THE HOOD OF CROTHRAINNE
"Gold is its woof, silver underneath it, soft to the skin is its lining; you will be hound, man, or deer, as you turn it, as you change it." - A Rí Richid, Réidig Dam
The 12th Century poet Gilla in Chomded húa Cormaic is credited as the author of a poem known as A Rí Richid, Réidig Dam, which contains an episode involving the exploits of Fionn Mac Cumhaill and the Fianna. At the end of this episode, we are told of Fionn's most marvellous possession: the magical Hood of Crothrainne, a woven mantle fashioned in the Land of Promise that can change the wearer's shape. Any tales of Fionn using this power have been lost, but the significance of both hounds and deer to the Fenian cycle remains an ever-present motif.

I haven’t posted about this yet, but after my partner and I got Married earlier this month, we brought home a kitten. His name is Fionn (Fionn Mac Cumhaill, leader of the Fianna) and he is the most rambunctious lad we have ever encountered. Here are some pictures!

Hey! So I read some very nerdy stuff, mainly Fairytales, folklore, myths, legends, that kind of stuff and I have decided to make a bookclub on Fable for that!
Right now I am reading The Green Hero and am using the bookclub to take notes and write my thoughts about each story, but if anyone would like to join I would be absolutely delighted!
Some other stuff I plan on reading in the future (on this very nerdy bookclub specifically) would be The Merry Adventures of Robinhood and Laboulaye's Fairy Book, among many others.
So if that sounds like something you might find interesting feel free to stop by! Whether it is just to read my notes, or to join in and converse!

Shadow and seer-Fionn-Elriel
Hofas spoilers
This is just a speculation but in hofas Silene gave this information.
My mother eventually trusted only Helena and myself to seek the truth. She knew we could be of great use to her, because we bore the shadows as well as starlight.
Helena and Silene both have shadow and starlight power.
Theia= starborn
So they got the starlight power from Theia. They must have gotten their shadow power from Fionn then? Bc he is their father.
So this made me think...in mythology fionn is a seer.
Fionn mac Cumhaill often anglicized Finn McCool or MacCool, is a hero in Irish mythology, as well as in later Scottish and Manx folklore. He is the leader of the Fianna bands of young roving hunter-warriors, as well as being a seer and poet. He is said to have a magic thumb that bestows him with great wisdom. He is often depicted hunting with his hounds Bran and Sceólang, and fighting with his spear and sword. The tales of Fionn and his fiann form the Fianna Cycle or Fenian Cycle (an Fhiannaíocht), much of it narrated by Fionn's son, the poet Oisín.
So what if...fionn in acotar was also a seer? What if that's how elain and azriel are also connected?
Bc that would mean...
Fionn: a seer and shadow powers
Elain: a seer
Azriel: shadowsinger
Is that how they are connected? Is that how elain could use the tt? 👀👀
Bc we know tt and gwydion are twin to each other. And Gwydion was Fionn's sword. Tt was his friend's—Enalius.
And in acowar elain used tt. Maybe bc that's the reason why. Maybe being a seer has some kind of connection to it. Just like being a starborn is connected to wielding the gwydion and its powers.
But as a black blade broke through the king’s throat, spraying blood, I realized someone else had. Elain stepped out of a shadow behind him, and rammed Truth-Teller to the hilt through the back of the king’s neck as she snarled in his ear, “Don’t you touch my sister.”
And we know from Bryce that knife has some kind of shadow powers.
Bryce threw her power into the Starsword, light ripping through the black blade, willing it to tear this fucking monster apart—She willed it into Truth-Teller, and shadows flowed—
So that's all.

So, something i recently learned about SMT4A is that Doi got SERIOUSLY fucked over by Hashino certain higher ups on the game's design team, with the best examples being the human characters
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and now I'm REALLY wondering just how much of his designs that I've seen people hate on for almost a decade are really even his fault to begin with, especially when both SMT4A and SMTV have proven he's capable of some absolute bangers (Idunn, new Odin, Krishna, Fionn McCool, etc)

So, i have been studying a lot of Celtic Mythology lately...
Specifically Irish Mythology, by the works of Charles Squire, specifically.
And learning about the Thuatha De Dannan, and the war against the Fomorians was a blast for most of the time. Lugh is really bad ass and Dagda is such a goofer. My favorite part of his myth, is that part when he gets a comically large spoon and drinks a lot of soup. Yeah, i am not making this up...
This kinda made me apreciate more of the Doi designs for Apocalypse. I preffer Beta Dagda, but i came to apreciate the current design a lot more. Dannu is great in both her beta and current design, while others like Nuanda and Ogma are comically stuck to Demi kids, and Brigit weirdly did not received a redesign along with Dagda and Danu for Apocalypse, even if she is his daughter and very important to his character as a whole, in irish Mythology.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beta Dagda and current Dagda.
You can see that clearly they suffered the same design idea as Odin, trying to make it look more like a ''marvel'' hero, if that makes any sense. Like, they try to mix a clearly humanoid and familiar figure with artificial and mechanical traits. Personally, i like this! But i often thought that Doi's Dagda went too much on this route, while it looks cool, it ends up not looking much as the myth depicts.
Danu is another thing entirely. It is funny how scholars are not even sure if there was a goddess called Danu, and theorize she was created in latest centuries by christian scholars. Danu wa supposed to be a motherly goddess for the Irish Pantheon, the one who gave birth to their group: The Tuatha De Dannan. In reality, Danu was most likely proposed later, when they were trying to make sense of the name Tuatha De Dannan, which they explained that it meant they were the ''People of the Goddess Danu''.
Of course, this is debated to this day. And if you read the myths (like i have been doing for a while) you will notice that Danu is absent even in big moments, as the war against the Fomorians or the arrival of humans in Ireland. It really felt as if she was just there, inserted. But anyways, both of her beta design and Doi current's design are great. Although in this case, i am more inclined to her Beta design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brigit, Dagda's daughter did not received a Doi redesign for the new game, and seemed to serve no role in the end product. However, she does have a side quest in SMT IV, where Flynn and gang helps her to get her father's signature Cauldron, to help and revive Danu and the Thuata the Dannan. Which actually happens in the sequel, Apocalypse where those really appears.
Brigit is a fire goddess, but also of other things which i am lazy to explain now, but i gotta say i really enjoy her Kaneko original design!
Tumblr media
I will probably come back to talk how Dagda's wife ended up creating the perfect storm to birth Fionn McCool as a hero, or how Lugh ascended to the throne of the Tuatha De Dannan, but for now i gotta say that Irish Mythology is very rich and interesting and i am glad authors like John Rhys and Charles Squire worked hard to make their legacy alive today!

February 17th 1796 saw the death of poet James MacPherson.
MacPherson is mainly known as the "translator" of the Ossian cycle of poems, he was born at Ruthven in the parish of Kingussie, Badenoch, Inverness-shire and educated at King's College, Aberdeen.
Macpherson presented the Ossian poems as authentic translations of an original oral work by a legendary Gaelic bard, Ossian. They turned out to be hugely influential -inspiring artists, composers and writers. The poems evoked a coherent, mythic world, equivalent to the classical legends and characters of Homer. However, controversy soon followed, with detractors claiming that Macpherson had written the works himself. It is now believed he used existing Gaelic ballads, adding themes and references from other sources.
His first book of poems, The Highlander in 1758, was no a success but after collecting Gaelic manuscripts and having orally transmitted Gaelic poems transcribed with the encouragement of the poet John Home and the financial support of Edinburgh Minister and author he published the English-language text "Fragments of ancient poetry", collected in the Highlands of Scotland. The next year he started publishing the Ossian poems.
So who was Ossian? He was a legendary Irish Bard who is said to be the son of Finn or Fionn mac Cumhaill, anglicised to Finn McCool.
Macphersons poems were a massive success, admirers and people who took inspiration are like a who's who, Samuel Johnson, William Wordsworth, Napoleon and Diderot were great admirers, and Voltaire wrote parodies of them. Thomas Jefferson thought Ossian "the greatest Poet that has ever existed"
In his later years he bought an estate, to which he gave the name Belville or Balavil, in his native Inverness-shire, where he died at the age of 59. Macpherson's remains were carried from Scotland to Westminster Abbey.
Whether or not The Ossian poems were genuine or not we will never know but they are hailed as classics in their own right.

Lmao ask and you shall receive 🖋️📚🍲 for you and Shinsou :)
🖋️: Have you tried learning another language because of your f/o? Did you stick to it after the initial idea?
Me: I've learned a few random words in Japanese, but I keep tripping over the pronunciation. Let's see... I know how to say "die", "idiot", "itadakimasu", "fuck", "shit", "bitch", and "I love you".
Shinsou: Why am I not surprised that you learned all the curse words first?
Me: Because you like antagonizing Bakugou, and that guy is LOUD when he's mad... which is all the time. Anyway, I'm kinda slow at languages (my middle school French teacher and my high school Italian teacher can confirm), but I'm working on it, I promise.
Shinsou: You could just download one of those language apps like Duolingo.
Me: I refuse to interact with that homicidal green owl.
Shinsou: ...what?
📚: Are there any folk tales / local legends that you've told your f/o about?
Me: Okay, so I don't really have much in the way of "local legends" unless you count cryptids like Mothman or the Jersey Devil, but I do know I'm some flavor of North European (AKA White As Fuck), so I know a lot about medieval English and Irish legends like King Arthur, Fionn Mac Cumhaill (pronounced "Finn McCool", which I love), Bonny Janet, Robin Hood, etcetera . Oh, and I know a fuck ton of Norse myths.
Shinsou: Nerd.
Me: Your nerd.
*⚡⚡⚡*
Shinsou: I don't actually know many local legends or myths, other than a handful of yokai. Tengus, kitsunes, kappas, tanuki, that kind of thing.
Me: I know one myth about the sun goddess Amaterasu hiding in a cave after her brother Susanoo threw a horse into her weaving hall and getting lured out by a striptease from the dawn goddess Ame-No-Uzume-No-Mikoto, and then one about how Susanoo was exiled and then found the legendary sword Kusanagi No Tsurugi.
Shinsou: Grass-Cutter?
Me: it's a lot more epic than it sounds, trust me.
🍲: Let's talk food! Are there any culturally-unique dishes you've tried making for your f/o? Are there any they've made for you?
Shinsou: I've made chili for Sparky a few times after he's had a bad day at work, since it's his favorite.
Me: He's getting a lot better than when he first tried.
Shinsou: Hey, I hadn't ever heard of chili before you made it for me. Give me a break, kitty.
Me: You forgot the CHILI POWDER. The thing that gives chili it's NAME. You forgot that.
Shinsou: And you've burnt water. What's your point?
Me: For the love of- That was ONE TIME!
*⚡⚡⚡*
Me: I've tried my hand at mochi a few times. I think they turned out pretty good! I've also made yakitori before, since that's basically just putting some chicken on a stick and grilling it.
Shinsou: Not bad for someone who's burnt water before.
Me: IT WAS ONE TIME!
Shinsou: Still not sure how you managed to do that.
Me: Oh, and I've made ramen, but everyone and their mother knows how to make ramen.
Shinsou: Putting a plastic container in the microwave and pushing a few buttons doesn't count as "making ramen".

More info under the cut!
Gráinne O'Malley (Irish):
She was The Pirate Queen!!!! Took over her father's boating fleet and was super wealthy and incredible. Her son's got captured by the British and she went single handedly to get them back, having a conversation with the queen at the time and won them back!!! Led a hardy seafaring life and bet many men in duels, a force of nature against the British!!
Fionn Mac Cumhaill (Irish):
He's the leader of the Fianna, a troop of roving warriors that slumber in a cave until they are needed most. He also has a magic thumb. He and an old man were fishing for the salmon of wisdom and he accidentally touched its burning flesh. He can only access the wisdom when he sucks on his thumb and recites some incantation. For all of his coolness (get it?) he's also a dumbass. Fionn isn't his real name, it's just a nickname he was given when his hair turned prematurely white (or it could be interpreted as calling someone 'blondie' which is a little funnier). He's distantly decended from Núadu, king of the gods. He was raised in the woods and no-one knew who he was. His wife was turned into a deer not once, but twice. His son is a poet and also a fierce warrior.

For all the marbles, I’m gonna go ahead and guess that Pixie (which is a British mythological creature) is the alias of Fionnmak, who is based on Fionn mac Cumhaill, aka Finn McCool, an Irish mythological figure. Did I get it right?
A good theory, but also Queen Mab is right there too.

Rockall is an uninhabitable granite islet situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, 300km west of Soay (Scotland) and 700km south of Iceland; it and the nearby skerries of Hasselwood Rock and Helen's Reef are the only emergent parts of the Rockall Plateau. The rock was formed by magmatism as part of the North Atlantic Igneous Province during the Paleogene.
The origin and meaning of the islet's name Rockall is uncertain. The Scottish Gaelic name for the islet, Ròcal, may derive from an Old Norse name that may contain the element fjall, meaning 'mountain'. It has also been suggested that the name is from the Norse *rok, meaning 'foaming sea', and kollr, meaning 'bald head'—a word which appears in other placenames in Scandinavian-speaking areas. Another idea is that it derives from the Gaelic Sgeir Rocail, meaning 'skerry of roaring' or 'sea rock of roaring', although rocail can also be translated as 'tearing' or 'ripping'.
The Dutch mapmakers Petrus Plancius and C. Claesz show an island called Rookol northwest of Ireland on their Map of New France and the Northern Atlantic Ocean (Amsterdam, c. 1594). The first literary reference to the island, which is called Rokol, is found in Martin Martin's A Description of the Western Isles of Scotland, published in 1703. This book gives an account of a voyage to the archipelago of St Kilda, and Martin states: "... and from it lies Rokol, a small rock sixty leagues to the westward of St Kilda; the inhabitants of this place call it Rokabarra."
The name Rocabarraigh is also used in Scottish Gaelic folklore for a mythical rock which is supposed to appear three times, its last appearance being at the end of the world: "Nuair a thig Rocabarra ris, is dual gun tèid an Saoghal a sgrios" ('When Rocabarra returns, the world will likely come to be destroyed').
Rockall's name has also been used in Irish mythology; one story describes how legendary giant Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn McCool) scooped up a chunk of Ireland to fling at a Scottish rival. It instead missed and landed in the Irish Sea – the pebble left behind formed Rockall, while the clump became the Isle of Man and the void left behind filled with water and eventually became Lough Neagh.
