Aaaaah the letter is written in French! Im so happy with the amount of work and attention they put into this anime
Let’s see what’s written on the letter.....
“A l’attention du Vicomte Albert de Morcef
Cher Vicomte,
D’heureuses circonstances me permettent d’avoir en ma possession des places de premier choix pour l’opéra de ce soir. Si tu n’a pas d’autres engagements, voudrais-tu me faire l’honneur d’être mon invité ? La présence de ta fiancée est bien ententue recommandée.
Très cordialement,
Le Comte de Monte-Christo”
AAAAH SO MANY THINGS TO TALK ABOUT
1) IM HAVING A STROKE THE COUNT IS USING “TU” FOR ALBERT
2) The Count has a pretty handwriting
3) The play is called “Robert The Devil” lmao
4) The Count got these tickets thanks to “fortunate circumstances” meaning he probably blackmailed or killed someone

“Wait and hold on to hope” were words Edmond originally gave to Mercedes, his lover
But he also gave these words to Albert.......

It’s really interesting how the demon first started referring to Albert as ‘young boy’ but in the last seven episodes he calls him ‘our pure soul’
He always highlights Albert’s purity and naivety in the way he talks about him
And the fact he used ‘our’ and not ‘this pure soul’ makes me think the demon feels some sort of (twisted) affection for him. Or he just loves to make him suffer and laugh at his misery
Only the Count calls Albert by his first name

Its so interesting that the Count’s first reaction to Villefort pointing a gun at Albert is to “call Gankutsuou” to protect him
Like dude.... its actually in your best interest if Albert dies so why did you get so angry
Your human side is showing

On the meaning of hand-holding in Gankutsuou ep15
One of the most interesting things in Gankutsuou is how the writers mixed a futuristic setting with 1700-1800 french nobility’s customs and etiquette
So we have a story taking place in Paris, 5050, but people still write letters and have duels
Now I’m sure this is not what the writers intended but the hand-holding scene in ep15 reminded me of Don Juan
Specifically, the scene where he meets up with his debt collector, Mr Dimanche
Don Juan being Don Juan, he obviously doesn’t want to pay his debts, and tries to change the topic of the conversation. First, he asks Mr Dimanche how his family is doing. Then, he asks him to touch his hand
I don’t have the book on me but from what I remember from the editor’s notes, if you were a man and you touched another man’s hand, it was a huge deal. It was a way to strengthen/reaffirm your friendship.
Did Albert know about this tradition? Or did he interpret it as a romantic gesture? There’s no way to tell. But we do know something:
He was really flattered
Whether he knew about this tradition or not, the following scenes are still heartbreaking. As he watch the Count walking away from him, he can only shout ‘Count! I thought we would only trust each other from now on!’
