I rewatched The Avatar and the Fire Lord a few days ago, and god, what a good episode. Revealing that Zuko is a descendant of both Sozin and Roku was a genius move (and that's not even getting into the Zuko/Aang parallels of it all). But there's something the show doesn't seem to think of, and that I haven't seen anyone in the fandom discuss either — the fact that Zuko isn't the only one descendant from both these men. Azula is, too.
The conclusion of this story that Iroh presents to Zuko at the end of the episode is that he alone — because of his lineage from both men the war was started from — is uniquely capable of cleansing the sins of his family and the fire nation and bringing peace to the world. But, the thing is, there's two sides of this conflict, and therefor two sides to its legacy. The external and the personal. The legacy of the external is the war, but the legacy of the personal is the sibling rivalries that kept repeating through generations of the royal family.
Though Roku and Sozin were not actually related, they were childhood friends as close as siblings and fucking shared a birthday, so the symbolism works. We know very little about Azulon's childhood or if he even had any direct sibling rivalries like this at all, but from what I can find on his wiki page, we know that Sozin favoured him over "other family" (I'm assuming his siblings). What we know very well, however, is what happened in the next generation between Iroh and Ozai. We know Azulon favoured Iroh over Ozai, and that this likely is the initial source of their hatred for each other, which resulted in perhaps the worst sibling rivalry of them all (what with the indirect patricide and throne stealing).
Then we go on to Zuko and Azula, whose upbringing kept going in the same patterns, but the key difference is them being the first ones to both be descendant from the men who started it all. If Zuko having this lineage makes him uniquely capable of ending the cycle of war in his country and restoring balance to the world, shouldn't that mean that both he and Azula having this lineage makes them uniquely capable of ending the cycle of brutal sibling rivalries and restoring balance to their family?
This conclusion I've presented seems to fit perfectly with the lesson Aang draws from the same story as well:
"Roku was just as much Fire Nation as Sozin was, right? If anything, their story proves that anyone's capable of great good and great evil. Everyone, even the Fire Lord and the Fire Nation, have to be treated like they're worth giving a chance."
I know this is supposed to be foreshadowing to Aang refusing to kill Ozai later, but I can't help but think it's even more applicable to fourteen year old Azula. It's really so ironic that the show runners thought Azula deserved what she got when their own show seems to be telling them that Zuko mending his relationship with her is what he ultimately should've done.
But, then again... that does sort of make her the perfect tragedy.

The funniest bit of the entire Fire Nation royal family is how stupid some of their decision are, yet somehow they keep working out in their favour?? Like Sozin loses his boyfriend (the Avatar. The one who keeps the balance) by suggesting the Fire Nation goes to war, and then the Fire Nation goes to war anyway. Ozai’s nephew dies in a presumably horrific way and he believes that’s a brilliant moment to ask his dad to make him next in line to the throne, and when that backfires, his wife saves him and their kids and he manages to become Firelord anyway. Iroh decides the best place to lie low and start a life outside of the war is to hide in the city he, personally, laid a 600 day siege on and become a renowned tea maker, and this would’ve worked out had his niece not taken over the city. He also wants tea SO BADLY while on the run that he canonically takes his chances on a potentially incredibly deadly plant (it’s the deadly plant) and he survives. Zuko’s numerous Impulsive and Arguably Bad Decisions that Somehow Work Out Anyway compile into a list so long I’d have to add a readmore to this post. Iroh II proceeds to prove he really is Zuko’s grandson and thinks it a good plan to firepunch a bomb, before deciding to take down a whole squad of airplanes by like, figuring out how to fly one as it’s flying and doing some good firebending to destroy the planes, and he somehow manages to make it work.
Azula appears to be the only one in the family who didn’t get the strong version of the “Make Impulsive and Dumb Plans that can Never Work Out but Do Somehow”-gene (thanks to Ursa’s DNA probably) and she still lost, largely because of elements outside of her control. Imagine being the spawn of the family who fosters all of the ‘best’ traits present in the line (resourceful, highly intelligent, physically powerful) and you still lose to the uncle who thought it brilliant to become popular in a city that hates him and the brother whose plans can all be summed up as “fuck around; find out; success”, because you didn’t plan for something that ended up occurring but you couldn’t ever have expected. I, too, would cry.

Avatar Live Action Spoilers

The fact that Gyatso was explicitly killed by Sozin in this adaptation, both of whom we know were close to Roku... my god, the parallels!
Like, Roku probably told Gyatso about Sozin when they were young. Did Gyatso know who it was that was killing him? The same Sozin Roku told him about, now trying to kill Roku's reincarnation?
And I doubt Sozin knew about Gyatso.... but what if he did? Saw in Gyatso the "betrayal" of Roku, part of the reason Roku stood against his glorious plan to rule everyone?
And Gyatso tells Aang he will always be his friend! That resonates so much harder knowing what we know about him and Roku! Gaaaah.
Swear to god, they better lean into the feels hard if we ever get a "The Avatar and the Fire Lord" retelling, because that's gonna hurt even more when our first intro to Sozin is him killing Gyatso.
EDIT: ALSO, Sozin really had an axe to grind against Roku in this version, huh? He not only let Roku die (i'm assuming, if they keep that element of the backstory. Heck, maybe Sozin flat-out killed him this time around), but personally went to the air temple to kill the reincarnation of his friend (as a child), while Gyatso loved and protected the reincarnation of his friend until the end (since he still believed Aang was in the temple).

Watching Avatar: The Last Airbender and I just realized Zuko has Sozin’s eyes. I could write something beautiful about it but I feel as though it speaks entirely for itself

Has anyone ever talked about how the term "Fire Lord" is gender neutral? Because as far as I know, it is.
Azula called herself Fire Lord when Ozai announced his ascension to Phoenix King so I'm guessing the gender of the Fire Nation's leader doesn't matter. Izumi, Zuko's daughter, is referred to as Fire Lord. No matter the gender the title will always be Fire Lord.
So. A Fire Lord's wife is known as the Fire Lady. My question now is, if the term Fire Lord is gender neutral, is Fire Lady as well?
Can I have a female Fire Lord with her husband who's the Fire Lady? Or a gay couple with one being the Fire Lord, ruler of the nation, and the other the Fire Lady, the husband?
Because I think that's how it should work. I want both titles to be gender neutral and for Fire Lady to really just be what the spouse of the current ruler is called.
I'd like to have this confirmed, but considering that the only female Fire Lord we've seen on screen has been Izumi and the title of General Iroh's father hasn't been revealed I can only guess.
Canon to me

Was thinking about Avatar again and wanted to redraw some of my old art (old Roku and Fang comic redraw -hopefully- coming soon).
Hands are about to be thrown in the after-life
[id: a digital illustration. A young adult Ta Min is glaring at Sozin. She holds a sword pointed at him in one hand with an angry Roku up on her hip. The background is a green and purple gradient with light pouring in from the top. /end id]

The Kyoshi Novels really help contextualize why Sozin was so upset with Roku for opposing him. Kyoshi had been around for CENTURIES, largely to keep an eye on the Fire Nation. Now she is finally gone and after the longest wait in history, the Fire Nation has an Avatar again. And the last Fire Nation Avatar? Szeto? He literally worked for the Fire Lord, focusing on strengthening the Nation's government. Now add on how close Roku and Sozin were. It's no wonder Sozin expected Roku to side with him.

atla/tlok characters that i think did *it* (but i just can’t prove it)
this is the most unserious post i’ve ever made. (AND I WANT TO PREFACE BY SAYING BY *IT* I MEAN KISSING)
Sozin and Roku
Tumblr media
and history will say that they were just great friends…
this is the only one where ill legitimately die on this hill
like i’m 90% sure roku just showed Aang their friendship in the flashbacks to prevent awkwardly explaining to a 12 year old monk that he was romantically and/or physically involved with the person who committed a g*nocide against his people
LIKE CMON WHY IN THE WORLD WAS SOZIN SO PRESSED IN THE BACKGROUND OF ROKU’S WEDDING ??? AND FOR NO REASON?? WHY WAS THEIR FRIENDSHIP SO INTENSE?
sozin i feel loved roku (to an obsessive level) and roku literally dgaf. king shit
Wan and Raava
Tumblr media
genuinely what the fuck was going on between these two. like i don’t even have any words
canonically at the very least it was a domestic partnership
S2 korra doesn’t make sense at the best of times. imagine trying to explain the intensity of this pair’s devotion to each other, to someone who hasn’t seen the show- all the while knowing raava is a disembodied spirit practically older than time
she’s the embodiment of everything good and light in the universe and he’s just wan. (and he’s wanough <3)
‘do you think we’re soulmates in every life?’
‘bet’
‘wait that’s not what i-‘
Cabbage Merchant and his cabbages (or at least a cabbage)
Tumblr media
yeah i’m not touching this one with a 10 foot pole
Every member of the red lotus squad
Tumblr media
ah yes it’s my favourite evil polycule
amidst plans to kidnap children and topple monarchies what else is there to do except… kiss.
let’s be real there’s something so inherently romantic about being apart of an elite, vaguely murderous anarchist squad
they all share one exact bed. it’s canon
(p’li somehow big spoons all of them)
The S2 Nomads
Tumblr media
these dudes are the textbook definition of anti-monogamy
like they’re obsessed with love so i fully believe that they think ‘it should be spread amongst others’ or some shit
oh to be a travelling communist nomad in a band, wandering the wilds with my wife, and our several partners
they’re somehow the opposite of the red lotus and yet the same. they all share a single bed/sleep area
The dangerous ladies (but all separately)
Tumblr media
i don’t ship any of these particularly and yet can still admit that it’s canon
ty-lee and azula have kissed bc azula probably made up a dumb excuse like ‘oh i don’t want my first kiss with a guy to be… erm… bad’
mai and ty-lee have kissed because they both probably have genuine, vaguely deep rooted romantic feelings for each other
mai and azula have kissed to purely spite zuko (and yknow what ty-lee too)
HOWEVER A KEY ASPECT TO THIS DYNAMIC: azula is completely unaware about the ty-lee and mai thing. it’s uh… better off that way.
Hakoda and Bato
Tumblr media
i ship this about 50% but like… it’s got to have happened once right? considering all that down time they spent together on a boat away from the repercussions of water tribe society…
also considering they were leaders i doubt the other warriors were in a position to ever call them out on it
like cmoooooooon what’s a little kiss between the homies every now and again?
hakoda is where sokka gets his rizz/flagrant bisexuality from and i can’t change that guys

'Sozin outlawed homosexuality because Roku rejected him' has got to be the funniest commonly accepted Avatar headcanon at least to me.

From my understanding of ATLA is that Sozin and Roku’s situationship failed and then Sozin got all salty about it and banned gay marriage
