Hi, I love your hetalia stuff, and all your headcanons, especially everything with Canada! I was wondering- Have you ever listened to the song 'War Between Brothers' by Heather Dale? It's very emotional, and to my mind really fits the Sevens Years War- Revolutionary War- War of 1812 cycle with the FACE family. Anyway I always enjoys seeing your posts!
Hi! First of all, thank you so much for this sweet message, I truly appreciate it. 💖
And no, I really like Heather Dale (some of her songs are among my all-time favourites) but I had never listened to this song in particular, thanks for sharing!
I completely agree with your assessment. First of all, there's this general melancholic, regretful tune – because yeah, while everybody's angry and fighting for what he thinks he's right, what ultimately prevails and is left is the pain of the broken bonds.
Moreover, there are some lines that really make me think of each character, especially in the Arthur–Alfred–Matthew dynamic.
"This one's a father – And this one's a son" – obviously, that's Arthur and Alfred. (I know I always say I see them more like brothers than father and son, but with Arthur being such an older/more mature brother that the lines are quite blurred.)
Then, there's "This one's a bastard – And this one's a king – Both fought for power and what it would bring" which reminds me of the two of them as well (Alfred as the rising "bastard", the one who wasn't supposed to hold that power but who seized it by force. Arthur being the king, at that moment, is instead quite obvious.)
Alfred's and Matthew's dynamic isn't left aside, either. The stanza "These two were blinded – By jealousy's flame – One pointing fingers, the other to blame – One lived in rage and the other in shame – But which was the better – Of what they became?" is all about them in those moments. I love how everything can be applied to both of them, too. (Shame apart. Shame belongs more to Matthew, not to Alfred – even so, he can feel shame as well in some moments.) Two brothers who are so different yet in some ways more alike than they would like to admit. Not to mention, that unanswered question... It's such an important part of their conflict as well.
But of course, the two lines that are more impactful are the recurring "Kin laid with kin in the funeral pyre" and the final "But fighting each other, they lost everything". In this story, nobody died. Even so, that fight – for how just it was – ultimately just brought division and pain for everybody involved, so this feels perfectly fitting.
Thanks again for sharing this!

Vilkas x F! Harbinger! Dragonborn! Reader
PART ONE
word count: 4697
triggers: none
summary: Vilkas doesn't believe in love. But his harbinger sure does. Is there anything he can do to get her mind off of being single? Yes. Yes, there is.
prompt: from @writings-of-a-hufflepuff List #2 prompt 61
“I’m sorry…I shouldn’t have done that, you can look after
yourself…I shouldn’t have…I’m sorry.”
preview:
“Two beds.” Vilkas slid the septims to the woman.
“I’m sorry to say we don’t have two beds available, just one.”
Vilkas turned to Y/n, who was half asleep on his arm.
“That will do just fine, do you happen to have an extra fur-”
The woman stared at Y/n, then back to Vilkas.
“You sure you need two?”
Tumblr media
Love had never been very important to Vilkas. Sure, he loved the camaraderie the Companions had, but it wasn't family. Farkas understood family, and how to love, so when Farkas announced his engagement to Feyna, it didn't phase Vilkas.
Though, it was certainly a wake-up call for Y/n, who had been their Harbinger for the past two years since Kodlak had passed on to Sovngarde. And this phased Vilkas.
He watched her smile back at Farkas, but he saw the heartbreak in her eyes. She had always spoken about wanting to be married by now. To be loved by now. And she was watching it slip through her fingertips.
"We'd love it if you all came to our ceremony next week!"
Farkas shouted, pulling Feyna into his side.
Cheers erupted from the Companions, all hoisting mugs of mead toward the couple. Aela then began a speech about Farkas, but Vilkas hadn’t bothered to listen as Y/n’s face did not match her actions.
"Y/n?"
Vilkas caught her saddened eyes.
"Are you alright?"
It was the sudden change in her face that shattered her facade of peace.
"Of course, no need to worry Vilkas."
But that did not answer his question, but he knew that she wouldn’t answer him, not in her current state.
"To Farkas!” the others answered, quickly following suit.
And as it turns out, it would be much harder to garner her attention.

It was a quieter day in Whiterun, and Y/n had deemed it her own day off and told the Companions to spend the day as they saw fit.
This only piqued Vilkas’s interest, as he saw his beloved Harbinger don something other than the armor she usually adorned. It was a soft beige tunic, half-tucked into her cloth pants, and with her boots laced up. Even her hair was styled a bit differently, the hairs she usually kept from her face, were now loose and free…
“Where are you off to today, Y/n?”
Vilkas asked, catching her at the front door.
“Vilkas!”
He watched as her body tensed at the sound of his voice. She seemingly missed him standing at the door.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you, I just know that today we are free to take a break from our daily training, and well you seemed dressed up-”
“I’m just going to the market.”
“May I join you?”
Her eyes widened briefly, before returning to her previous facial expression.
“I suppose that would be fine, I just didn’t want to be identified… Just blend in a bit, you know?”
He glanced down at his armor-clad form and met her eyes once more.
“I can change?” He offered, and she laughed.
“You want to join me that badly that the wolf of Jorrvaskr wants to become a man?”
He flushed, as even he didn’t know why he wanted to join her so badly, but he just swallowed and nodded.
“Maybe we can at least get that warpaint off,” she smiled.
“If that would please you of course.”
“Please me?”
He groaned,” Ignore me Y/n. I’ll get civilianized and return to you.”
She just rolled her eyes and set her hand on the sword's hilt strapped to her side.
It wasn’t long until Vilkas returned, hair tied tight, wearing just a tunic and trousers, a sword still strapped to his back. His warpaint had gone, but his icy blues were just as piercing as ever.
“Is this more acceptable?”
And the smile on her face had made all of his hassle worth it.

“Hello Carlotta, how have sales been going?”
“Y/n!”
Carlotta ran to the front of her stall, wrapping her arms around the Harbinger.
“I don’t see you often enough.”
They parted from each other and Y/n’s hand fell to the back of her neck.
“I’m sorry. I’ll try to see you more.”
Carlotta’s eyes fell on Vilkas.
“Oh, I didn’t know you had a beloved.”
The pair's eyes widened, as they both began quickly trying to explain that they were not in fact that.
She gave a knowing smile but said nothing.
“Well then, what would your name be sir?”
“Oh, Vilkas.”
“A quiet one, eh? Just like Mila’s father,” it was a sad smile that graced her lips, and Vilkas knew that it would be extremely rude if he tried to learn about the man.
“He was determined to come with me to see you today.”
“Oh was he?”
The way the women teased him sent chills down his spine, as he was not used to being belittled or put on the spot like this. But he stayed silent, watching the women interact, and watching a side of Y/n he had not yet gotten to see.
“So, no man yet, Y/n?”
“Carlotta!” Y/n hissed, and Vilkas could hear the same pain in her voice as when Farkas announced his wedding.
“Well, it’s been two years of you claiming you’d be wed and-”
Vilkas threw an arm over her shoulder, pulling Y/n closer to himself.
“She’s actually doing quite well despite her goal. She’s very important in my life.”
“Vilkas…”
Carlotta simply nodded, but there was a glimmer in her eye.
“Oh! It seems to me I have a new customer, it was great talking to you Y/n! I hope to see you sooner?”
Y/n sighed but nodded.
“I will speak with you again soon Carlotta.”
And they turned from her stand, but all Vilkas could feel were Y/n’s eyes boring into him.
“What?”
“Why did you stand up for me then?”
She didn’t meet his eyes but simply continued up the stairs back to Jorrvaskr.
“It was only right.”
“She was just teasing.” She paused and met his eyes.
“You didn’t like it.
And she opened her mouth to retort, but seemingly couldn’t find the words.
“Let’s just go home.”
And their market trip seemed to have come to a sudden halt.
But why did he still want to be closer?

"Y/n?"
It was a quiet voice, as he had decided to creep into her room. And there she was slumped over her desk, softly muttering things in her sleep.
Vilkas just chuckled, this was no way for her to sleep.
"C’mon, let's get you to bed-"
"But what about me? Am I not allowed to be happy?"
Vilkas stopped in his tracks, maybe he shouldn't wake her.
"What do you mean Harbingers don't get married?! That's not fair-!"
A tear rolled down her cheek, and Vilkas immediately changed his approach.
"Y/n," he brushed the hair from her face," Y/n, wake up."
Her eyes fluttered open and met his icy blues.
"Vilkas? Why aren't you asleep?"
There was no lace of sleep in those words, she had just sat upright, and he could just feel the tension in her shoulders.
"I wanted to check on you, but then I saw you weren't sleeping well…"
"You didn't hear anything right?"
His voice caught in his throat.
"You did. Please don't tell anyone-"
"You're allowed to love, Y/n. None of us will hold that against you, I won't hold it against you."
"...Can I be honest with you Vilkas?"
"Of course."
"I don't think I'm unlovable, I just think that no man will ever want to marry a woman with that much authority."
Vilkas smiled," There will be someone. It would be impossible not to love you."
He paused for but a moment then continued with," Let's get you to bed."
As soon as she rose from her chair, Vilkas swept her off her feet and carried her toward her bed.
"I could have walked you know."
"Well someone needs to care for you! Might as well be me."
And there was no sparky comment to follow.
___________________
It wasn't strange for Vilkas to keep an eye on everyone’s training. He was one of the members of the Circle, and many of the others would do the same. However, it was strange to Vilkas that he would always keep his eye on one person, Y/n.
She was their newest little whelp who had begun her climb through the ranks, now even outranking himself, as his Harbinger. She had very easily won him over, and he was almost proud of her.
"Hey, Vilkas!"
He was drawn out of his own thoughts by that very same person, and he made his way over to her.
"Yes? What is it?"
"So you know how I’ve been trying to learn how to fight with any weapon right? I've got the bow and short swords down, but I can't get this greatsword. And well, you train whelps with greatswords, so I was hoping you could help me too."
"Yeah, of course just show me what you've got."
She nodded and began swinging at the practice dummy, only laying a couple of solid blows before stopping herself.
"So first of all your stance is all wrong. Move your feet closer together."
"Like this?"
He watched her feet shift slightly, but not to his liking.
"Not like that," he came up behind her, wrapping his hands over hers and correcting her stance with his body.
"You're going to want to put your whole body into it. It'll drive more force through with each blow. So that's why you need a solid footing."
As he spoke, his warm breath tickled her ear.
"Alright, but then how do I take a swing and not leave myself vulnerable?"
"That comes with practice. Which actually," he released her from his arms," Stay here, there might be something I have to help you out."
And Vilkas jogged his way back into Jorrvaskr and tried to ignore Tilma’s complaints as he broke into a sprint when he made his way inside.
“Idiotic child…”
He knew it was stupid, going out of his way to help train his Harbinger, but that didn’t stop him as he grabbed the wooden sword Jergen had given him.
___________________
The toy was slipped out of his grasp.
"I think you're ready for a true sword. Remember Vilkas, a man's strength is not ability, but in his heart," Jergen explained.
"But I'm not strong enough! It's too heavy-"
"You'll grow into it. I know you will."
The large steel blade was placed in his hands.
“You will be ready, and I pray this blade helps you for a lifetime.”
___________________
“Here, let’s start with this.”
“A wooden blade?” Y/n laughed,” Aren’t I a bit advanced for this?”
“This blade has served a young boy very well. It was the way his father trained him. He was a foolish boy, but regardless, this blade was kind to him.”
“This was yours? Did Jergen-”
Vilkas nodded.
“So let’s try this stance again shall we?”

It wasn’t a difficult mission, and it was the first one Y/n had taken on in quite some time. She of course had her jobs as the famous Last Dragonborn, but this one she took up upon her title of Harbinger. Vilkas, of course, volunteered to be her shield-brother to which she accepted.
The mission was simple. There was some monster threatening a small village on the outskirts of Riften, just at the border of Skyrim and Morrowind. Truly no big deal for such experienced warriors as the Harbinger and her wolf.
That was until Y/n was face to face with a rabid werewolf and the oncoming panic attack she had no control over. She froze mid-battle and couldn’t stop the way her body shook, or the way her blade fell from her hands.
Vilkas jumped in and fought the beast in her stead, fending off the wolf from its violent attacks. When the beast fell, Vilkas sighed and turned to her. She had fallen to her knees, and words began to fall from his mouth.
“I’m sorry…I shouldn’t have done that, you can look after yourself…I shouldn’t have…I’m sorry.”
“Vilkas…”
She threw herself into his arms and began to sob.
“I was so scared, I am so scared.”
“I’m here, Y/n. I’m here.”
His hands found themselves tangled within her locks, as her face was buried into his chest. The silence in the wood was only pierced by her sobs as she shook.
“I’m here…” he mused, holding her tighter.
He understood her fear, the curse that came with being a companion was horrid. It happened to be why she never shifted, and why Vilkas found it hard for himself to do so. He was never quite proud of being a beast, but any pride he had was gone when he realized how much she hated the beast.
She let out a sigh and began to try to compose herself.
"I'm okay. You can let me go now."
But Vilkas didn't miss the way her eyes still held sadness and the way her voice wavered just a bit.
"Don’t force yourself to be okay, Y/n. I can be strong for you right now. You can be human."
He watched as the tears came to her eyes again, and he pulled her into himself again. It was a gentle hold, his hands rubbing her back.
Kiss her.
Vilkas shook off the thought. It was not the place nor time to do so. And besides, how could she love a beast like him…
___________________
They had reached the edge of Eastmarch and had planned to stop in Windhelm for the night. Y/n had been very quiet for most of the ride, and Vilkas took this as a sign that he should take the lead for the rest of their trip.
They had handed their horses to the stablemaster and headed toward the city gates. Vilkas had noticed the way that Y/n would lag behind him, almost shuffling her feet.
“You know Y/n, I could just carry you.”
“I’m quite alright Vilkas.”
And yet she still didn’t match his slowed pace, or even look at him while answering his comment.
“Alright, that’s it.”
And he hoisted her up in his arms.
“Vilkas! Vilkas I demand that you put me down this instant! As your harbinger, I-”
“In all due respect, I’m not going to listen to you just this once.” He looked down at her.
“Vilkas-”
“Please, Y/n.”
His voice came out a little too weak, and he prayed she didn’t notice. And she just relented, arms finding their way around his neck and averting her eyes from onlookers, for fear of crippling embarrassment.
He made his way up the steps into Candlehearth Hall, and only then let her stand on her two feet.
“We’ve made it, I assume you’d like to be upright when getting a bed.”
She hummed in response, still clinging to him tightly.
He held the door for her as they walked to the bar.
He despised the way that the warmth crept to his ears.
“I’m certain.”
The woman tried to contain her reactions, but simply resigned to gesturing a hand toward the rooms, and walked ahead of the two in leading them to the available room.
"Enjoy your stay."
Vilkas nodded to the woman before turning to Y/n, who had already set her pack against the bedframe. She was currently struggling to remove her sheath from her belt.
“Y/n,” he called, already by her side, hands on her sheath.
“Let me. You’re exhausted. Don’t strain yourself, we have a long ride to Whiterun at dawn.”
Her eyes locked with his, hands still firmly gripped on the leather strap.
“Y/n,” there was a soft smile on his lips,” Please, let me take care of you.”
Her hands went slack, and he pulled the sheath from her, leaning it up against the side table. She then stripped from her armor, and Vilkas felt the need to turn away. He began to strip from his own, slipping off his bracers and boots before taking off the heavier pieces.
Vilkas did not turn to Y/n until he was in nothing but a tunic and trousers and saw she was in the same. She sat on the edge of the bed, silently, which would be fine if all she had done was wait for him to finish, but Vilkas could tell this was not the case for his dear Harbinger.
“Y/n… is there anything I can do for you?” His hand grabbed her own, not even thinking as he sat beside her. The wolf of Jorrvaskr softening, his eyes becoming that of a love-sick pup, not the sharp, cold ones she had come to know.
“Vilkas…”
She fell onto him, head pressed to his side, letting out a sigh.
“...I’m terrified.”
He turned to look down at her, an arm finding its way around her shrinking body. With the other, he brushed away loose hairs.
“What is scaring you?”
“That wolf today… That could be me…” Her voice began to waver. “It is not you.” His grip tightened around her.
“But Vilkas-”
“You are not a monster. You have never been one. Nor will you ever be. Do you remember the first time you shifted?”
He felt her tears fall onto his hand, and heard her cry out a weak “no”.
He rubbed her shoulder,” You didn’t attack anyone. You seemed to be aware of your surroundings. Didn’t hurt a single person.”
“Really?” She sniffled.
“Really. Our gentle Harbinger. A true alpha. You protect the weak and never lead us astray.”
She turned to him and stared at him closely.
“Just, Vilkas, I…”
He gave her arm a squeeze.
“I hate the beast blood…”
“I know, I know…”
“I want it gone!” She sobbed, burying her head in Vilkas’s chest.
“I know my dear… There have been rumors you know…”
He ran a hand through her hair.
“Rumors that there is a cure to lycanthropy… I’ve been trying for proof, and I will not rest until I have an answer for you.”
His heart melted at the way her eyes lit up, this smothered light finally beginning to find that spark again.
“I want to help you.”
“By all means, you may, but I’m doing this for you regardless. Should you want it, that is.”
“I want to.”
There was a smile on her face again, such a smile he hadn’t seen in months. Gods above, if he could see this every day, Vilkas would give up anything. She was a refreshing aura, a rejuvenating one. She could ask him to leash the wind, and by the gods, he’d find a way, if it meant he’d get to see but a glimpse of that smile.
“Then we’ll find it together. But Y/n, you need your rest. You take the bed. I’ll sleep by the door-”
He stood up, hand resting against the hilt of his blade that he had leaning against the bed.
“You don’t have to Vilkas, the bed is more than big enough to share.” She grabbed the sleeve of his tunic.
He gave a soft laugh, grabbing her hand.
“I’m quite a large man, Y/n. And besides, wouldn’t you mind sleeping beside a man?”
“Not you.”
He tried to stifle a cough.
Blasted woman.
“C’mon, grab that fur. We can share a mattress for a night Vil.”
“Uh, of course. If that’s what you wish.”
“It is.”
There’s that damn smile. By Shor, my heart’s gonna explode.
She sat on the side by the wall, legs tucked underneath her. Y/n was sitting on her knees, hands in her lap, and this beautiful smile was plastered to her face.
“Well, uh, then. I suppose that settles it. Remember we leave at dawn-”
“Vilkas…” she laughed,” just sleep. We will be okay.”
“Very well.”
Vilkas took his fur and draped it over himself, turning to catch a glimpse of Y/n, which made his heart leap.
Shut it you damn heart.
“Goodnight Vilkas,” Y/n murmured, and Vilkas took that as his cue to dim the lantern and try to catch a bit of sleep. After all, they had a big journey ahead of them.
___________________
Whiterun. Finally.
“I’ll race you to the city!” she called, kicking her steed.
“What?! How is this fair!? Y/n!”
But she was already much too ahead.
He huffed and set his horse to a trot, but couldn’t get the prior night out of his head.
Her hands would grab for me in the night… And she looked so peaceful, much calmer than the night I found her at her desk. By Mara, if that could be-
“Snap out of it Vilkas. With your blood, she’ll-”
He sighed and made his way to the city, stopping to drop his horse at the stables, and made his way to the city gate. There stood Y/n, staring at a letter. She held it with tight hands, eyes scanning the page with increasing speed.
“What is that? Y/n.”
“I-It’s from Kodlak. He tried to get it to me when I was in Solsthiem… The courier just got it to me… Vilkas, it's a cure!”
“A cure?”
He saw the shake in her hands and grabbed her shoulder.
“Quick. To Jorrvaskr. I’ll grab my brother, it's time to plan.”
And with a mutual nod, they sped off.
___________________
“Kodlak had mentioned something similar here in his journal, he was definitely looking for a cure, he must’ve sent the letter just before Jorrvaskr was attacked… It doesn’t mention a location though…”
“That’s no matter!”
Vilkas pushed aside the books she had poured through and pointed to a location in the Northwest of Falkreath.
“There’s legends of the Glenmoril Coven. Men have gone missing in this general area historically. If there is any place for these witches to be, it would be here.”
Y/n shot up and placed a kiss on his cheek before marking that area off on the map she kept in her tunic.
“I’ll gather the witch heads, I need you to plot a course for Ysgrammor’s Tomb. By my accounts, it should be up in The Pale.”
Vilkas’s head was still swimming. Did she even realize what she had done? Oh by the Nine, gods above, I love this woman.
He cleared his throat.
“Ugh, and we will need a total of four heads. For Kodlak.”
She smiled.
Gods above…
“Yes for Kodlak. I’ll rid us of all of them, don’t you fret. I’ll get every last one of them. The Companions will soon be bound to Hircine no longer, and Kodlak will get his rest in Sovngarde. Vilkas, you plot the course,” she turned from him to Farkas,” I need you to gather supplies. We need torches, food, furs for us and our mounts, we need maps, poultices, and anything else you would think would be wise to bring.”
“You’ve got it, sister,” he pulled Vilkas in with a headlock,” Vilkas and I will be right on that. You know he would do anything for you-”
“I think that’s enough brother.”
Vilkas pried himself from Farkas, nothing short of embarrassed. He could feel the heat creeping up his neck, and his ears began to burn.
She just laughed, and that did nothing to quell the feelings that plagued him at that moment.
“You boys are certainly brothers.” She shook her head, still laughing. With her hands firm on her hips, Y/n spoke again. “I’m off to meet with the Jarl. We all know what we are up to. I’ll be back in the evening.”
She then left the Harbinger suite with an extra pep in her step, though Vilkas didn’t pay it much attention, as his thoughts were near impossible to quiet.
Farkas turned to his brother.
“Don’t say it,” Vilkas muttered, clearly on edge.
“There’s nothing to say,” the twin replied, and with a grin, he clapped him on the shoulder. “Come, we should drink to celebrate this find.”
“I don’t know, brother. I’m sure I’ll need more time to go over these maps, go to the Jarl’s library-”
“We can just stay in the Hall?”
Farkas offered an encouraging look.
“Who could say no to such an offer?”
The man grinned, throwing an arm over his often grumpier twin.
“That’s what I like to hear.”
___________________
It had ended up being a very long night of drinking in Jorrvaskr. And despite this fact, evening had come and gone and Y/n had still not returned for the night. It was honestly the only reason that Vilkas had stuck around the hall that night. Aela had been incredibly obnoxious that night, scolding the twins on their desire for a cure, claiming that it was a blessing and sacred tradition. No amount of historical fact could bring her off her conclusion.
“The Circle has been bound by such tradition for well over a hundred years!”
“And the Companions have not held the tradition for hundreds! It’s what Kodlak wanted for us-”
“Still bending a knee to the old man, Vilkas. He’s in the eternal hunt now. That’s the life he chose, as have you. You should accept your choices as Skjor and I have.”
The conversation remained vague, as non-Circle members were sat around, and under Y/n’s leadership, had still not been informed on the secrets of the Circle.
“Sister, it is not wrong to take charge of your life-”
Farkas tried to support his brother, but Aela was quicker.
“But you cannot change your destiny.”
She thankfully laid off then. After things had ended in debate and poured drink, most had gone to their beds, but Vilkas still waited. It was nearly driving Tilma mad.
“Boy, off to bed with you. I’m sure that girl of yours will warm your bed soon.”
He couldn’t figure out a rebuttal to the matriarch, with the alcohol making his mind swim and the wolf within fighting for control.
“You can clean up around me Tilma… or just go get some rest…”
The woman scoffed but pulled away the various dishes and reset the chairs while Vilkas began to drift off, head still facing the doors, just waiting for his beloved Harbinger to return.
___________________
He didn’t even hear the door open when she returned.
“Oh Vil, you should’ve gone to bed…”
He felt her hand run through his hair, and he sighed at her touch.
“I ‘s waiting for you…”
“I know Vil, c’mon. To bed with you…”
She held her hand out to the sleepy Nord. He gladly took it and used way too much force to get himself up off the chair, but Y/n didn’t even flinch.
“You’re strong…”
“I thought you knew that already Vil. I was taught by the best,” she winked, but it didn’t phase him.
He didn’t notice the burlap sack slung across her body until they were just feet from his door.
“Where’s that from?”
“Oh, from Dragonsreach. I’ll return it to the kitchens tomorrow. I just needed to borrow it for tonight. This one is yours,” she handed him a scroll,” Goodnight Vilkas!”
She tied a similar scroll to Farkas’s door and then waved at Vilkas as he walked into his room. Curiosity caught the wolf and broke him from his tired mind.
Sir Vilkas of Jorrvaskr
That alone took him aback.
You are hereby invited to a ball at Dragonsreach, in honor of the Dragonborne, Y/n L/n, for her heroics five odd years ago.
His brain could not calm itself, so as if he was no longer in control of his body, he found his way to Y/n.
“Vilkas? Is something the matter-” She stared, face scrunched in worry.
“I wouldn’t miss your event for the world.”
Her face returned to a peaceful medium… and one could say well… He slept well that night.

Thank you to @feyna-v for tagging me!
1. Are you named after someone? No, my mom picked my name just because she liked it and it was American/English and not Polish (she didn’t want to give me a Polish name).  My dad agreed to it. (My name is not Mandelene, btw).
2. When was the last time you cried? While reading the ending of Small Country by Gael Faye a few days ago.
3. Do you have kids? Nope, not yet, haha, but I hope to have kids someday if I can. Two or three but no more than three :) Idk how to explain it, but at some point within the past two years, I started feeling more...maternal toward kids, if that’s the right word for it. I just see kids on the bus and think, huh, yeah, I could have one of those, I think I might like that, God knows why.
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? Oh, boy. Yes. It’s not as obvious when I’m online, but ask my mother or my close friends and they will confirm that 90% of my daily life is spent being sarcastic. My life is just one big sarcastic meme.
5. What’s the first thing you notice about people? How they present themselves -- whether they’re smiling or frowning, standing up straight or slouching, etc. For men, I immediately notice how tall they are because I’m a tall woman so tall men are absolutely heavenly to look at. Any man that’s like 6′2 ft or taller and in their mid to late twenties makes my heart flutter instinctively. (This is how I know I’m definitely straight, bahahaha).
6. What’s your eye color?
Hazel. I joke that I must be adopted because my parents and sister have green eyes, but my great-grandmother had hazel eyes so I guess my parents are my parents.
7. Scary movie or happy ending? Happy ending for sure. Scary movies rarely have a storyline that I find interesting tbh.
8. Any special talents? I’ve been told I bake a fantastic coffee cake. I can recite the alphabet backwards, and I know some first-aid, but those are skills and not really talents.
9. Where were you born? I’m a Brooklyn baby. :D Brooklyn, NY.
10. What are your hobbies? Writing, reading, occasional video-making, playing with my cat, indoor cycler, casual gamer, novice yoga pupil.
11. Have you any pets? Of course. Most of you know my baby already:
Macchiato!
Tumblr media
12. What sports do you play/have you played?
Oh, here we go. Brace yourselves for a tangent.
I was the sickly asthmatic kid who was too busy coughing up a lung to play sports, and I’m only half-joking. I played soccer a lot as a kid with my friends, but I was never on a team because my asthma was too severe and out of control for that. I’ve talked about this many times before, but I spent a good chunk of my childhood in the doctor’s office. I missed a lot of school. I got poked and prodded. I cried often about how much I hated being sick. I would be out playing with my friends and have an asthma attack in front of them and feel embarrassed. I would start wheezing and ignore it because I didn’t want everyone to make a big deal out of it. Don’t ever ignore your asthma, please. That never ends well. Sports were something I feared for years.
Midway through high school, my relationship with sports changed completely. I started seeing them as a method to improve my asthma rather than worsen it. My pulmonologist got my asthma under better control by coming up with a treatment regiment that he made sure I stuck to by lecturing my teenaged self at great length and wrote notes to my gym teachers at the start of every marking period. I slowly started regaining my confidence. My doctor made it clear that he was not excusing me from gym completely -- I had to exercise to the best of my ability without making myself sick, and if I kept getting attacks, it was back to the drawing board. If I couldn’t manage to exercise normally, then, in his view, my asthma was impeding my life too much and my medicine wasn’t working for me, which was totally true.
One of my high school gym teachers, Mr. B, was notorious for being the hardest P.E. teacher in the school. I was terrified of him. Whenever he made us run laps, I would pause when I started feeling unwell, rest for a minute, and then continue. He never said a word to me about it even though he was known for scolding students for stopping. Oddly enough, it took me a while to realize this, but he was always subtlely looking out for me. He always asked me if I had my inhaler with me at the start of class. Although I was often dead last in everything he made us do, he pretended not to notice and never commented on it. I never cheated him. If he said to do 30 laps, I would do 30 laps, even if I had to pause three times in between. Everyone else would have already moved on to other exercises while I was still doing my laps, lol, but I don’t think I ever had to reach for my inhaler. At the end of the term, he pulled me aside and told me, “I know you always tried your best, and I admire that.” He gave me an A. He was the only gym teacher I had who didn’t accuse me of making excuses or being lazy. Many previous teachers had convinced me I wasn’t trying hard enough, so I would push myself, and then I promptly proceeded to have attacks, be frustrated with myself, and end up in tears in the locker room. I needed Mr. B in my life to restore my faith in gym.
Nowadays I indoor cycle 3-4 times a week for 45 minutes to an hour to strengthen my lungs. Once a week, I have my “long tour” which is when I cycle for an hour and thirty minutes. After cycling, I lift weights for another 15-20 minutes. If I have a cold or any other upper respiratory infection, I stop all exercise until I’m well, and I hold myself to this. I have a better idea of my limits and what sports are best for me. I love swimming, but unfortunately, I don’t have a good indoor swimming pool around me, so it’s not something I can do regularly. Running/Track is still something I really struggle with, but brisk walking or hiking is fine. Last year, I was really into dance classes with my friend. Cycling is super kind to my lungs but leaves me exhausted in a good way, so that’s why it’s my favorite form of exercise. I’m sure if I did it outside though, I’d have asthma attacks. I’m generally okay with all sports/exercise as long as it doesn’t involve long stretches of running with few breaks in between, and I don’t do it outside when it’s cold. I won’t die from a light jog unless it’s the middle of January and there’s a meter of snow on the ground. You can invite me to play volleyball/basketball/tennis/whatever, and I promise I’ll be fine, haha.
I’ve also tried getting into yoga recently by following some YouTube instructors, but cycling is what I do most regularly and have stuck to. I take frequent exercise very seriously now, and I make it a priority.
13. How tall are you?
5′10 ft, so 177.8 cm. Super tall, I know. You should see my legs in yoga pants ;)
14. Favorite subject in school? In elementary school, I enjoyed English classes the most. In high school, AP comparative government in my senior year was my favorite because I love international politics. Then, there came a point in my life when I stopped liking English classes and started despising them (around my second year of university). College English consists of reading novels (which is a good start) and then writing unnecessarily long papers analyzing the novel, but if the professor doesn’t like your interpretation or analysis, they’ll deduct points. They’re not the classes you want to take if you want to actually learn how to be a better writer. They just teach you how to pander to the professor and not how to think for yourself. It’s annoying. Journalism classes get right down to the technical parts of writing and tear your sentences apart. I feel like I gain more from those classes than ones in which I have to write a ten-page essay on the symbolism of a key.
15. Dream job? A few years ago, I would have said “reporter for the New York Times,” and while that would be incredible, I have multiple dream jobs now.
I would still love to work at a media outlet. I’d want to either work at the international desk as a writer/reporter or work on digital content like podcasts or short documentaries. However, I can also picture myself working at an NGO or at a think tank. I might also be interested in doing something in government someday--anything that has a direct impact on getting involved in a community. Global politics and writing are my two biggest passions, so if I end up doing work in either of those areas, I’ll be happy.
Ideally, I can continue writing fiction on the side and publish it someday, but that’s still a dream I have to work my way up to.
I don’t want to leave anybody out, so if you’re reading this and you want to answer it, consider yourself tagged by me! :)

Answer 15 questions and tag 15 mutuals
I was tagged by @feyna-v , sorry it took me so long to actually do this.
1. Are you named after someone? You would think since my name is Lisa Marie, but nope. My mom just really loved that name, can’t say I feel the same.
2. When was the last time you cried? Umm….Last night? Yeah, last night. I was a bit overwhelmed with what I had to do and still need to do. But I’m better today. Got to crank out a few comics and got a few more ideas to draw out and it’s quiet at the library when everyone else is gone at a conference and you’re stuck at the desk for 8 hours.
3. Do you have kids? No.
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? Depends on what’s going on, but yeah I suppose so.
5. What’s the first thing you notice about people? The way they move. Whether it’s talking through hands, the way they shift their weight from one side to the other, or even just shifted in a seat. As an artist, I notice a lot about the body to help me grasp a better understanding of human anatomy. Now, if someone came up to me and wanted my attention, their face.
6. What’s your eye color? Brown….like a dark-brown. I’ve been told my eyes look black almost?
7. Scary movie or happy ending? Happy ending. I’m much too scared when it comes to horror stuff. Though I do watch horror let’s plays because the youtuber makes it generally more bearable.
8. Any special talents? Umm….does long patience count? No...okay then yeah...got nothing for you. I’m just kinda average. Unless you could the amount of caffeine I intake. People wonder if I’ll bleed coffee.
9. Where were you born? Germany, in a really small town....like super small, but hey at least we were 20 minutes away from the border.
10. What are your hobbies? I like long walks on the beach--....yeah no just kidding. I read, write, draw, and play video games. Though I dabble in animation and creating games too, though not for a while now.
11. Have you any pets? Tons…..3 dogs, 3 cats, and 4 birds. Though honestly, only one cat is mine. The rest belongs to the fam or to Espiechen.
12. What sports do you play/have you played? A lot? Okay I took gym class...we played sports there. I suck at sports. The only thing I was ever good at was badminton. Oh and being a goalie for soccer, but they took me out of goalie position when I saved the ball with my face.
13. How tall are you? 5’4” (162 cm)
14. Favorite subject in school? It was always English…..though I bet it would be art class if I had actually taken any. I was an English major until more recently. But I liked band too for the most part. We always had some good adventures.
15. Dream job? Living off of my art, either through an online shop, going to conventions and providing content for you guys. OR…..working for a game company as a concept artist. I wouldn’t even care if it was just an independent gaming company.
I’m tagging @espiechen @spatziline @purpurhedgehog @spectralmelon @theirunluckystars @mysteriouscloud
ummm and anyone else who would like to. Sorry, i’m really bad at tagging people because I don’t want to bug them.....but if anyone else wants to go right ahead.

Rules: Answer 11 questions, add 11 of your own, tag 11 people!
I was tagged by @feyna-v , thanks! (I always forget to do the stuff you tag me in, I apologize! ;v; )
1.) What's the last dream you remember?
I can't really remember the dream I had last night, but I do remember wearing light washed jeans, Adidas Superstars, and a big yellow sweater.
One of my favorite dreams I remember having was where I was in a comedy/tragedy musical set in a Victorian-esque era, but the dresses were a little shorter, and my love interest was one of my own characters! I remember us having a funny song together, but at the end a shooting broke out and I was shot as I was jumping into his arms. It was really sad but I'm a big fan of angsty stories so I rather enjoyed it!
2.) Which colour would you paint your room if you could choose anything?
I've been dying to paint my room for years, it's literally been the same paint since I was born.
I would definitely choose a pale or peachy pink, light yellow or kind of a dark purple. Maybe plum? Or a deep blue or dusty green, I really cannot pick one. But pink would be my first choice.
3.) Would you rather live in an independent house or a flat?
I've often flirted with the idea of living in both places, but I think I'd like a small house? I'm really not sure. Both sound quite nice. :)
4.) What are your favourite names? (you can choose any language for this one)
Klaus, Mandy, Briony, Anwen, Marina, London, Vitaliy, Serena, Vincent, Eliza, Juno, Gypsy, Harley, Mahogany, Salvatore, Jing-mei, and Diane, just to name a few! ❤
5.) At what age did you get your first mobile phone?
I was 13, about a month shy of my 14th birthday. My parents found I was responsible enough and would need a way to get in touch with me if something happened. (I've also got 3 little brothers and usually I'm in charge of them sooo)
6.) One thing you would absolutely do if you didn't have any monetary/time restraint?
I'd get a Kånken, Fujifilm camera, some aesthetic clothing and go to England with my family. :)
7.) Are you afraid of heights?
I like to think that I'm not, but I most certainly am. It depends on my situation though.
8.) What is your earliest memory?
I don't know if this is my earliest memory, but I remember being tucked up in a swing with a stuffed dog under many blankets, drifting off to sleep.
9.) How many languages can you speak fluently (or semi-fluently)?
English and a little bit of Spanish!
10.) What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
I can't really remember anything other than bits and pieces or things I've said myself. So I can't exactly answer this question.
11.) As a child, what was your favourite game?
Pokémon Platinum without a doubt! :)
This was a lot of fun! I tag @scarfythewizard , @tomcatvibes , @capri-sunqueen , @abstractaquamarine , @skye--walker , @ambivertcrouton , @aph-germany , @valisartbin , @aph-lasagna , @someone-you-know-already , and @mepmeptakesnap !!
My questions:
1.) What's a favorite aesthetic of yours?
2.) If money wasn't an issue, where on earth would you visit first?
3.) City or countryside?
4.) DC or Marvel?
5.) What's a favorite childhood memory?
6.) Are you more likely to play video games or watch others play video games?
7.) How many stuffed animals are on your bed?
8.) Biggest fear?
9.) Do you prefer older music or modern day music?
10.) Who or what helps you get through your darkest days?
11.) What's your favorite season and why?
Have fun, lovelies! :)

this is from @feyna-v, thanks!
Rules: Answer 20 questions and then tag 20 people you want to get to know better!
Nickname: owl, AB, garbled versions of my name, i respond to frantic gibberish and hands flailing towards me
Height: around 5″7 ish, but it’s been a long time since i last checked my height
Orientation: bisexual <3
Where I live: Canada!
Favourite Season: after this summer, i realized i don’t like summer because it’s so damn hot. well, i do like summer, but it’s definitely not a favourite. fall is winning right now with partially cloudy weather, pretty leaves and scarf-wearable temperatures. also i love halloween. i like winter for its good sleeping conditions, snow, and chances of snow days. however, it can suck ass and cause traffic accidents, and christmas shopping is rough. i like christmas itself though. and cookies. and the decorations. winter is therefore tied with spring: cool breezes and sunny weather and flowers? yes, please. however! i have pollen allergies and live in a forest of cottonwood trees. TLDR; fall is winning right now, winter and spring are tied for second, summer is dead last
Favourite Fruits: i can’t think of a fruit i don’t enjoy eating, but manadarin oranges, raspberries, blueberries and strawberries and watermelon are all up there. i also have a weakness for lemons.
Favourite Flowers: oh this is hard. i like gerbera daisies, those little roses, baby’s breath (is it babies?), lavender, and water lillies. plus those weird little flowers mosses sometimes put out. and clover flowers. and sunflowers. and tulips.
Favourite Colours: deep teal, coral pink, purple, blacks and greys. i like sunny yellows too.
Favourite Animals: there are so many animals, but owls, cats, penguins, axolotls and polar bears are favourites.
Favourite Instruments: i like the electric guitar, the cello, the piano and the bagpipes. i like each in their different ways. the bagpipes are fun to listen to, the piano is versatile, the cello is soulful, and the electric guitar is also versatile. plus, guitar solos.
Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate: dammit i like all three of these. if i had to choose i’d pick tea. i like the taste of coffee as long as there’s something in it to curb the bitterness (milk, cream, sugar, something in a copious amount). hot chocolate is comforting and can be as fancy or as simple as you want it to be
Average hours of sleep: around nine. during school, around seven (i’m hoping to change that)
Cat or dog person: cats, because they’ll let me know when they don’t like something i’m doing and when they do. with dogs, they’re happy most of the time but i can’t tell if they like the way i’m petting them, if they like me, if they’re just happy and looking in my direction. i like dogs too, but cats have my heart. i have cried at pictures of cats.
Favourite fictional character: Nico di Angelo, Spider-man, and Canada from Hetalia are all up there
# of blankets I sleep with: one duvet, year round.
Blog created: lemme check- march 2017
Random fact: i get sunburned quite a bit because i forget to put on sunscreen or plan on wearing my hoodie and take it off. however, i don’t notice when i’m sunburnt either because unless i scratch them my sunburns don’t hurt. my mom will notice my arms are lobster red and hurriedly apply lotion to them, but they heal in about a day.
Favourite Scent: lavender hands down. i also like mint and lemon though.
Dream trip: i’d like to take a road trip across Canada someday. i’d probably go with friends. i’d also like to see more of Asia and go to Singapore to say hi to my littlest cousin (last i saw her i was pretty little too. i tried to teach her to squeeze my penguin toy to make it squeak, and her mother brought her back from preschool the following day and told me she kept punching its belly for some reason. it seems she didn’t have the strength required to make the squeaker squeak) and my aunt and uncle. also, the food there is really good.
i’m tagging @abottleofstars and whoever else wants to do this!

Tag Game
Rules: Answer 11 questions - Add 11 of your own - Tag 11 people  I was tagged by the lovely @wherearemyglassesbro
1. If you could have any car, what would it be?
I’m not the kind of person who would want a flashy/luxurious car because I’d be afraid of driving it tbh. If you gave me money today and told me to pick something, I’d probably get a 2018 Range Rover Evoque in red.
2. What’s your favorite school memory?
Every spring at my elementary school, we would have a walk-a-thon, which was basically just a big fundraising event during which the street in front of the school would be closed off (I went to a private Catholic school from kindergarten to eighth grade so fundraising events happened fairly often). We would all go outside and run around/play for the entire day, and at the end of every walk-a-thon, the eighth-grade students who would soon be graduating would play a volleyball match against all of the teachers and clergy. And well, I vividly remember the teachers + clergy always destroying the eighth graders (my class included). One of the priests from the church connected to the school was from Argentina and was an amazing volleyball player, and he didn’t go easy on the kids at all, haha. In retrospect, there’s just something so funny to me about a bunch of priests and nuns getting dressed up in t-shirts and shorts to beat some 13-year-olds at volleyball. I’m an ex-Catholic now, but I had a lot of crazy memories at that school. (Sadly, it closed down a year ago).
3. What’s something you’ve done for your community lately?
I write for the alumni newsletter at my university, so I guess that’s a contribution to the community?
4. Have you ever left the country you live in? Unless Canada counts, then no, haha. But as many of my followers already know, I’m leaving for London in exactly 14 days and I’ll be there for 2.5 months for an internship. I’ll also be in Paris for about 2 weeks, and I might travel to other parts of Europe depending on how I feel abroad and how well I stick to my budget.
5. Would you rather be a cowboy/girl or a pirate and why?
A pirate. The Wild West just isn’t for me and it’s not my aesthetic.
6. What would you put in a time capsule for someone in the future? I’d leave a video or audio diary so the person could see/hear about what life was like in the past.
7. If you could bring someone back from the dead, who would it be?
This is going to sound lame, but I’d bring back my dog. I grew up with her, and she was my best friend. <3
8. What is your dream job?~
Being an international correspondent for a news organization like the Associated Press, New York Times, Washington Post, BBC, etc., but I wouldn’t want to do that forever. I’d eventually want to settle down and work in some sort of digital media like podcast production and write fiction on the side.
9. If you could have lunch with a fictional character who would it be?
Sebastian from Black Butler. He’d prepare some fantastic food, and I’m sure demons have interesting things to talk about.
10. What kind of shoes did you wear today?
I actually found my exact shoes online -- mine are the navy blue ones, not the taupe. They’re Skechers boat shoes that are super light and comfy and will be perfect for lots of walking/sightseeing when I get to London. Thankfully, I didn’t spend $60 for them though. Like, really, DSW? This is why I go to my homie, Marshalls, instead, lol. Half the price, bro.
11. Would you rather have free gas for life or free flights for life?
Free gas because I picture myself driving more often in the future than traveling by plane.
I’m going to tag: @themindlesssheep , @kayladchristine , @feyna-v , @toboewhisker , @awkwardlittleintrovert , @childofthemoon86 , @abnosome1 , @somewhat-disabled-canadian , @kitycat1 , @tonhalszendvics , @icicle223 , and anyone else who wants to do this!  And here are my 11 questions for you guys:
1) If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?  2) What’s your favorite type of music to listen to?  3) What’s your favorite book of all time?  4) Mountain or beach?  5) What’s one thing about yourself that you really love?  6) If you could learn another language overnight, which language would you pick?  7) If you could give your past self a piece of advice, what would you tell them?  8) What’s something you’ve always wanted to do/learn? 9) Who would you want to be stranded with on a deserted island? 10) List two pet peeves. 11) How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?

I was tagged by @feyna-v thank you!
1. What’s the last dream you remember?
It was winter and I walked around in a city together with a girl that I didn’t recognize but apparently she was dream-me’s friend. We sat down on the street, it started to rain but we didn’t get up for some reason. Then I woke up.
Which colour would you paint your room if you could choose anything?
Lilac (that’s actually the colour of my room but I chose it, so.. ^^)
Would you rather live in an independent house or a flat?
I’d rather have a flat.
What are your favourite names? (you can choose any language for this one)
That changes a lot but some I currently like are: Mai/Mei, Domingo and Linn.
At what age did you get your first mobile phone?
On my 13th birthday.
One thing that you would absolutely do if you didn’t have any monetary/time restraint.
I’d get my friends (real life and online) together to go on a fun trip to somewhere.
Are you afraid of heights?
Depends on how high it is and how stable the ground is. But generally not that much.
What is your earliest memory?
When I was about 2 and a half, I went on holiday with my family and I remember a few things from there, for example wanting to take my (a few months old) little sister on a pool slide. My parents didn’t allow me to.
How many languages can you speak fluently (or semi-fluently)?
Fluently: German and English
Semi-fluently: French and Italian (however French is on the ‘almost fluent’ side and Italian on the ‘barely semi-fluent’ side.)
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
I have a bad habit of not listening to advices people tell me, but I guess it was a life hack my economics teacher told us. (I noted it somehwere but I forgot.)
As a child, what was your favourite game?
I suppose it was pretend-games.
My 11 questions:
Name a colour that you don’t like at all.
If you could fix something in your life that you did wrong, what would it be?
Do you prefer heat or cold?
Which movie would you recommend to me? (doesn’t have to be your favorite, just one you really like or want people to see)
Who is your favorite protagonist (book/movie/tv show)
If you could get any pet, what would you choose?
What do you really want to do before you die?
Which song was the last that stuck in your head?
Earbuds or earphones?
Which person (alive or dead) would you want to punch in the face?
What would you do with 20€/equivalent in your currency?

Which Hetalia country do you think is the best actor/actress?
Thanks for the question! 😊
I'm not sure whether you meant acting in a performance or in real life (essentially, acting as in deceiving other people and hiding one's real emotions and intentions) so I'll touch both cases.
I can't help but think that France must be a great actor both in real life and in a play or movie. In real life, in spite of being melodramatic and often making a great display of his emotions, he can also fake a great lot when he wants to. He can come across as sympathetic when he's actually internally rejoicing for what happened to the other person, clueless when, in truth, he knows a lot about what's going on, friendly and affable in order to get close to a person he doesn't care about when he needs to... France has an uncanny awareness of his own body language and facial expressions, he can slightly tweak them and appear 100% genuine no matter what his inner thoughts are. If France puts some effort into it, realizing he's lying is close to impossible.
Mind, I think that many personifications are actually quite skilled in the arts of deception and lying – even some who generally choose to be transparent can lie with ease when they want or need to. Even so, even among skilled people, I think that France takes the cake because his skills encompass all emotions. Many others, instead, can have a pocker face or sound confident when they aren't, maybe even appear friendly, but nobody is quite so outstanding as France.
It goes without saying that France can employ his skills in a performance as well. Needless to say, he's a great actor in that sense, capable of capturing and conveying even subtle emotions and shifts. Moreover, France is good at understanding each character's personality and depth and bringing it to life on a screen or stage. His melodramatic and melancholic nature helps as well, making him able to convey powerful emotions as well. It's a mixture of body language, facial expressions, and even vocal tone that creates an outstanding performance.
Always talking about performances, India is canonically involved in Bollywood movies and a great actor as well. I picture him having a dynamic acting style, he's really good at conveying powerful emotions and dramatic moments. India is also very skilled at harmonizing his performance with the other actors and even stage directions, he can always position himself related to them in the way that yields the best result. When it comes to movies, he always keeps in mind camera positions and angles, consequently tweaking his performance.
Finally, I think China and England must be good performers and well.
China has an innate sense of art and an inner depth that he doesn't often share with others but that helps him get into characters and understand their motivations, bringing their personalities to life. He can pull off both campy characters and more dramatic, serious ones, depending on what's needed. He's good at dosing the strength of his acting, he always results believable. His microexpressions are particularly excellent, he's great in close-ups and slow-paced scenes.
As for England, while he certainly isn't the best actor in real life due to his insecurities taking over, he's completely different when he has to enact a fictional tale. He does get deeply into characters, portraying them with an uncanny intensity (and this intensity is what makes him so good, actually), but there's always a slight degree of separation that lets him keep his cool. Since England is amazing, in particular, at conveying emotions through talk (voice, pauses, rhythm...) he's best at stage plays and monologues.
Of course, these four aren't the only personifications who can put up a good performance, but I think others aren't quite as good or maybe, they can be outstading but only if portraying certain characters.
