Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894)
"The Floor Scrapers" (1875)
Oil on canvas
Located in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, France
The depiction of working-class people in their trade, not fully clothed, shocked the jurors of the Salon, Paris' most prestigious art exhibition, and was deemed a "vulgar subject matter". Calliebotte instead showed it at the second exhibition of the Impressionists.
