Oh! You're willing to take whump writing requests? 👀

If so... could you write a Whumpee and Caretaker getting into a bad argument, and Whumpee storms out, only to be kidnapped and not heard from ever since? And Caretaker feels SO GUILTY to the point they blamed themself for arguing with Whumpee over something so trivial? It's okay if not, but ever since reading your bandit story, I would love to see more stuff from you, especially if you're up to writinf my favorite tropes! :O

Onthyes hands Shayah Ventis's journal when she opens the door. "Can you give this to Ventis, please?" he asks. "He left it at my place."

Shayah takes the journal slowly, her brow furrowing. "He's not here, blondie. I thought he was with you."

"What?"

Ventis doesn't have a place of his own so he's constantly bouncing between Onthyes's and Shayah's respective homes on a whim. If he isn't with Onthyes he can always expect to find him at Shayah's.

So where is he?

"He left mine late last night. I thought he was coming here."

"You didn't go with him? You escort him everywhere."

Onthyes feels his palms start to sweat, his heart racing. He never lets Ventis go out alone, especially late at night. The genasi bitches at him about it all the time but Onthyes always insists, knowing that Ventis is a bright sparkly beautiful target for lowlifes of all kinds. Even now that he's finally gaining control over his magic Onthyes has never left him out on his own.

But last night, when Ventis had stormed out with a literal cloud thundering over his head, Onthyes hadn't followed. He'd said he wanted space, and for the first time Onthyes had given it to him.

Shit.

"We had an argument," Onthyes admits. "He didn't want me to go with him."

"That's never stopped you before."

"I know!"

Shayah's eyebrows climb higher on her face at Onthyes's raised voice. She steps inside, grabbing her cloak and her bag, and then joins Onthyes outside and locks the door behind herself.

"Come on," she says. "We're gonna find him. If we're lucky he's just shacked up with some handsome stranger and he'll be on one of our doorsteps soon."

That would not be lucky at all for Onthyes. The idea makes him feel sick. Even if Ventis doesn't offically belong to him the thought of him going out and finding someone else to sleep with feels so so wrong.

They comb through all of Ventis’s favorite places: the library, the tavern, the market by the harbor, all to no avail. They even wander by a dingy little nightspill den just in case the fight had been bad enough for him to relapse but luckily they don’t see him there either.

By the time night comes Onthyes is in a state of panic. He can’t decide which possibility is worse: that Ventis decided he never wants to see him again or that something happened to him.

Oh gods, what if something happened to him?

What if someone grabbed him off the street? What if his withdrawl-induced hallucinations returned and he wandered off, chasing shadows into the middle of nowhere?

A week goes by. Onthyes doesn’t rest. He becomes obsessed with searching for any sign of Ventis, but every passing day of finding nothing brings him closer to the verge of insanity. Shayah has to force him to eat and rest on multiple occasions.

One one such night, Onthyes dissolves into exhausted, guilty tears on Shayah's couch.

"It was such a small thing," he chokes out, hugging a throw pillow to his chest. "He'd met some new friends and he liked them but I thought they seemed like trouble and I was scared that he'd relapse if he wasn't careful with who he saw. You know how hard it was to get him sober the first time so I really didn't want any of us to have to go through that again but he took it as me not trusting his judgement-"

"To be fair, we shouldn't trust his judgement."

"But you know that's a cruel thing to say. Especially to him. Especially when he's just started being able to trust his own mind again."

Shayah sighs, tipping her head back and blowing out smoke from her pipe. "I know, blondie. I know."

Onthyes scrubs the tears from his eyes. Moping around isn't going to help him find Ventis, but Shayah has forbidden him from going out searching again tonight.

"It's all my fault," he whisperes. "I felt hurt cause he didn't appreciate that I really just want to keep him safe. But I should've followed him anyway."

"He'll turn up."

And he does turn up that same night in the form of an exhausted and bloodied body collapsing against Shayah's door in the dead of night, the sound rousing Onthyes from his fitful sleep on the couch.

Winds rolled heavy against the bark of the jacaranda tree. Rain poured, turning the ground cold and heavy, turning the air sharp with a hundred little shards that dragged down fur and cloth alike. And high in the sky, among tordid dark clouds that dragged themselves over the horizon, lightning snapped in webs for the briefest of seconds before fading from sight, with thunder as its ever present companion shortly taking that space.

Within Aniketos’ tree, there was no substance of the thunderstorm that shook it. Maybe the waterfall was a bit wobbly, or the squirrels more likely to bundle up into a large furry pile, but the home was sound and safe. Through the windows one could hear the rain pitter-patter, or the distant thunder rumble. As Avon snuffed the lanterns out, like Ani had taught them, each rumble seemed to prickle at their back. An uncomfortable awareness murmured that the thunderstorm was growing closer. Soon the tumulations would become louder, turning into harsh claps of sound. That thought brought sweat to Avon’s palms as the final lamp went dark under their hands.

“Thank you for your help,” Aniketos said from the stairway, heading down towards them. He was already dressed for sleep, a loose tunic under a long robe that artfully laid open onto his chest until it reached the ties at his waist. His gaze briefly strayed to the largest window of the tree, faintly seeing the rivulets of water shimmering on the glass. Storms could be a curse or blessing, and he dearly hoped for the latter. He could defend his woods and tree from bandits, but only his tree could be safe from things like thunder and lightning. And even then, how much could he actually bend nature to keep a cove of safety.

“Hmm, hopefully the wind won’t pick up much more than now. Otherwise we might be seeing a risk of trees falling overnight,” Aniketos commented aloud to Avon. “My tree isn’t tall enough to be at risk of lightning strike and, even if it were to come about as such, I have protected it with enough magic to see off such damage. I can’t do it for long, but a night should be enough.”

“What happens if the storm goes on for longer?” Avon asked, both curious and concerned as they rested a hand on the wall near to them. The bark was rough and messy, like any other tree trunk, if not for the fact it was just soft enough not to scrape against skin and that even Avon didn’t need much magic to feel the warm pulse of life in this room around them. The thought of the place getting damaged brought that faint underlying dread closer to their surface.

“Then I pray to Oa,” Aniketos simply responded, before his attention turned to other things, like the bag on his table. “...You have your things packed?”

“Well, yeah.” Avon had stayed the night a few times, usually returning back into town to crash at the local inn, but they were never one to assume that an invitation could be on offer. Apparently even when the sky was rumbling fit to burst. If anything there was more agitation humming around them than usual.

“I had…thought you might wish to stay and wait out the storm,” Aniketos said, an unspoken question in his words and the extended hand he raised to Avon.

“I…I didn’t want to intrude. And I’d already stayed the past couple of nights, I thought a third might be pushing it,” Avon responded, their voice trailing off into a nervous babble when another rumble of thunder rocked the windows and they let out a vibrating hum like nails on rocks, eyes wide in the darkness.

“...Are you afraid of the storm?” Aniketos asked, his head tilting just a bit to the side.

“No, no, no. Normally I’m quite fond of them. Listening to the rain and thunder, it’s usually soothing. Walking through them, especially with the storm itself right overhead, not so much,” Avon admitted.

“Then it is settled. I cannot have you walking through such abysmal weather back to the town, certainly not in good faith as a host.” For a few beats Aniketos hesitated, glancing over to Avon who was appearing even more wide-eyed. But then they visibly softened, relaxing and setting their bag down.

“Thank you,” they said.

“No need to thank me. I’m also doing this as a friend should do.” Reaching over, Aniketos picked up Avon’s bag, drawing in close to their face. Avon wondered if he could hear how their heart did a rattle of rapid beating in their chest, or feel the warm blush on their cheeks. To call himself their friend…truly Avon did see Ani as their friend too, but they’d been afraid of being too quick on whether to refer to him as such aloud. Here was the proof though. And yet with their soft racing heart, perhaps friend was still not close enough?

“You’re a good friend,” Avon commented, drifting in Ani’s footsteps as he returned their bag to the guest room. “I…you know that offer you gave a while back? If I was nervous or afraid or I had another night terror?”

“That I could provide you with company?” Aniketos straightened up from making the bed. “Most certainly, I can follow through on that offer tonight.”

It wasn’t the storm, Avon thought to themself as they disrobed for sleep, having to shoo Aniketos out of the room to do so in private. The storm was a source of white noise and comfort. But when the thunder claps rang out and the ground trembled, they knew that their dreams would bring them other thoughts and sources of those sounds. Nothing pleasant or kind or soothing. Would Aniketos’ presence help though? That was a small persisting fear in Avon’s thoughts. What if they woke up to see him there with them and weren’t properly awake enough to respond in recognition? Staring at themself in the dark unlit mirror, they exhaled slowly and rubbed their face until they could feel the blush fading.

“Thanks for waiting Ani - where’s your robe?”

“Oh? Most mortals and other sleeping partners I’ve rested with haven’t usually had a concern for a lack of robe.”

“That - yeah, understandable.” Aniketos was extremely pretty. Unbearably, at times. Avon wondered how he’d managed to go through his many years as a dryad without having taken one of his many, many suitors no doubt. At the same time, they felt a rankling for however many people must have put the thought in Ani’s mind that it was more comforting to sleep together in the nude. They kept their gaze firm to the ceiling until Aniketos gently placed a hand on their arm, not in the robe but at least in a pair of baggy sleeping trousers.

“I would much prefer your overall comfort while you rest. Will this be suitable?” he asked.

“That’s fine,” Avon breathed out. On the one hand, the seemingly transactional nature of this was grating at them. On the other hand, it pushed more of their emotions out of the moment. They didn’t need to look deep into this - he was helping them sleep better, that was all. Sliding into the bed, they waited for Aniketos to lay down and get comfortable first before they scooted in closer. One of his arms went under their head, and on instinct they laid an arm across his chest. Aniketos felt the hesitation and tensing of the arm as if to stay pulling away, and he settled his other hand over Avon’s outstretched one.

“Whatever makes you comfortable,” he insisted. “If this position is what you settle into naturally, then you don’t need to worry any further.” As he stroked his fingertips over Avon’s hand, he watched as they slowly blinked and hummed an affirmation. “Good. Then rest now. I will hold you close.”

Slowly turning over, he wrapped both of his arms around Avon, letting them settle with their head close to his chest. This left one arm trapped but not painfully, but the other rested where it had stretched out, now draped over Aniketos’ waist. Avon inhaled deeply, their eyes closing as they let themself nestle in. All anxieties and fears trickled away, to the sound of rain falling on windows and thunder rolling through the skies. The sound of Aniketos drifting off above them. The gentle pressure of his arms, blanketing Avon from the rest of the world. And the faint rabbit-paced heart beat that they listened to from inside Ani’s chest, until he finally fell asleep too.

Love

Base, November 16, 2054

Kapkan didn’t get why everything had to be documented to the point of risking the lives of his teammates; Six was eluding, only telling him it was not of his business which only infuriated the hunter. Spatsnaz were stationed in Poland when the attack in Hungry happened, usually Kapkan never noticed these things but after being slightly inebriated he asked his older teammate, “Don’t you think it's weird we were told they KNEW an attack would happen here?” “Terrorists never have a plan its always random, i swear only you would notice somgthing like this” Tachanka chuckled and took a shot, Kapkan knew Tachanka was right, informal orginizations are more flexible than them, but Kapkan’s instincts almost never proved wrong; it just doesn’t add up.'' Kapkan stated before taking a shot with his partner. “You just need to get laid, princess,” Tachanka stated with a thunderous laugh. Kapkan never liked the nickname but before he could retort Tachanka responded with, “Now unlike you I'm going to go get laid, join me if you want” before clapping his younger partners back. Kapkan’s face was flushed red with jealousy and hoped Tachanka didn’t notice. He took a shot and decided to go back to his room to hopefully sleep his feelings away, as he did most nights.

He awoke with a pounding on the door and while half asleep he yelled “whaaaaaattt” and that's when Bandit walked in immediately asking where Jäger was Kapkan replied with a groggy “I have no idea where your boyfriend is, check the mess hall or whatever” Kapkan said while rolling on his side to face away from the door Bandit simply responded with a simple “he’s not my boyfriend” before leaving and closing the door. Kapkan figured he should wake up considering Thermite wanted to make rabbit stew that night and besides Kapkan needed some time alone, without all the cameras and microphones; just a man and his safe space. Unfortunately for Kapkan he needed to wake Tachanka and actually eat breakfast, the former being the more daunting task. Tachanka should really be called Tankanka because waking him is a battle in itself, and Kapkan still tinged with hurt after last night and decided he would be less patient today. He entered Tachanka’s room surprised to find him alone and decided the best move would be to clap and dully yell , “wake up you old fool” before attempting to shove him awake and to Kapkan’s immense surprise Tachanka quickly tuned and captured him in a bear hug, Kapkan could feel the heat rising from his entire body to his face, making it a burning red, “what the hell?!” and Tachanka replied with a boisterous “happy birthday” making Kapkan freeze. He had completely forgotten today was the day of his birth; it wasn’t uncommon for him to forget after 36 of them and not to mention his family never making a big deal about birthdays. But Tachanka never forgot, “Alex what the hell you couldn’t have said that in any other way?” Kapkan said now squirming to get free but Tachanka only tightened his grip “нет” Tachanka said in their mother language, looking directly in Kapkan’s eyes at an uncomfortably close distance. In a desperate attempt to change the topic he asked “I’m guessing you didn’t get laid last night” Tachanka’s deep laugh reverberated through Kapkan’s body making his heart flutter, but he didn’t let his eyes show this. “Finka’s a harder fish to catch” Tachanka reasons, “or you’re just too much of an old man” Kapkan retorted which was met with “I can assure you I’m still young enough to fish, Maxim” The use of his name left his guard down for a second but he quickly regained his mental balance and told him they were going to be late for breakfast to which Tachanka sighed “you’re no fun” before finally releasing Kapkan. He would be lying if he said he didn’t miss the the warmth Alex provided before making his way down to the mess hall with his companion.

Unfortunately for Kapkan and his plans they had an unplanned mission; something that rarely happened, and he would be lying if he said it wasn’t slightly worrying.

“Intel suggests a large amount of White activity in Warsaw, Poland and it is believed they either have a thermonuclear device or a biological one” Six explained gravely as everyone looked at each other at the mention of another New Mexico or god forbid another Paris. Despite this Kapkan couldn’t help himself from asking “Is this intel the same as the intel that told us we should be prepared for an attack in Katowice?” All eyes were on him and he knew it; he never mentions things like this during briefings, “I mean if another European city might be leveled shouldn’t be extra careful?” Six was burning a look into him and she quickly responded, “Rainbow receives their orders of only the most viable threats, we are the best of the best, and I don’t think you have the authority to be questioning this intel.” Kapkan laid the issue to rest and tried his best not to blush out of embarrassment, “Nice job Princess” Tachanka whispered in his ear, but Kapkan wasn’t in the mood to argue with that nickname so he just grunted a whatever at him.
