What keeps you awake at night?

Dear Reader,

We're down to 38 days until Christmas! But before getting bejeweled with all these shining, shimmering, and splendid things, let's talk about your labyrinth thoughts or what keeps you awake at midnight rain?

Hello there! Welcome to a November Mayhem with me which I will be talking about the things that keep me awake at midnight aside from being an architecture student procrastinating her plates. If you're a Swifties, I know you catch that clues.

On the last 21st of October 2022, our godmother T.S. released her 10th studio album titled Midnights, all about different stories about what she feels at midnight, and for the record, it's been on my Spotify repeat from the day it has been out.

Since you're already here, I will be sharing the top 5 songs from the Midnights album that resonate with my Architecture journey.

1. ANTI-HERO

The first one on the list is Anti-Hero. The legendary lyrics from this track are the line It's me, Hi! I'm the problem it's me. We can all relate especially me ever since I've been in architecture school. Being an architecture student is tough. Honestly, in all the battles that I've encountered the battle within my inner self is the most destructive. It keeps me awake at night and it's either I am having a breakthrough in my thoughts or just me breaking down because I don't know what to do exactly. Especially being in my thesis year. I can say that aside from the topic of my thesis, I am the most of a problem. It's a continuous battle between me versus me. It's exhausting rooting for ourselves. But, knowing the fact that I am the drawback, maybe the only thing that can also solve it is myself. 

2. SNOW ON THE BEACH (FEAT. LANA DEL REY)

The second song that I will be featuring is Snow on the Beach (ft. Lana Del Rey) which is on the 4th track of the album. According to Taylor Swift, the song is all about falling with someone as they fall in love with you at the same time. "sort of in this sort of cataclysmic, fated moment where you realize someone feels exactly the same way that you feel," she said,  "Kind of like it would be if you were to see snow falling on a beach." Isn't lovely? I hope Architecture is the same for me. Kidding aside, it's nice to have someone that you can lean on after a dreadful day caused by academic stress. Someone to talk to outside architecture, someone to talk about the simplest thing or about how their day went, someone will accompany you every midnight when you're doing your plates or just be there with you willing to listen to whatever you just have to say. Just like snow on the beach, it's weird but fucking beautiful. 

3. LAVENDER HAZE

The third song is from the first track of the album. It is one of the best for me. Taylor Swift said that Lavender Haze was used in the 50s when you describe that you're in love. You're in the Lavender Haze. But even though Taylor wrote it with the interpretation of being in love. I relate it to living the dream I've been dreaming about. In the lyrics, it said, "I feel a lavender haze creeping up on me, Surreal, I'm damned if I do give a damn what people say" and it hit me, sometimes dreaming awake keeps us awake at midnight, sometimes we don't realize that the place exactly where we are, are the ones we've been dreaming for the longest time and it masks the thought when we're struggling. I know that architecture has been difficult but imagining that all these things will be worth it made me want to stay in the Lavender Haze and don't think about the people who doubted me.

4. BEJEWELED

Just like Taylor Swift, fantasizing about revenge is one of the reasons why she's awake at midnight, for me the best revenge is the relief of getting away from the heartbreak that I experienced when I am in college. Being the best version of yourself is liberating although I can say that I'm still not into the best version of myself but being polished up really nice could go a long way. Realizing that even the things that made us alive the most then, could shatter us into a million pieces when they left. To tell you honestly, it hurts me but I know there's a reason behind all of it. Focusing on myself is the best way that I cope with that situation. Now, I am happy to say that it taught me some lessons even though I miss the memories, what I really miss the most is being bejeweled by the most important things in my life and that will make the whole place shimmer! 

5. PARIS

Where down to the last song, and that song is Paris! A bonus track from the album. Who's architecture student doesn't want to go and dream about Paris? Maybe not all but I am one of those people that like to travel and someday go to one of the most historic places that contribute to the history of Architecture which is Paris! Even though Taylor wrote it with the means of being in Paris with someone she loves. For me, I like to imagine myself even if I am alone, in Paris. Walking and observing the beauty of it. Traveling is one of the things that fascinates me. I love the thought of going around the world and discovering the most random things. Feeling every moment of being alive chasing dreams, wasting time, and having a good time. Falling in love in Paris. Just falling in love with the universe.

so annoying go through the recent posts on the olivia rodrigo tag and see it flooded with swifties critising her every move. i hate how olivia is seen as the villian in their so called "feud" when taylor (or her team) is the one who demanded 50% writing credits for deja vu despite not being anywhere near the writers room bc it maybe sounded similiar to one of her songs and olivia listened to t swift as a kid. this is a multi-millionaire who saw the success of a young, upcoming filipino artist and thought to herself, "how can i profit off this?" if this was taken to a court of law, i am certain olivia would not have had to pay that much (if she had to pay anything at all) but bc she didn't know the industry, now 50% of her profits on deja vu are directly lining swift's pockets. taylor absolutely took advantage of olivia's inexperience for a quick buck. it's just greed, plain and simple.

okay, so, i honestly don't know enough about the credits for deja vu since everyone says different things about how it went about with jack antonoff saying he didn't know anything about it (but he just comes off as so sleazy to me so i take everything he says with a pinch of salt) but that being said i feel like taylor, st vincent and antonoff should've declined such a large potion of the profits

now on to sw*fties hating on her: i have this conspiracy theory that the only reason they hate her as much as they do is because olivia's the only artist who actually has a shot at matching taylor's level of fame, i mean, she's only twenty with two albums and selling out large stadiums. that's the reason the swifties adore artists like sabrina carpenter (cringy asf lyrics - calling herself a little girl and then asking to put something big in her 'pusita'??? - on songs that only seem to be hits on tiktok) and gracie abrams (zionist nepobaby who's made peod-y remarks about finn wolfhard) who will never be able to match taylor's fame

at the end of the day i think it's become kinda obvious that olivia isn't on good terms with taylor anymore (which is fine idk why people make such a big deal about it) and distance herself from her rabid fanbase but what i do find funny is that the moment taylor is treated the way she treats other people (writing slanderous songs about them and then being coy when asked about it) they can't stand it

Noel: gay (he/she), usually alone at home bc his mom works night shifts at the hospital, wears skinny jeans so tight he can barely move, paints mischas nails when they hang out, great at calming down people having panic attacks, literal trash self esteem, love language is words of affirmation, half Filipino (mother) half german (father), hates kids, touch starved, abandonment issues, has the immune system of a sickly victorian child, hates christmas because he always gets made fun of his name during it, sensory issues, religious trauma for days, chicago the musical fan, digs his nails into his hands when hes stressed, tries on his moms skirts when hes home alone

I'm a Filipino Swiftie and I think I speak for everyone when I say that we're all fucking annoyed that there isn't even 1 Eras Tour dates here when we're one of the top listening countries of Taylor Swift, outbeating SG, the only SEA show and it won't have any fan pre-sale, only a card-exclusive pre-sale. So if you're a poor Filipino fan, you can't even afford go see Taylor. Whatever happened to having $50 tickets to her shows so all her fans can go lol i'm so annoyed don't we matter

I'm really sorry. I know that tour inherently can make people feel like they are being excluded or ignored because their country is not on the listed dates. It undoubtedly sucks and I feel for you and understand wanting to rant and get those feelings off your chest.

If I had to guess, it's because there aren't venues of an adequate size for the nature of Taylor's tour. Which is an insane thing to say - but she is playing multiple sold out dates in a single city to venues that have a capacity of 70K (not to mention the 10K[?]+ amount of fans who are willing to tailgate and stand outside the stadiums she plays at to be within earshot of this tour). The demand is insane and she is thus limited by structures that are able to cater to that level demand. I assume there's a cost/benefit analysis to the balance of playing more shows and the cost of putting those on to pay all personnel for it plus the physical toll on her body vs skipping those cities/countries entirely.

It is unfair and it sucks - undoubtedly. But the only comforting thing I can say is that I don't think it has anything to do with ignorance or not knowing that she has fans everywhere and not wanting to see them and everything to do with the business and logistics and cost of putting on a show of this nature (and that level of production is also baked into those high ticket costs you see).
