Fanfiction Writer's Appreciation Day #2:

The Sun Swings East by @feybarn

Over and over, Obi-Wan woke up and wished he hadn't. Palpatine wouldn't stop until Obi-Wan had Fallen, wouldn't stop until Obi-Wan gave Palpatine a shattered galaxy in payment for his release.

I was consumed by the theme for this book - I wanted so bad to bring the sunrise motif into it, and I also wanted to bring back the inset mirror design. I leaned a lot harder into the hexagon shapes on this one too, and I stole the work printer for color printing for a steadily progressing sunrise.

I got super lucky that I had 4 colors of Colibri bookcloth I was able to layer to create the effect on the cover, with the sun coming over the eastern horizon. And then of course I had to give it some gradient endbands and marbled endpapers to match!

I was also very lucky to be allowed to include art by @wrennette and @lucife56 in this copy, as well as a bonus "All Those Little Things" codexwan chaser. Thank you to all of you - KJ_Feybarn, wrennette, lucife56 - all of your beautiful creations and how they interact is what makes fandom such a fantastic place. But since it is FFWAD - thank you KJ_Feybarn, for your striking and inspiring writing!

Fantasy Fic Recs

I’m back with more fic recs. I know I’ve done a rec list for fantasy fics before, but just like the Sith Obi-Wan fic recs, I wanted to do more because it’s been a hot minute!

Ships will vary! I’ll be sure to let you know what fics have what ships though, so don’t worry!

Also, these recs don’t contain like...modern fantasy recs, but I’ll probably do another list for those tbh, probably one for like...in-world fantasy...if that’s what I should call it....

There's a darkness growing in Mandalore and a people with no trust for outsiders that Obi-wan wants to help but first he has to convince Cody to trust him. Or: 11 times Obi-wan and Cody meet, with varying degrees of success.

Peace in the Realm - Rosawyn When young Lord Anakin's elopement threatens the fragile peace of the entire kingdom, Lord Obi Wan and Prince Codex must find a way to prevent his impulsive decision from toppling everything into chaos.  With threats of war looming on their borders and petty nobles squabbling in Obi Wan's own duchy, things are feeling a lot less stable.  And that's all before the assassination.

There’s an injured animal in the forest, he can hear the sounds from the dense underbrush of the woods that surround his home, and it's accompanied by the sound of hunting dogs. Looking for a dragon, as rare as they were, was impossible, especially with the nagas roaming around. He thought he caught sight of something other than a harpy, with scales along the neck, but the shaded glasses, and squirming hat revealed the creature as a gorgon. He sighed, sinking further into the seat. His wings recoiled from the dusty ground, shaking themselves to clean. It ended up just leaving them covered in more grime, something he would have to deal with later. The scales were more important now, he needed to find a dragon… or someone who knew one. His informant was supposed to meet him an hour ago.

PROMPT REQUEST! Did you know I almost forgot that you were doing this today? How tragic (for me) would that have been if I hadn't remembered? So, my first prompt. Jango/Obi-Wan: Obi-Wan is having a nice, easy mission that somehow hasn't gone wrong yet when he stumbles on a half-dead Jango. Obi-Wan being the helpful person he is gives aid. Cue reverse Florence Nightingale effect where Jango falls in love with the person who nursed him to health (and possibly isn't willing to let said person go.)

"K'atini," a voice comes to him as he wakes up and he relaxes almost immediately at the sound of Mando'a. Jango tried to speak and choked instead, gentle hands hurrying to help him sit up, a cup pressed against his lips. He took a few sips, knowing that there was no reason to poison him when he was already so week. Water, just water. And the soft voice, letting him know he'd be okay in fluent Mando'a. The next time he woke, the voice was back, and the hands, they were gently wiping him down and it felt so nice to just lie there and be taken care of he didn't try to make a noise.

It went on like that, Jango too tired to even open his eyes, for what seemed like days. He felt safe the whole time, as if the person taking care of him--and he was sure it was just one person--was projecting comfort. He hadn't felt like this since...not since before Jaster had died. Eventually, he could not keep putting off looking at this person, putting a face and name to them in his mind, one that might betray him. "Hello there," the voice said, and a figure moved into his line of sight. A human or near-human, masculine, wearing a casual tunic. They helped Jango sit up, drink water, as he had many times before, but this time he was offered food as well. Bland ration bars, what he would expect to find deep in the Republic, not on the Outer Rim world he last remembered being on. His caretaker chuckled. "I know, they're not great. But it was what I had on the ship that would be easy on your system." He chewed through as much as he could stomach, knowing he must need the calories, before addressing the tauntaun in the room, as much as he didn't want to. "Who are you?" "I'm Obi-Wan Kenobi," the name, thankfully or not, meant nothing to Jango. "I was on my way back to the spaceport when I came across you. I brought you back to my ship instead of dropping you at the local hospital because, well, someone running around in full beskar'gam out here probably isn't too fond of the authorities. Might I ask your name? You didn't have any identification on you." They were smart enough to answer his next questions, at least, even if they just created more. He studied Obi-Wan, the soft fall of their hair, the gentle eyes, the moderately attractive features made all the more interesting by his attitude and smooth Mando'a. Could he really trust this Obi-Wan? Could he not, when it was clear they had spent a lot of their time, and probably no few resources, on him? "What do you want me for?" Fixed up, he'd be a decent enough slave, though past his prime for playing the attractive bodyguard for some sleemo who cared more about impressions than actual safety. But most wouldn't bother. Hell, leaving him stripped down and taking his armor and weapons would be worth about as much as he'd be, anymore. "...Nothing? I know, it's odd," they gave a wry smile, a look that struck Jango for how perfect it was on his face, "but...something told me I shouldn't just leave you there. Perhaps the Manda called to me." "Jango," he said, finally. "Jango Fett." Obi-Wan blinked, frowned, and Jango could see the exact moment that the name registered. "...Truly?" He barked out a laugh, then stopped with a grimace, realizing he wasn't quite up to that, yet. "It doesn't mean anything, anymore, unless you keep up with bounty hunter news." "Only vaguely, I'm afraid." "I wasn't expecting more." He looked himself over, shifting here and there to get a feel for how he's recovering. A datapad appeared in Obi-Wan's hand, held out to him. "This is all your scans and what I did to heal you up." Jango took it with interest, finding thorough notes. "So you can continue treating yourself." Jango stared harder at the notes, the proof that the caring hands and words had existed in some way. "Kicking me out so soon?" "Oh, no! I simply assumed that's what you would want. As opposed to staying here with a stranger." "Not such a stranger, are you, Obi-Wan? Considering the state you've seen me in?" He was gifted with a laugh in return, which seemed to brighten the whole room. Altogether, he stayed for five more days. He thought he wasn't the only one finding reasons for his delay. When he left, he clad himself in beskar'gam that Obi-Wan had expertly cleaned and fixed. But back in his ship, alone, even the armor didn't bring him comfort. He missed Obi-Wan. If Jango had been a less talented bounty hunter, he may have never found Obi-Wan again. Yet, he had long ago learned to memorize all the information he could and to find people even after they'd disappeared into the depths of the galaxy. Finding out that Obi-Wan was a Jedi did not change his mind, not when they had spent weeks together with not a single sign of that wretched culture. Not when he knew that Obi-Wan had known who he was, but had never stopped helping him. He'd save him, as Obi-Wan had saved him.

Narrowing it down is incredibly difficult, when practically every single one of those titles is making me scream with delight... But for the WIP ask game: That Fucking Chess Dinner.

Ahhhhh, yes. I don't have much of this written at all, and keep trying to rewrite what I DO have, but the basic idea is that over the course of some kind of diplomatic dinner Obi-Wan realises that Palpatine is the Sith Lord, and at the same time realises that Palpatine knows he knows.

If he looked like he was going to leave and alert the Jedi then Palpatine would kill him. If he tried to arrest the Chancellor here, or did anything else to raise suspicion then Palpatine would kill him and everyone else in the room. And if he did nothing then, Force assured, eventually Palpatine would kill everyone.

Encrypted Channel by qigiined (@deniigi) - Do you want OT-era Rexwalker, but infinitely more stupid despite theoretically being too old for this shit? Do you want it in chatfic format? Do you want Vader to be following Rex around (metaphorically) with puppy eyes (less metaphorically) and being upset that Rex doesn't want to get with him after all the many crimes? Yes. You do.

A Star to Steer By by dogmatix, norcumi (@dogmatix, @norcumii) - I have reread this so many times. I'm not even in Stargate fandom, and yet this crossover verse owns me. (Still thinking about how Ventress and Narec and the entire Rattatak situation might have gone down ngl.)

Realign the Stars by CrystalRainsWriting, TerinAngel (@terinangel) - afaik this is discontinued but it's so good and shaped a lot of my early approach to SW time travel fic.

Of Queens, Knights, and Pawns by chancecraz (@chancecraz) - Do you love Leia? Do you love hypercompetent future Leia who's cranky about being nineteen again because nobody takes her seriously? Read this.

Shifting Sands also by chancecraz - still a hypercompetent Leia, but further back and Still Old and also the most recent chapter was 65,000 words.

Don't Look Back by acuteneurosis (@this-acuteneurosis) - another Leia time-travel, this one focusing very heavily on political maneuvering and things like trade routes. We got economics and supply route fic.

Force of Many Sights by DAsObiQuiet - There's something magical about fics that go into such detail about the time and effort that therapy, especially therapy for Darth Vader, takes.

Viridescent Skies by DarthSnug (themikeymonster) (@themikeymonster) - listen I just really love age/role swaps and this is a REALLY good one.

Living in Borrowed Time by smug_albatross (@scribbling-albatross) - Another one of those fics that I'd say really shaped my early approach to characters of this era. The handling of Rex and Ahsoka is magnificent, honestly, and we all know I love a good time travel plot.

Senator Obi-Wan AU by BeanieBaby - incredibly fun. Yes there's Senator Kenobi, but there's also Fox being pursued by two different Jedi (Kit and Quin), a variety of topsy-turvy character interactions that make sense in a funhouse mirror sense (e.g. Obi-Wan preferring blasters to sabers because he didn't grow up with the Jedi), and Anakin repeatedly almost kills Palpatine by accident.

Soft Wars by Project0506 (@thefoundationproject) - no explanation needed. Is cute.

Dominoes by meridianpony (@meridiansdominoes) - we don't need to go over my intense love of time-travel fics again. really.

Sith Lord Swell by AMournfulHowlInTheNight (has a blog but not for fandom stuff) - Luke falls back in time and decides to handle it by pretending to be a Sith Lord. It works (somehow).
