i’ve also been thinking about the fall garden and next years garden. i’m a planner, i can’t help it. this is what i do. as i’ve mentioned before, we’re adding on to the garden sometime this year. we currently have three rows for veggies/annuals, and we’re adding two more.
i’ve got a running list of new things to grow this fall/next year since we’ll have more space:
potatoes (i don’t count my partners experiment haha) (spring)
sweet potatoes (summer)
cabbage (this fall)
along with some new varieties for veggies im already growing. in addition to planning for new veggies, i’m thinking about what we need for repeat veggies. garlic, for example.
when i bought our garlic last year, it was super late in the season and there weren’t many options left. i ended up going with a hardneck that i don’t know much about. maybe it’ll be fine, but generally hardnecks don’t do well in the south. they usually need a period of cold in order to form a head. cold weather here is inconsistent, if it exists at all. so maybe in a month or so we’ll end up with beautiful heads of garlic. but i’m not holding my breath.
i did my research and found some good softnecks to try this year along with a hardneck that might do well here. the hardneck i really wanted to try was already sold out, but it’s not a big deal because i was able to get plenty of the two softnecks i wanted, and since i’m counting on those to be my big producers i’m still happy with what i ended up with. i ordered from filaree garlic farm and i’m excited. i can check this off of my to-do list and move on to some other things.

Specialty garlic can seem dear; nonetheless, keep in mind you only want to buy seed stock once, as garlic is certainly one of the easiest crops to be self-ample in. To find out if you have enough natural matter in the soil to sustain good fertility and development it is advisable observe the biological community. An preliminary remedy, as a primary-step, is to focus on the quantity and quality of organic matter that can feed the appetite of an earthworm. These bulbs get off to a a lot slower start within the spring, resulting in smaller measurement and an inferior stock for those who need to be self-sufficient and replant their own the following fall. I didn’t see a great variety of vernal pool flowers when I visited Phoenix Park last Tuesday, but the aptly named Goldfields are blanketing the depressions, accentuated by a few pale pink Checkermallow. I also noticed (but didn’t photograph) quite a lot of yellow Fiddleneck and Butter ‘n eggs, and the small invasive pink-purple Filaree are literally everywhere. My personal favorites, the Spokepod…
