here’s a list of various phrases i’ve found and reference often split into praises and what I would consider encouragements. i keep them together for ease of use. i’ve also broken down my process a little bit below that. these have been accumulated over time (and too much time reading through r/bdsmadvice). many are fem! gendered because that’s what i write most often, but that’s easy to change.

on degradation: it’s also pretty easy to take a praise and make it humiliating or degrading if that’s what you’re going for. adding a degrading nickname/title is the most obvious way to do it, but some of my favorite ways are more subtle. using a condescending tone of voice, an aptly timed praise when the receiver is doing something gross/typically seen as humiliating or degrading, etc.

don’t like how something is worded? take it apart and rephrase it the way your character might say it.

phrase i found:

“Quiet my love, I want to hear how wet you are for me, it’s intoxicating.”

used for different characters or whatever:

bakugo: “shut your fuckin’ mouth, wanna hear how wet you are for me. ‘s perfect, princess.”

kirishima: “be quiet angel, you sound so pretty and i wanna hear it. fuck, you’re so wet, baby. i can’t get enough of you.”

aizawa: “hush, sweetheart. let me hear your pretty little pussy. it’s fucking intoxicating.”

daddy kink: “shh, shh. quiet, sweet pea. i want to hear how wet you are for me… it’s such a pretty sound.”

praise & degradation: “shut the fuck up. let me hear how much your pussy loves it when i use you. that’s a good whore, listen to how wet you are. such a nasty slut, getting off on this.”

Homelander's "bedroom"

I made a long two-part post (pt 1; pt 2) reconstructing the layout of Homelander's penthouse today. One of the things I had been suspecting and set out to either confirm or disprove was the idea that Homelander's bedroom is not separate but part of his large open plan space, behind his large TV wall.

And it totally is!!

Most of this was already posted in the longer penthouse post, but I wanted to make a separate post explaining just why I am now officially and 100% convinced that Homelander has no real "bedroom" per se and instead has his bed essentially in his living room (which has no door, so pretty much anyone can walk in).

Beyond the obvious implications this has for writing fic, it's another super fascinating insight into the character of Homelander.

We never get a full picture of his bed in the show. Instead, what we got were some additional promo pics of Homelander standing in front of his bed:

And of the mirror ceiling above his bed:

In the various episodes of season 3, we never get a full visual of Homelander's bed, BUT we do get glimpses of it:

In S3E7, there's this:

This is the weakest evidence, but this scene is what first made me think Homelander's bed was probably behind the wall with the large TV. I mean, that looks like a bed. Also note the mirror wall beside the bed:

In S3E6, we get another glimpse of the bed in the Mirrorlander scene, including the paintings and nightstand on the left hand side of the bed.

The visual is not super super clear, but:

However, the clearest evidence is in S3E1, when Homelander checks up on Stormfront, and we get this snapshot:

The bedroom corner is the left part of the picture, and both "Birth of our Nation's Flag" and "President Lincoln, writing the Proclamation of Freedom" (see here for a more complete list of paintings) are clearly recognizable.

There are some additional paintings in the S3E1 scene/screenshot when compared to the promo pic on top, BUT those additional paintings also show up in the mirror ceiling still that was released separately (you can see the top of the frame of the additional painting in the bottom right hand corner):

These three scenes taken together allow us to place his bed pretty definitely here, on the opposite wall from the window:

Stormfront's bed was in the right-hand corner by the window, but she's dead, so it has been removed. What we can also see in this picture is another mirror wall, marked in orange. (On the other side of this mirror wall is Homelander's big TV).

So, tl;dr, his bed is placed inside the open space of his penthouse facing his large glass front and has large mirrors to the left, the right, and on the ceiling.

Here is where it is relative to everything else:

The bed is marked number 6, and the mirror walls to the left and right are marked as 14 and 14b. I'm not going to explain all the other numbers (they're all explained here and here), but a couple for reference are

1: The huge TV screen; 2: the doorless entrance area; 5: the ugly brown couch; 12: the staircase leading upstairs; 13: the large US flag on the wall; 15: where Stormfront's bed used to stand; and 17: the Mirrorlander mirror.

I was fighting so much with the CSS for Umibudo. I had three Okinawan language sources and I think by the time I finished messing with the chapter’s highlight text it broke almost all the links I’d put in the note. So these are the sources I used to attempt writing romanized Okinawan: Useful Okinawan phrases from Omniglot I believe this website has a set number of phrases they try to translate every language into, they don’t fill out all of them because I don’t think they were able to get all of them, but for basics and a quick guide it’s helpful.

Learn Essential Okinawan Language Phrases helpful in your travels! by Nihongo Master This website is somewhat in line with what I learned, how to say thank you and to greet people as well as a few useful phrases. It’s a website more for learning Japanese so a lot of it they compare to Japanese and explain the differences when an opportunity arises.

Rikka,Uchinaa-nkai! ( Let’s go to Okinawa! ) Okinawan Language Textbook for Beginners This is a beautiful resource of self study that one would find at the start of a language class. It teaches you how to introduce yourself, ask where something is, talk about your family (not partners though), ask how much something is and talk about food as well as a few other things. A lot of love went into this. I didn’t use wikipedia but they also have a decent amount of information.

Okinawan, or Uchinaaguchi, is an endangered language. So while I know that the phrases I used might not have been what would’ve been spoke in the 80s because language changes, my conjugations are probably very wrong, and the ways I used words might’ve not been accurate, I still wanted to attempt it. So please forgive all the errors, and I hope these sources can be useful for anyone with an interest in language/ curiosity about Okinawan/Uchinaaguchi or at least interesting.

Rowing Accidents

This is a list of rowing accidents compiled on the RowSafeUSA website. It lists details of rowing accidents in chronological order, and though it might not list every accident in history it is one of the most comprehensive lists I’ve seen.

“The coxswain in winter”

An amazing article that goes into depths about modern-day coxswains and what they do especially during winter months when the oarsmen are doing a lot of physical training and erging indoors. It discusses how some coxswains participate in the workouts with the oarsmen and also highlights how some cox (specifically those with medical limitations like asthma) deal with the fact that they feel bad for not being able to participate in the physical training.

So I thought I’d start of this blog with some of my favorites!

The Long Game by lackadaisical_lizard (M, 243k) - British modern high school AU where James is the popular jock/ football star and Regulus is the quiet artist who couldn't be less bothered by status or popularity. They work on a project together. Pining ensues.

Librarian’s Review: I had originally set out to read this as a sort of fluffy side fic, but I quickly became obsessed with the well thought-out character building and phenomenal plot. My emotions have short-circuited. Absolutely one of the best things I’ve ever read, and guaranteed to make me smile and cry in equal measure.

my almost lover by alaranai (T, 23k) - Regulus and James are a couple. James is the last person to realise this.

Librarian’s Review: The characters in this are so spot on. I swear it was written by the marauders themselves. I’m so impressed with this author - they’ve somehow managed to write an adorable story that stocks with you even after you’ve read it a bajillion times.

love is not a predicate by mordax (M, 132k) - Regulus wants to be a classical pianist but can only bring himself to practice at night, and James has insomnia and finds music is the perfect cure. An exploration of Regulus's mind and struggle with the Black family, his journey to accepting himself, and his path to mending broken relationships, building new ones, and maybe, possibly, finding love. (circa 70s in a boarding school much like Hogwarts, only muggle)

Librarian’s Review: A truly outstanding angsty read. Regulus is so broody in this that I want to squish him (and possibly the author too). The world-building is so well woven into the plot that you don’t even notice it until you start being able to picture scenes as they happen. 

Art Heist, Baby! by otrtbs (M, 219k) - When James Potter answers a mysterious ad in his local coffee shop, the last thing he expects is to be thrown into a world of white collar crime, but how can he resist when the mastermind behind the operation has dark hair and brooding eyes and promises wealth beyond James' wildest imagination? He would do anything for that boy named after a star, including stealing millions of dollars of fine art.

Librarian’s Review: Call me basic, but this fic is truly one of the pillars of the entire Jegulus fan-canon. It is a classic. Are you ready to be destroyed and left speechless in awe? Well saddle up buckaroo, because reading this for the first time (or even the 51st) will change you forever.

And in the Death of His Reputation He Felt Truly Alive by reggiesreputation (M, 79k) - Regulus Black is the biggest pop star on the charts, but when pictures of him kissing a man are splattered on every paper in the world, he is severed from his family's record label. He has lost his music, his home, and his reputation is in shambles. But with the help of producer Remus Lupin, his brother, and a gorgeous man he meets in a dive bar, Regulus Black will rebuild his reputation, write his best album yet, and maybe even fall in love.

Not really a whump ask, but medicinal: If I wanted to sneak a laxative into a dinner party's food to cause a distraction, what should I use? Preferably something that works quickly but doesn't kill and is relatively easy to get in pre-industrial times (maybe plant-based)

No, it's fine! Here you go:

1. Milk of Magnesia

It is not plant-based but Milk of Magnesia is a good option, if you are willing to bend history a little bit (first documented use as a laxative in 1829 by Sir James Murray, patented in 1873. I learned this particular bit on Wikipedia, anyone who knows more can correct me)

Milk of Magnesia is an osmotic/saline purgative that acts by rapid absorption and retention of water into the intestines and stimulating intestinal bowel movements. It is one of the fastest acting laxatives out there. The effects can occur within 2-3 hours of consumption.

Magnesium salts have some side effects like flushing, fall of blood pressure, nausea, lethargy, fatigue, difficulty in breathing. However, these mostly result from chronic consumption.

2. Irritant Laxatives

If you want a natural, plant-based laxative, then you might want to look into the category of irritant laxatives. They act by irritating the colon, promoting bowel movements and increasing fluid and electrolyte secretion within the colonic lumen. However, they take 6-8 hours to show their effects (still faster compared to other laxative groups which generally take 24-72 hours to produce their effects). They also have some nasty side effects (though these may prove to be helpful in the "distraction" you speak of)

Senna alexandrina or simply Senna can cause nausea, abdominal cramps and urine discolouration.

Castor oil is unpalatable, produces frequent abdominal cramps and has a high risk of damaging the intestinal mucosa.

Although not from a plant, this group also includes phenolphthalein (discovered in 1871, so again you would need to bend history a little bit if you want to use this). However, it is highly carcinogenic and cardiotoxic.

Hi frens - a recent conversation with one of my fave mutuals brought steered us to a conversation about writers being gatekeepers for how they make their content or what resources they use for their stories etc. etc. and it just got me thinking how I literally never want to gatekeep anything I used to write my stories. Below is a list of resources / websites that I often use when world building or trying to find some inspiration for fics (largely fantasy). I will definitely plan on updating this as I find re-sources and will additionally add writing tools - I will also link this post in my FAQ so it lives somewhere findable.

WORLD BUILDING TOOLS:

These websites are free and though they are limited, you don't necessarily need to use the actual world building as much as you can just use the questions and formatting. These sites will ask you EVERYTHING you might need to know about your world.
