Day 5, Fiddleheads
Late because I wanted to paint this one really bad. It ended up not what I wanted so I went a bit ham on the editing. . .

To celebrate the summer solstice I did my annual hike of Sugarloaf Path. It’s become a tradition at this point to hike the trail in its entirety at the beginning of the season. It was a bit on the cool side but still lovely to witness.
June 21st 2023.

My first fiddlehead quiche of the season! Spring is here at last!
Fiddleheads only appear at the end of April/beginning of May. Once they unfurl into a fern they are inedible for the most part. I always anxiously await the first fiddleheads of the year! Found them recently at $15/lb (are they out of their fucking minds?), and was able to get them at $10/lb - which will make about 2 quiches.

The spring and warm weather is officially here in New England. The proof is our dinner. At least once every year we have a nice big serving of fresh fiddleheads. They’re one of the best spring foraging veg. They occasionally show up in shops and we saw them for the first time this last weekend. They are ferns that haven’t unfurled yet. They are amazing and sort of like asparagus but not. To me, they taste like spring is here. The only thing about them is 1/. You must cook them for at least ten minutes. And 2/. You can’t eat to many or have them too often as they are toxic. So you get some you wash them and cut the end of the stems off. We steam them (12 minutes) them eat them with butter and (if you like) salt and pepper. Here’s a tour of the dinner.

could fiddlehead fur make for fiber?
we wanna test and research the capabilities - how absorbent, does it take on dye? Is it ecologically sustainable? it feels like a cotton wool blend.
