Oh, thank you! I was really fond of my Vanozza fic, though unsurprised that it was largely overshadowed by the others. I did have a plan for the rest that I never got around to, and ... hmm, it's hard to say. I'm more likely to finish that one than any of my other Borgias fic, but if I do ever get back to it, it will be awhile.

Questions for Fic Writers!

10 & 12?

Sorry it took a while to reply! 10. How do you decide what to write? Usually there's an idea lurking somewhere that finally sticks its head up and goes ME ME ME. I keep a list of "hmm" things - for fanfic, what are moments that are unclear to me (whether it's a char's motivation, or the fallout of an event, or a dialogue line, or 'what does this imply about the world') or a "haha wouldn't it be cool if", and go from there. Like right now, I have a MK Wild West AU idea that started with seeing 'arranged marriage' on a prompts list, wondering how to do it, and it really wants to be 'take Sonya and Johnny and Kano and Erron and Jax and Nightwolf and maybe Liu Kang and Kung Lao and put them in the American frontier and explore all these juicy dynamics'. And then there's Apothecary Diaries and "haha Maomao and Shisui are nerds together, they need to have a playdate".

12. Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you?

Hmm. I used to really not like soulmates but got converted/turned onto it by friends and some great examples of it. The sheer amount of worldbuilding you can tuck away in "what happens if people are colorblind until/unless they meet X criteria"? What does that say about film/television, fashion, medical care (how do you see a discoloration?), even traffic and warning signs? Another one is omegaverse, because there's all the smut - and there's also all the worldbuilding because of how the dynamics would affect day-to-day life. How would first responders handle things if someone was in rut/heat? How about HR in a business for days off for heat/rut reasons? What kind of changes would you see in parental leave if something like mpreg was extant in a patriarchal society (like our current one) - or what kind of overall societal changes would you see? How would social classes form in/around the secondary alpha/beta/omega designations - would only people who didn't respond to/have heats and ruts be eligible for certain roles? Would only omegas be responsible for a certain role, or alphas? How's something different if it's an alpha-dominant setting, versus beta-dominant or omega-dominant? etc. ... so I guess some of the "lol unrealistic" tropes get me excited because of all the worldbuilding inherent in them if you treat them seriously. Like, how would life be different if you had a matching tattoo when you were born? Would there be databases of tattoos? Would parents find their childrens' soulmates immediately and be in touch? What would happen if someone didn't approve of the soulmate? What drama could you cause there? ... and then that cycles back to question 10 and my answer for it. Eventually one of those ideas goes "OH YEAH" and then I find myself writing it.

THE CORNER WHERE YOUR HEART BREAKS - It's blinding. The dream is always devastatingly bright. Your fragmented mind can barely hold onto the most basic concepts, but remembers this scene with alarming clarity. A familiar street corner in the early morning, the backdrop to the worst day of your life. 

PERCEPTION [Easy: Success] - "Video Revachol" is spelled out in red, ramshackle letters against a familiar building's white siding. Through dusty windows, you can see the titles of movies you watched a lifetime ago. Dogs bark in the distance, the sound carried on the same cold wind that touches your cheeks. You tremble like a fawn.

CONCEPTUALIZATION - The neighbourhood has gone to seed. A garden of regrets. She stands in the centre of it all, and you cannot look away.

RHETORIC - No, no more regrets. We can convince her to stay this time. Even if it’s just a dream, we have to try.

THE CORNER WHERE YOUR HEART BREAKS - You’ve been trying, but the conversation never changes. You make the same mistakes over, and over, and over again. The wind picks up, catching loose strands of her golden hair.

DOLORES DEI - Her beauty cuts you like shattered glass. She's a reflection of everything that's hurt you, a mirror in a million pieces. She's the sun setting on your future.

INLAND EMPIRE - She's not your future anymore. I tried to warn you. 

VOLITION [Legendary: Failure] - Shut up, just shut up. He's in enough pain as is.

1. "I know you still love me." (Kiss her)

YOU - The words are small and shaky, fueled by desperation, but you can’t stop them. You move automatically, unable to stop yourself from reaching out.

REACTION SPEED [Impossible: Failure] - No, don't—

DELORES DEI - Her eyes widen as yours close, your hands cupping her cheeks. She's so, so soft. The kiss lands, but it isn't reciprocated. 

ENCYCLOPEDIA - You knew it wouldn't be. It never changes.

YOU - "You're not… kissing me back." The words hurt, just like the first time you said them. You can't open your eyes yet.

SUGGESTION - I fail you every time. 

DOLORES DEI - She doesn’t meet your eyes, pulling her delicate cheeks from your hard, calloused hands. Golden hair pours out from beneath her wreath. You want to tuck the long, brilliant strands behind her ears. You want her to love you like you love her.

YOU - "That's it, then." 

SUGGESTION - Every fucking time.

DOLORES DEI - “No, Harry. Not yet. There's one more thing you have to see." Her eyes cast down, and your face pales. 

PAIN THRESHOLD - Brace yourself. You can survive this.

HALF LIGHT [Legendary: Failure] - No – no you can't! This will kill you. 

ENDURANCE [Impossible: Success] - Maybe someday, but not now. You know what she’s going to say. It helps to soften the blow, if only a little. 

DOLORES DEI - Her hands slide over her perfect chest, barely disturbing the fabric of her dress as they rest on her stomach. 

DOLORES DEI - "You know what this means." Her voice is flat and uninquisitive. She's so fucking beautiful. Just like the last time you were here, like every other time. Her hands are perched gently on her abdomen, emphasising a barely noticeable bump between the cradle of her hips. 

PERCEPTION [Legendary: Failure] - Look away. Please, look away. There's nothing here you haven't seen. It'll always hurt you. Try to make it hurt a little less. Look away. 

1. "Is it mine?" 2. "It's his, the man I heard on the phone?" 3. "It's not mine." 

YOU - The words are familiar, leaving your mouth in a tumble before you can stop them. You can feel tears welling in your eyes. This is the kind of pain that doesn't build a callous. It just stays raw. The scene is blurring at its edges - you can't make out the name of the video store anymore. Even Delores — No, Dora, her name is Dora — is starting to become hazy. 

YOU - Please… Please, no. I don't want to cry. 

INLAND EMPIRE - You don't have a choice. 

VOLITION - I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I should have kept you safe. 

DOLORES DEI - "Of course not." She looks down at her belly, then up into your old eyes. You've had this dream twice since Martinaise. You know what she says next. She doesn't smile. Her stained glass lungs breathe easy as you struggle to inhale. A lone tear spills over, wandering down your blemished cheek. 

DOLORES DEI - "I terminated yours. Don't you remember, you poor fu—"

??? - "Khm… Let's stick to the topic at hand."

PERCEPTION [Easy: Failure] - What the absolute fuck was that?

INLAND EMPIRE [Godly: Success] - An interloper. 

PAIN THRESHOLD - As you pivot, the world becomes a blur of colours and tears. Is there anything that could devastate you more than this moment? Is it her new boyfriend? Fiance? Husband? 

HALF LIGHT - You want to fucking die.

??? - There's a flash of orange. A figure smaller than yourself. Round, dark-rimmed glasses. The quiet scratching as he writes in a blue notebook.

ENCYCLOPEDIA [Medium: Success] - Sudden recognition.

KIM KITSURAGI - He's… here. But how? And why? You open your mouth dumbly, tears flowing in rivulets into your thick mutton chops. 

KIM KITSURAGI - "Perhaps we should depart for now." He closes his notebook quietly. "It's time to wake up."

YOU - "What—"
