Ferrari 3.2 Mondial Cabriolet, 1985. The date is June 4, 1988 and Pope John Paul II is visiting Fiorano, Italy and Maranello, home of the prancing horse brand. At this time Enzo Ferrari is still alive but too ill to meet with the Pope though they did speak on the phone. The Mondial Cabriolet was made between 1983 and 1989 in 3.0 and 3.2 litre versions. It remains the only mid-engined supercar to be offered with 4 seats and a fully convertible roof

Jaguar XJR-S V12 ("timber!").
When the Jaguar XJR-S was launched in August 1988, Jaguar was riding the crest of a reputational wave, having just claimed its 6th Le Mans victory and, in 1987, won the World Sportscar Championship. It was a genuinely bespoke model produced by Jaguar Sport - a high-performance wing jointly owned by Jaguar and the Tom Walkinshaw Racing Group. Initially powered by a 5.3-litre V12, the engine was upgraded in 1989 to a bespoke 6.0-litre unit with Zytek fuel injection. It was good for 334 bhp and 160 mph.Boasting a new forged steel crankshaft, forged alloy pistons, modified air intake and a dual exhaust system, the engine was unique to the XJR-S and was only phased out once Jaguar introduced its own 6.0-litre V12.The XJR-S proved to be an immediate winner with contemporary journalists. In a Motor Sport magazine group test, the Jaguar handed out a humiliating spanking to a Porsche 928 GT, a BMW 850i and a Ferrari Mondial T – no mean feat. While the XJR-S may have looked pretty much like a standard Jaguar XJR coupé, virtually every mechanical part was unique. Each car left the factory as a hand-built unit from Jaguar Sport’s manufacturing facility at Bloxham, which had attained legendary status as the skunk-works unit that built the seminal XJ220.

Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider, 1954. The wreckage of a rare Ferrari has sold at auction for $1.875 million. The car was raced during the 1950 and passed through a number of owners until the mid 1960s when it was crashed and burned. Fast forward 60 years and what's left of one of only 13 Mondial Spiders ever made has crossed the block at RM Sotheby’s Monterey Car Week auction. The intentions of the new owner are unclear, they could spend several millions more to have the car restored or keep the wreak as is for its historical significance. Below is an intact Ferrari 500 Mondial Spyder

Ferrari Mondial QV
Designed by Leonardo Fioravanti of Pininfarina, the Mondial entered the market in 1980. Available as either a 2+2 coupé or a cabriolet, it replaced the four-seater Ferrari 308GT4 enabling the Italian firm to continue to market the two-seater 308GTB/GTS, the car that donated its chassis and drivetrain to the Mondial.Carrozzeria Scaglietti supplied and built the bodywork, a combination of steel and aluminium panels that are fixed to a space-frame chassis. The result is a car that’s as light and stiff as it is beautiful and one that handles exceptionally well.Front and rear subframes hold the major mechanical assemblies and while the 3.0-litre V8 engine might be able to trace its roots straight back to the V6 Dino engine of 1968, it still produces 214bhp and 179lb/ft of torque, enough for a 0-60mph time of around eight seconds. The Mondial is one of the last Ferraris to benefit from the reduced maintenance costs that are the byproduct of what is analogue, old school engineering, making it popular with knowledgeable enthusiasts who prefer to do their own servicing.
