Chapter Eight of Twenty-Nine

A/N: HAPPY STAR WARS DAY!!! This may or may not have been spurred on by Oscar in Beirut. As in, I wrote the majority of this in one sitting after watching Oscar in Beirut. I’m not okay. It should be a sin to look that good honestly. Feedback and requests are always appreciated! :)

“We still on for pizza and a movie tonight?”

You smile brightly at the reminder of your plans. “Of course we are. You think I’d skip out on you and my favorite food?”

Poe can’t help smiling at the fact that you mentioned him before pizza. “I’m still waiting for you to get cold feet and realize you deserve better.”

You give him a stern yet light-hearted glare. “Never.”

That single word holds so much promise that it makes his head spin. He tries not to overthink it, because he’s sure his heart will beat right out of his chest for you if he does.

“I could get used to this.”

Poe has to agree with you on that. He’s not sure there’s anything better than having you in his arms, curled tightly together on the couch while watching reruns of Seinfeld. It shows his age that the show makes him reminisce so much, especially when you were in diapers when the final season aired.

Ben’s and Rey’s happily ever after (Where Ben doesn’t die)

I get that everyone wants them to have twins where one of them is at least named Hanna (Like Han) and the other one is named Hope, but here is my Reylo babies headcanon:

Ben and Rey don’t have children right away. They spend their first couple of years together wrapping up the war and helping Poe and Finn set up the new Republic

Broom Boy,Temiri Blagg, (From TLJ) finds Rey and becomes her first apprentice (Because Ben is not ready for that kind of responsible yet/ He’s afraid he will turn them dark) Basically, he trains Rey and she trains Temiri

Ben is forced to take over Temiri’s training when Rey becomes pregnant. (And it helps build his confidence to take on other apprentices later on in life).

Rey gives birth to twins (Of course!) Hope and Hanna

This is when Ben and Rey decide to settle down on the outskirts of Naboo.

They build a Jedi Temple where anyone is welcome to come and learn about the Force (They are both very against children being taken away from their parents)

They only take in orphans (Like Temiri) and allow other students to either commute or come learn a couple of weeks at a time

Rey is in charge of teaching the younger children while Ben focus’ on teaching those who are trying to redeem themself (Reformed criminals/Homeless)

The Mandalorian brings Baby Yoda to them to train (He finally completes his mission by reuniting Baby Yoda with his family/other Force users) and Ben and Rey invite him to stay. He lives out the rest of his life protecting the school and he is very happy that he gets to watch his son grow up in a safe and happy place.

Ben and Rey have their third and fourth daughters a couple of years apart (Because Ben’s deserves to be surrounded by women who are constantly telling him what to do and that he is wrong (Finn and Poe like to tease him that this the universe’s way of punishing him but in reality Ben loves it because they all remind him of Rey)

So Ben and Rey have FOUR daughters and it's like movie Little Women (2019) and their home is full of love and laughter

Hope - The oldest and is the most like Ben. She is the only one with black hair and dark brown eyes. She is the most responsible and the quietest. She likes to read and spends her free time doing artistic things like painting and calligraphy

Hanna - Hope’s twin sister. She is the “cool” one. She takes her namesake very seriously. She is the best flyer and takes the most risks. She is also the most outspoken and the one most likely to talk back. This gets her into trouble a lot.

Leia - She’s the “pretty” one. She doesn’t like to work very hard, but is very social/talkative. Out of the four, she is the least interested in becoming a Jedi. Once she grows up and matures a little bit, she becomes known for her generosity and enjoys organizing peaceful missions to driver food and supplies to struggle planets

Padmé - Nicknamed Pippa - She’s the youngest and has the most energy. Everyone loves her and she can make anyone laugh (Including her father). She is the best “fixer” and spends most of her time building things.

Temiri is like their Teddy. He is basically like Ben and Rey’s adopted son. He spends all of his free time with their daughters, playing games and hanging out.

Temiri is madly in love with their oldest, Hope

This is a big problem for Ben because he actually likes Temiri and has to accept that his daughter likes him back (But his other daughters are not allowed to date until they are at least 25)

Of course! Temiri and Hope are ten years apart because, you know, Star Wars

Whenever the girls get in trouble they always go to their father first (Because no matter what they did, it could never be as bad as what he did when he was younger)

Ben is very patient with them and puts a lot of energy into making sure that they feel that they have been heard.

Rey not so much.

Rey is more of the head of the family. Everything must go by her first. She is very protective of her family and would probably claw anyone’s eyes out if they insult her family

They both love their daughters very much and hate leaving them when they have to go on missions

It literally takes them like two hours to leave because Rey has to tell them five million times that they will return before Ben forces her onto the ship

Everyone loves it when Uncle Poe and Uncle Finn come to visit. Over the years, they have completely spoiled the girls by bring them treats and presents every time they visit

All four daughters (And Temiri) grow up to be Jedis but they follow their parent’s belief of accepting both the Light and Dark sides of the Forces.

The Jedis are no longer soldiers. They are known as peacekeepers. They work outside of the government protecting the helpless. They provide free humanitarian aid throughout the universe.

Now, I’ve made no secret that I loathe the new Star Wars movies. However, I do want to take a moment to point out all the potential that was there.

Fans of the movie will often say that people who disliked are...

1. Old school fans who wanted to see the OT cast be the main focus

2. Evil white men who hate women and minorities

3 (and the one I hate the most). Taking a movie about ‘space wizards’ too seriously.

However, this discounts the fact that many people WANTED to like the new movies; many who disliked the movies will admit that there was potential, even with the mess that we were given.

Let’s talk about Kylo Ren. I think Adam Driver did an amazing job with a character who had no internal consistency, or logic. I came out of the trilogy WANTING to like Kylo. I wanted to know more about him, despite being (as one YouTuber put it) the definition of tangled up Christmas Tree lights drenched in yogurt and acid.

Despite this inconsistency, despite his steady flipflopping around the screen, he had so much potential -why did Luke sense this potential for evil in him? Were the Knights of Ren the students who went with him? Why is he so intent on living up to Darth Vader? Where did this hero worship come from? Why was Snoke able to latch on to him? How did he even get to Snoke as a presumably young teenager? Why is he so desperate for Rey to love him back?

(Be advised: Spoilers for all three Star Wars sequels below)

One of the moments that evoked a heartfelt emotion in meme, while watching these movies, the only memorable moment I felt an emotion other than disgust or annoyance watching this, was when Kylo tells Rey, “You’re nothing; a nobody. You have no place in this story,” while seemingly choked with emotion. Here is a man, desperate for this woman to come with him. He’s telling her that, sure, maybe she doesn’t have a place in this large, intergalactic war, but she has a place with him. He doesn’t care that she’s a nobody; he wants her as she is. She can be a nobody to everyone else, but to him, she’s important, and she has a place in his story.

I wanted so much more from this! Is Kylo so desperate for love because everyone was always too busy for him as a child -Leia organizing the Republic, Han at her side? Or, if Han and Leia had broken up before he went off to Luke for training, was he stuck in the middle of their fighting?

While he was training with Luke, what was their relationship? Why did the sting of Luke’s betrayal drive him to become a near-sociopathic mass murderer, trying to resurrect the Empire? Did he love his Uncle? Idolize him? Was Luke the only one there for him as a child? Is that why Luke’s betrayal drove him into such a frenzy?

What about Kylo and Chewbacca? In the Rise of Skywalker, we see that he’s captured Chewbacca, yet we’re given no emotion in this scene.Think of the lost potential here!

“Chewie. I’m sorry it came to this; you were always kind to me, and you don’t deserve this.”

Or how about...

“My father was always so busy with you, Han and Chewie, off to save the world; you were more family to him than I ever was.”

Either of those lines would’ve given us so much more background on the two of them, and would’ve been a highly emotional scene for both the old fans, and the new fans.

Why was he so prone to fits of rage whenever something went poorly? Was he afraid of failure? Afraid that Snoke would turn on him, as Luke had? Was he trying to prove that he could be better than Luke, the uncle who betrayed him?

What was his life like, after leaving Luke? I’m fairly positive we can all agree that Snoke wasn’t ‘kind’ or ‘nurturing’ to Kylo; were failures punished with torture, or humiliation? That would explain the outbursts of rage whenever something doesn’t go according to plan. Was he raised to believe that only Snoke could teach him the true secrets of the Force?

After all, we see that Kylo is incredibly powerful in the Force; he’s able to stop blaster bolts in midair, rather than deflect them. He’s able to pull the information he wants directly from someone’s mind. He’s able to hold his own against Rey in Rise of Skywalker, keeping her from pulling the ship back down.

So why was he content to be on an equal footing with Hux for two movies? Why did he never rise up against Snoke, to take over as Supreme Leader? Why did he allow Snoke to humiliate him in front of Hux? Why would someone as powerful as Kylo Ren allow Snoke to belittle him, calling him a child, in front of Hux, his rival? Why wouldn’t he have argued the point, or at least try to defend his actions?

Let’s switch over to Poe. We’re told that Poe is the ‘greatest pilot in the Resistance’ -that is all we have to work with for 2 and 2/3rds of these movies; no other background is given. Eventually we find out that he was a spice runner (the drug du jour in Star Wars), and he ‘betrayed’ his old crew -however, we don’t know how he ended up as a smuggler, or what that ‘betrayal’ actually was.

For example: in the books, we find out that Han -who didn’t have a last name at the time -was simply a child that a group of smugglers picked up somewhere, and raised by Dewlanna -a female Wookie who took care of him, and protected him until her death in his teenage years. This drives him to leave the smuggling crew, and eventually join the Empire (yeah, Han wanted to be a Tie fighter pilot). However, when he sees a storm trooper beating Chewbacca, he kills the storm trooper to save him, telling Chewie later that he owed a life debt to Dewlanna, and since he’d never been able to repay that debt, he’d saved Chewie.

What if we were given something similar with Poe? Perhaps he and Zorii were orphans together on Kijimi; they grew up together, and always had each other’s backs. Eventually, through their street smarts, they and their friends turn themselves into a gang, eventually earning enough money to buy their own ship, and begin smuggling spice. However, perhaps during one of their smuggling runs, they accidentally kill an innocent bystander; perhaps Poe sees one of their crew OD and turn into a mindless vegetable after a bad hit of spice. Perhaps he sees the First Order kill a settlement of villagers while they’re off world. Any number of these things could drive Poe to forsake his old life, and flee to the Resistance. He leaves everything behind, including Zorii, the woman he loves, to try and clear his conscience.

Any of these would’ve given us a reason to understand Poe better; as it stands, all we know is that he used to run drugs, and now he’s just a super good pilot who defected to the Resistance for some reason, and ended up as a Commander. How did he learn to fly an X-wing? How did he become such a great pilot? How did he become a Commander?

We see, frequently and repeatedly, that Poe is afraid of nothing; that he’s able to resist interrogation without giving up information, forcing Kylo to eventually use the Force to pull the information from him. We see that’s he brave, and he is -at heart -a good man; the death of the villagers in the opening scene of The Force Awakens shows that he was unwilling to leave this village of innocent people to their fate; that despite being hopelessly outnumbered, outmanned, and outclassed, he stays to try and help them.

Yet we have no idea why he does these things; we have no background information on him, so we’re unable to truly appreciate these actions. Is he just a guy who won’t ever run from a fight? Does he have a personal beef with the First Order? Did he believe that he would be able to buy time for someone to come and save him?

We don’t know, so his actions mean nothing to us. Hell, for all the background we have on this character, he could’ve been a blind idiot, who couldn’t see how many storm troopers there were until it was too late, and his actions were simply him screwing up, and not heroic at all.

And then there’s Finn. Finn, who was the first Storm trooper given a face. The disappointment with his character was immense. How did he end up so happy go lucky, so bumbling, given his supposed brainwashing into something that had one purpose: to kill.

We’re given the impression that the storm trooper Poe kills -the one who leaves the blood on Finn’s helmet -was his friend; how did they become friends? What impact did this other storm trooper have on him? How was he even able to form an emotional connection with someone, if he was raised as a child soldier, and brainwashed to hate and kill?

What, exactly, did this ‘training’ consist of? Was it propaganda, like the Nazi Youth? Was it torturous and cruel, punishing them for any act of kindness, or empathy? A mix of the two?

And how was Finn able to overcome this upbringing? How as he able to remain such an empathetic, protective adult, with a sense of humor on top of it? Could any stormtrooper defect as easily? Was it something from his home world, some small memory of a ‘life before’ that he was able to hold on to? Did something happen during his training to jolt him out of his ‘programming’?

With this character alone, the possibilities were endless; this was completely uncharted territory. We could have been given any background on this, and it would’ve been brilliant. However, we were given nothing more than it happened.

If we were given answers to even ONE of the numerous questions I’ve asked, even just one per character, it would’ve given us reason to root for these people. Reason to love them, reason to hate them, or a reason to sympathize with them.

Look at the characters from the OT -we know that Luke was only searching for adventure, to begin with. To save the damsel in distress, the chance to be a hero -something that a bored farm boy from the middle of nowhere couldn’t pass up, particularly when we’re told his friends were off fighting.

Leia was raised by her adoptive father into the Rebellion- Bail Organa was one of the founders of the Rebellion, and one of its most prominent leaders. After the destruction of her home world, we see that it becomes a personal vendetta for her, to make the Empire pay for the deaths of her friends, her family, and her planet.

Han was a smuggler: he was just there to get paid, and accidentally got stuck fighting. He insists he’s only in it for the money, a cold-blooded businessman, until he starts to fall for Leia. Until he realizes that Luke needs him, and will die without his aid.

In the OT, we’re given characters with background, characters with depth. Characters whose actions we understand, because we’re given details about them as characters.

And before someone says, ‘time constraints’... I would like to point out that these three movies combined were seven hours, and fifteen minutes long. Seven hours and change, for zero character development. Hell, we spend 152 minutes (TLJ) watching a slow speed space chase, that -as it turns out -was redundant anyways. 2/3rds of The Last Jedi ended up being completely pointless, as we find out, and Finn and Rose’s quest was pointless. Finn’s mutiny was pointless.

Most of the suggestions I made above could’ve been given with a line or two of dialogue.

Here are a few quick lines that would answer many of these questions. Mind you, I’ve taken minimal time to come up with these; most of them are off the top of my head as I sit here.

Kylo:

“No one has ever understood me; I’ve been alone my entire life.”

“Luke was my hero; my idol. I looked up to him, I wanted to be him, and he betrayed me. Tried to kill me in sleep. He didn’t even have the courage to look me in the eye.”

“My parents didn’t know how to deal with my strength in the Force, so they shipped me off to Luke as soon as they could; they didn’t even try to understand me.”

Snoke: “Careful, Kylo; you know the price of your arrogance. Or do I need to remind you again? Do not think yourself above being taught a lesson about your station.”

Poe:

“Yes, I ran spice, okay? Is that what you wanna hear? I was young, I was stupid, and I was just trying to survive. You wanna criticize me for that, go ahead. But I had nothing, and nobody aside from Zurii, and we did what we had to do.”

While being tortured by the First Order: “You guys think this is torture? My friends used to hit me harder just to wake me up!”

When Holdo tells him to just ‘have hope’: “Look, lady, I grew up in Kijimi; ‘hope’ wasn’t gonna feed us, ‘hope’ wasn’t gonna give us somewhere to sleep with a roof over our heads. Doing nothing gets you killed faster than doing the wrong thing.”

While in the desert of Passaana: “There’s always First Order patrols in outer rim worlds like this; when I was a kid on Kijimi, they’d beat you down just for walking in front of them.” or “There were festivals like this when I was a kid on Kijimi; I used to watch ‘em and wonder what it would be like to actually celebrate it. Don’t suppose we have time now.”

Finn:

“Look, something about me was always off, okay? I don’t know why, but I always just... knew that what we were learning was wrong.”

“I don’t remember much about my parents, but I remember my mom used to tell me stories. About Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, and their adventures.”

“There was one man, who trained us. He was... nice, in his own way. He used to try and help us when he could, comfort us after we’d been punished. They made me kill him.”

“I’ve spent my whole life trying to avoid being the killer they wanted me to be; now you’re asking me to become a killer for your side.”

These lines would’ve taken a minute; one minute, perhaps two at most. 12 lines that would’ve given us details about these characters. Even at two minutes, that’s 24 minutes across a series of movies that was 429 minutes long.

Instead, we were given mere hints of the characters these people could’ve been. The smallest glimpses of stories and backgrounds that would’ve made these characters amazing.

That aggravates me worse than the terrible story-telling; there was potential here, and they just squandered it.

The ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ review no one asked for

I wanted to enjoy it. I really did.

I was one of the people who didn’t dislike The Last Jedi. Sure, I didn’t love it. When I watched it, I thought it was too long and had made certain characters choices I wasn’t too happy with, but overall it was enjoyable and left me feeling satisfied. It was not as good as The Force Awakens however and hearing JJ Abrams was returning, I thought he might be able to restore the final episode to its former glory.

That indeed seemed like the case for the first hour. The gang were back together, it was quick-paced, I had an emotional investment in what was going on (and it seemed like they were taking the Finnrey route I wanted them too). I couldn’t exactly follow every plot specific but does that really matter in Star Wars when it’s so exciting? The bit on Star Killer base was genuinely inspired, I was laughing away at once again what terrible shots the stormtroopers were and at Hux being the spy. Every scene with Lando in was gold.

It was just after they got to the water planet that things started to go wrong. I’m not sure quite what it was exactly that made it so disappointing from this point onwards. Perhaps the gang splitting up or the rather horrifically done Leia death scene. I know they didn’t really have much choice with what footage they had but having watched each member of the original trio died, this death was devoid of emotion and predictable. And she died to make Kylo Ren hesitate for one moment. What a waste!

Then the pointless force ghosts! Seeing Luke was nice but it felt like he was just there to add clunky explanation since the plot made so little sense at this point. And when Han appeared, I actually laughed. It was so inconsistent with the tone of the film and he appeared all while Kylo Ren was standing in the middle of a stormy sea that he could fall into at any moment, right in the most climactic section of the film, just to have a conversation with the son who killed him! It was the most outrageous example of a fan service cameo that just didn’t assimilate with the rest of the film.

I don’t actually have a problem with Rey Palpatine. If anything, I thought it was really cool she was a Palpatine. I really didn’t want her to be a Skywalker because I felt it would be predictable and repetitive. Her being a Palpatine also sends the message to young viewers that blood relations don’t make a family which I think is very important for children to hear. Honestly, the only problem I have with it is that it means some poor lady had sex with Palpatine. I agree that it was a ridiculous retcon of The Last Jedi but then I didn’t like the reveal about her parents in TLJ anyway because of how it was executed. Another thing that bothers me about it is the utter lack of information we get about Villanelle Rey’s mother. Already we don’t know much about her father other than that he’s Palpatine’s son but with her mother, we get nothing. With Rey having wondered about who her parents were for so long, surely it would make sense for her to want to know more about her mother and maybe even take her surname in place of ‘Palpatine’. I also firmly believe Rey’s mother should have been played by Hayley Atwell because she looks so much like Daisy Ridley. And while Jodie Comer is an amazing actress, I think 1. She deserves a bigger role in the Star Wars franchise and 2. Her casting as Rey’s mother exemplifies Hollywood’s fear of casting older actresses as mothers. A twenty six year old as a mother!?

About Zurii, I always appreciate new female characters in Star Wars and I thought she had a great design. However, it is blatantly clear what her purpose in the film was. It was to stop people calling Poe gay, inserting a female character for one scene (she barely spoke in her other scenes so I’m not counting those) with no backstory of her own, just to prove he is attracted to women. Well, first of all, he can be bi, secondly, that’s not going to stop people shipping Finnpoe at all. I didn’t clock until afterwards when I saw people talking about it online, but it was super problematic to make Poe a former drug dealer. Sure, the only Latino character in this trilogy. Also, it in general complicates the little we know about Poe’s backstory so far.

With Rose, all our worst fears were confirmed. She just wasn’t there. She appeared in a couple of scenes and had some lines but you’d think she was no more than another miscellaneous rebel, no more significant a role than Billie Lourd’s character. Did they really give into the white fanboy pressure? How could they erase Rose when she was such a good character? She was tough and fought strongly for her beliefs, but she was also compassionate, sensitive. Now, I never particularly shipped Finn and Rose in TLJ. I thought it seemed a bit of a rushed romance and Finn didn’t seem that invested in the kiss they shared. However, you can’t just pretend they didn’t kiss in the last film. They interacted a few times but there was no sense of any bond between them. Where there relationship stood was unclear. Were they now a couple or had they had an offscreen conversation where they decided they were better off as friends? Who knows?

And now onto the worst part of the film: Kylo Ren and more specifically that kiss. Gross. Okay, to be clear, I wasn’t entirely opposed to a redemption arc for Kylo Ren. Sure, it would be predictable, but it’s not like Kylo Ren’s crimes are any worse than those of Darth Vader and he was still capable of redemption. I liked Kylo Ren as a villain. He perfectly depicted that type of whiny, entitled white man who we see so commonly in real life, but again, he could have achieved some redemption if it were implemented correctly. What we got in the film was not this. He was still committing genocide at the start and carried out one good deed which was saving the woman he had a crush on. For this one good act, he was entirely forgiven and somehow all of the genocide wasn’t his fault. And he got rewarded with the woman! If anything, I’d call that act selfish since he only wanted to save the woman he liked. Adam Driver did the best he could with it but everything about it was awful. And it was out of character for Rey to kiss him and forgive him. She stabbed him little more than half an hour earlier! At the end of the last film, she slammed a door in his face. It makes no sense to me how she could suddenly be so invested in him becoming a better person. There’s also the fact that wasn’t included in the films that Rey and Kylo Ren are related (aunt and nephew to be exact). I wasn’t aware this was Game of Thrones! And according to Wookiepedia, Rey was 18 at the start of the films and is now 20 whereas Kylo Ren is now 30. A ten year age different would be fine if Rey were older but at this point, the age gap is uncomfortable and very borderline.

If they’re going to make the claim that it wasn’t actually Kylo Ren who was doing the evil deeds but some dark force corrupting him, they should have explained how the mechanism works. At least in the prequels, we got some sense of Anakin slowly being corrupted. To me, it reads like in some horror films when the abusive characters are found to have been possessed by demons or something. It trivializes abuse which is something very real, acting instead as if no abusers can actually be responsible for their actions and it is the cause of some supernatural force instead. I suppose the kiss doesn’t have to mean anything. After all, Leia and Luke kissed in the original trilogy and Finn and Rose kissed and apparently that meant nothing.

I firmly believe the series intended a Finn and Rey romance. Lest we forget The Force Awakens, Finn awkwardly asking Rey if she had a boyfriend. That was clear coding for him having a crush on her. In that film, the two developed such a strong bond, and they have so much more chemistry than Rey and Kylo Ren ever had. All the scenes with Rey and Finn (and Poe) were full of light and emotion. The scene at the end where the three of them hugged was honestly the high point of the film. Now, when I left the cinema, what was plaguing my mind the most was that throughout the film, Finn had a secret he wanted to tell Rey. It was first suggested when they thought they were going to die in the quicksand. “Wait, Rey, I never told you!” It had to be that he loved her. What else could it be? Supposedly, it was that he was force sensitive. I don’t believe that for one second. If he needed to tell her that, why couldn’t Poe be included? And why did he never get the chance to tell her? It was a build-up I got invested in with no payoff. It must have been that he loved her. So, if that was the case, that leaves us with two options. Either there was a Finnrey subplot that got cut but they forgot to cut these scenes out (or simply couldn’t be bothered to), or they thought it would be funny to have the black supposed male lead chasing after the white female lead who didn’t love him back because she was instead in love with the genocidal white villain. I ship Finnrey so much and find the second option so horrific but I wouldn’t put it past the writers. Finn played such a significant role in the first half of the film, as he should since he’s meant to be the male lead in the series, but after that, he was dangerously underutilized. At least the ending where no one ends up with each other is compliant with my headcanon that Rey, Finn and Poe (and I don’t mind Rose being in the mix too) all end up married to each other and adopt a bunch of porgs.

And lastly, the lesbian scene. Pathetic. We don’t know the character names and I can’t even find out who the actresses were that played them. Okay, they kissed which is a pretty big deal (even though kisses apparently mean nothing in Star Wars) and it’s certainly a step forward from the Avengers: Endgame ‘’’’representation’’’’, but it’s still rather useless considering the big deal JJ Abrams made about how there would be representation.

I did! Thanks for your interest haha. I just wanna quickly preface this by saying that I know that SW is very polarizing and that the fandom can be very toxic, people are passionate about their opinions, etc. I don’t want to step on any toes with my opinions. I don’t often post in depth or candidly about SW because I have friends from all parts of the fandom and I’d hate to hurt someone’s feelings. But these are my opinions! (Under a cut :D)

I loved the movie. At first I wasn’t sure, but I saw it a second time with a friend and I loved it. Does it have plot holes, inconsistencies, and issues? Absolutely. It does. It’s far from perfect and I absolutely understand why so many people have such intensely negative reactions to it.

But if I’m being 100% honest I just wasn’t one of those people. Yes, it was rushed. But that made it interesting from start to finish. I almost always step out to use the restroom during a movie in theaters. I think it’s a mental thing–I’m constantly thinking of how I DON’T want to step out to pee, so I always have to haha. But I didn’t even think about it once during this movie! I just had that much fun watching it.

I can acknowledge that it had a lot of weaknesses, though, and I’ll talk about that first. I think most of the issues were a result of the film being the end of a trilogy that was helmed by two different people. It felt confused to me at points because I could see where JJ was trying to stick to what he clearly wanted to explore post-TFA while also trying to pick up where Rian Johnson left off post-TLJ. It’s like they had different visions and JJ was trying to include aspects of both in TROS. In a lot of ways, that didn’t work. I don’t want to go into too many nitpicky details but I can sum up my one big gripe by saying I think Finn was done wrong.

I think this movie had a lot of big character moments for Rey, Ben, and Poe, but I don’t feel like Finn got his due. I also think that from a shipping standpoint he was treated really unfairly. I genuinely felt while watching TFA that JJ was trying to lay the groundwork for canon Finnrey. In TLJ, Johnson went in a different direction with Finnrose and Reylo. So the problem, to me, is that in TROS JJ tried to follow up with Johnson’s Reylo groundwork while still including nuggets of Finnrey. Watching the film, it seems abundantly clear to me that Finn was harboring feelings for Rey that were unrequited. His devotion to her felt one-sided and the almost-love-confession in the sinking sand seemed to confirm that for me. I realize at some fan panel JJ apparently said that what Finn was really going to confess was that he was Force-sensitive, not that he loved Rey. But any viewer watching the movie without that knowledge would not get that from it imo, so the average viewer is left thinking the writing left Finn in unrequited love with Rey. And the writing completely brushed the Finnrose relationship to the side. I’m a Finnrey shipper so I didn’t really love Finnrose to begin with. But since Johnson started it, I honestly don’t know why JJ didn’t just continue it if he was going to continue Reylo. It seems better than spending time establishing Finn’s continued feelings for Rey only to leave him alone, especially since TLJ ended with Finnrose: it should have been easy enough to pick up their relationship and carry it forward. I know unrequited love exists, and exploring it in fiction can be poignant. But in this case it just didn’t track to me, and felt like a slap in the face to Finn’s character and anyone who was shipping Finnrey, Finnrose, or even Finnpoe. There seemed to be no reason to write Finn’s actions toward Rey the way they did if they weren’t going to put them together. Finn wasn’t together with anyone in the end. And in the same vein, shoehorning in a past romance for Poe with Keri Russell’s character just felt like a cheap way to make sure Finnpoe wasn’t going to happen. Idk. But these were the only aspects I really didn’t like.

I loved the many displays of Rey’s incredible power. I loved seeing Rey use the Force to heal, just like we saw Baby Yoda do in that week’s episode of The Mandalorian. I thought the scene where she accidentally used Force lightning was chilling and interesting foreshadowing for Rey Palpatine, even though I don’t really love that she’s a Palpatine. That being said, as a scorned Dany fan, I really enjoyed the message that who you are by blood should not define you. GoT ultimately ended with the message that your family and your family’s legacy are inescapable, grim realities. TROS had a much more hopeful message. This is also an important message to me personally because I have a lot of baggage with my father and his side of the family. It’s something I’ve struggled with. I never want to be like him. That aspect of Rey’s inner conflict was really beautiful to me and I think Daisy portrayed her struggle with darkness very well. I also thought her vision of dark!Rey was terrifying and really well done. The scene of her looking in the mirror at herself under Ahch-To in TLJ was probably my favorite scene of that movie so I liked seeing JJ utilize similar imagery there.

I loved seeing the trio together on a mission. The chemistry between Daisy, John, and Oscar is excellent and the comedy and wholesomeness between them is what made the movie so fun and memorable imo. I would have been happy with an OT3 for their characters, but c’est la vie haha.I loved the fan service. What can I say? I’m a fan: I like to be serviced lol. I know it was cheesy to some people, but Force Ghost!Luke lifting his X-Wing out of the water for Rey made me tear up. It was a nice callback to the moment with Luke and Yoda on Dagobah. Speaking of callbacks, I also loved the final shot with the binary sunset on Tatooine. I’ll admit I don’t really get why Rey has BB-8, or why she’s alone, or why she would choose to live in a place that even Luke wanted desperately to leave… but the visual and musical parallel to ANH got me right in the feels in the best way.

I loved seeing Ian McDiarmid return as Palpatine, who was as delightfully evil as ever. I don’t really understand how or why Palpatine had to come back, and I am not satisfied with the explanation for Snoke. But the Emperor is a classic and an iconic character I love. Having him as the ultimate baddy was satisfying in its own way. I also thought everything abot Exegol and the Sith fortress was terrifying and visually stunning. Even the sound effects of the lightning, and the way that blended with ominous music, was really interesting to me. I loved almost every sequence that took place on Exegol.

Lastly, (and this is the part I have been nervous to post about haha) I liked Ben Solo. I am not a Reylo shipper. That’s not something I talk about really because I have a ton of Reylo friends and I really treasure those people. The last thing I want to do is hurt their feelings or make them feel unwelcome on my blog. But In TFA and TLJ I didn’t really see that many redeeming qualities in Kylo Ren, and I certainly don’t ship him with Rey. I liked the character as a villain from the first moment I heard Adam Driver’s epic voice and saw Kylo Ren freeze Poe’s blaster bolt in stasis using the Force. I thought he was cool and I loved the crazy sound effects and unstable appearance of his unique lightsaber. But I just didn’t really romanticize him at all. I also thought TLJ ended on a pretty definitively negative note for the character. He told his men in no uncertain terms to blow the Falcon out of the sky with Rey in it. And I didn’t think killing Han and trying to kill Luke was something he was going to come back from. I didn’t really want “Bendemption.”

I say all this because I think this is one of the reasons why TROS impressed me so much. When it actually happened, I was happy that Kylo was redeemed as Ben. The scene with Han reminded me that above all, this is Han and Leia’s son. No matter how much of a villain I thought Kylo Ren was, I didn’t want Han and Leia both to die and for their son to die in disgrace without ever having made amends for the things he’d done. I couldn’t love Han and Leia the way I do without hoping for some semblance of peace for their family. And when he took off the Kylo Ren getup and dressed more like a regular guy, when he adopted some of Han’s personality, when he stormed into Palpatine’s lair on Exegol blaster blazing, and most of all when he wielded a Jedi’s lightsaber alongside Rey, I loved it. I really, truly loved it. And for someone who went into the movie theater expecting to hate that aspect of the story, I think that speaks volumes. They won me over. They made me like Ben Solo. I don’t really think it’s a great social message for the real world in 2019 to forgive him despite all he’s done. But if I divorce it from real-world implications and just treat it like Star Wars, I’m actually glad it happened the way it did. Leia deserved to have her death mean something. She gave the last of her strength to reach out to her son. Not to Kylo Ren, but to Ben Solo. She and the audience both deserved to see Ben Solo before the end. And for him to make the ultimate sacrifice for Rey was, to me, the best possible way he could go out. I found it to be a very compelling end. His death made me surprisingly sad, but it was a noble death.

Anyway, like I said above, I know the movie has a lot of issues. I haven’t even addressed a fraction of the things I could say about this movie–both good and bad. But ultimately I boil it down to how a movie makes me feel. This one left a strong emotional impact on me and I was happy to watch it a second time. I laughed, I cried, I reflected on why I’ve loved Star Wars for my entire life. So I have to say I liked it. Sorry for the giant answer haha :P

Okay, just gimme a minute to screech about The Mandalorian

Just watched the season 1 finale today and I’d like to vomit my disorganized thoughts before I begin the long wait for season two (or at least the inevitable rewatch) because I’m just so delighted with this series. If anyone is planning to watch but hasn’t yet, beware of The Spoilers below the cut. Also, it’s really long under there.

First of all, can I just say how refreshing the format was for a Star Wars property? I know some people didn’t like that a number of the episodes were “filler,” but god I LOVE monster of the week style shows! It just allows you to... abide in a fictional universe that doesn’t feel as up-close if you’re constantly zipping along the path of a plot (not that plot is bad, of course). It really captured the feeling of old serialized storytelling, or genre shows like Supernatural, Merlin, or Grimm, while also nailing that space gunslinger atmosphere in a setting I already love.

And speaking of space gunslinger, I was so ready to be indifferent to this focus character when my dad persuaded me to start watching. I was just off the bat convinced we were going to get a stock, grim badass trying to capture the spirit of the Boba Fett craze with a different coat of paint. But no, I can genuinely say I really love Mando as a character in his own right. He can be blunt at points and can certainly open up a can of whoopass when he needs to, but most of the time he’s just.... nice! He’s respectful and pretty polite, while having his points of frustration and annoyance. He doesn’t jump immediately to violence when there are alternatives, like being respectful of the Tuskan Raiders’ lands and addressing them in their language. He’s got damage, but he doesn’t wallow in it, but rather turns it into empathy for other people that are suffering and doing what he can to help them. His devotion to his creed and the people that took him in give him a depth I wasn’t expecting. And when he finds people to care about, you can tell he REALLY cares.

Related to above but deserving its own separate bullet point, Mando and Baby Yoda. Like... bounty hunter adopts small child and has adventures with it was not a plot I was expecting but I’m so happy that it was what we got. Found family is my THING, and this show came through on that relationship. And it really was a relationship, even if the other half is just a baby. You get Mando going from feeling honor-bound to help the kid and finding somewhere safe to drop him to genuinely caring about this little bugger. Baby Yoda himself also has a slow progression of becoming more aware of the situation around him, getting smarter about staying alive in all these dangerous situations, and growing more protective of his guardian at the same time. So in the finale, when they’re officially declared adopted dad and adopted kid by Mandalorian custom until further notice, it feels legit and earned, not just a fandom joke.

And Baby Yoda himself is something they did well. It’s not just a cute puppet meant to be hauled around and to sell toys, that kid has a personality, and that personality is Little Shit. He’s constantly fucking around with things, cackling in dangerous situations. I think they struck a good balance of having him be vital to the plot without overusing him or the cute factor.

I’ve been ranting about this since episode 4, but what this show does with the scale of the conflict just drives me bananas. Absolutely batshit with joy. When TROS is summoning ten thousand star destroyers from literal nowhere, ALL of which are mounted with Death Star cannons, I can only facepalm at how far the power creep has run away from the creators. In Mandalorian though? They take things that have previously been jokes in Star Wars and make them into real threats. When the only force sensitive person in the show is a literal infant and everyone else is running around on the ground with blasters, it almost becomes a completely different universe. A single AT-ST in episode 4 becomes a massive and genuinely intimidating threat for a bunch of foot soldiers, most of whom are untrained and under-equipped. I out-loud exclaimed “Oh shit, they’re screwed” when a single TIE fighter entered the battlefield in episode 7. Even stormtroopers, outside of targeted gags, are something to be taken seriously when they’re in numbers.

In relation, this is another thing I really like about Mando as a character. People in-universe regularly comment that Mandalorians, both this one specifically and the people as a whole, are kickass, and they are. But that doesn’t mean they’re invulnerable or supernatural in their abilities. They’re just really tough people with some cool gadgets. Mando isn’t cutting through swathes of enemies with ease; he gets knocked down, injured, and his life is in danger constantly, especially when he’s alone against a threat. It doesn’t make him less of a talented warrior; it just makes him more human, and as equally reliant on his smarts and non-martial skills to keep himself alive.

Side characters! I loved them (most of them). By the end of the series I was bummed as hell that we weren’t going to get a DnD style party of them joining up with Mando and Son as their crew. It felt a lot like Rogue One: fairly simple characters with a few core traits, but they were such likable traits and their motivations made perfect sense, so even with the short amount of time they got, they still resonated. Cara especially I loved for multiple reasons. I really appreciate that they made this big, brash, kickass woman character and nothing felt tropey about her; she felt genuine. I love the battle bros relationship she grew with Mando, and how sincere it felt without even a suggestion of some romantic subtext between them. They appreciated each other’s skills at first, but you can see it grow into genuine respect and care for one another. They got the time to hang out together during those weeks on Sorgan, chat about their lives, arm wrestle together, make jokes. It was that kind of relationship building, even just a little bit of it, that I was missing in the sequel trilogy and that made the Rey/Finn/Poe triad feel so hollow despite how much I wanted to care for them.

I love how (and I say this with true sincerity and appreciation) how bloody inconsequential and small these characters and this story feel in the grand universe of Star Wars. Really! None of these characters have any relevance to the greater SW narrative they live in the middle of. Mando’s got a reputation, but only in certain circles. Cara was a rebel, but she deserted years ago after all the important shit was over with. Even Baby Yoda and the former Imperial force after him feels so small scale in comparison to everything that came before and will come after. The fate of the galaxy isn’t in their hands, what they’re doing doesn’t really matter on a grand scale. Even so, it matters to these characters. When Kuiil chose to leave the peaceful retirement he’d won after so long, when he chose to go back into danger because he didn’t want to see someone else be harmed by the lingering influence of the old evil regime, it really struck a chord with me. What they do in the finale, and the good deeds Mando does throughout the series, might not shake the foundations of the galaxy, but it is fighting back against the darkness that’s hung over it for so long in their own way. Changing the world a little bit at a time.

I admit, as much as I love the Jedi, it’s really nice to see the SW universe from a perspective other than theirs. I’ve never been all that interested in getting into content outside of the movies before, but this might be enough to push me toward stuff like the Clone Wars just for more of that. Definitely makes the universe feel richer.

The galaxy! Actually feels! Like a galaxy! Take notes! New Trilogy writers! The episodic format actually lets the locations breathe a little while still getting enough mileage to make things feel broad at the same time, rather than jumping around so quickly that planets feel confined to a single location and have no depth to them at all. The Mandalorian felt like flying around in Mass Effect: there isn’t actually a whole lot to explore, but there’s just enough lore there and enough of a story can unfold in the different locations to give them meaning. If there was one thing I’d want to change or add, I’d love to see an episode take place in a less backwater setting, like a big city or busy space port. I understand the budget concerns, as well as maintaining the Western/lone ranger genre and tone, but it would definitely add in some life and have plenty of adventure opportunities.

Allow me one more detour back to Mando, and specifically the helmet removal scene. I just love how they did it. Could have made him stoic and cool, but they didn’t. He ain’t some young, handsome rogue under there (although I certainly wouldn’t say Pedro Pascal doesn’t have looks). He’s got some years under his belt, he’s dinged up and bloody and sweaty, his hair’s a mess, and he looks like a rabbit in headlights. Once again, standing O for making a badass action hero that’s still allowed to be vulnerable, human, and a bit of a mess sometimes.

Like... all of IG-11, both his first appearance and in the finale. Other people have already gone into detail about that, so I’ll just say ditto, I love him.

The freaking Scout Trooper scene, man. That shit had me howling. You don’t really think about troopers much, they’re just cannon fodder shouting stock lines a lot of the time, but there are still people under there. Finn kinda helped me wake up to that, but these guys were a hilarious flipside to that. Just two dumb fuckin’ idiots making idiot talk at work.

Mando earning his sigil and jetpack, and then his first flight.... *chef’s kiss*. I am such a SUCKER for first flight scenes, and this one was awesome. If Disney wasn’t such a copyright Nazi, I would have already made a short crack vid of that scene with Defying Gravity over it.

That’s a lot of thoughts up there, but I’ll conclude with this one. I just had... fun. The Mandalorian was fun! Not in a guilty pleasure way, but it didn’t need to be in an Oscar-worthy way either. It was just a series of adventures I was delighted to tag along on, with characters I truly came to care about. And at the end of the day, it ended on a triumphant and patently Star Wars hopeful note that delighted me and filled me with anticipation for future adventures to come.

TROS Review

I’ll start by saying something I already did: I liked the movie, but it wasn’t a good film.

What I mean by that is, as a fan, I like some of the beats it hit. It had good trio moments, good stuff for Rey and Finn individually, as well as Leia, and I genuinely enjoyed those. The pacing, however, was interesting. The entire first quarter of the movie was driven by plot devices and shock value, and I found myself wondering, after they went to yet another planet to find the macguffin, when the real plot was going to happen. Things picked up in the second half, but there were still some weird choices made. Specifics below:

Stuff I did like:

Force Sensitive Finn! It’s about damn time, honestly, but I’m very glad that Finn got to realize the Force within him (and I think that’s what he was trying to tell Rey this whole time? This was unclear). The fact that he had some conflict with both Rey and Poe over that was also great.

I thought I was going to hate Rey Palpatine a lot more than I did. Because of JJ spinning it into a “it doesn’t matter who your bloodline is, as long as you choose your family/destiny” theme, I didn’t mind it as much. Still kind of cheesy, but not the worst way they could have gone about it. I like Rey adopting the Skywalker name.

I was hoping for “power-drunk bastard” Kylo and I did cherish him while I had him. The fact that he was determined enough to find the Wayfinders and find actual literal Palpatine was pretty neat. The fact that he was also briefly power-drunk enough to try to turn Rey into his equal in the dark side was pretty cool too.

This movie surrounded the Force in general--Kylo and Rey are good saber duelists, but they aren’t the best, so I think it was a smart decision to focus more of their impressive feats on the Force.

General Poe! I really wish it didn’t have to happen like that, but I’m so glad to see Poe Dameron get his due in this regard. His fear at leading and everyone comforting him along the way was a good story to tell.

The actual creepy, cultlike aesthetic of the Sith was really fun in the last half, complete with faceless crowds and soul-transfer rituals.

I have wanted Rey with a yellow lightsaber for SO LONG and I finally get it, yeehaw everyone.

The entire trio dynamic was really great. They promised a movie with them and it delivered. In particular, the Poe and Rey dynamic really picked up the slack from the last two movies. Finn’s dynamic with Poe and Rey were the sweetest things, and the end of the movie really showed that he found family and love with those two.

Chewbacca is great, and I’m glad he got a scene where he could mourn.

I’m also glad he at least got to say hi to Lando.

Jedi Master Leia!!!! I’m so happy that it’s canon that she got trained as Jedi and that she’s Rey’s Master and Rey feels connected to her which makes sense because Leia actually put time and effort into training her (no offense Luke, your Force Ghost cameo was really powerful too and nice).

Loved Jannah’s plot with the group of deserter stormtroopers (and the fact that all of them are implied to either be in-tune with each other or Force Sensitive???? Hello??? Some of Rey’s first students there perhaps?)

Rey jumping toward Finn, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

Despite my feelings toward bendemption, the moment with Han legitimately got me. Ben finally being candid with Han, Han talking to his son frankly, Ben finally accepting Han as his father, and Ben throwing the bled saber into the ocean called back to tlj really nicely and makes that moment hurt a bit less for me now.

(also, it paid off to read Rise of Kylo in this instance--because the lightsaber is the “Ren” he was effectively throwing his title away when he threw that out and that’s also probably how the Knights knew he was gonezo)

Palpatine getting defeated by his own hubris is very very nice. You can’t outfight Palpatine. You’ve got to beat him Ezra-style: by having him underestimate you.

If Kylo had to get redeemed, at this point in his career, redemption through death is a good path for him.

Bye Knights of Ren!

I’ll just be blunt and put the rylo kiss up here. That kiss was nowhere near necessary. A romance with Ben wasn’t pursued after the fact and he died, so it didn’t even fulfill rylo that much, and so now we have a kiss where nobody’s happy. Congrats.

I’m conflicted on Leia dying in order to give save Ben/give Rey the opening to kill him. On one hand, I’m glad she died for the mission, on the other, it put such a weird taste in my mouth that I couldn’t even mourn when she died because I was so conflicted.

I also felt :/ about Rey healing Ben because of my obvious anti-bendemption bias, but also, if we’re going to commit to killing people and Rey fearing her inner darkness, go all the way with it. If she’s trapping herself on ach-to, have it be because she did kill Kylo, finally, and she’s feeling conflicted about it.

I’m usually not one to say that a m/f romance is “making a character straight” because I’m bi and I don’t like that erasure, but Zorri definitely felt like a way to “no-homo” Poe because so many people thought he was gay. It was unnecessary, super straight, and really felt like a bird flip to LGBT+ fans.

Also, Poe being a spice runner both ignores his canon backstory of being a new republic military brat that went into the resistance, but is also just straight-up racist. Thanks for having your latino character be a drug runner, lf.

RIP Hux. Domhnall Gleeson played the part so well and he deserved better. I like the spite direction, both Rian and JJ can stick the fact that they made him comic relief where the sun don’t shine. I like the impunity with which he was killed but he was way neutered. Glad Finn got to shoot him.

They way overused the “did [x] die??? did they not?????” in this movie. It loses its punch after a while. Chewie, Threepio (in terms of memory), Kylo, Kylo again, Rey, and then Kylo for real this time.

I loved Finn being Force Sensitive but they really dropped that thread and kind of ignored it after they introduced Palpatine. If you’re going to introduce him as FS, commit.

Ditto Jannah and the deserted stormtroopers.

okay so i think i liked it more than the last jedi, but like my brother said that wasn’t a very high bar rip

ugh i don’t even know where to start my thoughts are a mess ;adklfjasd

but i guess rey?????? related to palpatine????? definitely saw that as a crack theory a few years ago, would never have thought that they actually would’ve gone with that. i still like the theory of her as a kenobi but whatevs. i kind of liked her saying her name was rey skywalker???? like it’s kind of like oh you can choose who your family is if your actual family is shit or a dictator, but it was still a little um...okay then. i did like how the final shot was like that one shot of luke in a new hope, but it wasn’t exactly natural. like why is rey on tatootine????? is her burying luke and leia’s lightsabers like some sort of memorial/funeral thing????? if so, why didn’t she say smth about how they can rest easy now or smth like ?????? wtf is home girl doing on tatootine

i am. so disappointed. with how finn and poe’s relationship unfolded like i knew they weren’t gonna make them canonically gay but still disappointed. it also felt like part of keri russell’s character’s whole point was to make poe seem straight. like cool we have another female character and we get some of poe’s backstory but was the flirting necessary????? but speaking of poe’s backstory, is it a bit racist to have a man of color playing a (former) drug smuggler??? genuinely asking, i’m white but now that i’m typing this out it doesn’t seem to sit too well

also finn. finn finn finn. why tf couldn’t we have explored his being force sensitive before the last fucking hour of the trilogy????? like in tfa he’s constantly ending up with a lightsaber as a weapon, like that would’ve been great foreshadowing. also what the fuck was he going to tell rey. and why would poe have been upset about it if he wasn’t in love with finn. why would it matter to poe that finn *might* confess his feelings for someone else if he wasn’t in love with finn. and what does finn have to say to rey that he can’t say in front of poe????? that he’s force sensitive???? and he thinks poe’d be mad bc poe was mad rey was spending all her time jedi training instead of being a pilot????? @ abrams i want answers!!!!

i did like the other new girl, jannah i think??? she seems cool, and now i want lando to adopt her pls. also when she shot down that flying thing with just a bow and arrow?? so hot. i love her.

i was not expecting them to do anything more with han, though. like i wonder if they would’ve had leia do that scene with kylo if carrie had still been around. although i must say, when ben was like “dad” and he was struggling to say i love you i guess (ugh men, just fucking say what you mean), and then han was like “i know” :(((((

speaking of leia, i loved her lightsaber design but it was a little weird that they waited until the last fucking movie to mention that she had any jedi training whatsoever. like. really????? it’s just so painfully obvious that whatever plan they came up with when planning the sequel trilogy was not good or detailed

anyways. oscar isaac is hot, women are hot, i would die for leia and carrie fisher, and i’m leaving things there.

What I think Disney & Lucasfilm should do with Star Wars Episode IX...

This was actually a reply to @themandalorianwolf’s post, but because it was so long, I decided to make it its own post.

Here we go...

I don’t honestly think Rian Johnson’s trilogy was a Disney decision.

Here’s how I think things went down:

Things happen months, even a year before things are announced.

Kathleen Kennedy is clearly attached to Rian Johnson and greenlit his trilogy based off the hype some time ago.

Kathleen Kennedy wasn’t checking in on her projects. Remember the Solo problem? Kathleen didn’t even realize how much trouble the production was in till late. My guess is that TLJ controversy of Rian throwing out JJ’s outline went unnoticed until it was way too late or it wasn’t addressed. It was actually only Rian who did that. The original ep 9 director followed JJ’s outline.

Meanwhile Disney realized after the creative conflict between Rian and Colin, the test screenings showing mixed reviews, Rian’s inflated ego and the cast’s low moral, Disney made the choice to hire JJ back in hopes of salvaging their future.

Disney isn’t stupid. They’re one of the riches companies on the planet. They’re willing to play the long game. Disney let Kathleen Kennedy hang herself and now she’s slowly being fazed out. Rian Johnson is going to lose his trilogy. At best his trilogy will be one movie that is pushed back for some time and die there.

Disney is banking on the success of Episode 9 and here’s my guess on what JJ will do Generally:

Luke Skywalker will return. The PR of killing him was a nightmare and it will probably be retconed with a force teleport. JJ has plans for Luke and I doubt there done.

Finnrey will become canon. The only thing that has stayed a constant was the relationship between Finn and Rey.

John Boyega’s increased popularity, the racial backlash, John’s moral being higher, and JJ’s preceded writing style, Finn will be the lead again and more than likely a Jedi since it was foreshadowed.

Ep 9 will be broken into a 2 part movie to finish the saga of the Skywalkers. One movie will work like the Clone Wars while the other part will be the official closer.

Rey Skywalker will more than likely be a thing. It’s the eaist thing to do and let’s Disney bring Daisy Ridley back as the wise Jedi Master in future movies.

Honestly due to Kylo Ren’s popularity, and the First Order in general, I’m not sure if they’ll kill them off indefinitely. More than likely make some of them disappear into the unknown regions.

Leia…I’m not sure. There’s no good way to handle that. Maybe she’ll be made the Chancellor between the time skip to explain her absence.

The Resistance will just merge back into the New Republic and get their allies from independent factions.

The Skywalker saga will end and probably this will be the ending of trilogy based Star Wars films and just movies like the Avengers.

This is gonna be a long post…

I would absolutely 100% love it if they split Episode IX into two parts. Part I in 2019 and Part II in either 2020 or 2021. Why? Because this really might be the only way the sequel trilogy can be properly concluded. There’s WAY too many loose ends and unanswered questions to wrap into one film. They need to take their time with the storyline of Episode IX. I say split into two films, put out Part Iin 2019, surprise us with a Part II announcement and then we’ll wait a year or two to see the official conclusion to the sequel trilogy and possibly the Skywalker Saga as well. And then we’d have 10 movies in the Skywalker Saga instead of 9.

That would be amazing if they brought back Luke, not as a Force Ghost, but alive and well in the flesh. If Jedis are able to teleport themselves as a hologram to other planets, they probably should be able to teleport themselves physically. He just left his robe behind.

FinnRey definitely must be canon!

I repeat - MUST BE CANON!!!

John definitely deserves the spotlight back and I hope JJ can make that happen. Making him Force-sensitive with the potential to become a Jedi would be amazing and I hope we see that as well.

And Finn’s family: If Billy Dee Williams is returning in Episode IX, I honestly think it would be cool if Lando was revealed to be Finn’s father. Then we could get a very emotional, heartwarming father/son reunion and a great setup for Finn’s story in the film.

We could find out that Finn was kidnapped by the First Order when he was a baby and his mother (who was also Force-sensitive) was killed trying to protect him while Lando was too injured to save them and the loss of his son & wife left him traumatized and depressed for years. Hell, maybe Captain Phasma was the one who killed Finn’s mother!

Unless Phasma somehow returns in Episode IX alive and well and more badass than ever, I think Finn would be satisfied to know he avenged his mother’s death without even realizing it. But if Phasma returns though, Finn will be ready for her. Imagine it: A real, totally-badass final battle between Finn and Phasma. Maybe even with an unmasked Phasma. I think that would be extremely awesome.

Rey Skywalker must also be canon.

Luke returning physically would also be good for this reveal. It’d give him a chance to explain to Rey, in the flesh instead of a Force Ghost, about his behavior in The Last Jedi, why he never told her the truth, who her mother was, etc. This would also be a great opportunity for Hayden Christensen to return as the Force Ghost of Anakin Skywalker so that he’s there to defend Luke and help explain the truth to Rey.

This would set up a great new storyline for Luke & Rey in Episode IX and maybe, with all that’s happened, he’ll agree to actually train her. And maybe he’ll train Finn as well.

Something else I’d love to see canon: Kaydel Connix to be revealed as Han & Leia’s daughter and Kylo Ren’s sister

I honestly believe this is the best way possible to pay tribute to Carrie Fisher and keep her legacy going both on-screen and off-screen.

And it also allows Leia’s half of the Skywalker bloodline (as well as Han Solo’s bloodline) to continue through Kaydel while Luke’s half continues through Rey. Luke’s daughter and Leia’s daughter keeping their family’s legacy alive, even if Episode IX marks the end of the Skywalker Saga and we never see that family on the big screen ever again.

I would love it if we found out Kaydel’s real name is Breha Solo and Rey’s is Padme Skywalker. Then Leia would have named her daughter after her adoptive mother and Luke would have named his daughter after his & Leia’s mother. Plus, to me, Ben and Breha Solo sounds fitting together, much like Jaina and Jacen Solo from the Expanded Universe.

I would also really love to see Kaydel take over for her mother as General of the Resistance… or the Reborn Rebellion, whatever they wanna call themselves now.

Maybe she could also find a way to combine her alias with her birthname as a way to honor her parents. Maybe she could call herself Kaydel Solo or Kaydel Connix Solo, make Breha her middle name and then her new full name would be Kaydel Breha Connix Solo.

Also…

PONNIX (Poe x Connix)

Just like Finn & Rey, I love these two characters together and I was happy to see them have some screen-time together in The Last Jedi. And if Kaydel is Han & Leia’s daughter, it makes this romance even more interesting.

Darth Vader tortured Han Solo (in The Empire Strikes Back) and then later he became his son-in-law. So now, Kylo Ren tortured Poe Dameron (in The Force Awakens) and later on, he becomes his brother-in-law. Crazy, isn’t it?

Also, given the relationship between Leia and Poe, it would be very interesting for him to become a part of her family. Her son-in-law.

And eventually, Finn, Rey, Kaydel and Poe will all be a family. Rey and Kaydel could even form a strong sisterly relationship (something I’d love to see happen) and their future children could call them “Aunt Rey”, “Aunt Kaydel”, “Uncle Finn” and “Uncle Poe” (that’d also be easier than calling them cousins like in real life).

Also, since it’s rumored that we’ll see Ewan McGregor reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Episode IX (possibly followed by an Obi-Wan anthology film), maybe we could see… A NEW Kenobi in Episode IX?

This is definitely just excited fan talking, but I think it would be really cool to have a new Kenobi in Episode IX to satisfy those who want Obi-Wan to have a family, who wanna learn more about what he was doing on Tatooine for almost twenty years (other than watching over Luke) and just what his life was like from the very beginning.

Maybe Rey could be both a Skywalker and a Kenobi with her mother & Luke’s wife being Obi-Wan’s daughter. That would definitely explain why Rey is so powerful and make her the granddaughter of two of the greatest and most powerful Jedi Knights ever.

Or maybe Finn could be a Kenobi (for those who have not seen it, I actually have a post about that theory). Yes, believe it or not, not all biracial people have mixed skin colors. Some are darker than others, some are lighter than others. So there is a chance Finn could be Obi-Wan’s grandson and he could still even be Lando’s son. Just reveal that Lando married Obi-Wan’s daughter and they had Finn together.

Plus, we would get to see Obi-Wan’s grandson and Anakin’s granddaughter training together, falling in love with each other, teaming up against Kylo Ren & the First Order together and later marrying each other and having children together - the great-grandchildren of Obi-Wan Kenobi & Anakin Skywalker. And if Finn’s a Calrissian as well, those kids are Luke’s grandchildren through Rey and Lando’s grandchildren through Finn. Crazy, isn’t it?

I’m honestly not counting on a new Kenobi to appear. It really is just excited fan thinking. But I think it would be really cool to have Finn be a Kenobi & Rey a Skywalker or maybe have Rey be both a Skywalker & a Kenobi. That plus Obi-Wan’s potential appearance in Episode IX would be perfect ways to launch and market a Kenobi anthology film possibly coming in the future.

Wow. That was a lot!

And from then on all you’ve done is survive on your own. Growing up in a town away from Hermosa, you never thought you’d leave home. All you did was wait; and wait; and wait – and survive. Rey was born into the world without much more than a whimper, her mother cradling her and sobbing at the birth of her first and only daughter. Rey cried too, different than her mother but still covered her face in tears and snot in a way she never would after her infancy. She was cherished for a moment and then pushed away the next, a child born out of neglect and turned into a pawn for the pity of those around her. Her mother would show the crying child on the streets, trying her best to make money out of the goodness of the hearts of those around her. Many would call her a con artist, but at the very least Rey would never remember her beginnings.

As she grew up into a toddler, Jakku took shape around her. It seemed everywhere the child roamed, she was shown an obstacle to fight her way through. But Jakku was never a place for her. It was only a faded image of a desert town, the tiniest memory in her mind. Her mother left her with a social worker at just two years old, dropping her without her full name and under the cover of the night. From there, life changed drastically.

As her memory faded, images of a city full of sand were replaced with the monotony of life in foster care. Years went on and Rey grew to resent the woman. Her mother stayed in her mind, the only memory Rey had of her was her own screaming and crying as she drove away into the darkness, never to surface again.She hated the woman for it and one day, she said she’d find her again. But as her memories faded, she slowly lost that goal.

Group homes were the places that Rey spent her formative years. Many kids came and went, best friends were made and then adopted and then never heard from again. Rey was left with sense memories of relationships and little trinkets they’d left for her to remember them by. Through it all, Rey never had any families show more than passing interest in adopting her. She was a bruiser, a kid who got into arguments and fights weekly. She never settled down, never truly rested, even when she was asleep. Her most vivid memories of her first ten years are dreams. A constant was her mother, but much of it was mundane. It was life as it should have been given to her, a facade that could have existed, if her mother had wanted her.

Jakku suddenly became a memory too, after some roughhousing turned into a fight and a fight turned into a broken arm for another kid. Hermosa was deemed “the change of pace she needed,” and the group home she was moved into in the city boasted less kids and more room. She was both sad and happy to be the one to exit the desert town, although at the time she thought hard about her parents finally returning, and realized that sometime she was going to have to let go of the Little Orphan Annie fantasy she’d held onto for years.

The dreams stopped the moment she moved to Hermosa, and Rey cleaned up her act in many ways right off the bat. She got interested in many new things, but most notably: cars. She built little models when her caretakers could afford them and over the next three years, her life was notably dull. She went to school, she came back to the home, and she watched the others as they all came and went. She stagnated, sitting like algae on the top of a pond, waiting for a pebble to change her entire world.

It was a cold winter afternoon when a man arrived at the group home, and as he began his cursory walk around the room, Rey eyed him warily. He was not the first person to show interest in adopting her, but he would be the last. He’d return three or four more times before outright asking her if she wanted to be adopted by him. Cool as a cucumber and with sad eyes, he told his story. Of a son he lost and of a daughter he was hoping to find. Rey felt tears in her eyes as he kept talking, and she found that she liked Han Solo far more than the rest of the people who came around, asking about her adoption.

Rey had easily become attached to her future adoptive father. It took forever, but Rey moved out of the group home and into her new house and became a new version of herself once again. She had a bedroom that was just for her, and a puppy named Chewie that followed her everywhere. A normal life was all she asked for all those years, and suddenly she had it all.

As a bonus, Han was excited to teach her how to work on cars and anything else she seemed to be interesting in. For years, she’d been ignored by the adults around her because she never truly needed attention, and now she was fourteen years old and finally learning what it meant to be a part of a family. The next decade was peaceful, and Rey graduated high school and college in a timely fashion, taking her spot as a senior technician at Solo Automotive like she’d planned since the day she was adopted. But things would take a turn quickly just two weeks after she turned twenty-six, and Rey’s life would change forever.

Everything was great that afternoon, Rey returning to her home and finding the place too quiet, other than Chewie’s whining from his carrier. Han was never quiet when he was home, and Rey felt a sense of unease wash over her as she walked through the home. She found his lifeless body on the floor upstairs, and the numbness overtook her. She doesn’t remember calling the police or riding to the hospital with them, just the moments of bad news given to her and Poe Dameron picking her up in his car with fresh clothes. Funny, she hadn’t even realized she had blood stains on her outfit until he’d mentioned it.

The funeral came and went with fanfare from the city of Hermosa. Han was a valued member of the community, even if he was known for his rude nature. She stood dressed in black and lowered the man who she’d known as her father into the ground. People around her gave sad smiles and well wishes, but nothing seemed to help in the long run. She felt numb since the moment she found his bloodied body on the floor.

The house was just as silent when she returned to a house that she may not even own any longer, and had to host the reading of Han’s will. His estranged wife arrived, and as kind as she was, Rey got no comfort from her. They were apart for a reason, and Han starting over with another child seemed to bother her more than she let on. When the words were read out, that he’d left everything to Rey, except a lock box which Leia took with tears in her eyes, and she found herself inconsolable. She owned the life she lived now, and Han truly loved him more than her real parents ever could have. She had survived everything that had gotten her to this point, and she’d keep surviving no matter what, she promised herself. Han would want her to survive.

It took time, but now Rey owns Solo Automotive and works as hard as she possibly can to keep the business successful. She takes care of the house left to her and Chewie, cares for everything Han used to and makes sure that nothing is out of place. It’s meticulous, but she hides a secret well: the unsolved murder of the only father she’s ever known bothers her at every moment that she never got justice for him. So her plan now is to find the killer and bring them in, even if the Hermosa police won’t do their part, she will. All because her sense of right and wrong is so strong that she’d never be able to ignore the nagging feeling in her bones.

Even as she whispers theories into the night sky with Finn and Poe at her side, she knows that things were never going to make sense. Something innate in her says that all of this is… futile, somehow. Poe feels it too, she knows. And as she looks at the too blue sky, she thinks she sees something that’s… wrong. Up there. How could a world where horrible things happen be right? Those feelings are like things going bump in the night to the Creator. They’re a sentiment just a little too close to the truth, and the Creator thinks somehow something may have to change in her attitude if she wants to keep existing for much longer.

So, to preface, this is sort of my own thoughts on the antis. I am possibly wrong, because people might dislike something for no reason (yes, that happens). The other thing is, that this is not assuming everyone is like this. I’m also not in a huge mood to do formal language, and am not going to edit this too much - so, apologies for any and all mistakes I may make.

So, before I get right into what goes through these peoples’ minds, a story. This is quite long winded (like 1,000 words all up).

So, here we go.

This particular story is of when I first joined Tumblr. I was probably thirteen or fourteen at the time (the blog is 4 years old, I think). I didn’t join many fandoms at that point, except for one. Naruto. For a long time, I was watching and reading both the anime and the manga (although it became only the manga - due to the bias the anime studio showed particular characters, but that’s another story for another time). I joined because of the interest I had in a ship - SasuSaku (Sasuke and Sakura). I will be referring to them mostly as SS, because I’m lazy. The ship itself involved a boy/teenager with a tortured and dark past, and a girl with a sort of easier life. Basically ying and yang, y’know. I’m really into that; shipping dark characters with literal rays of sunshine. I found that’s my sort of preference as I got further into other fandoms. One in particular is a sort of guilty pleasure, which you might see me reblog if you follow me… Anyways. Naruto is the story of these ninja who train to become stronger. Sasuke wants revenge. See, his brother slaughtered all of his family in one night, leaving only him. Throughout the original series, this is something that is swept to the side, mostly. Until the end. Sasuke decides to leave the village, as he feels he is not becoming powerful enough to exact revenge. Guess who meets him? Sakura. For whatever reason, she sensed he was leaving the village - and she was the last one to see him that night. After she tearfully states that she loves him, he knocks her out with the words “thank you”. Those particular words are important. As are the “even after all this time, you’re still annoying” (kinda like the “you’re nothing, but not to me”). Skip forward a few years, and Sasuke has changed. A lot. In the beginning of the sequel, he refused to kill people (unless they had to do with his revenge). By the middle, he was killing people easily. Like he didn’t care. That’s because he didn’t. He had found out the truth, and was wanting vengeance against his own village and everyone in it.

It gets to the point where he becomes an international criminal. He attacks the Kage summit (basically where all the leaders of the lands meet to discuss important topics), and starts a world war. Near the end of this arc, Sakura meets up with him - she says she wants to join him, and he challenges her on that fact. Telling her to kill someone. She hesitates, and he uses her hesitation to turn on her. She is saved by their teacher. She has another chance to kill Sasuke, but once more hesitates - thinking back onto his words from that night. The thank you. She couldn’t do it. She just… couldn’t. And he nearly kills her, much to everyone’s shock. Even Kakashi mentions that he has fallen so far - because he tried to kill Sakura.

The end of their story is well. She tearfully confesses to him again, and he says that she’s annoying again. He casts an illusion on her, and she falls ‘asleep’ for a while, so Sasuke and Naruto can fight it out. She wakes up, and heads to where the boys are and begins healing them. Sasuke ends up apologising, and he seems unsure for a moment before he relaxes. Later on, once he has healed, he goes on to start his redemption - she asks if she can go with him, which he politely says no to. He ends up thanking her again, and telling her he will see her again - which he obviously does, considering they end up conceiving a child.

So where am I going with this story? Well, you see, I still remember from ages ago the amount of cross tagging in the pro tag and the amount of filth thrown from the antis. We were called all sorts of things - homophobic (as the ship got in the way of a gay pairing) & abuse apologists (due to Sasuke trying to kill Sakura and vice versa).

The same argument is here, particularly with teh latter - they are enemies. Of course they will fight each-other. It’s the same for TFA and TLJ. Kylo Ren and Rey are enemies. Antis seem to use SJW fights, that don’t even really mean anything in the context they are using. Antis, as a whole, bring real world problems to fictional universes. Many relationships I ship, I would condone if they were real life relationships. Fiction though? What does it matter. Most stories end with a good ending, in terms of everyone being happy - a part from the enemy. Many people also thought Sasuke would die at the end of Naruto, yet did he? No. He is still a crucial part, even with the next generation. It will be the same with Kylo Ren, although I hope JJ Abrams ties it up a lot better than Kishimoto does.

Basically, what my entire point is - is that most antis adopt a SJW sort of stance on things. Using real life arguments to make themselves look like they have the moral high ground.

Yet, when it comes to the actual real life issues they seem to turn a blind eye. We see it with Rey, that she deserves Finn (although love is literally never about deserving?), and these same people will trample on Rose - a woman of colour. Abuse is a whole other thing again, thee same people will go around shouting abuse, even though Kylo Ren and Rey are enemies? Of course they are going to hurt each-other! Many shippers have also stated that their relationship, at this exact point, is unhealthy. That they want to see the characters ready for a healthy relationship. Finally, with the homophobia argument, it usually always has to do with a female character getting in the way of two male characters. Nearly all the time, the female character is heavily degraded and thrown under a bus. Treated like trash. It seems to be like this for most fandoms, and it is disgusting behaviour - fujoshis, we call them in the Naruto fandom. They go to such huge lengths to show that their ship is superior, sending death threats and asking others to commit suicide.

I know this is a bit sloppy, but it’s just my two cents on the fandom as a whole - in terms of the antis. I mean, the antis who keep to themselves are the real MVPs. They don’t go around attacking others, just politely stating they disagree. Then nothing else comes of it. Maybe discussions. Honestly, we shouldn’t think of all Annes as being the same (which I know we don’t), but it’s still interesting to see peoples’ individual personalities shine.

So, TLJ

I was going to wait until I saw it again, but ... ehhh let’s get this done. God this post is gonna be long. I’m gonna miss stuff.

I have 6 main gripes with this movie and I want to get those out of the way first.

That should have been Anakin, not that shitty-ass space frog. Fuck Yoda.

The codebreaker Maz sent them for should have been Lando, and “we didn’t have time for Lando” is still nonsense.

Rian, that is a bladderbuster of a movie, we did not need the milking scene, pal.

Also Joss Whedon gets tiresome, let’s dial back the jokes per second yeah? SW is tonally different from Avengers, let’s not make them all samey same.

Why was there no mourning for Han that was visible instead of only learned through “The Art of TLJ” (Leia’s hairstyle was Alderaanian mourning braids.)

... MOAR PHASMA, are you for real with this 0.3 seconds nonsense.

Now, I was so incredibly underwhelmed by TFA (I have literally never watched it since I saw it in theaters one time per my obligation as a Star Wars fan, I felt like JJ Abrams didn’t even care enough to make an original movie) that I wasn’t jazzed about TLJ.

I was very, very, very wrong in that. Holy fuckballs was I ever fucking wrong.

Luke

The flashback trio, holy SHIT. The sanitized, Obi-Wan’d version. Kylo’s “Bilbo seeing the ring” scary-ass wrong version. And finally, Luke’s “I fucked up so so much” version. Luke has always struggled with the Dark Side, with his anger. You see it at the end of RotJ where he’s just hammering on Vader, until he goes a step too far and goes “oh my god what am I doing.” And then you find out that he bought his own hype, and the Order’s own hype, and drifted close to the Dark Side again, thanks to past trauma from dealing with Vader and his own established tendency to come close to the dark.

But he regrets it so so much. Mark’s monologue talking about that, where you can hear the pain and regret and guilt in his voice, it’s some of his best acting. Luke, driven by shame over what he almost did, driven by survivor guilt, ends up in a very dark place. Shame and guilt are real fucking beasties, and feeling that you failed your students, your nephew, your best friend, your sister, and the galaxy? Jesus. It makes my heart hurt just thinking about it.

And then finally, someone with the same kind of optimism he used to have shows up, a real genuine Rey of Sunshine as it were. And she does exactly what he did with Vader. She tries, even though she has less of a dog in this fight than he does, and it’s just .... i love it, guys.

That force projection. GodDAMN. Even Threepio can see him! HOLY SHIT.

The mirroring of his sacrifice, buying our heroes time, of Obi-Wan’s, was so poignant.

I cried like a baby all through the scene with him and Carrie. It was so good.

And then his scene with Kylo, with this man who’s just devoured by anger and feelings of inadequacy and this desperate need to prove himself to a shitty-ass authority figure (Snoke). It was excellent.

Basically A+ all around, gave Luke nuance and a real depth of character that I wasn’t expecting but I loved after I’d really sat and ruminated on it. He’s always been so positive, and things worked out for him (mostly), and this failure (and there’s the theme of the movie, how you handle failure) just walloped him upside the head and it felt so very, very real to me. <3

I also cried when his robes blew off that rock on Ahch-To. (I cried a lot in this movie lmao)

“Where’s Han?” (me: “fuck me i’m crying a lot.”)

Leia

SPACE MOM OMG <3

Look even if i’d hated the rest of this movie, I was going for Space Mom.

She’s so tired of fighting. She’s so tired of losing that which she loves most. She’s so ready to just sit down and rest. But she won’t, because Leia is the most resilient, and so stubborn and determined and fierce and amazing. Even getting shot into goddamn space isn’t going to stop her.

LEIA USING THE FORCE AND BY GOD SHE HAS SO MUCH STRENGTH IN IT because she’s so very much also Anakin’s kid. <3

Leia being so done with Poe’s nonsense. She’s not going to keep seeing these wholesale sacrifices. Winning doesn’t matter if you don’t have anyone left. The Resistance is not cannon fodder. They are not the First Order, and their people matter.

Every single scene with Leia I loved. All of them.

The hurt, and the pain, and the resignation in her voice when she says her son is gone, it broke my heart guys. You can tell she isn’t happy about it. You can tell she didn’t arrive at this decision lightly. Letting go of a family member who’s determined to pursue something destructive is hard as fuck. I’ve seen it happen in my own family. Leia has lost so, so much. Her planet, her parents, her adoptive parents, her husband, her son, and now she knows she’s losing Luke too? I just ... my heart.

Leia and Rey at the end! <3 Loved it.

the goddamn tribute before the credits, yep cried there too.

Rey

God I love Rey.

Zero time for Kyle Ron’s nonsense.

Her strength of character, her mirroring of Luke’s attempt at redemption, her positioning as light to dark, her “fine fuck you I’m leaving” when redemption is rejected, I love everything about Rey.

The introduction to Poe

Did I mention I love Rey? I love Rey. Rey is so driven and determined and amazing. <3 She has no time for an old-ass man’s nonsense. She has no time for a gold bathrobe wearing man’s nonsense. She has no time for Kyle Ron’s nonsense. “Look I have shit to get done so lead, follow, or get the fuck out of my way.” When Luke wouldn’t stand up (because he’s still fighting his own personal demons), she goes “fine, I’ll do it myself.” When Kyle Ron wouldn’t actually burn down the past, she goes, “fine, I have things to do.”

Rey is the Actual Best.

Rey uses her anger! Holy shit I love that.

Kylo Ren

Look I have to give massive props to Adam Driver. The way he plays someone who’s been emotionally abused, fuck, that shit was giving me flashbacks to my own life. (snoke reminds me of my mom lmao my childhood was great.)

Unlike TFA, I actually found him compelling as a character this time.

That scene in the elevator actually sort of hurt my heart a little. “Okay, FINE. You don’t think I’m anything? You think I don’t deserve this? THEN I’LL FUCKING SHOW YOU, I’LL DO IT WITHOUT IT, I’LL BE BETTER THAN YOU EVER EXPECTED” and the unspoken “and then you’ll finally accept me”. I got a little choked up, thanks past trauma.

God I remember trying for decades to get my mom to love me, to say something nice that she meant, to just pretend she liked me. You agree with horrible shit, you feel beat down all the time, all trying to make this truly awful person think you’re somebody.

So I understand part of Kylo Ren’s drive, tbh.

But he still chose the Space Nazis TWICE. And threw off the love of his family and his uncle. So fuck that jackass.

Look, my mom left literal scars on my face, and i didn’t burn down my school, murder the students, and go join the Hitler Youth.

He’s the embodiment of “prior trauma does not excuse current actions”

A+ to Adam Driver for playing a character I can go “oh man that sucks, but I would still space your ass in half a second you shitty-ass human being.”

Finn

I love Finn so so so much and I could watch a whole movie just about Finn and Rose and Rey and Poe just ... generally wrecking rich people’s shit around the galaxy ngl.

I wish the fight with Phasma was longer. That was a bit of a letdown.

But Finn is just perfect. I love him.

Can we talk about how he looked like an Actual Disney Prince running over to make sure Rose was okay? Because he did and I loved it.

Also how he was totally prepared to give his life to save the Resistance because he has something to fight for, and I wasn’t SUPER sure he was going to be stopped and my heart was in my throat that whole time because Finn you fucking precious human being you. <3

THE REUNION oh my god 12 seconds of sublime perfection. THEY WERE SO HAPPY. (i cried. but i bet you knew that already lmao)

Rose

Cute, takes no shit, period. Love her. Awkward and adorable and just fantastic.

She felt very reminiscent of Cassian with her “I’ve been fighting this my whole life” stance, and I loved it.

Little acts of kindness can have huge rippling effects on the universe. <3

I can’t wait to see more of her.

Watching her and Finn totally fucking up rich people’s days, goddamn that was satisfying as fuck.

I liked the kiss. It was pretty clear she was crushing on Finn the whole time (well maybe not to Finn lmao), it wasn’t drawn out. It didn’t make anything canon, and while I may be all about Finnrey and get more of a brotp vibe from Finnrose, I certainly wouldn’t be mad if it ends up going that way. I thought it was cute. “Fuck it, i’m gonna do it before i pass out.”

Poe

Poe getting schooled by two older, more experienced women, A+.

Poe reminded me of Saw Guerrera, actually, speaking of Rogue One parallels. He wants to win, no matter the cost. Let’s remember that Saw ended up leaving the main body of the Rebellion over this.

I thought Poe’s arc was great, tbh. He learned that you have to be able to ADAPT.

I’m still personally “eh” on not disclosing anything, but at the same time, even if Holdo had told him at least a general idea of what was going on, I think he still would have sent Rose and Finn, he still would have staged the mutiny. His entire thing is “i know better” when he doesn’t, and he learns that he certainly does not always know better. There was a LOT of character growth there, and I loved it. So much of this movie adds depth to characters. <3

That intro to Rey! I loved it so much.

POE AND BB8, enough said, god they were cute. THEY HAD A FOREHEAD TOUCH. <3

General things I really liked

that scene where Holdo jumps into the ship. utter silence, light spilling forth from a source of darkness, GODDAMN that shit gave me chills. Amazing.

The aesthetics, as always. Star Wars movies are just beautiful.
