GIGLI- 2003 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the greatest movies of all time.
Gigli (rhymes with really) is a gangster/debt collector with a "heart of gold". He works for mob boss Lewis who tells him to abduct Brian, the mentally challenged brother of a federal prosecutor in order to blackmail him into dropping charges...
Things are complicated when Lewis hires another contractor to watch Gigli and Brian.
The contractor is Ricky (Jennifer Lopez), shes as beautiful as she is annoying. She almost exclusively talks in monologues. She never does anything physical in the movie but talks a good game. She says thats she knows a move where she gouges your eyes and takes your memories.
Naturally, Gigli is keen to bang her but surprise surprise.... shes a lesbian. Thankfully thats never stopped Ben Affleck and he proceeds to woo her....
Tumblr media
Also, Gigli might be gay.
As Gigli and Ricky grow closer with Brian, the baywatch loving, mentally challenged guy they abducted, they start to have a crisis of conscience and consider starting a new life....
Gigli is one of the biggest box office bombs ever and is widely considered one of the worst movies ever made. How did the film turn out this bad exactly?
Some of the blame has to fall on Martin Brest who wrote and directed this. Unlike a lot of movies this bad, the director actually has a lot of experience. He directed Beverly Hills Cop, Midnight Run and Scent of a woman. After the release of Gigli he completely disappeared from the film industry and i wasnt able to find any comments from him about this film.
Another problem was that it was written as more serious and Sony wanted to cash in on the stars and made it more like a romcom against Martin Brest's wishes.
The budget for Gigli was 75 million dollars which seems impossible as most of it takes place in Larrys apartment, a whopping 52 mins of the runtime take place in there. Affleck and Lopez' combined salary added up to about 25 million dollars but i cant understand where the rest of the money went.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Christopher Walken and Al Pacino both appear in a scene each. Its hard to say which is stranger. Pacino is dressed as Tony Stark playing a character called Starkman who rambles incoherently about whether a thumb is a finger. Walken wants to get a big bowl of pie, some ice cream, put some on his head, his tongue will slap his brains out trying to get to it.
Mmmmmm good, interested?
With the exception of Ricky, Gigli, Brian and Lewis, every other character in the movie appears for only one scene, does something insane and then we never see them again.
Giglis mother invites him over to inject medicine into her ass. When he gets there she is wearing a pink thong and tries to bang Ricky.
Ricky's ex turns up at the apartment in a rage, tries to initiate a three way, fails, and then slits her wrists. Then they just disappear like nothing ever happened.
Part of what makes this movie so funny is how many awful lines theyre are. Everyone talks so crazy its unreal. Like when Ricky wants Gigli to go down on her:
Tumblr media
Gigli was the first film to sweep the top five categories at the Razzies and was destroyed by critics everywhere. It doesnt seem to have found an audience the same way Troll 2 and The Room have but its one of my favourite movies of that kind. Its so needlessly offensive/very dated and at points it goes so off the rails you cant believe what youre watching. An essential watch.
One of my favourite movies.

Storia Di Musica #306 - The Impressions, Keep On Pushing, 1964
L'anno successivo, quando uscirà Bringing It All Back Home, gli Impressions sfornano un altro disco.

Which actor has improved their craft the most since their first big break in Hollywood?
The Curious Case of Benjamin Affleck
Tumblr media
The Golden Raspberry Awards, known colloquially as the ‘Razzies,’ added a noteworthy category at the 2010 edition of the event – the ‘Worst of the Decade’ awards.
Nominated in the ‘Worst Actor of the Decade’ category, alongside the likes of Rob Schneider and John Travolta, was one Ben Affleck.
Affleck didn’t win. And two years later, he won the Best Picture Oscar for Argo. And that is Ben Affleck’s career distilled into a sentence.
It’s difficult to pin down Affleck the actor; he’s all over the place. But dare I say, his talent in front of the camera is undervalued, and he has grown into a dependable actor, capable of at-least approaching greatness with the right material.
And for a large part of his career, that wasn’t the case.
Affleck and Matt Damon were both launched into the Hollywood stratosphere with Good Will Hunting.
Damon went the route of being a ‘serious’ actor – he followed up his wicked smaht performance with roles in Saving Private Ryan, Rounders and The Talented Mr Ripley.
At this point, one could make a very persuasive argument that Damon is one of the ten best actors of his generation.
Tumblr media
Affleck, however, went a different, more ‘leading man-esque’ route – Armageddon, Forces of Nature, Reindeer Games.
And then came the dreaded early 2000s, undoubtedly Affleck’s nadir as an actor – Pearl Harbour, Gigli, Daredevil, Paycheck and the likes were critically panned. And Affleck wasn’t spared.
Although it might be too grand an assumption to make, it appears that at that point, Affleck wasn’t particularly concerned with his craft. Setting aside the quality of the films, he wasn’t starring in movies where he would be tested as a performer.
If I had to use one word to describe those performances, it would be ‘stiff.’
His career was in limbo. But everything changed with 2007’s Gone Baby Gone, Affleck’s directorial debut. A great film that won him back some goodwill.
Tumblr media
His follow up, The Town, was an even better film. And I felt not only was it the best movie Ben Affleck had starred in since Good Will Hunting, it was also his best performance up to that point.
Since then, it has been an uphill climb for Affleck the actor, who delivered good to great performances in Argo, Gone Girl, Batman Vs Superman, The Accountant.
It’s apparent that taking some time off had done him a world of good. Affleck seemingly developed a more mature approach towards his characters; he could do more, emote more, express more.
Perhaps his greatest weakness as an actor was his inability to pick the right project. And by and large, he's come out of that funk.
Further, with age and experience, his craft has doubtless developed.
And now, he’s a true phenomenon, a bona fide triple threat - the guy co-wrote Good Will Hunting, directed Argo and The Town, and delivered a bravura performance in Gone Girl.
Tumblr media
Oh, and he was goddamn Batman. And all that in a span of five years.
How you like them apples?
Although he's morphed into a more-than-capable actor, his greatest talent lies behind the camera - I think he's a fantastic director, and there's certainly more to come on that front.
If the Razzies include a ‘Best Redemption of the Decade’ award, Ben Affleck is as strong a contender as any.
P.S. He's currently dating Ana de Armas. Man, our boy is wicked smart.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — A Vatican court convicted two environmental activists of aggravated damage Monday and ordered them to pay more than 28,000 euros (US$30,000) in restitution after they glued their hands to the base of an ancient statue in the Vatican Museums in a protest to draw attention to climate change.
The two members of the Last Generation environmental activist group, Guido Viero and Ester Goffi, also received a nine-month suspended sentence and were fined 1,620 euros apiece. A third activist on trial with them, Laura Zorzini, was fined 120 euros.
The trial stemmed from an Aug. 18 protest in the Vatican Museums, during which Viero and Goffi glued their hands to the base of the Laocoon statue, one of the most important ancient works in the collection that is believed to date from the 1st century B.C. They hung up a banner reading “Last Generation: No gas and no carbon,” as Zorzini filmed them.
Their action was part of a wave of Last Generation and related activist protests around Europe that have targeted museums and other cultural institutions, tied up traffic for days and otherwise caused disruptions in a bid to draw attention to what the activists say is the failure of governments to take action to fight climate change.
In closing arguments, the lawyer for the Vatican City State accused the defendants of exploiting Pope Francis’ known concern for the environmental cause by causing “inestimable” damage to a piece of the world’s artistic and cultural patrimony.
Attorney Floriana Gigli said Viero and Goffi knew their protest would damage the artwork, citing their decision to glue their hands to the base, not the statue itself, and yet never expressed regret at the damage caused.
None of the defendants was in the Vatican criminal tribunal for the verdicts.
During the previous hearing May 24, Viero and Goffi told the court they never intended to damage the statue, but also strongly defended their cause. Viero told the court he felt an obligation as a father and grandfather to draw attention to Italy’s failure to halt global warming. Goffi, for her part, recalled she had brought a glue solvent in her purse, but Vatican restorers used a different acetone-based substance to unglue their hands.
Vatican Prosecutor Catia Summaria had asked for convictions: she sought a sentence of two years and a fine of 3,000 euros apiece for Viero and Goffi and a sentence of one month for Zorzini. But she said if the court decided on suspended sentences, the defendants should be ordered to repay the full cost of the damage to the statue.
Gigli said the actual cost was impossible to estimate given the statue is a priceless artwork and is permanently damaged. She asked the court for an appraisal to come up with a figure, saying the restoration work alone had cost 3,148 euros.
In the end, the court quantified the restitution owed to the Vatican City State at 28,148 euros. There was no immediate word on an appeal.
During the last hearing, the head of the Vatican Museums’ marble restoration laboratory, Guy Devreux, said the damage to the base was ultimately less than he had anticipated but was nevertheless permanent. He stressed that the marble base of the statute was “absolutely” to be considered an “integral part of the work.”
Last Generation has said it targeted the Laocoon statue, which is believed to have been carved in Rhodes in 40-30 B.C., because of the symbolic story behind it. According to legend and the Vatican Museums’ own website, Laocoon warned his fellow Trojans against accepting the wooden horse left by the Greeks during the Trojan War. The group said the climate crisis is the modern-day warning that is being unheeded by political leaders.

Ben’s Babes; Actor entertains three girls at fiancee J-Lo's mansion.
By:  Anthony Harwood
September 16, 2003
ACTOR Ben Affleck took three girls out to dinner -from his lover Jennifer Lopez's Beverly Hills mansion.
Affleck was even holding one of the girls' hands as he arrived at a fast-food restaurant on what should have been his wedding night.
But the 30-year-old laughed off reports that the postponement of the marriage meant he had split from singer-actress J-Lo, who was on the other side of America at her Miami mansion.
He refused to confirm or deny the break-up rumours but appeared relaxed and happy for the first time in several days.
As he spotted reporters and photographers waiting for him, he laughed and joked: ``What are you doing here? What's going on? Who's here?''
The Good Will Hunting and Pearl Harbour star drove his three companions in his Rolls-Royce to a Mexican restaurant about 10 minutes from J-Lo's Mulholland Drive home.
One of the girls was the mystery woman he was seen with at a Las Vegas casino at the weekend.
Once inside the Baja Fresh restaurant, Affleck picked up some nachos, salsa and a drink before sitting down at a table with the girls.
Throughout the meal, the actor chatted and laughed and took time out to speak to fans who wandered over to say hello.
After about 30 minutes, the group got up to leave and Affleck gave autographs to another group of fans.
Then the girls got back in the Rolls and Affleck drove them all back to J-Lo's mansion.
Last Wednesday, Affleck and J-Lo, who star together in the film Gigli, looked glum at dinner after announcing they had postponed their wedding.
A friend of the couple admitted yesterday that their conduct at the exclusive Ivy restaurant had been odd.
He said: ``They hardly even looked each other in the eye the whole time.
``It seemed really odd that they would want to go out in public if they were behaving like that towards each other. Now Ben is like a different person and seems a lot happier. They just needed a few days away from each other as everything was getting on top of them.
``Ben said he needed to take time out so J-Lo went to Miami. The break certainly seems to have done Ben the world of good and he is now like his old self.''
The couple had been due to marry before 400 guests in Montecito, California, this week.
But it was called off, amid rumours that Ben's mother Chris had advised him not to go through with it.
After the announcement, 33-yearold J-Lo flew to Miami Beach, where she has an 11-bedroom house, with his sister Lynda and other friends and relatives.
Whatever happens in the Affleck Lopez real-life saga, fans will see them getting wed soon. They marry in the film Jersey Girl, out next year.
CAPTION(S):
DINNER FOR FOUR; OUT ON THE TOWN; PALS: Affleck holds hands with one of the girls. He took the three out for a bite to eat, top, while his fiancee J-Lo was spotted at a Miami nightclub in the early hours, above; A HELPING HAND

I discovered tonight for the first time what the film Gigli is about, and now I'm lowkey obsessed and horrified that there's seemingly a cinematic universe of Ben Affleck relentlessly hooking up with lesbians. Like once, ok I guess. But twice? In only a few years of one another??

Well mod, after that clusterfuck of reviews your theory that Harry will transition full time into acting is well and truly dead in the water. His team can't buy film critics so he's over.
Why would you say that? Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck made Gigli and still have careers. All he has to do is go away for a while. Take lessons and find an indie project to make a comeback.
They did him a disservice by giving him all these huge projects back-to-back and hyping him up so much. Then, the Rolling Stone article just set him up to get knocked off the pedestal. If they had let him just do the Marvel cameo, it wouldn't have been as bad.

I remember liking the movie Meet Joe Black, which I am rewatching now. The same director made Scent of a Woman, which I like.
Martin Brest also directed Beverly Hills Cop and Midnight Run, and then completely ended his career after filming Gigli. Weird.
Seems like he was fired from some projects. You always wonder about all the people who didn’t quite make it. You’d think that would be the most probable career of anyone in Hollywood. Partial-failure. You get a few tries, doesn’t work out.
