McCarty was born on March 7, 1908, in Shubuta, Mississippi. She was raised in nearby Hattiesburg by her aunt and grandmother. McCarty, who never married and had no children, lived frugally in a house without air conditioning. She never had a car or learned to drive, so she walked everywhere, including the grocery store that was one mile from her home. When she was 8 years old, McCarty opened a savings account at a bank in Hattiesburg and began depositing the coins she earned from her laundry work. She would eventually open accounts in several local banks. By the time McCarty retired at age 86, her hands crippled by arthritis, she had saved $280,000. She set aside a pension for herself to live on, a donation to her church, and small inheritances for three of her relatives. The remainder—$150,000—she donated to the University of Southern Mississippi, a school that had remained all-white until the 1960s. McCarty stipulated that her gift be used for scholarships for Black students from southern Mississippi who otherwise would not be able to enroll in college due to financial hardship. Business leaders in Hattiesburg matched her bequest and hundreds of additional donations poured in from around the country, bringing the total endowment to nearly half a million dollars. The first beneficiary of McCarty’s largesse was Stephanie Bullock, an 18-year-old honors student from Hattiesburg, who received a $1,000 scholarship. Bullock subsequently visited McCarty regularly and drove her around town on errands. In 1998 the University awarded McCarty an honorary degree. She received an honorary doctorate from Harvard University, and President Bill Clinton awarded her the Presidential Citizens Medal. McCarty died of liver cancer on September 26, 1999, at the age of 91. In 2019 McCarty’s home was moved to Hattiesburg’s Sixth Street Museum District and turned into a museum.

Sorry for another d/nation post but I'm afraid we're in another desperate spot. For those who don't know, my family and I (father and younger sibling) have been homeless and living in a motel as of November 2021. I've been doing emergency commissions to try and keep up with the room and food costs, but recently I've barely been getting work and its left us severely struggling the last couple months. The people that run the motel have been kind enough to extend our time but it's been two days without paying since even with us given extra time we haven't been able to pay them back for two days now; and we just got a call that we only have four hours to get the money together before we'll be kicked out.

Since we have no family or friends help with a home or money, or a car, we'll be on the streets if we cannot stay here. Our situation is incredibly dire and we seriously need any help we can get. Since we've missed the past two nights, we owe 150$ for tonight and we haven't been able to get a cent of what we need yet, so tonight really isn't looking good for us.

Hey Y'all I got in a serious car accident Friday and completely totaled my car. My sister started a GoFundMe for myself, my gf, and her sister to help us pay for food and rent while we recover. Update: we're back at square 1.

He got it back initially but they found another reason to get rid of him yesterday.

As if that isn't enough, the brakes on our only vehicle are pretty much 100% toast and our vehicle is nearly un drivable right now.

So, my husband suddenly got shitcanned today.

We live paycheck to paycheck and have 4 kids. We have about $400 until god knows when.

Also, our oldest has her birthday at the end of the month.

Needless to say, this fucking sucks.

Money is a huge anxiety source right now, so anything at all is enormously helpful. We'll be applying for All The Things™️.

Heyo, so.... Lost my job in the middle of September, I do have a new one now but it’s only working events so it’s not really reliable y’know? My roommates have also had their own issues with money and paying rent, and shit has just kinda snowballed like hell from there.

Yesterday we got a five-day notice to pay rent or else eviction proceedings would go to court. (Tbh I have no idea if sending the notice by email is legal/official/proper, but we don’t really have a foot to stand on here and while if it does go to court that may be a factor in our favor,,, obviously we would highly prefer Not to Go to Court.) 

Currently we owe $400, after some desperate asking friends for help, but then there’s December’s rent coming up frighteningly soon as well, which is a total of $1500 split among the three of us (myself and two roommates). Right now though the $400 is our priority.

Getting Back on My Feet

As many of you already know, I have been struggling financially for the past year. Most of it was mistakes that I made on my own, and part of it was that, well, I was not as ready to move out last year as I thought I was. Last year I was living with my father, who is not a great man. He is verbally and mentally abusive, selfish, and above all, not a good father. He does not know I am transgender, and I wanted to move out as soon as possible to get my own space to truly start being who I am. That situation made me believe I was ready to move out no matter the cost. And now, almost a year later, I am feeling that cost hard. I did not have and still have no savings, and I am currently living paycheck to paycheck along with the incredibly generous donations I have received these past few years from you absolutely wonderful people. The past 2 years have also had a decrease in sponsorships that I use to take from my streaming platform Streamelements, to the point that I have not completed a single sponsorship offer in 2023. My current situation is that by September first, I will not be earning any money from my job due to Bills, Rent, and Utilities, along with my own personal debt that I continue to bear. I want to be extremely clear that I am not looking for sympathy for credit cards or other past mistakes I have made, but I also need to be real with myself. I need to confront this problem head-on rather than the “band-aid” approach I have been taking to keep myself afloat. Starting from whenever I post this, I will be attempting to raise $650 by September first. $650 is my current rent at my apartment and the most expensive cost that I pay per month. The money raised from this will go to rent, allowing me to, for lack of better words, “have financial breathing room” and to put me into a more stable future. This is also the final time I make this kind of post. I want to be financially independent, and despite what some may think, I feel genuinely awful soliciting funds like this. Job and finances update:

My husband goes in to do paperwork for a job on Monday morning. So things look like they're gonna work out on that front, finally.

However, he went in today to donate plasma again and they deferred him because he has the absolute faintest fucking bruise left from last time.

Of course that's $100 we fucking NEEDED.
