on the topic of flawed characters, there's one that will always shock me at how much hate he got. i'm talking about lars from st/even universe. like yeah, he was a jerk and all, but even from the beginning we saw there was more to him. lars is incredibly insecure and socially anxious and it's implied that he's depressed as well (none of these things excuse his behavior!). and lars was often punished throughout the show, by steven, ronaldo, and even sadie. and yet lars was always seen in the wrong.

lars was probably the MOST hated character in the entirety of su. hell, ppl hated him more than they hated the diamonds or gems like jasper. ppl would legitimately send DEATH THREATS to lars/larsadie fans. i remember that very clearly. i wasn't a big lars fan back then but i already liked him. lars was like the show's equivalent of s/quidward, who's also my fave in s/pongebob.

i related a lot to lars, too. i was a lot like him as a teen. i still am a bit like him - sarcastic, grumpy, insecure yet still very passionate about my interests - but yeah, if you related to lars, you were seen as a horrible person. the fandom only started liking him when lars DIED and became a cool space captain. but as soon as lars relapsed (or when he thought sadie was trying to get back at him for hanging out with the cool kids), ppl were ready to hate on him again.

honestly, even now that lars is liked, i still get ppl leaving their opinions on my lars art ("ugh i HATED lars when i first watched the show but he's cool now"), and i hate that very much. i hate that i'm not allowed to like lars without ppl still hammering in my head how much they hated or still dislike him. i wouldn't comment that on your art of your fave, i would just make my own damn post or just leave my opinion to myself. that's like saying "i hate this ship but cool art".

another important factor to note is that lars is not white. even in like 2015, one of the crew members confirmed that. and later we find out lars is filipino (and it IS confirmed onscreen when lars bakes an ube cake). he is in fact a mentally ill character of color. and that's exactly what makes ppl hate him, besides the fact lars isn't conventionally attractive. bc i know fans would drool over him if that were the case (and especially if he were white). you COULD say lars is the equivalent of spop kyle, both pathetic and skinny boys, except lars is not white, and he's snarky and short-tempered, but it is implied he was bullied or mistreated at some point in his childhood, too.

and of course, there are other actual flawed characters of color who get unfair hate, like katara, korra (though i haven't seen lok), diane from bojack, and glimmer. which angers me when ppl stan catra and they accuse you of being racist or ableist if you criticize her.

you guys. do not. give a fuck. about ACTUAL characters of color. you will just hate them too! fuck off with that performative bullshit.

Relationships

Platonic/Familial:

Lanes and Larry (nickname Lars or Lars Bar) got really close during middle school. They found comfort with each other bc they were in similar situations regarding their crushes. They'd sneak off after band practice to rant to each other about their band leaders and just wallow in self-pity. And that didn't really change as they got older. If anything, they got even closer, acting more like siblings than friends—they even got similar/mirroring piercings to match and wear coordinated outfits—, constantly ranting to or annoying each other at any opportunity. However, their audience doesn't really believe that it's just that (having given both of them the titles of casanovas for dating each other and their band leaders). And neither does Corey. Which, as you can probably guess, often leads being a point of contention between them.

Kim and Konnie: I've made them really close cousins. Why?. Because I can! jk jk but tbch I just wanted to add some variety in the lineup's dynamics. I'm also playing with the idea of one of them being half-white and the other being half-Filipino and having them be raised in different households to see how that would affect the different ways in which they'd interact. They are still close like sisters and each other's best friends, they were born on the same day and wear matching hair ties like friendship bracelets, but I want them to have things about them that make them different from being exact copies of their counterparts. However, this is definitely subject to change as I explore the concept more.

Corey and Carrie: acquaintances. Over the years their rivalry has seriously mellowed out and are more or less pleasant with each other. They will tease each other from time to time but that's kind of just what you do when you've known someone as long as they have.

Mina and Trina: Not quite sure where to put this one lol. Their relationship imploded senior year when Mina confessed to her and Trina responded in the worst way possible. Now Mina is doing school abroad and Trina had to repeat her last year. No one really knows what happened but rumor has it that Mina had said something so bad to Trina that it made her completely break. She doesn't hang out with anyone and she rarely, if ever, talks. She spends all her time alone in her room or at her job that nobody is even really sure she has.

Romantic:

Kon and Konnie: they are just happy and cute together. They started hanging out together more during sophomore year when Konnie's gym closed down and she had to go to a new one. They were definitely more awkward at first, they didn't really dislike each other but their friends did so they kind of just...didn't interact, but once they actually started talking they found they got along really well! They would often spot for the other and offer encouragement when working out. Inevitably they caught feelings and tried dating in secret. But that didn't last long (bc ofc it didn't lol) and they got caught. Both bands were more irritated than mad but eventually got over it.

Kin and Kim: a bickering old married couple. they are constantly 'breaking up' and then getting back together the next day. They are snarky and live for drama and gossip. They both think that the other is more in love with them and can control them bc of it. In reality, they are both equally whipped for each other but refuse to admit it. They constantly 'fight' to show that they aren't in love then somehow always fail miserably every time. They haven't made their relationship public and hopefully never will. They like having their fans think they're single and that if they found out it would ruin their images as the mysterious prince and princess of their respective groups. The bands' reactions to them range from exasperated eye rolls to mocking laughter.

Larry (yes, I'm sticking to calling him Larry) and Carrie: ??? Larry adores Carrie and she knows this. He makes it very clear and is willing to do almost anything for her. But how Carrie feels for Larry is unclear, at least that's what he says to Laney. She will treat him like a best friend and they'll hang out alone without problem, but she will have this weird distance about her that she doesn't close. That is until the cameras come on. During interviews and shoots, she will pull him close to her and say things that can be easily interpreted and romantic, but when asked to specify she will laugh and deflect the question. Then, once the cameras are off, she goes right back to being distant. He is unsure whether or not she actually likes him romantically or is just refusing to clarify for the sake of the band, but he'll lean into her touch whenever or wherever it's given. He seems to have come to terms with this being their dynamic and just...goes with it. There is one thing he knows for certain, he loves her and regardless of whether or not she cares for him romantically, he will stay by her side no matter what. Oddly enough, whenever the topic of Larry and Laney's relationship is brought up, Carrie refuses to talk about it. To be honest, she'll act like she has no idea what they're talking about and bluntly steer the conversation towards literally anything else.

Laney and Corey: Contradictory. Laney has essentially given up on forming a romantic bond with Corey. However, her actual feelings don't seem to have gotten the memo. She still cares for him so much it hurts. So much so that she's come to terms with the fact that she will never be able to be with anyone romantically because of it. Laney used to love the high of being in love, floaty and light, and now she feels more like a suffering addict, lost and panicked. She drowns in every touch and caress given to her but at the same time feels burned and scorned every time she realizes how simple and platonic they are. She can't blame him for not liking her back, but she's come to resent him for it. Just a little bit. She sometimes even wishes she had never met Corey. Constantly thinking about the life she could have had had she not been pulled into the living whirlpool that was Corey. She loves him, and he doesn't know it. But he holds her closer than anyone else. He is possessive of her and her attention. Whenever it's directed towards someone else, Larry especially, he pulls her back into him and refuses to let her go. This makes it even more unlikely for her to move on, in fact, it makes her angry. They argue about it often.

I have the beginnings of several scenes that explore these relationships and stuff but I'm not too sure I wanna share them just yet ^^; (my creative writing skill is a bit more than a little lacking lol)

Minty is excitable and bubbly. She's a kind-hearted, friendly, and cheerful spooky goth girl. She can be one-track minded, especially when it comes to anything related to the supernatural. This can make Minty seem rude when she’s just bulldozing right past someone’s point or attempt at changing the topic. She’s a little too confident in her knowledge of the occult, believing she can handle whatever is thrown at her because she’s seen a lot of scary movies. She’d never be “stupid” like a horror movie character would be.

She’s a healthy skeptic. She doesn’t believe everything she hears and prefers to investigate before she buys into something. She knows there are a lot of scam artists out there that will take advantage of people who believe in the supernatural.

Minty desperately wants to find proof of ghosts and the afterlife. So far, she’s come up empty and that disappoints her.

Ingrid is soft-spoken and timid. She can be shy, but once she feels comfortable, she loves to talk! She seems like she would be the polar opposite of Minty, but she’s just as into horror, spooky things, and alternative culture. She just also really likes cutesy things and romance movies.

Most of her tattoos are also very easy to hide with clothing, making her appear more conservative than she actually is. While she's gained respect in the tattoo community, she does still stick out like a sore thumb among her own.

She’s a pushover and she lacks assertiveness. While she’ll always come through in a clutch, she is the easiest to scare. She must overcome her intense fears to help Minty go toe-to-toe with O'Malley the Smiling Demon. She's the type of person who forces herself to power through her terror. Ingrid is incredibly kind and she has a strong sense of empathy.

She believes in the paranormal and she takes it deathly serious. She will often butt heads with Minty over not being cautious enough. She and Laura don't always agree on matters of the supernatural, but immensely respect each other.

Bex is a little weird. You have to be a little weird when you’re raised in a white trash family in the middle of nowhere. Bex is intelligent, but flippant. Not very many things upset her, but when they do anger her, she goes from 0 to 60 in the blink of an eye. She can typically diffuse tense situations simply by a lack of reaction or by telling a joke. She generally keeps a cool head, so much so it seems like she doesn’t care. In reality, she’s tired. She’s seen some shit and she is over it.

She's friendly yet apathetic to most people when she meets them at first. She doesn't hate a lot of people either. Someone would really have to press her buttons or give her a reason to hate them. She struggles to trust people on a deeper level, yet she continues to seek out connection with others. Under all her bluster, she has a good heart. She's just used to taking care of herself with little to no help from anybody else.

She’s blunt, but she’s never intentionally hurtful. Sometimes she just sucks at wording herself. She’s never been one to brush off someone else’s hurt feelings with “I’m just being honest” either.

Her life is mostly ruled by giving into the existential dread and some form of nihilism, which can make it difficult for her to form and maintain relationships with people.

I reimagined my characters in a Resident Evil AU! Honestly, my characters from @thebonnevillegame probably fit right in as is.

In order to make life easier for me, lore-wise, they were all pulled in by the same event. It’s an event that doesn’t exist on the canon timeline. This allowed me some freedom without worrying about if I was messing up canon. I'm not as up to date on all of the RE canon as of late.

I’ve decided to refer to it as The Bonneville Incident. It's a t-virus event that took out a small town in Pennsylvania. These guys somehow managed to survive it.

Araminta "Minty" Lam

Minty’s parents survived the 1998 outbreak. After escaping Raccoon City, Mr and Mrs. Lam moved to a small Pennsylvania town called Bonneville to lie low. They wanted to just have a quiet life and, for several years, they got their wish. Minty and her older sister, Trophie, never knew her parents survived Raccoon City. Trophie had no memory of the incident from her childhood.

Minty and Trophie would only find out about Raccoon City when Bonneville was hit with a t-virus outbreak. Minty and her family had to escape the small town they loved so dearly. They were joined by Minty’s best friends, Laura and Ingrid, and the next door neighbor, Bex. Minty would lose her father during the escape and she never totally recovered from the loss.

This would lead to most of them going on to work for the BSAA in some capacity after the incident. Prior to the outbreak, Minty was a graphic designer, but she adapted to her new line of work rather quickly. She's determined to keep others from being hurt the way she was by the outbreak.

Personality: Minty is excitable and bubbly. She's a kind-hearted, friendly, and cheerful spooky goth girl. She can be one-track minded. This can make Minty seem rude when she’s just bulldozing right past someone’s point or ignoring someone's attempt at changing the subject. When it comes to topics she’s fascinated by, she can be a little too much of a know-it-all sometimes.

Laura had a traumatic childhood that she refuses to talk about. I can’t say much else to avoid spoilers for The Bonneville Game, but she had only moved to Bonneville recently before the outbreak. She befriended Minty and Ingrid quickly and worked as an accountant at a real estate agent office. She hunted down Minty and Ingrid to help them both escape. She refused to leave the city without them. She also helped Minty's family and Bex as a result.

She would later become an accountant for the BSAA rather than a full time field agent, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t help out whenever she’s able. She finds herself sometimes sucked into missions by Minty. She just mostly focuses on accounting.

I kept her an accountant because I love the idea of exploring the "boring" jobs in the RE world. Someone has to balance those books. They aren't going to do it themselves. She also loves math, okay?

Ingrid grew up in Bonneville. She's from her father's first marriage and her younger brother, Sebastian, is from her father's second marriage. Ingrid has a strained relationship with her father as he prioritizes his second family, and his current wife absolutely hates Ingrid and her mother. She tries to get along with Sebastian, but they’ve been kept away from one another for most of their lives.

While in high school, Ingrid became interested in tattoos and wanted to become a tattooist. She honed her art skills and, at 18, she secured an apprenticeship at a tattoo shop. She would spend hours cleaning, stocking, sterilizing, drawing, and anything else they needed. They taught her how to tattoo, starting with pig skin and oranges.

She bought gear from one of her coworkers and began practicing on herself. Once the owner of the shop trusted her, she was able to book clients. She’s been tattooing ever since. She was the one to give Laura her first tattoo, cementing their friendship almost immediately.

Everything would change during the outbreak. She would escape with Minty, Laura, Bex, and Minty’s family. Afterward, she hesitantly become a member of the BSAA with them. She refused to let her friends do this alone and she desperately wants to stop an outbreak like that from happening ever again.

In her downtime, she still does tattooing, usually for her fellow agents.

Ingrid doesn’t know what happened to the rest of her family. She will eventually find out her half-brother, Sebastian, also survived.

Bex doesn’t talk about her past a lot. There’s one thing I can’t talk about because it’s spoilers for The Bonneville Game. What I can say is she grew up in a Shameless-like family in Bonneville. Her father, Will, never settled down with any of the women he slept with, including Bex’s mother. Bex is the only McQuoid child to have her father’s surname.

Her father was in and out of prison when she was growing up for robbery, drunk driving, drug use, and assault. Will is also an alcoholic. Her mother, Sauci, was preoccupied with running around with different men as she was desperate for someone to love her. Sauci has her own demons in the form of drug abuse, barbiturates being her drug of choice. Bex practically raised herself.

By the time she met Minty, Bex was working as a cook at a diner called Burger Barn. She lived next door to the Lams when the outbreak occurred. Bex would end up joining their group when she saved Minty from one of their infected neighbors. They agreed to team up to survive the night.

After it was all said and done, Bex was surprised when the BSAA accepted her as an operative. She was also shocked when she discovered she had a strange knack for this new line of work.

Personality: Bex is intelligent, but flippant. Not very many things upset her, but when they do anger her, she goes from 0 to 60 in the blink of an eye. She can typically diffuse tense situations simply by a lack of reaction or by telling a joke. She generally keeps a cool head, so much so it seems like she doesn’t care. In reality, she’s tired. She’s seen some shit and she is over it.

Her life is mostly ruled by giving into the existential dread and some form of nihilism, which can make it difficult for her to form and maintain relationships with people.

Likes: Her dog and cat, animals, money, cooking, baking, discovering new recipes and foods, working out, being outside, collecting cookbooks, oat milk, and reading

Paloma was born in Bonneville. She lost her mother to cancer when she was 2 years old and she was placed in the foster care system. She had no other family that could take her in. As Paloma grew older, she became like an older sister to all of her foster siblings, but she grew particularly close to Lamia Ambler. She and Lamia would age out of the foster system and stay close. Paloma would try to clean up after Lamia’s messes, but eventually there wasn’t anything she could do to save Lamia from herself.

When Lamia went to prison, it was the one time Paloma couldn’t protect her. Paloma made sure to visit her as often as she was allowed and wrote to her frequently. After Lamia was released, Paloma opened up her home to her. Paloma was trying to help get her sister a job when The Bonneville Incident occurred.

When the t-virus hit, Paloma was working as a mortician at the Elm Street Mortuary. Paloma along with her sister, Lamia and newly hired receptionist, Tessa, were on the grounds when the outbreak hit. They were the only survivors from the mortuary.

Afterward, Paloma became consumed with learning more about the virus. She became a DSO researcher. Lamia and Tessa also joined the organization. They were brought into the organization after they were officially evacuated from Bonneville by a DSO agent.

Personality: Paloma is the quintessential older sister. She’s protective, responsible, and determined. She’s also short-tempered, high-strung, and sarcastic.

Paloma has an easier time feeling at peace when she’s out in nature. After losing her mother, she feels as though being alone is safer than letting others get close to her. She even keeps Lamia at a bit of a distance out of fear.

At a young age, she took on a lot of responsibility for the younger kids in foster care. Even after her foster siblings reached adulthood, she continued to clean up after them and care for them like she always did. She has a habit of stepping in and doing things for other people. Paloma believes she has to "earn" the right to be in people's lives, which means taking care of them. She has a very dry sense of humor that can sometimes go over people's heads.

She avoids getting help from others, and she reassures everyone she can take care of everything herself. It's a lot easier for her to ignore her own problems if she spends all of her time solving everyone else's. She actually gains a lot of pride and satisfaction from taking care of other people. She just needs to learn to take care of herself... and let other people take care of her every once in a while.

Lamia never knew her parents. She doesn't even know if they’re still alive or not. She was a baby when she first entered foster care. This is where she met Paloma who became like an older sister to her. Lamia never trusted the adults or any other authority figures. Paloma was the only exception.

Lamia was a trouble maker, even as a child. She always had schemes to try to figure out ways to get money or to get out of doing things she hated. She knew money could buy her some level of happiness and she was willing to do anything to get it.

This obsession with money continued into adulthood. She wasn’t above conning people out of their money, defrauding people, or just outright stealing. Paloma tried to get her to stop to no avail. It would eventually catch up to her when she was arrested for fraud, counterfeiting, and forgery. Paloma was the only person who kept in contact with her after she went to prison. She did befriend fellow prisoner, Tessa Chastain, when she was in there.

When Tessa was released before her, Lamia convinced Paloma to help get her a job. Lamia had only been recently released when the Bonneville outbreak happened. She hadn’t found a job yet. During the outbreak, Lamia stepped up to the plate to protect her sister and friend, helping them escape Bonneville unscathed.

When it was all said and done, Lamia realized taking a position with the DSO was better than trying to scramble for some "normie job." She agreed to work for them although she does struggle to fit in. It’s been an exercise in learning to trust people, and she’s learning more about how to be empathetic.

Personality: Lamia considers herself as more intelligent than most people. She’s smug and her ego is often her downfall. She likes to be perceived as tough as nails and cocky, but she’s a lot more sensitive than she lets on. It doesn’t take much to hurt her feelings. She can be callous toward strangers and acquaintances. She assumes people are cruel until proven otherwise, so why go out of your way to help anyone?

Lamia has the skills and brains to take care of herself. It’s just that her bloated sense of self-importance always lands her in hot water. This is a shield she's put up as someone with abandonment issues. It eroded her ability to trust or even believe people will stay in her life.

But in spite of all of that, she's loyal and never turns on her allies. Her softer side comes out around Paloma. She slowly learns how to be more empathetic over time. When she realizes people do care for her, she becomes less afraid of letting people in and seeing her be vulnerable.

Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, she was raised in what was, more or less, a criminal family. She has five older brothers, including her twin brother, Leander. Her mother was a waitress who dreamed of being a writer, but abandoned that dream to raise her children. Her father was a repeat offender in Fairbanks. Tessa's father has been arrested for drugs, theft, and burglary. (He's also gotten in trouble for getting into a lot of bar fights.) He's the one that pulled his own children into a life of crime and Tessa's criminal history began when she was a kid.

She would eventually go to prison for grand theft. Tessa was arrested and tried in Bonneville because that's where she happened to be when the authorities found her. As a result, she was incarcerated in Bonneville. She met and befriended Lamia in prison. Upon release, Lamia’s sister, Paloma, helped her get a job at the mortuary. She would be a receptionist. She had only started working there when the t-virus outbreak hit.

She managed to escape town with Paloma and Lamia. After a chance run in with a DSO agent, the three of them were hired at the DSO. Tessa is determined to get revenge on behalf of everyone who was killed.

Whenever she has any downtime, she uses it to write the novel she hopes to one day publish. It’s a fiction novel that has nothing to do with the whacky world she’s gotten herself into. She has been toying with writing a novel with everything she knows about a lot of the bioterrorism going on in the world, but so far she hasn’t felt the spark drawing her to that kind of work.

Unbeknownst to her, her twin, Leander, works for the Family.

Personality: She's always overflowing with joyful enthusiasm. Tessa is outgoing and funny. She has a big heart and it’s easy to take advantage of it, especially with a good enough sob story. She has a good-natured sense of humor, but she can get in a good zinger on her friends.

She’s also not averse to dark humor. When she’s angry or hurt, or just talking to someone she hates, she can be particularly cold and scathing with her jokes. When Tessa gets stuck on something, like an idea or desire, she'll get obsessed with it and she’ll remain laser focused on it. This can sometimes become a detriment when she refuses to let things go.

She’s incredibly loyal. Once you’re in her good graces, she is ride or die. She's impulsive. She'll act first and then realize how stupid her actions were after it’s too late to take it back. She's the type of person to go full mama bear when children are threatened.

She’s a romantic at heart and she’s looking for true love. Unfortunately, due to being so eager to find love, she’s jumped into some terrible relationships. Those closest to her will often acknowledge (or joke about) the fact that she overlooks a lot of red flags in the early stages of a relationship.

Tessa has daddy issues. Her father takes advantage of her and she’s desperate to earn his approval. She ties her self-worth to other people’s opinion of her. She often falls for terrible people because she’s so desperate to be loved. Her father never really showed her what it’s like to be properly cared for.

She also has an unusual relationship with stealing. If she doesn't think there's a "true victim," she doesn't see any harm in it.

10 Uncommonly Use Filipino Words

Tsubibo (Carousel)

Definition: An amusement park ride consisting of a rotating circular platform with seats for riders

Sentence Example: Paboritong sakyan ni forres ang tsubibo sa amusement park.

English Translation: Forres' favorite ride is the Carousel at the amusement park.

Pasamada (Toothpaste)

Definition: It is a paste or gel used with a toothbrush to maintain the health of the teeth

Sentence Example: Si lars ay walang pang-bili ng pamasada

English Translation: Lars don't have money to buy a toothpaste.

Pulot-Gata (Honeymoon)

Definition : A period of unusual harmony especially following the establishment of a new relationship.

Sentence Example : Ang bagong kasal ay trip nilang mag pulot-gata dahil wala silang magawa.

English Translation : The newlyweds go on a honeymoon trip because they have nothing to do.

Irog (Love ones)

Definition : A dearly loved person

Sentence Example : Ang pagmamahal ko sa iyo ay awangan.

Panibugho (Jealousy)

Definition: Jealousy

Sentence Example : Ako ay nakaramdam ng labis na panibugho nung binigyan ka niya ng candy.

English Translation: I feel jelousy, when he gave you the candy.

Sambat (Fork)

Definition : An implement with two or more prongs used especially for taking up (as in eating), pitching, or digging.

Sentence Example : Kailangan pa ba kitang saksakin ng sambat? para manahimik ka.

English Translation: Do I need to stab you a fork? just to make your mouth shut.

Durungawan (Window)

Definition : An opening especially in the wall of an opening especially in a building for admission of light and air thatis usually closed by casementsor sashes containingtransparent material (such as glass) and capable of beingopened and shut

Sentence Example : Siya ay dumudungaw sa durungawan, upang makita ang aking gwapong mukha.

English Translation : He was looking through the window, to see my handsome face.

Alpas (Escape)

Definition: To become free; to break loose

Sentence Example : Gusto niyang umalpas mula sa pagkakakulong sa banyo.

English Translation : He wants to break free from getting locked up inside the restroom.

These are just 10 of the many more uncommonly used Filipino words. There are still a lot more but I hope this somehow helps a lot. Remember, these words are the indicator of our being Filipinos so let us all be proud!
