone, ivory, or horn remove excess dirt and oils from the hair without the hassle of water washing
Troll fat and beeswax salve with redwort and dragon's tongue extracts for cracked skin, cuts and stings, and some minor sun protection
Cedarwood perfume oil for deodorizing and keeping bugs away. Also antimicrobial though it's not described in those terms
Iron nail file and pick
Cloth made from rough and scratchy plant fibers, which exfoliate and remove dirt from the skin
Chewing stick for cleaning teeth. Often taken from olive or orange trees in Cyrodiil and tossed when the end becomes too frayed
Small pouch of fennel seeds for freshening breath (also a good digestive in the mornings)
A little cake of shaving soap stored in a burlap wrap. Shaving is done with his game knife but I ran out of drawing room

amateur set of aroma associations. aromatherapy is my little relaxing hobby, I am not a perfumer
Satoru Gojo
woody-musky composition with light floral notes. The fragrance fits snugly to the skin
Suguru Geto
oriental woody perfume. his hair and clothes smell of palo santo, he carries a trail of kitchen spices and petricore (Satoru calms down and says even "sobers up" from this fragrance, when you need to put your thoughts in order, Shoko calls him "honey wood")
Shoko Ieiri
among the mixed smells of latex gloves, formalin and cigarettes, her fragrance consists of one tuberose and sounds weak, almost imperceptible
Utahime Iori
nothing came to mind but the scent of white lily and lemon peel
Yuki Tsukumo
I think a refreshing playful composition of neroli and pepper with notes of grapefruit would suit her, while poorly hiding the smell of rubber and metal on her hands
Choso
camphor and tea rose
Mei Mei
fragrance of cashmere, black currant berries, ginger
Kento Nanami
sun-warmed trees, oak and fresh aquatic notes on warm days, in cold weather he will be warmed combination of guryun balm, bergamot and pomegranate peel
Hiromi Higuruma
restrained fragrance of clary sage, cardamom, lavender and cedar
Yuuji Itadori
orange, sage, vetiver
I think Yuu is not picky, it is normal for him to use a 3 in 1 shampoo with an indefinite smell, he has not yet decided what exactly complements it, he uses different probes that Nobara gives him as a present, but most often unconsciously chooses compositions with orange
Megumi Fushiguro
green tea and oak moss, smell of cleanliness, which happens to washed laundry with a powder without fragrance, brought from the cold into the warmth of the room
Ryomen Sukuna
strong vanilla at the beginning and after it sounds deeper with bitter wild herbs and pine needles, supplemented with tobacco, orchid notes and musk, completely eclipsing the original suffocating sweetness
Uraume

Tsumiki Fushiguro
pink pepper and lily of the valley
Toji Fushiguro
woody-resin fragrance with animalistic notes and tobacco (he smokes, his hands and clothes smell of strong cigarettes)

Toge Inumaki
fennel, rosemary, sea buckthorn leaves
Nobara Kugisaki
I don't associate with anything other than perfume Funny by Moschino

aquatic or woody fragrance with tea tree
Hana Kurusu
powdery mimosa
Ryu Nishikori
copaifera balsam, pine resin, clary sage, pineapple and burnt caramel
Takako Uro
gunpowder, lemongrass, blackberry, leather notes
I think to end the thread on this note, it turned out to be longer than I expected. In any case, it was fun for me to pick up fragrances for the characters, relying on my olfactory memory, rather than adjusting to personal preferences (this was especially difficult with Naoya's fragrance😅)

[ID: A sandwich on an English muffin with cheese, a sausage patty, bacon, egg, Hollandaise sauce, and chopped chives. End ID]
Vegan 'sausage' and 'egg' breakfast sandwiches
Soy sauce, maple syrup, liquid smoke, and fresh herbs and spices give savor, depth, and sweetness to these TVP-based sausage patties. A combination of rice flour, all-purpose flour, and coconut milk, inspired by Vietnamese bánh xèo, makes the batter for the egg patties; they are subtly flavored with kala namak, fenugreek, and white pepper to form a perfect complement for the sausage.
A slow cook in an egg ring followed by a quick fry makes the 'eggs' fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside—a superior solution to tofu, which never quite has the right texture.
This is a delicious, filling option for a weekend breakfast or breakfast-for-dinner; or, make the TVP patties and 'egg' batter the night before and fry them in the morning for a quick breakfast option.
Recipe under the cut!
Patreon | Tip jar
Makes 6-8 small sandwiches.
Ingredients:
English muffins, buns, bagels, or rolls
Hollandaise sauce (optional)
Tomato, tempeh, avocado, spinach, and/or hot sauce as desired
For the sausage patties:
1 cup TVP
1 cup water
1 tsp vegetarian beef stock concentrate or beef pho seasoning
1 1/2 Tbsp ground dried shiitake mushrooms
2 Tbsp total fresh minced sage, rosemary, and thyme, or 2 tsp dried
1 1/2 tsp onion powder
1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp sumac (optional)
1/2 tsp fennel seeds, toasted and ground
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp black peppercorns, toasted and ground
5 cloves, toasted and ground
Large pinch MSG (optional)
1/4 cup vegan mayo (substitute any neutral oil)
1 Tbsp aged soy sauce (substitute any soy sauce)
1 Tbsp vegetarian oyster sauce
1 Tbsp Caribbean burnt sugar (or substitute molasses)
1-2 Tbsp maple syrup or brown sugar
1/2 tsp liquid smoke
2 Tbsp ground flaxseed
1/4 cup (30g) chickpea flour (or all-purpose flour)
2 Tbsp potato starch (if needed)
1 Tbsp cooking oil, to fry
You could also make these patties with Impossible or Beyond ground beef. Use 2 cups (350g) ground beef; omit the water and stock concentrate; halve the soy sauce, oyster sauce, burnt sugar, and liquid smoke.
For the egg patties:
1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp (60g) white rice flour
3 Tbsp (22.5g) all-purpose flour (substitute more rice flour for a gluten-free version)
1 tsp ground turmeric
About 1 1/4 cup (295mL) coconut milk (canned or boxed; the kind for cooking, not drinking)
1/4 tsp kala namak (black salt), or substitute table salt
1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds, toasted and ground (optional)
1/4 tsp white peppercorns, toasted and ground (optional)
Cooking oil, to fry
Instructions:
For the egg patties:
1. Whisk all ingredients except coconut milk together in a medium mixing bowl.
2. Add coconut milk while stirring until a batter forms, about the consistency of pancake batter. It should be thin enough to flow, but thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.
3. Cover and allow to rest at room temperature while you prepare the TVP patties.
For the TVP patties:
1. If using whole spices: toast each spice for a few minutes in a dry skillet on medium heat until very fragrant. Remove skillet from heat and toast ground spices, stirring constantly, for 30 seconds. Grind all spices in a mortar and pestle or in a spice mill.
2. Whisk 1 tsp of vegetarian beef stock concentrate with 1 cup of just-boiled water in a large bowl until just combined. Add spices, soy sauce, oyster sauce, maple syrup, burnt sugar, maple syrup, liquid smoke, and TVP and mix well. Allow TVP to rehydrate for about 10 minutes.
3. Stir in herbs, flaxseed, and flour and mix until well-combined. Add breadcrumbs 1/4 cup at a time until patties hold together.
4. Form TVP mixture into patties about 4" in diameter (or as desired) and place on a plate. Refrigerate for about 10 minutes to allow to set.
To cook:
1. Heat a cast-iron or nonstick pan on medium-high with a couple teaspoons of oil. Place egg rings (or mason jar rings) in the pan, and pour enough batter in each one to make a patty about 1/2" (1cm) thick. Allow to brown for a minute or two.
2. Turn the heat down to low and continue cooking until the top of the egg patties have mostly solidified and are a shade darker.
3. Carefully flip each patty and remove the egg ring. Pour another couple teaspoons of oil in the pan and return the heat to medium-high. Fry, flipping if necessary, until each side of the patty is golden-brown and crispy.
4. Meanwhile, heat a Tbsp of oil in another large skillet on medium-low. Place patties in the skillet and flatten gently with the back of a spatula. Allow to cook for about 5 minutes on each side, until browned, crispy, and cooked through.
5. Assemble breakfast sandwiches with TVP patties, egg patties, and vegetables and sauces of your choice. Serve warm.

saltburn and lo real maravilloso
bare with me.
lo real maravilloso, in its direct translation, means "the marvelous real." in english language, this is more commonly said as "magical reality." magical reality is (arguably) a genre of fiction.
lo real maravilloso is a genre which defies definition. it is the inexplicable, the absurd, the ironic, the whimsical, the manifestation of dream and abstraction. lo real maravilloso is also the mundane. if this is confusing, that's entirely understandable. let me quote alberto rios; "first things first. nothing so important and nothing at all unimportant." this is the essence of magical realism. the absurd and unbelievable in a constant dance with the mundane, creating nothing so important and nothing at all unimportant.
to quote un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes (a very old man with enormous wings) by gabriel garcía márquez, "his huge buzzard wings, dirty and half-plucked, were forever entangled in the mud. they looked at him so long and so closely that pelayo and elisenda very soon overcame their surprise and in the end found him familiar." in the story about un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes, the absurd and unbelievable (a winged man crashing to the earth) becomes the mundane (the winged man is flightless, and those that found him are quickly annoyed by his pathetic presence). a winged man becomes nothing so important, and the drag of every-day life is nothing at all unimportant.
now, saltburn. i'm fascinated by emerald fennell's choice of using the aristocratic english as her metaphor for the untouchable. in a lot of ways, i'm grateful this is what she chose. while the ultimate inspiration for saltburn was less the materialistic class commentary that it came to be, the aristocracy becomes so many things throughout the movie. what i wanted to talk about is how the aristocracy, the cattons, are lo real maravilloso. the essay i quoted before by alberto rios is spectacular, because it delves into not just the ironic nature of magical realism, but the rhetoric, as well; what it means to think we understand something, how language deludes us into believing we know something, how our own reality is mistaken for reality itself. saltburn and the cattons live in their own reality, which to the outsider, is absurdity. when watching the film, what we find ourselves thinking throughout it is essential to understanding the rhetoric of the movie.
when we see the grandeur and wealth and think how impractical, how unreal, how hilarious. the humor that saltburn taps into is near-identical to the core of magical realistic irony. "to use classical terminology, tone so often derives from the delivery of the narrative as litotes—understatement—in the middle of hyperbole-- overstatement. If it is not humor, then it comes off as flatness of treatment, non-reactivity, deadpan almost, which is the great comedian’s trick..." (rios). think back to the casualty of the cattons' absurdity. the sincerity in which elspeth delivers the most appalling, unreal anecdotes and additions. magical realism places culture, sincerity, normativity uncomfortably close to what we could hardly fathom. a winged man falling from the sky, kept in the chicken coup because it is quickly understood that he is hideous. finding your winged son dead in the middle of an elaborate maze, sprawled out beneath a minotaur statue, and the knowledge that lunch is about to begin.
the longer we experience the world emerald has created, the more we understand the reality in which the cattons live, the more we find it familiar. the absurdity is forgotten, until it's once again realized, until it's once again forgotten. this is the act of interacting realities; ours, and then another, and then back to ours. what's so fun about exploring wealth is this clashing of reality. believing that it's so absurd to be so rich, then succumbing to the normativity of richness, then once again finding yourself laughing at the idea of it. "what do you mean it's almost lunch? how could you say that? your son is dead. and beyond that, he's dead in the middle of a maze. he's dead in the middle of your estate maze, with your estate statues and your 179 bedrooms, one of them being the king's." and when lunch begins, we're dragged back into foreign reality. we feel the grief that pollutes the air, pulls at each of the cattons. we understand that our reality is not reality, nor is their reality. we're submerged in the tone of the film, the tone of the writing. a well-written character is a character who has their own reality; not that they're right or wrong, but that they are.
there is also the clashing of culture. the aristocracy is more familiar to the english. the emotional repression visualized throughout the movie is more familiar to the english. the culture of british boarding school is more familiar to the english. the longer we experience, the longer we stare at the unreasonable, the more familiar it becomes. our reality is not reality. we stand amidst billions of others, who have millions of preconceived notions, derived from millions of alternate cultures, experienced through thousands of languages, interacting with another billion people. what this all boils down to is how little we understand.
how does oliver interact with this foreign reality? how does farleigh? how are felix and venetia interacting with each other, as well as this life that so little experience? how do we understand it? how do we react to it? how do we react to the sex throughout the movie, which exist in its own absurdly real world? at what point in watching saltburn did you forget how stupid it was? at what point did you forget that having a maze in your backyard is ridiculous? having gargoyles? having footmen? having 200-person parties in your own house? at what point did you lose yourself in this foreign reality, and when did you remember that it's all ridiculous? have you remembered? have you realized that the sex was absurd? have you realized that felix catton is absurd? have you realized that oliver is blind to the absurdity as well? hm. hmmm.

I have a question, love!
What is your favorite tea?
For me, I've been drinking the classic earl grey with a little milk and sugar 🥰
**crests fingers** my favourite kind of question. 🤭 Earl grey is lovely!!! And surprisingly not in my collection. Mental note, I must add it!!
One of my great daily pleasures is my tea. I favour loose tea and, controversially, not normal tea with milk and all that. It's nice, but I like to think of my teas like potions. Come with me for a little tour of my non-seasonal leaves!!!
My ✨favourite✨ if I had to pick one would be Linden Flower. The lovely @lokischambermaid introduced me to it when I was at hers and I've loved it ever since.
Lemon & Ginger - A classic, especially over the winter months.
Pure Ginger- I like this because I can add it to any of the others, usually nettle.
Nettle - Good for iron, but taste rating 4/10. Makes me feel very healthy and a nice alternative to green tea.
Linden flower- A less sickly alternative to chamomile. I usually have it after a stressful day at work (I don't drink, this is my sub🤣) and it works a treat. It's so delicious and delicate.
Jasmine green tea - as stated. I usually have this in the morning.
Relax - A lovely bedtime tea with linden, fennel, oat straw(??) and a bunch of other things.
Spearmint- I used to drink this all the time when I had bad skin and recently got back into it. It's supposed to be good for that AND it's absolutely yummy. Accept no peppermint substitutes.
Covent Garden blend- A floraly dark tea. It's nice for a caffiene hit, but generally I don't drink tea for that. Tasty, though!
Liquorice and Peppermint - This is a really nice sweet tea. Good if you're skipping desert. It's also very warming. I really like it, I need to get more actually.

Big Bug Appreciation Post! (1/2)
For anyone who’s been on my blog, or has interacted with me, it’s no surprise I’m a bug enthusiast. But I don’t think I’ve ever made an official bug appreciation post, and there are a lot of bugs in my state that I think are super neat, so I wanted to briefly talk about them here. Not all of them will be insects though.
Unfortunately, I won’t be putting in any isopods or roaches because my state doesn’t have a whole lot of those guys that I would consider “particularly special.” But just note that I do appreciate isopods and roaches, and think that they have a great impact on their natural environments.
Anyway, onto the bugs!
Blue-Winged Wasp
These babes usually hang out in the dog fennel near my yard, and I think they’re very pretty wasps. Their wings are an iridescent blue (hence the name), and their yellow spots are quite cute. They're also relatively chill, so you can stand pretty close to them and they wouldn’t care.
2. Common Paper Wasp
They’re everywhere, but I’d be lying if I said they weren’t pretty either. I think that they have a really neat color palette and super cool pattern to them. I’ve had personal experience with them, and I’ve always made sure that when I went on my balcony, that I didn’t present as a threat to them. Overall, I enjoyed sitting with these pretty critters.
3. Giant Leopard Moth
They look like snow leopards! Ironically enough, similar to how snow leopards are closely related to tigers, leopard moths are closely related to tiger moths (in fact, they’re in the same family). I raised one of these guys. His name was Napoleon, and he was the fanciest little guy 🩵.
4. Amber Snail
It’s usually stated online that amber snails are a pretty rare species. So I think it was pretty neat how I once found five or six on my mom’s calla lilies. They’re very tiny and very adorable, ‘nuff said.
5. Golden Sill Orb Weaver
A huge species of orb weaver that I think is absolutely gorgeous. These gals can get big, and I mean BIG. But no matter the size, it’s always a treat to see them during walks into the woods.
6. Agapostemon Sweat Bee
Agapostemon is actually just a genus of sweat bee, and I’ve personally come across at least two species. All I really need to say about these guys is that they’re metallic green bees, and the ones that live near my house are surprisingly mega chill (I still wouldn’t hold one tho lol).
7. Bee Fly
Maybe not as cute as their Japanese relatives, but they’re still whimsical little fairy creatures that I would absolutely pet in a heartbeat (if given the chance).
8. Flatback Millipede
I just wanted to bring up how metal I think these guys are. 10/10, absolutely fire little guys 🔥🔥🔥.
9. Eastern Pondhawk
They’re everywhere in the local pond and I love them. They’re one of my favorite examples of dimorphism because of how cool the females look (they’re the green ones). But sometimes it can be hard to distinguish a male and a female because younger males are more green. Still, they’re cool bugs.
10. Violet Dancer
In my opinion, one of the prettiest species of damselflies. I’ve encountered one of these before (at a swamp). They’re just as vibrant as in the pictures 💜.
11. Ebony Jewelwing
Another beautiful damselfly! This time, on a larger scale. These can also be found in swamps, and their metallic green color is super cool.
12. Swallowtails (Just in General)
(Pipevine Swallowtail in the picture)
Swallowtails are my state’s official butterfly, and the reason for that is pretty simple: They’re literally everywhere. The most common is the Eastern Tiger, but there are other species, such as: The Black Swallowtail, Zebra Swallowtail, Pipevine Swallowtail, and probably even more. Another neat thing about them is that they’re in the same family as the world’s largest butterfly species: The Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing. So there’s some fun lil trivia for ya 👍.
13. Golden Northern Bumblebee
They’re very friend-shaped, and also very big. In fact, some of them can get bigger than carpenter bees. They don’t visit very often, but I really like them.
14. Variegated Fritillary
A very close relative of the gulf fritillary. In fact, I found caterpillars of both species eating passion vine together.
You can usually tell them apart pretty easily since Variegated caterpillars are lined with white dots. Also, fun fact: Their spines are non-stinging and completely harmless in general.
15. Larger Elm Leaf Beetle
Super friend-shaped, and extremely lightweight (you will barely feel them on your hand). They're pretty easy to handle since they’re very docile. But they’re considered pests to certain plants, so they’re not very liked by gardeners.
16. Golden Tortoise Beetle
Also friend-shaped, but very tiny and super skittish. One really interesting thing about them is that their larvae use their own feces as a shield. So, yeah, that’s a thing that they do.
17. Imperial Moth
A close relative of the Luna Moth (they’re in the same family). They might not be the most extravagant moths, but they have a rustic charm to them, and they remind me of bananas. Also, they’re fluffy, so they’re automatically cute.
18. Pink-Striped Oakworm Moth
A much smaller relative of the Luna Moth (also in the same family). These babes are nocturnal and absolutely adorable.
19. Antlion
Despite being shaped like a damselfly, these fellas are more closely related to lacewings and mantidflies. You may recognize their name, and that’s because the most notable thing about antlions is their larvae (also called “doodlebugs”).
Y’know, these silly lil guys. The ones that make pit traps to eat their favorite food: Ants. They're funky. I love them.
20. Spring Fishfly
I just think they’re cool. They come from water.
21. Woolly Apple Aphid
Adorable, fluffy, whimsical fairy creatures. I had the pleasure of holding one once. You can’t even feel them on your finger.
22. Red Velvet Ant/ Cow Killer
Despite her name, she’s not actually an ant. She’s a type of wasp in the family Mutilidae, where females are wingless. These wasps (specifically the males) are called “cow killers” because of a myth that said their stings were so powerful, they could kill a cow. This isn’t true tho.
23. Crane Fly
They look like giant mosquitoes, but fear not! They won’t hurt you! In fact, one of their nicknames is “mosquito eater.” But they don’t actually eat mosquitoes. At least, the adults don’t. They don’t even have the proper mouthparts to do that. Instead, Crane Flies feed on nectar, which makes them minor pollinators. So while they can get everywhere once they spawn, they’re not actually that big of a problem. And they’re super frail, so please be gentle if you want to hold them🤎.
24. Two-Spotted Longhorn Bee
Absolutely adorable! They don’t visit very often, but when they do, they like to visit the sage in the garden. I usually find them frequently the same plants as the Leafcutter bees.
25. Giant Water Bug
One of the coolest dudes ever. You’ll always find them anywhere wet, but please know that they can get BIG. They won’t charge after you, but they will bite if they feel threatened, and it will hurt. I’ve encountered these funky guys before, and I just admire them from a good distance.
26. Promachus Robber Flies
Promachus is also just a genus of robber fly (I don’t know how many species live in my state tho). I just think they look cool. And they’re good for pest control 👍.
27. Common Checkered Skipper
Cute little babies that are slightly blue. I have one in my bug collection.
28. Long-Tailed Skipper
Another cute little baby. And also blue! These things are pretty common in the garden, and I’m always happy to see them.
Reached the image count limit. I’ll post the second part in a bit.

the vegetable filling recipe BTW. this is adapted from a recipe i looked at and then realized there was almost no seasoning beyond half a tablespoon of turmeric and a choice of vegetables i didnt like (just celery, potatoes, and carrots). based mostly around what we had in the house. idk i eyeball shit i dont have any exact measurements or anything
ingredience
3 shallots
1 carrot (small)
bit of cabbage (like maybe half a cup?)
some cauliflower (like 4 pieces i think. chopped up)
3 cloves of garlic
2 potatoes
half cup of frozen peas
SEASONINGS: (all one line so this isn't super long + because i just eyeballed it) hot curry powder, turmeric, white pepper, coriander, ground mustard, fennel seeds, mustard seeds, chili powder, ginger (only the littlest kiss of it)
hot chili sesame oil
1/2 cup vegetable stock
directions
nothing wrong with me
ok sorry. chop up all your vegetables. potatoes should be diced into little cubes.
take a cast iron, cover bottom of the pan in sesame oil
start frying all the vegetables except the potatoes and peas. do this for around 5 minutes/until onions are browned
add in potatoes + all your seasonings, stir around with your spatula a bit, let it keep cooking for a few minutes
add in the vegetable stock and peas. let that cook for around 10 minutes, stir around with your spatula every once in a while
this is about where i had to stop due to my puff pastry sheets being moldy. SAD!

Ok I dunno if it's just me being sensitive to this or not but I'm growing more and more uncomfortable with all these 'thriller' movies about 'mutual obsession' between two ppl of the same gender (killing eve, saltburn, etc etc). Like, there are other elements to appreciate and critique in these films of course but I'm growing more and more uneasy at how flippantly some of these filmmakers, most often not gay ofc, just bring back the old 'unhinged gay ppl and their narcissistic lust' trope with no new insight and without even acknowledging the impact that queerness has on these relationships. The only good example of the subgenre I can think of is Interview with a vampire bc its ACTUALLY for once saying something about how masculinity, patriarchy and racism intersect and create this unhealthy vacuum for Louis. Most of the time it feels like they just made the characters gay for shits and giggles or to appeal to a younger queerer audience or for a cheap 'shock' factor (Ew! The disgusting brave homosexual sex scene that will shock everyone!) Like I'm not saying all gay characters should be saints, I'm just saying that the way these stories are written seems performative at best and exploitative at worst, and I wonder if I'm the only one who thinks that.
you’re right that iwtv does the homoerotic toxic codependent obsession trope best out of the media you listed, but i will be honest i love fucked up homoerotic codependency even when it’s exploitative im not gonna lie! iirc killing eve s1 was genuinely good and then it went downhill after pwb left (which is ironic bc she usually does nothing for me), so we might just have different tastes. and obviously a trope is only as good as its execution, it has to be delivered well thru good writing, a trope is not good or bad in and of itself, etc. and saltburn is a particularly egregious example not because it’s homophobic, but because it’s just so fucking bad at communicating anything meaningful. it’s like the perfect example of what i see ppl complain abt wrt new publishing trends of marketing books via tropes exclusively (not that i can speak to this in any way bc that’s not the kind of literature i read or seek out), where it’s literally just an amalgamation of tropes with nothing beneath the facade. which is really what I take issue w moreso than the tropes themselves. and if you described this movie exclusively based on the tropes it employs, i actually think it would seem incredibly appealing to many ppl, which i believe is exactly what ms fennel was banking on.
