So, like many of you, I’ve been inside for a while and have watched a bunch of films. Like a shitload. So I’m going to mini review them in chunks of five. Let’s dive in.
Tumblr media
VFW (2019)
This one is about a bunch of veterans trying to defend their local VFW post against drug addled mutants and the drug kingpin that supplies said drugs. If you’re a fan of old 80’s action and horror, Cannon movies, or just gory films in general, you’ll love this. This movie is hilarious, gory with spectacular practical effects, and great performances from genre veterans you’ve always wanted to see get roles like this. I really can’t praise this film enough, go check this one out.
Tumblr media
Destroyer (2018)
Nicole Kidman plays a detective that reconnects with people from more than 15 years ago to right the wrongs of her past. I’ll be honest, I’ve never been crazy about Kidman as an actress. She’s just never really impressed me in anything I’ve seen her in and she always looks radically different from movie to movie, and not in a Gary Oldman way. But here, she is giving the performance of her career. I really believed her as this beaten down by life and regret detective. Her performance is the reason you’re watching this. It’s a well made crime drama that has some intense bursts of violence, but it’s not going to blow your mind. Check it out for one of the most underrated performances of 2018.
Tumblr media
Valley of the Dolls (1967)
This is the classic movie about the rise and fall of three young women in show business. I really wanted to like this one, but it has just aged so poorly. It is the most generic rise and fall in show business story you’ve seen a million times before. I’m sure a lot of those stories you’ve seen before got it from here, but there isn’t anything else in this film to make things interesting. You can always tell where the story is going and the performances are on the hammy side of the spectrum. You can skip this and you won’t be missing much.
Tumblr media
The Night is Short Girl, Walk On (2017)
Here we have an anime film following a girl known as Otome on an evening filled with partying, drinking, and other hijinks. All the while, there’s a guy trying to “run into her” and you see how his plan doesn’t always work out. The animation here is top notch and your eyes will have loads of candy to chew on throughout. This movie is funny, heartfelt, and has a lot to say about relationships between men and women. Worth checking out.
Tumblr media
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
During the Cold War, a veteran spy (Gary Oldman) is forced out of retirement to find a Soviet agent in the MI6. This is a very cerebral film that constantly has you wondering who can be trusted. It’s told in a nonlinear fashion, which does make the film a tad confusing at times and hard to follow. But if you can navigate this maze, you’ll be rewarded with a great film packed with subtle performances from some big hitters. Check it out.

4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #15: Spark one up for the stoner classic Up In Smoke (1978). This is Cheech and Chong’s first movie and one of their most popular. It’s basically about how they meet and are accidentally deported to Mexico where they agree to drive a van back to the states to make it in time for their gig. Little do they know the van is made entirely of weed and the cops are after them.
This is only the second time I’ve seen this movie, but it holds up pretty well. The humor is obviously a bit dated, but most of the jokes land and the soundtrack is pretty great if you dig 70’s music. I don’t need to tell you that loads of weed is smoked in this, it’s a Cheech and Chong movie. Roll a fat one and enjoy.

4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #12: Mix yourself a White Russian and settle in for The Big Lebowski (1998). Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski is mistaken for a millionaire with the same last name and has his rug ruined. Looking for reimbursement, he grabs his bowling team to help him out.
When it comes to stoner movies, this is one of the best there is. Hell, when it comes to comedy movies in general this is one of the best ever made. The Dude is an all time great film character and THE prototypical stoner. Laid back to a fault and never taking anything seriously until it’s too late. I don’t need to tell you this is a classic, you already know that. I’m just here to remind you that it’s still as good as the last time you saw it.

4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #11: We get blasted in the past with Dazed and Confused (1993). This film follows a bunch of teenagers on their last day of school in 1976. This is the movie that launched many careers including Milla Jovovich, Ben Affleck, and Matthew McConaughey. But does it hold up after all this time?
Here’s is another movie that’s a first time watch for me that’s been on my list for ages. Out of all the movies set in high school I’ve seen, this is one of the better ones. It’s filled with interesting and fun characters, loads of pot, and a pretty good classic rock soundtrack. Give this one a watch if you haven’t seen it.

4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #13: We go on the run with Pineapple Express (2008). Process server Dale and his pot dealer Saul must go on the run from the cops after Dale witnesses Saul’s boss kill a rival while waiting to serve him papers. Being on the run leads them on a hilarious adventure to clear their names.
This is a movie I’ve seen more times than I can count. It’s got loads of bloody action, lots of joints smoked, and a pretty good soundtrack. It does try a bit too hard to be funny at times, but most of the jokes land. Well worth watching if you’ve never seen it and worth a revisit if it’s been a while.

4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #2: Today’s movie is Grandma’s Boy (2006). This one is about 35 year old video game tester Alex who’s evicted from his apartment because his roommate has been using their rent money on prostitutes. After a mishap staying at a friend’s place, he’s forced to move in with his grandma and her two roommates.
This movie is a Happy Madison production and I’ll say it’s probably the best thing they’ve ever released. I know that isn’t saying much, but it’s something. There’s loads of reefer consumed throughout this movie by many of the characters in it. So at least it feels like it was written by stoners. There are some really funny moments in this and the soundtrack is surprisingly great. A blonde Linda Cardellini plays Alex’s love interest and she’s really charming here. This is a movie that is a bit dated, but it has enough weird moments and laughs to keep you interested. Check it out.

4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #7: Up next is the 80’s classic Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). This movie doesn’t really have a plot, it kind of just follows a bunch of teens doing the usual sex, drugs, and partying thing. It’s more a snapshot of what it must have been like to be young back when this came out.
This was my first time seeing this often referenced stoner movie. Overall I’d say it’s a pretty fun movie that’s in no rush to tell what story it has to tell. It’s also a good movie to watch if you ever wanted to see actors when they were young. Seriously, everyone is in this movie from a blink and you’ll miss it appearance of Nicolas Cage to Forest Whitaker being a football player. I will say it’s hilarious seeing Sean Penn as pothead Spicoli here considering how seriously he takes himself these days. I’d say check this one out if you’re feeling something more mellow.

4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #1: Our first film of the month is American Ultra (2015). It’s about a small town stoner (Eisenberg) that feels stuck in life and his girlfriend (Stewart). What this stoner doesn’t know is that he’s a government agent marked as a liability and targeted to be destroyed.
This movie really sells itself on being a stoner action comedy, but it kind of drops the whole weed thing 45 minutes in. There’s also CGI smoke in the beginning of the film when they’re smoking in their apartment. That struck me as really odd, to have CGI smoke in a stoner movie. What little plot there is here is stupid on purpose but isn’t really funny enough to pull it off. The soundtrack is also really distracting and full of terrible music. There are some decently trippy scenes here and there, the trippiest of them being a travel through the main couple’s relationship. The third act set piece is fun with lots of gory action and some pretty funny kills. Overall this movie is entertaining but ultimately forgettable. I’d say check it out if you want a semi obscure stoner movie.

Since all of April is 4/20 and we’re based in a state where weed is legal, I figured it would be fun if I watched a stoner movie a day until the big day. I’ll drop mini reviews as I go through them and will still be writing up reviews of what I’ve watched over the last month. I’ve got nothing but time now as I’m sure most of you do. If you have any stoner movies you think are underrated, shoot them my way. Stay safe and stay creepy.

4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #14: Pour yourself some whiskey and roll one for The Gentlemen (2020). According to IMDb the plot is as follows: An American expat tries to sell off his highly profitable marijuana empire in London, triggering plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him. Guy Ritchie directs this British crime comedy.
I’ve always enjoyed Guy Ritchie’s particular flavor of crime movies. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), Snatch (2001), and Revolver (2005) are all films worth checking out. This film sees him return to form with an engrossing tale of weed, revenge, blackmail, and bribery. This film is also hilarious, incredibly well acted, and has a pretty impressive soundtrack. If you’re looking for something with snappy dialogue and style for days, look no further.

25 Deadly Days of Christmas Film #4: Elves (1989) is our next Yuletide film. Here we have a young woman that finds out she’s the focus of an evil Nazi experiment that requires a virgin to breed with their elves so they can create a race of supermen. She’s trapped in a department store with the elves, two of her friends, and the beardy Dan Haggerty as a rogue Santa Claus for protection. If that description doesn’t sell you on this one, I don’t know what will.
Sadly, the premise is far more interesting than the final product. The Nazis are over the top villainous, but the elves themselves look really rough. They honestly look like rubber toys. Dan Haggerty looks like he’s going through the motions here, but it is funny that he’s smoking in practically every frame he’s in. There are some fun and offensive moments here, but overall this is kind of a boring movie. Watch at your own risk.

4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #6: Rolling up next is Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004). The plot of this film is simple, two friends named Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) get really stoned and have a hankering for some fast food they haven’t had in ages. Once a White Castle commercial conveniently plays on TV as they’re deciding what to eat, the decision is made. From there, an adventure full of laughs and weed begins.
This is probably one of the only multicultural stoner movies. I say this mainly to illustrate how ahead of its time this movie was and kind of still is. Of course some of the humor is dated and the special effects are quite awful (even for the time). Despite those drawbacks, there’s a lot to enjoy here. There’s loads of weed being smoked, weird daydreams, pterodactyl sounds, stoned cheetah riding, and Neil Patrick Harris in the role that made him relevant again. Cho and Penn play really well off of each other and are both very funny. Give it a watch.

4/20 Movie Marijuanathon Film #8: We smoke ourselves stupid with Dude, Where’s My Car? (2000). This one is a tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme. It’s all about stoners Jesse and Chester that wake up one morning to realize that they can’t remember where Jesse’s car is. This leads them on a whirlwind adventure.
As far as these kinds of films go, this is a weird one. The two main characters are referred to as stoners multiple times, but they never once smoke weed. They have the stereotypical stupidity and affinity for the word “dude” like you’d expect. Oddly enough, a dog that smokes out of a pipe that looks like him is the only character that smokes in this entire film. Not that that’s a bad thing, the movie is great to watch while baked which is the most important thing. This is a fun movie that has quite a few classic gags and is endlessly quotable. Check it out.
