Just a snip out of my fic: In Direct Opposition. I reread my fics now and then, always confused about who wrote them.
----------------------
"Dupain-Cheng?!" Not the reaction Alya had hoped for. "What's she doing here, and looking like that at my Adrikins?"
" Your Adrikins?" Alya countered sharper than she intended.
Chloé snapped back. "Yes my Adrikins, who else's?"
Alya rounded on her. "Okay, what is the deal with you two? I've seen you together like once since the interview, and that was for a project. If you want him that badly why haven't you made a move? Why do I think he doesn't even know?"
Chloé's eyes had widened as Alya spoke. Was it the cut of her words or the finger jabbed at her chest? Alya hadn't meant any of it to sound like that, she hadn't expected to end her rant breathless.
Chloé swallowed, she looked legitimately afraid, cornered. "I- he's- we've been friends forever! He's mine, and I'm his! He couldn't have any friends, but he had me . No one was rich enough to be my friend, but I had him . I had him first! Since we were tots, tots! No one is allowed to come along and take him from me! It's not fair!"
She was tearing up by the end of it, her voice wavering between terror and petulance. Alya felt guilt settle across her shoulders, mingled with a seemingly out of place relief. She withdrew her finger and ran her hand back through her hair.
"I'm sorry. I could have worded that better. What you're talking about Chloé, is friends. It's not the end of the world if someone else likes your friend."

Since Mark oh so kindly demanded for the fic. There you go, a part of it.
Lewis walks slowly with his arms stretched out.
“No,” Evren shrieks, giggling. “No. No.” And tries to pass by Lewis but the older Brit scoops him up by the armpits and swings him around in a circle. It’s the only sound heard now; everyone has paused what they were doing, choosing to watch Lewis and Evren instead. George wishes to live in this moment forever. He never wants to stop hearing his son’s warm, soft but loud laugh mixed together with Lewis’ hearty one. He wants to make a snow globe of this moment, capture it in a miniature item, display it above the fireplace, and watch it many times, until he can’t get enough.
“Again.” Evren requests the second Lewis puts him down on his feet. Lewis picks him up again and swings him in another 2-3 full circles. He requests a third time but Lewis denies him when he stumbles onto his legs from the dizziness.
Lewis does lift Evren in the air for a split second to plant a kiss on his cheek before he adjusts his grip to carry him in his arms instead. In return, Evren loops his arms around Lewis’ neck and rests his head on his shoulder.
George stops the recording when he sees Lewis walking towards him and pockets his phone. Lewis stands in front of George, none of them speaking a word. They just stare and soak each other in. Lewis’ braids are most likely wet, his face is splattered with dried muddy water—George knows his own face wouldn’t be any better—his trousers are dirty. But oh does Lewis look beautiful. Is it possible for Lewis to not look beautiful? George doubts it.
“A day to never forget, eh.” George says with a smile, bringing out a chuckle out of Lewis.
Evren perks up at his dad’s familiar voice and twists around. He waves both his hands, catching George’s attention, and leans forward. George holds out his arms for him and Lewis hands his son over to him with a rehearsed ease one gets after having done this a hundred times. The thing is they haven’t but the way they are acting felt like they have.
“Did you have fun?” George asks as Evren snuggles into him.

WIP Wednesday
Thanks to @ammoniteflesh and @crackinglamb for tagging me last week, and @delicatefade for tagging me this week! I'm very happy to be back to writing and have something recent (though rough) to share.
Tagging with no pressure: @ialpiriel @chocochipbiscuit @farfromdaylight @dreadfutures @warpedlegacy @rakshadow @skyeventide @nirikeehan
Current WIP is "Harsh Light," an FFXIV Haurchefant/WoL fic, big Heavensward spoilers so under a cut.
This is right after Haurchefant's death. Ariane is having a Bad Time.
***
She did not know what she had expected, when she at least shut herself within her guest suite at Alphinaud's urging, but it happened all at once. The scent of him still lingered in the room, in the bed they had shared, its clothes still rumpled from the night before, tossed back when they arose, and not remade. The cups from which they had drunk hot chocolate only a night before had been cleared away—the loss itself a violation, an obscenity—but the book they had been reading together lay on the low table between the sofa and the hearth, still marked at the page where they had left off, before a chapter Haurchefant would never hear her read.
A wild sound of grief made its passage up from the very depths of her soul, neither sigh nor scream but something primal, and with it the ice shattered.
Ariane curled herself into a corner of the sofa—the bed was unthinkable—and wept into her knees, and then into a sofa pillow whose brocade cover would need washing later, scream-sobbed uncontrollably and seemingly without end.
When she found herself quieted at last, her throat and her eyes sobbed raw, she thought perhaps she had nothing left in her to weep, and then she saw him again, that bloody smile, and the way his hand had reached for her at the last, and her tears overtook her again.
"I don't want it," she rasped at last, into a silence punctuated only by the ticking of the ornate wooden wall clock. She barely had voice left to pray, but her parched lips formed the words all the same. "Do you hear me?"
There was no answer. No whisper in her mind, no migraine blur of the Echo either. Only the soft ticking, and her ragged breath.
"I don't want it," she scraped out again. "If this is the price of the Blessing of Light—if you're going to take everyone I love, over and over again, then I don't want it! Do you hear me? I don't want it, I don't want it, I don't…"
The staff of House Fortemps, though unprepared for such circumstances, were nonetheless well-versed in the art of discretion, and moved through the manor's corridors as silently as temple mice, pretending they could not hear through closed doors the cries of inconsolable grief for the House’s lost son.

“Robin! When did you…” Nancy's words die before they reach her lips, her mouth gaping like a fish as she attempts to process the vision of Robin, licking into the mouth of some strange and random girl, her hand sliding up her thigh and under her skirt. Both of the girls had jolted and sprung apart as if touched by a live wire, Robin shaking out her hands rapidly and looking at Nancy with wild eyes, face flushed and jaw working, attempting to speak. The strange girl had shrieked and pulled her skirt down, hitting Nancy's shoulder as she fled the scene.
“Nancy, oh my god, this is not -”
“Robin why were you…”
“Nance, please, sit down I can just -”
“Don’t TOUCH ME!” Nancy shrieked, wrestling out of the soft grip Robin had on her shoulder. They both stood there, Robin panting, Nancy struggling to breathe at all as her brain tried to process the situation she had witnessed. Both Robin and Nancy's eyes were blown wide with pinprick pupils as they regarded each other. The alcohol in Nancy's blood seemed to evaporate when she saw a flash of Robins tongue as the other girl licked her lips and looked at the doorway. Nancy made a dash for the exit as frantically as possible.
“NANCY!” a shout followed her, barely heard over the panicked thunder of her heart as she shoved any obstacle out of her way. A loud cacophony of ‘What the fuck?’s and ‘Bitch!’ chasing her as she shouldered her way to the front door of the sorority house and out into the fresh air. She stumbled from the steps of the Kappa Gamma Chi house and into the sidewalk, stumbling forward without any sort of plan or destination.

fic snip
a fic snip from a generic fantasy AU i have percolating in my brain:
+++
Cody checks his shoes every morning before he stuffs his feet inside for the day.
“One time that happened, one time,” Obi-Wan chides whenever he catches Cody doing it.  “I haven't touched pear wine since!”
Cody will never stop checking.  He can all too easily imagine what might have happened if he hadn't heard the small snores emanating from his shoe.  Obi-Wan swears he could have cast his magic in time to escape serious injury, even hungover and half-asleep, but Cody won't take the chance.
Also—Obi-Wan is annoyed by reminders of the time he got so drunk he fell asleep in a shoe.  Cody will never, ever stop checking.
+++
(notes: in this au, the clones are magically-created copies of a bitter warrior with a vendetta.  they’ve escaped from the wicked mages who created them and have made a home for themselves.  somewhere along the way they met a society of tiny mage sprites -- the jedi, natch -- and made friends, and everything is Soft.
mage sprite obi-wan has brown butterfly wings.  :3)

I am probably never going to finish this fic, but I did just uncover it and remember it and... I completely forgot how much fun it was to write Stephen Strange trying to make sense of everything about Bucky. So have a snippet of my "Sam, Bucky, and Zemo somehow uncovered a Winter Soldier Era Bucky from another universe and need help dealing with it" fic.
He probably should've been surprised when not one, not two, but three known war criminals showed up at his door. He probably should've been surprised that two of those war criminals were clearly variants of one another.
Instead, Stephen Strange pressed his fingers against the bridge of his nose and sighed, stepping aside to let Captain America and his three stooges walk through the door to the Sanctum, without so much as asking a question.
“Sorry to show up unannounced like this, Doc,” Sam had the good graces to offer as he guided a long-haired, silver-armed Bucky Barnes through the Sanctum door. The other Bucky Barnes offered a slight nod of acknowledgement as he followed, and Zemo - Baron Zemo? - stood on the front step for a long moment before he finally crossed the threshold, his expression impassive.
Stephen closed the door, leaning against it on one hand for a long moment before he turned around and gestured meaningfully to the couches. “Well… please, have a seat. I’d ask why you’re here but, but I have a feeling I can at least partially guess.”
Sam Wilson was the one who sat down first, and it seemed as though there was some confusion regarding who would sit where. When both the vibranium-armed Bucky and Zemo seemed likely to take the same seat - the couch facing the door - a silent, almost entertaining stand-off took place before Bucky decided, apparently, to leave the seat to the Sokovian. His silver-armed companion, however, seemed to take no issue whatsoever with sitting himself promptly on the edge of the couch beside Zemo, something which seemed to annoy the other Bucky as much as it pleased Zemo.
Stephen had no idea what to make of the whole scene.
“To get you quickly caught up,” Sam began as Stephen joined them, a wave of the hand conjuring five cups of tea for his guests before he sat himself beside Sam to listen. “We have no idea where he came from. We were taking out a recently reactivated HYDRA base and he was just… there. All things considered it didn’t seem right to leave him, but uh… god this is all so far outside my wheelhouse.”
“From what I can tell his programming seems to be intact,” Bucky - the vibranium armed one who had collected up a cup of tea - added. “Considered bringing him to Wakanda but given the added confusion of what the fuck is happening, Sam thought this would be a better idea.”
“Just so that I’m clear,” Stephen gathered a cup of tea, leaning back into his seat to cradle it as he looked over the trio across from him, “what I’m hearing is that you’ve brought the Winter Soldier into my home.” He tilted his head just enough to look at Sam. “Do you often bring war criminals to say hello to people, or are you trying to make a statement, Captain?”
“One’s been pardoned, the other’s on parole. The third one technically isn’t a war criminal in this dimension or whatever, right? Pretty sure that’s not how this works. But you’re the wizard, Doc, you’d know better than I would.”
Being fair, he supposed he couldn’t assume with any degree of certainty whether or not the man with the silver arm was a war criminal in his own universe. It was just an assumption.
“Do you speak at all? I’d rather not sit around talking about you like you’re not here if you’re willing to answer questions yourself.”
“I speak.” The monotone and succinct response left him to give the vibranium-armed Bucky an uncertain look.
“Yeah, he’s still in the thick of everything. He’s… look, it’s just gonna be like that, okay? It’ll take him some time to come out of it, but he hasn’t been hostile towards anyone since we found him.”
“Not poison.” The words were quiet, but Stephen glanced to the silver-armed Bucky as he took a sip from the teacup before offering it to Zemo. The baron hesitated for a long moment before taking the tea.
“Thank you.” For the first time since they’d arrived, Zemo’s attention seemed to have shifted entirely to focus on the man seated beside him, and the Bucky of this universe rolled his eyes slightly, leaning back in his seat to sip his tea.
“... does someone want to explain to me what that was about?”
“Apparently he likes Zemo.”
“That makes one of us,” Bucky muttered, and Sam shrugged helplessly.
“My handler.”
Stephen couldn’t begin to place what that meant, but apparently it meant something quite important if the way everyone else in the room sat up straighter meant anything. He looked between the alarmed looks on Sam and Bucky’s faces, and the distinctly curious one on Zemo’s.
“Handler?” he inquired, cautiously.
“Is that so, vojnik?” Zemo tilted his head slightly, receiving a succinct nod of response. Bucky swore quietly under his breath, and Stephen looked to Sam for answers.
“Uh, so… the Winter Soldier program kinda had people who basically controlled him. Called them handlers.”
“Way to oversimplify,” Bucky growled a bit, getting up and starting to move towards Zemo only to find himself blocked by the silver-armed Bucky standing promptly in his way, his expression cold and serious. “Call him off, Zemo. Or at least put some distance between the two of you. I don’t trust you with him for a fucking second.”
Stephen closed his eyes and sighed heavily, taking a sip of his tea before he stood, the flare of the cloak seeming to catch the attention of those in the room easily enough. “Why don’t one of you take the… soldier here upstairs and help him clean up. He looks like he could use a nice hot shower, and I’d rather none of you were unsupervised.”
“I can–”
“No.” Stephen heard his own voice echoed by both Sam and Bucky, and the chastised look on Zemo’s face stole a slight smile from him.
“I’ll take him up, Doc. Figure it’s probably better if you hear this from Bucky, he and Zemo kinda… know this shit a bit better than I do.”

"You cut your hair," Tavros says. Rough.
"Yeah," Aradia runs her fronds through the shorn strands. "It was getting annoying."
The look of sheer misery that forms on Tavros's face after she says that is so shocking she sits still and looks at him, frondpalm still hovering inches from her face, waiting for him to comment. The expression disappears, but she continues to stare.
"I could have helped," he says. His hair is falling into his eyes and there are woodchips on his shirt.
"I can cut my own hair, thanks," Aradia replies, though she's pretty sure she doesn't know what he means.

Rereading some of my old work at the moment while overall inspiration is low. I was considering blogging some of them chapter by chapter. I could examine what my intent was, what I think worked, what I think didn't work, what I find embarrassing now, etc. Anyone actually interested in anything like that? A little forensic journey to help hone skills?
Anyway here's some Ladynoir. From Dog Daze.
She rounded back to him again, her hands balled into fists against his chest and that face that was so full of anger swinging back to sadness again. “No! Don’t you see? Everyone has only so much patience. You keep them waiting too long and then they just move on and you’re left panicking wondering where you went wrong!”
Cat Noir had the feeling they weren’t talking about Shadowmoth anymore. “M’Lady?”
Ladybug flinched, looking away. Cat Noir brought his hands up. He was halfway into a gentle embrace to comfort her when she whispered, “I’m sorry, Cat Noir.”
Cat Noir paused, but Ladybug didn’t. She lunged up at him, one hand catching the back of his neck and pulling him down. Their lips met in a collision more than a kiss, and Cat Noir’s barely ordered world came undone.
For a single moment it was everything he had prayed for. His body was on fire, and his imagination locked away a crystalized image of the moment; sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch. Years from now he would still be able to recall the sound of a bus’s air brakes below them as clearly as all the rest. Ladybug’s touch, her warmth, the dreams of a year made real at last.
The moment passed, and the Cat Noir he was now was not the same as a year ago. He knew things, felt things, understood things that he had not before. Even as his hands settled on Ladybug’s hips, he felt her pull again at his neck. It was desperation, not passion. It was fear that made her lips tremble, not excitement. This revelation chilled him, and Cat Noir withdrew, pulling against her grip and pushing gently to break the contact.
She curled against his chest, and with that he pulled her back in. She was still trembling, worse perhaps than at Shadowmoth's ultimatum. “Cat Noir, I love you.”
For a second time she shocked him out of his own body. This time though, he was more prepared. The words were the same as the reality he had longed for, but the joy was absent. He squeezed her in his arms again and kept silent. He felt there was more.
There was. Ladybug eventually raised her head, looking him in the eyes. She reached up to cup his cheek. “I have for a while now. Against my better judgment, against my desires, against all the rules, I fell in love. I held it in because what would be the point? You and I cannot know each other. You and I are only masks. That is how it must be. I need you, Cat Noir, I need you as my partner. I couldn’t give you up, even for love.”

Zero Context WIP Game
I have been tagged again, and so I shall share again! Thank you for the tag, @barbex.
If you’re tagged, make a new post and share 1-2 (a few) sentences from your most recent unposted WIP(s) with zero context – Let your followers guess!
I never knew your parents well. Difficult people to get to know, my father would say. I suppose the same could be said of you, my dear… but you know I always relished a challenge. You got me to pick up a book… I got you to hit back now and again, even if it was with a carbuncle rather than your fists. The first time you gave one of those little shites a whack with its tail and sent 'em scrambling! Now, that made me proud.
Tagging: @delicatefade @ir0n-angel @bluewren @crackinglamb @warpedlegacy and anyone else who'd like to play today!

Anyone want a little tease for the story I'm working on? I have some unexpected time this morning due to one baseball game being rained out...
**
“Your gun, Doctor Reid.”
There was a brief moment where Hotch could only focus on the wide, white eyes of the other man. He saw fear there and he frowned. “You do have your gun, right?”
“I do...” Reid replied quietly. “I won't need it will I?” He was suddenly overcome by the intensity of how wrong he was for this job. It should be Morgan. This was a Hotch and Morgan job, it just was. They do this stuff. They take down the unsubs, they keep ice packs and heating pads and bottles of Advil on hand. They compare scars and bruises like trophies of a job well done. Hotch was still nursing a sore shoulder and he could faintly detect the slightest hint of a limp hanging on in Morgan's stride. He didn't know the stories but he could put it together fairly easily and he'd only been part of the BAU officially for a few weeks. No, this job was way over his head...he should be with Gideon, or at the precinct working through the stacks of files and maps, anywhere but here in the middle of a vast maze of storage units that could be concealing any number of horrors and needing to use his gun.
“Just watch your back. I'll try to be quick.”
And this is where the rats come in.

May I have a ☕?
Of course!!!
this is from TLC; in which Ru is sick and has a bit of an odd dream---
“Huh….?” The man’s golden eyes were wide.
The stranger smirked, flipping his hat, “what’s ever the matter, old man?” he teased, a large wolfish grin. Arulius frowned. This young man. A boy really to him. Why was he so cocky, so familiar?
“What…” Arulius coughed, gasping when he felt himself pushed back by the cane of the other, similar golden eyes sparkling with delight.
“I can’t believe I finally found one. I knew I would if I messed around enough! Sadly though, you're not the one I’m looking for, shameful really, how on earth can I rely this to Mari and Lav?” he lamented as he tilted his head.
“Ah!” Arulius realized what was biting his brain. Why this boy seemed to be familiar.
His mannerisms.
He shared Eclipse’s mannerisms.
The lopsided smile with teeth like a wolf, the way he tilted his head to the side and the mass of curls bounced. But not just that…
He saw himself in this young man.
The eyes like a sunflower, the cocky smile that replaced the wolfish grin, his fangs were even closer to his own. The ringlets in his hair, reminded the former prince of when his hair used to get far too long in the summer but a tighter curl like Eclipse’s.
“Oh!” the stranger smiled with a laugh, gloved hand to his mouth, “Did you connect the dots old man?”
“A-are you my…?”
“Not yours specifically.” The stranger gave a disappointed sigh, “I wish. But in another life, another time, You were in fact my father.” he winked, “Can you guess my mother?”
Arulius felt his face burning up. He gulped and covered his mouth, “enjoyable…”
“Simp. you’ve always been a simp for mom.” the stranger snickered, phone ringing. He used his foot to push Arulius back towards the cliff edge, “but you really shouldn’t be here.”
“Wai---”
