Fiona Apple and Lorde are not on social media. It's awesome how they don't need an instagram account to sell well.

I know isn't that amazing? Fiona releases albums every 8 to 10 years and the albums always sell well. I don't blame her from staying away from social media. Lorde has instagram but she leaves it blank. She uses newsletters to talk with fans and to promote her music. Lana is trying to do what Lorde does with the newsletter thing. Let's see how it goes. How many times has she closed down her Honeymoon instagram account just to bring it back a week later? The answer is many times. She still holds her Lanadelrey instagram account but she has it disabled. That one had 25 million followers. In true Lana fashion the newsletter thing isn't going to happen. She'll do it once or twice then go back to her Honeymoon account. She battles with her social media rarely posts about her work. If Lana is going to be that way, she might as well do what Fiona does and have fans update other fans on her career like @fionaapplerocks does. Lorde does it right too and sticks to her newsletter thing. I swear I can picture Lana promoting Nikki or her friends baby showers in her newsletters. 🫠

Fiona addressed the "poster girl for rape" thing on a fan club forum back in 1997 (& like, just for some extra context for her situation, she was just 19 at the time & having to navigate the deeply misogynistic, leering press). She wrote, "I do not think of Tori Amos as the 'poster girl for rape'- I was merely referring to the danger in both of us being honest about our personal experience, when, as public figures, there is a tendency of the media to label us and reduce our music to simply a reflection of one cultural ill." @fionaapplerocks Supposedly there’s an interview with Fiona Apple, in New York Magazine, where she said: “Everybody acts like I'm nuts. I'm not nuts, I just want to feel it all.” but I can’t seem to find this actual quote anywhere. It appears to be a misquote from someone named Hannah from “Girls” who may have been paraphrasing, referring to a June 17, 2012 Vulture article titled “‘I Just Want to Feel Everything’: Hiding Out With Fiona Apple, Musical Hermit.” I’m hoping someone can clarify this.

Things I didn't expect to happen when listening to Fiona Apple's break-up piano ballad "Not About Love": that I would be headbanging. But at the end of the first verse, when the tempo slows, the suspense builds and those glorious piano chords crash down. I was also crashing my hands down on my desk. Fuck!

One of my favourite things about Fiona Apple is that she uses the piano as a rhythmic instrument. Watch her smack the keys when she plays the song live. That's not the proper playing technique! In fact, the technique is more reminiscent of hitting a drum. And that's what the piano on her songs often feel like; an instrument being used as percussion that has the "minor" side effect of adding melody.

There's a gorgeous section post-chorus when the notes rain down with the same rhythm as a drum fill. It sounds like she is running down a hill, barely holding her balance. This feeling of unevenness pervades the song, from its frequent tempo changes to Fiona's vocal performance, which switches between tender and ragged, often within the same line.

Most satisfyingly, the music reflects the songwriting. It's a breakup song, the morning after an argument, and Fiona seems to be pointing the finger squarely at her verbally abusive man ("Changed the name of the game cause he lost it / he knew it was wrong but he knew it too late").

But she is an unreliable narrator, and when she tenderly sings "I miss that stupid ache" just two lines after forcefully asserting "I am not in love" the story turns complicated. By "missing" the toxic relationship, does she hold herself partly responsible for its failure? Did she try to force something that would never work, just for the thrill of the honeymoon phase?

And that's the best thing about this song. It isn't a revenge breakup song, but a human one. One where Fiona reckons through a failed relationship by looking at the flaws in herself as well as the other party. And it just so happens, that it is also a complete banger.
