Sephiroth: I went through an entire character arc during quarantine.

I like to think the Shinra Infantry ised to be extremely competent but then when Sephiroth and the SOLDIERs came along they fell to the wayside. Like, Heidegger used to be a competent and somewhat respectable guy before he came to power but with his own power drunkenness and an extreme inferiority complex caused by the existence of the SOLDIER program he sorts... morphed into the guy he is now

Oh, I agree. Heidegger very much comes across as having an inferiority complex and being power drunk. And honestly? It *does* say a lot that Heidegger was put in charge of SOLDIER rather a true replacement for Lazard (admittedly this is arguably a result of how CC was written later and did cause a number of retcons from OG, such as Lazard’s entire existence). I also didn’t really get much impression that Lazard was giving orders to SOLDIER when they were fighting so there’s a good chance Heidegger still had final say over true military action. Heidegger still has a very major say in what Shinra’s military actually was doing, and we aren’t actually given much indication that he was a figurehead who’s victories were all the results of the generals presumably underneath him (like we also don’t get much indication that wasn’t a thing, but still).

I know it’s a popular fanon that Sephiroth was a general/the one really leading Shinra to victories, but there’s actually no hints that he really was a general in canon. That and Angeal/Genesis being referred to as Commanders are completely fan created.  Like, there’s also only so much ‘aim the human weapon at the enemy and see what happens’ that you could viably do, and Sephiroth and SOLDIER couldn’t be everywhere on the battle field, plus they simply couldn’t have all of SOLDIER in Wutai fighting. They couldn’t even have logically *left* the majority of SOLDIER in Wutai to keep down potential rebellion.

And Infantry *definitely* had to be more competent in the past, since otherwise it’s hard to explain how the hell Shinra managed to take over so much of the world pre-Shinra. Like even in the present the Infantry was probably more effective than we really see because Shinra *is* still basically in control of Wutai. AVALANCHE also hasn’t exactly made great strides in taking down Shinra.

I think a thing that really needs to be remembered about the executives is that in a sense from a *writing* standpoint they had to be written as fairly incompetent/stupid evil. Even then we do see Heidegger, Scarlet and Palmer can be fairly effective at their own jobs, especially since two of them run two of the most valuable departments in Shinra (Science is the third, and honestly god only knows how the fuck Science is functional and there I’d honestly argue it’s more in spite of Hojo rather than because of Hojo. And as I mentioned in my Scarlet post, did Science ever actually have a major success post SOLDIER or is it like, we made SOLDIER and that’s about it? Like we never see a true, Sephiroth-level success out of them again (that they’re aware of since Cloud) and you really do have to wonder about that). Like we need in a sense a justification that AVALANCHE can primarily focus on Sephiroth and not truly split their attention between Sephiroth and Shinra.

As I said yesterday, you really have to wonder about what could have happened if SE actually wrote the executives as having depth rather than writing them as flat characters. But then again, that’s what fanfic is for.

You know how the Space Program got cut and that's why Cid is so bitter against Shinra in his backstory? Well what if Palmer, the Director of the Space Exploration Program, was embezzling funds through it but like, instead of just getting rid of him, Shinra Sr decided to just use the failure if the first launch as n excuse to cut the program completely

Oh no, that’s exactly what I think happened. The problem of Palmer is he’s been around so long Shinra Sr. may have viewed it as more of a liability to punt him. He also *is* per what we see in OG a fairly good engineer. He did after all manage to get Cid’s rocket back in fairly good shape on his own quickly, and knew it well enough to use it. It’s very, very possible he may have actually still been used to advise on airship projects even after the Space Program gets shut down.

But without a doubt the man caused fuckery with money, because let’s be real here. Shinra Sr. is *definitely* petty enough to keep him on the board of directors but not allow him to do anything/make him the single most impotent board member. Like even Reeve had more authority/power than him in the company.

Old three-sentence ficlet I wrote for these three back on DW, that I never posted here, or at least I don’t think so. Cloud/Tifa/Barret.

The three of them finally run into the house, Cloud and Tifa both huddled close to Barret, who has spread his raincoat out over his arms like some kind of dark blue bat and is doing his best to shield them from the worst of the driving rain. Even with Barret's best efforts, though, the three of them are completely soaked and chilled, although the warmth in the house is doing its best to cut through the worst of the cold. The three of them huddle together for a while, laughing for a while at the ridiculousness of the whole situation, until Tifa coughs and says what they were all thinking: "I think we could all use a nice, hot bath right now, don't you?"

Wish we could turn back time to the good old days, when our momma sang us to sleep, but now we're stressed out. ♪♫

That Scene With Aerith and Sephiroth

And now, I've gotten to... that part.

Like, I knew this scene would happen. It's not even a spoiler anymore. I think everyone who enjoys video games knows about this scene, even if you haven't played FF7 before. It's become a cornerstone of gaming pop culture. It's basically the "Rosebud" of video games.

But god damn, Aerith's death still got me. I did not expect this scene to happen so early on. I don't know if it's because it caught me off guard by happening sooner than I thought it would, or because I got to know the character better, but damn. This scene still made me feel sad, not gonna lie.

Even after all these years, and despite this scene being well known, it's still a very powerful scene. It's just set up so well.

I'm starting to see why this game is so legendary. I'm legitimately starting to love this game.
