SHELBY GOODKIND + COSTUMES

BLUE as a color represents being composed, non-confrontational, and organized. in the show specifically, shelby wears this color when she is going with expectations, fulfilling her role, and trying to placate those around her.

notable moments include: her two interactions with andrew, the pageant performance, and the scene with her father in the kitchen. additionally, in the opening kitchen scene of episode 8, shelby’s entire family is wearing blue while she wears pink.

PINK as a color represents “innocence meets lust.” shelby wears the color pink when she is questioning herself, struggling with her identity vs. who she thinks she’s supposed to be, or being torn between blue and yellow.

notable moments include: walking in on her father’s conversion therapy support group (in which you overhear him praying in a direct parallel to the previous scene on the island), the ‘death of a salesman’ monologue of episode 4, the “i see you” scene with toni, and their first kiss.

YELLOW as a color represents happiness, learning, and logic. shelby wears the color yellow when she is at her happiest, or in a moment of extreme (positive) character development. usually, both of these things are happening at the same time.

notable moments include: the bowling alley with becca, rehearsing the pageant song (which later parallels to shelby wearing blue for the actual pageant), the lychee tree scene, and the discussion with toni on the cliff. she also removes her jacket to show a yellow shirt in the episode 1 scene with martha, but then quickly rips it up to bind martha’s ankle.

the JEAN JACKET represents being in the closet, or the confines of her family’s expectations. it is a consistent costume piece for shelby, which comes and goes throughout the island, as well as in flashback scenes.

chronologically, the first time we see shelby wear the jacket, it is after her discussion with her father, in which he essentially scares her into continuing to hide herself. the next time we see her, she’s wearing the jacket for the porch scene with becca. during that scene, she vehemently denies everything, and pushes becca away any way she can.

she also wears the jacket on the plane, in which her facade is the strongest it gets in the island timeline. underneath the jacket is a yellow shirt, possibly foreshadowing her development. after the crash, she takes the jacket off momentarily to help martha, but quickly puts it back on.

in episode 2, the jacket is completely buttoned up.

the jacket gives way to pink outfits for a couple episodes, but is back after oyster-gate. shelby wears the jacket from then until her beach scene with leah, in which leah forces her to reveal her flipper. however, the jacket comes off when she is alone in the woods, and stays off through when she and toni have their first kiss.

however, after she believes they are going to be saved (end of episode 7), it is almost as though she wants to undo all the growth she did in preparation of going back home, and the jacket represents her “regression.” from the opening of episode 8, she wears the jacket throughout. in her conversation with toni, she attempts denial much like she did the porch scene with becca.

the last time we see the jacket is in the hair-cutting scene. not only does this scene possibly include religious themes, it also could be a reference to the philosophical tale of siddhartha, who cut his hair to symbolize rejecting his father/family, his old life, and to embrace his new way of living.
