What Matters - LN

A heads up. This idea was formed during writing for Born For Red? Not usually something I'd write about but idk I like the idea so I'm running with it.

Summary: Y/n is an F2 driver who takes a shunt in Silverstone and from that, news comes to light that she'd been in denial of and Lando had been clueless to.

Themes: Non-fatal race crash, pregnancy, career sacrifice

A home race for both Lando and y/n. The young couple are a new fan favourite and it's safe to say that with McLaren finally seeing some improvements, Lando is looking forward to it.

Y/n hasn't had a bad season so far and Silverstone seems to be no different.

"This diet isn't working. The suit is tight." Y/n sighs making her trainer look at her for a moment before sighing as she picks up her helmet. "We'll need to figure it out later."

The sprint race is going ahead and y/n intends to make it her best sprint race of the season and follow up with her best feature race of the season tomorrow.

It's only 21 laps but she is on pole. She's got this in the bag and her boyfriend is there to watch as promised. They're both going into this confident.

Y/n gets into her car, getting strapped in and sighing as she sits happily in the cockpit.

A radio check as she waits for the formation lap to start. She is feeling pretty good about the whole thing no doubt.

They get back onto the grid and y/n gets a great start, he reaction time completely destroying the rest of the field.

"Good start y/n, you got this win in the bag." Her race engineer states as she flies through Copse corner in lap 3.

Lando is watching on the pit wall with Zak of all people clapping and smiling as he watches his girlfriend pass by. The cameras capture his pride over her race going so well, even if P2 is closing in on her.

It still takes till lap 19 for the gap to be a threat. But what no one expects is to watch a horror of history almost repeating itself. P2 pulls a move that Lewis pulled in 2021 and y/n is sent flying in copse corner. Not at the speed Max had been going at since it's still an F2 car, but not all that far off and the impact makes earns audible gasps from the crowds.

"Y/n? Y/n, are you ok?" Her race engineer asks waiting for a reply that feels like it's taking forever. Every second stretching out as the red flag is waved and the medical car rushes out to get to her while the marshalls rush to try and get her out the car as flames appear from the back.

"Yeah." She grunts through the radio her breaths hard and unsteady.

Her radio communication cuts as she hauls herself out the car with urgency to move from the marshalls since they're trying to put out the fire but she has to move.

Y/n stumbles grimacing when she trips, her legs ache and her back hers. Her head isn't feeling all to great and just as the medic gets to her, she is ripping off her helmet and balaclava, throwing them on the floor before using his support as she leans over and vomit spills out of her onto the gravel.

"It's in shock." The medic states to the other medic he arrived with. "Let's just get her to the car till the ambulance gets here."

Y/n grunts before she leans back and lets out heavy breaths as she's seated.

Y/n ended up being transferred to the hospital where her trainer and race engineer both accompanied her.

"Hey, superstar." Josh, her trainer smiles softly while she begins to apologise. "No. None of that. You know that was not your fault. Don't you dare apologise."

"But I lost us-"

"You were involved in a huge crash, y/n. Stop being hard on yourself."

"Scared me there for a second with that radio. Never heard you so quiet for so long." Eddie laughs gently, both of them making the effort to try and perk her up. "The race got red flagged and ended there."

They keep talking trying to earn smiles and laughs from y/n while she swallows thickly trying to ignore the ache while they wait for test results to make sure anything they give her is ok.

"Y/n y/l/n. Hello, I'm Dr Smith. It's nice to meet you...I've been reviewing your test results and...we have some concerns. Might you want to speak alone or-"

"They can stay." Y/n shrugs not thinking the results can be that bad and if they are then both men need to know anyway.

The doctor looks between the three before letting out a sigh.

"We're happy to give you some strong painkillers to help with the pain, it should pass but they'll be some aches for a couple days. We want the medic who sent you to keep a close eye on you." The doctor explains before sighing. "You're pregnant. We can't say how far but we can give you a quick examination."

Both Eddie and Josh seem like they might need to sit down and y/n sighs swallowing.

"I'm somewhere between 2 and 3 months...I think."

"Jesus Christ." Josh mutters stepping away. "Y/n, why didn't you tell us? Do you know the kind of risk you put yourself at?"

"Yes...I didn't know for certain. It thought it might just be the birth control." Y/n tries to defend before she swallows thickly.

"Y/n." Eddie sighs taking her hand. "It'll be ok." He turns to the doctor. "Look, is there anything else you need? Can we get her on painkillers and she can handle the pregnancy matter with her doctor?"

"Yes, yes. We'll get everything for you and discharge you."

"Lando Norris takes P2. Only 2 hours after watching his girlfriend take a massive shunt that landed her in hospital. But we've just heard she is back in the paddock and awaiting her boyfriend to pull up to the P2 sign for qualifying. I think-yes, there she is with her own trainer next to her while wrapped in a blanket." Crofty states while the cameras turn to capture the drugged up young woman who is definitely very happy and not feeling any of the pain she'd bene in.

Josh had been giving Lando updates, not including the news of the pregnancy but the moment Lando hears of y/n's presence awaiting for him in parc ferme.

Last time he saw her was them cutting the camera when she was sick on the gravel. She was clearly in pain and shock from the impact of the crash.

"Are you ok?"

"Oh I'm so good." Y/n nods with a laugh while Josh smiles at Lando.

"The doctors gave her something for the pain. Don't worry." Josh assures him while y/n smiles brightly at Lando who looks worried but nods and smiles. "The two of you can talk later, don't worry."

That sparks some concern and almost curiosity as to why they need to talk.

Y/n sighs looking at her tummy it's not a huge bump. Easily mistake as bloating or just as some gained weight.

"Fuck sake." She mutters before grimacing at the sight of the bumps and bruises.

She's out of the race tomorrow purely from injury. But really after tomorrow when she has her meeting with the team and talks to the FIA, she'll be out of the season. There's obvious reason as to why she won't be able to part take.

But right now she has to find out how her boyfriend is going to react.

"Baby! Where are you?" Lando asks making her shift in the bath that she'd ran for herself and hidden her body in.

"Bathroom!" She calls back before seeing him quickly appear, already half undressed clearly ready join her. "The drugs have worn off a little so take it easy. I'm fragile."

Lando nods climbing in and sitting down behind her. His cool body taking a few moments to warm up to the hot water around them.

"I'm so glad you're ok. And don't worry about tomorrow, you've got plenty of other races to prove you can win F2 and get a seat in F1." Lando rambles making her wince.

"No. I can't...I'm not doing any other races." Y/n states making his body tense before he shifts to lean to her left and uses his hand to turn her head so she's looking at him.

"You can't just quit because of one crash, baby. It knocks your confidence but it doesn't make you stop-"

"I'm pregnant, Lando. And I'm already in trouble for suspecting I might be and racing anyway...It's not the crash that's stopping me. Trust me." Y/n states while Lando looks at her just stunned. "I know it's bad timing and I'm certain your not ready for this. I get it. It's fine. But I-"

"I'm sorry." Lando murmurs making her turn away from him, blinking away the tears.

The pain of the crash didn't hurt anything like this.

"No, baby. I'm sorry because it's my fault. And it's costing you your career." Lando states reading her mind in her thinking that he's about to dump her for being pregnant. "What do you want to do?"

"I'm keeping it...I couldn't...get rid of it." Y/n frowns then sighing as she slumps back against him, something he pulls her back into as she does.

"We're gonna have the cutest kid and you can get back into racing."

Unlikely, but not impossible.

"I'm going to do everything I can to have the best race tomorrow for you and our baby." Lando declares making her smile softly feeling him tuck his face into her neck and kiss her. "So what about the crash?"

"They said the shock was just my body reacting to the pain. I don't remember the impact much, they think it was just a little head knock." Y/n sighs then frowning as Lando locates a bruise on her hand from where she'd tried to grab the steering wheel after initially taking her hands off of it but it turned and hit her hand instead. "A little bruised."

News broke of y/n's withdrawal from F2 and her replacement stepping up into her place. The reason was not given but the rumours are wild. Not one of them is right or even indicating that they have the right idea.

Y/n had to meet with the FIA who agreed there was no way for her to continue safely if she was continuing with the pregnancy. But respected that she would choose when was the right time to give the public and media her reason for leaving the season and her seat in F2.

Y/n is in the McLaren garage, waiting for the start of the race. They have all just got into position grid after the formation loop and it's waiting for lights out.

Y/n holds her breath, praying for a good start. Praying for her boyfriend to keep P2 at the very least.

But when the lights go out and Lando gets in front of Max, the entire garage, along with the entire crowd go wild. Cheers and yelling as if the victory has been taken already. Though regardless of the outcome, there is nothing that's going to beat Lando's moment. His leading of the British Grand Prix.

Y/n's tears that escape are of pure joy and she hugs Cisca beside her just feeling complete and utter pride.

No one beyond Y/n's team, Lando and the FIA know why y/n has pulled out. Most assume it's just some injury of her crash that has taken her out of the running.

There is no doubt in anyone's mind, as the McLaren team has learned of the expecting parents. The excitement is growing but it's not until Singapore that Lando thinks is the right time to announce that there's a McLaren baby on the way.

And he does it in a way that y/n wasn't expecting despite having agreed to announce it whenever he was ready. She didn't expect for him to flash her growing bump that has been well hidden by layered outfits or oversized clothes.

The grin on his face as he pulls up the hoodie showing the 5 month bump only earns a laugh from y/n as the photographers go wild over the moment.

"Trust you to make it public knowledge like that." Y/n laughs shaking her head as they walk into the McLaren unit and she sighs deciding to take off the hoodie since it's pretty hot in Singapore and the last thing she really needs is more layers if she can avoid it.

"I think it was a good way to reveal it to them."

"I'm sure you do think that." Y/n hums while Lando just smirks lifting up her top to look at the bump again. "You know at some point it's not going to be a cute little bump. I'm going to be huge and it'll look like-"

"Stop reading those horror pregnancy posts. I don't care what happened so long as you're safe, unharmed and happy and so is our baby." Lando shrugs cutting her off since y/n during her research of what is the best way to give birth and what preparations are smart has came across some horror stories which their doctor has assured them both is incredibly rare and so unlikely to happen that it's simply not worth the extra stress she puts on herself which would only increase the risk of her pregnancy.

"Yeah, yeah." Y/n hums before she sighs softly and tilts her head at him. "Love you."

"I love you too and now the world knows you didn't just give up because of nothing."

Y/n wavers since especially in the past month, she's been torn into for attending F1 races and seeming completely fine. Even with the FIA statement that cemented they were responsible for really putting the hammer down on her not continuing. Because they didn't give a real reason, it was claimed to be a cover and lie for her.

Not that it was even any of their business to comment anyway. If she wants to give up her F2 career to be a couch potato, that's her choice. If it's a waste of talent then that's not up to them to tell her she made a mistake because she chooses what she does with her life.

"So we've all seen the photos, the videos, the confirmation. You are going to be a dad, Lando. How are you feeling about the season with this?" The Sky reporter asks as they sit in the press conference.

"It's great, I'm excited. I mean I'm sad, this is what cut y/n's time short in F2 for the season and obviously that's the last thing I want. But we are both so happen about this. We love each other and we've both very excited to have a family started together." Lando nods while the other drivers who learned of the pregnancy a couple weeks ago look pretty happy for the young man too.

"Well congratulations I think I spend for everyone when I say that child is going to be born into a very talented racing family and if they choose to follow yours and y/n's footsteps. We might see another Norris in the F1 grid following your eventual retirement."

According to a source close to the couple, they had a huge fight following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend. Apparently, Leclerc was more than dissatisfied with his race results after ending the 2021 season with a 10th place finish. The Ferrari driver seemed unhappy with L/N's lack of attendance during the season and in his opinion, she should've been more supportive and attended more races to cheer him on. To which Y/N responded that he knew that she was going to be busy due to her music career when they started dating. After going back and fourth, screaming at each other, the couple called it quits during the heat of the fight. After this L/N could be seen leaving their shared hotel room and going to the airport, alone.

The couple have been one of the most popular celebrity couples since they started dating in 2018, following L/N's breakup with footballer Neymar and fans have been very invested throughout the years. Starting off the 2024 season with Keiki because I've been thinking about her a lot lately

Artist's Note:

I decided to experiment a little more with my rendering style via using a more traditional approach to drawing in the shadows. I like how much texture this piece has as a result, my friend told me it looks like something out of a storybook and that was the look I was inspired by so I'm glad it turned out that way.

Also, when it came to doing the front view of the nose, I just went "fuck it" and made it a dot because why learn anatomy when you can just default to what 5 year old you did when drawing faces?

I also had an idea of how to draw Keiki's dress as that has always been something I've struggled with since it's kinda confusing to draw lol. I also gave Keiki some earrings in the shape of a kofun tomb because we need more Keiki with earrings (I could have also taken from IRL but I'll save that for when I draw Keiki next). Speaking of Kofun tombs, I made the thing she's laying down on the shape of a Kofun tomb, because this is also kind of a redraw of some old Keiki fanart from 2021 that I will show right here.

I liked the concept of it (i.e. Keiki in the middle of a Kofun keyhole with the fire thing she has surrounding her) so I decided to try at that concept again just for fun. Back then I was very adamant on staying as close to canon as possible, but now I'm a lot more lenient with how I draw the characters. The pose in the 2021 drawing was inspired by that one Shinra-Bansho records MV where Keiki showed up for 5 seconds and the rest of it was Yachie but yeah. Also I always thought Keiki's apron was a dark green BUT NO IT WAS JUST A DARK SHADE OF FUCKING TEAL ZUN WHAT IS THE COLOUR THEORY BULLSHIT YOU HAVE CONFUSED ME FOR SO LONG-

anyways, I would say this is a pretty strong start to 2024 art wise, I'm gonna keep experimenting with this new rendering style because I like it a lot!

“You seem happy.”

Mick sighed contently, his head resting on your lap as the two of you stretched out in front of the fire. Snow was falling outside the large windows, but you were nice and toasty wrapped up in a blanket with your furnace of a boyfriend in your arms.

“I am happy. I’m with you. Alone in the mountains with no one to bother us.”

“Yeah,” you nodded, but that wasn’t what you meant. “I meant in general. You seem happier than you were last month. More relaxed.”

He rolled over so his blue eyes met yours, his lower lip between his teeth. “You mean since Haas fired me.”

“Baby,” you fought off the eye roll. “If they hadn’t fired you, you would have quit.”

“I wouldn’t have-”

“You should have. They treated you like shit.”

“At least I was on the grid.”

“But was it worth it?” He was silent. You’d been having a version of this conversation since 2021. “Was it really worth being blamed for their failure just so you could drive?”

He leant back into your hand that was scratching his head, almost cat-like as his eyes fluttered closed. “I guess not.”

“And if you hadn’t left, you wouldn’t have been given the opportunity that you have now at Mercedes.”

“I know, I just hate when you’re right.”

“I’m right all the time.”

“Yeah and I hate it,” he opened one eye, a grin spreading across his face.

“Fine, if you hate it so much I won’t show you the new things I bought from Agent Provocateur.”

“Wait, don’t they make lingerie?” You didn’t respond, picking your phone up from next to you and opening instagram. “Hase? They make lingerie, right?” You could see the desperation on his face from the corner of your eyes and couldn’t help the small smile edging its way on your lips. “Baby, I’m sorry, you know I was joking. Come on, you have to show me what you bought. Please? I’ll do anything.”

That piqued your interest. He rarely needed to beg you as you usually gave in straight away, so this was a nice change. “Anything?”

“Anything.”

He’s not quite sure what version of Buck he got back.

Nothing Left But You by Daisies_and_Briars/ @cal-daisies-and-briars ("Blip" AU | 27K | Teen | Warning: MCD): In May of 2021, 25% of Earth's population suddenly disappears. Including Eddie. In May of 2026, they all come back. Eddie finds himself suddenly in the middle of a world he doesn't recognize, where the people he loves most have changed significantly.

I have seen a lot of criticism on Charles’ mentality because he didnt fight the team’s order telling him to hold position. People are saying he lacks the edge to win WDC.

Do you think Charles should defy the team order from a technical point of view?

He needs to learn to push back against team orders more often, yes. But to say he lacks the edge to win a WDC is ridiculous. We all saw him in 2019 eat up Sebastian Vettel despite team orders. The difference with yesterday is that Max Verstappen in a Red Bull is currently a little unbeatable, and Ferrari is now P2 in the constructors only 4 points off of Red Bull due to Charles helping them to maximise points. Charles could have fought Carlos quite easily and probably overtaken him for P1, but they would have wasted precious tyre deg and Carlos could have been easily overtaken by Lando then, especially since Carlos's tyre deg was higher than Charles's in the final laps, thus losing Ferrari three points.

So Charles obeying team orders was probably the right thing to do for the team on this occasion. The only issue I have is everyone going "oh Carlos is the only one who can beat Max Verstappen! Charles is so washed! Ferrari fired the wrong driver!" without looking at the whole picture. Both times, Charles has graciously played the role of second driver when needed in order to secure the team a win (a role Carlos has not reciprocated, lest we forget Vegas). It's just unfortunate that the only times Carlos beats him in a quali head to head are the times that Max is out of commission and Ferrari has the chance of fighting for a win. But I believe Charles's time will come again, after all seven front row starts in a row isn't too shabby.

Someone (I forget who) said it best in that this season for Charles will likely parallel Max's 2020 season, which was quietly fantastic. Apart from retirements, Max didn't finish a race below P6, which he only did once and then rest of the time finished in the top 3, pulling in two wins along the way. In a lot of ways, it sets Charles's 2025 season up to also parallel Max's 2021 season, a new teammate, the year before new regs, and an ever-improving technical team at the factory.....well I'll leave it up to you to draw conclusions.

Additionally, Max didn't win a championship until his seventh year in Formula 1, up until then there were also washed allegations surrounding him, and look at him now. The 2024 season is Charles's seventh season. Charles is only approaching his prime. He's still the third youngest driver to ever win a grand prix, and has a pole count equal with some WDCs. Just because Charles followed team orders in order to help secure his team two wins in an era that has otherwise been absolutely dominated by Max Verstappen in a Red Bull does NOT mean he's not WDC material.

the ordem paranormal universe masterpost

ordem paranormal is a ttrpg universe created by cellbit. it started in 2020. as of today, ordem paranormal has 4 seasons, 2 spin offs, and the first one-shot to be aired on september 23rd.

ordem paranormal takes place in a universe with two dimensions: the normal and the paranormal.

the normal dimension is where we live as human beings, while the paranormal dimension is a completely different place, where everything that seems like the impossible can become real, like spirits, demons, among other kinds of anomalies connected to the after-life. those two places are separated by a layer called the membrane, the membrane stops the normal and the paranormal from coming in contact. however, the membrane can be weakened by fear of the supernatural, making horrendous and dangerous monsters enter our reality. this phenomenon usually happens in specific locations, prone to the perception of fear, like abandoned hospitals, old houses and deactivated sanatoriums.

all across the world, different groups have formed, looking for ways to weaken the membrane, trying to destroy it and blend the two dimensions, with the objective of seeking their own wishes, or even, fulfilling a bigger purpose. the members of this groups are called occultists. to stop chaos from being stored, a secret global organization was created: ordo realitas. common people who live double lives to stop the acts done by occultists, which aim to increase the contact between normal people and the paranormal, increasing their fear, and consequently, weakening the membrane and allowing the paranormal to cross over.

official campaigns

-> the first campaign aired on february 29th, 2020, and it's called ordem paranormal: iniciação (initiation) it has 5 episodes that are around 4 hours each and all the episodes have been translated to english.

"this story begins in the early hours of february 29th, 2020, when the neighborhood of “nostradamus school” hears a terrifying scream coming from inside the building, the same place which hours before had been consumed by the flames of a fire. this leads ordo realitas to summon their rookie members to investigate the scene, where the presence of paranormal activity is suspected."

-> the second campaign aired on april 11th, 2020, and it's called ordem paranormal: o segredo na floresta (the secret in the forest) it has 16 episodes that are around 4 hours each and all the episodes have been translated to english.

"on april 11th, around ten o'clock in the morning, a team from ordo realitas has a meeting scheduled with the man known as senhor veríssimo. everyone goes to veríssimo's room and there he introduces them to team kelvin, a team of veteran agents who were sent to investigate a strange murder case involving a spiral symbol that ended up mysteriously disappearing without any prior notice."

-> the third campaign aired on october 31st, 2020, and it's called ordem paranormal: desconjuração (deconjuration) it has 20 episodes that are around 4 hours each and the episodes are currently being translated into english.

"the santo berço (holy cradle) was destroyed. the restructured ordo realitas now operates from an underground base. from there, the man known as senhor veríssimo commands a legion of agents who, with the help of more intense methods, seek to save the world from the growing threat of the occult. with a new formation, the team receives a mission of searching and rescuing one of the order's most important agents who disappeared while investigating a strange occult branch, known only as the order of deconjuration."

-> the fourth campaign aired on september 4th, 2021 and it's called ordem paranormal: calamidade (calamity) it has 13 episodes that are around 5 hours each. it has not been translated yet.

"with no sign of any interference with the balance, a new lead makes ordo realitas start to act again. an old case, reporting on an entity described as "o diabo" (the devil), brings together a new team of agents. together, they must further investigate the case as they continue their search for the power of the calamity relics."

the official campaign has been on a hiatus since calamity.

spin-offs

-> the first spin-off aired on june 25th, 2022 and it's called ordem paranormal: o segredo na ilha (the secret in the island) it has 8 episodes that are around 5 hours each. it has not been translated yet.

"on an isolated island, there is a huge mansion, built by a painter who mysteriously disappeared more than 20 years ago. an art appraiser is hired to spend a few days inside this mansion, looking for valuable paintings inside. to do this, he decides to take his family on the trip. after all, what could go wrong?"

(for the qsmp enjoyers, this is where montelyson/romero richas comes from)

-> the second spin-off aired on october 29th, 2022 and it's called ordem paranormal: sinais do outro lado (signs from the other side), it has 7 episodes that are around 4 hours each. it has not been translated yet.

"the paranormal doesn't come to our reality easily,, but things weren't always like that. the year is 1997, several cases of disappearances happen in the south of brazil. a group decides to investigate the disappearance of their mentor, a paranormal hunter who has extensive research into aliens, mysterious and dangerous creatures. however, something or someone, more powerful and unknown, may be behind all this."

you can watch the spin-offs without watching the official campaign, because although they happen in the same universe and some characters may show up on these stories, they are not connected to what happens on the main story, although the spin-offs may contain information about some things from the official campaigns.

one-shot

-> the first one-shot is going to be aired on september 23rd, 2023, and it's called ordem paranormal: quarentena (quarantine) and it will have 1 episode. this will be the first ordem paranormal session in english/spanish and it won't be connected to the main campaign, just in the same universe.

"at the offices of a multinational company called “panacea industries”, five people, looking for ways to make quick money, decide to carry out the scientific test of a new medicine. but perhaps the true intentions of this organization are not so clear when you look at it from the other side."

How can I stay positive regarding the wildfires?

It can be really hard in the face of so much destruction. I don't know how much anyone can specifically stay positive in the face of disasters like this -

but I can give you some thoughts about how to let hope live alongside everything else you're feeling about this, and how to avoid spiraling and remember that this is not proof that we're doomed.

Possibly relevant note lol is that I've lived my whole life in California, so suffice to say figuring out how to move forward among the consequences and destruction of massive wildfires is something I'm definitely not new to.

I remember walking to my classroom in elementary school, about 20 years ago now, and it was literally snowing ash around me. This too shall pass.

Take a few deep breaths. I know it's cliche but it's also important

Zoom out in terms of perspective: Wildfires can make the sky look apocalyptic (like I said, I have lots of experience with this!), but they are regional, and they always end. These wildfires are awful but this specific wave of fires is happening in just one country in a huge, huge world. There's far more land that isn't burning

Canada is about to get substantial international aid in fighting the wildfires - there are already 200 additional firefighters headed over from the US and France, and Canada (Quebec specifically) is also already in talks with Costa Rica, Portugal, and Chile about additional firefighters/resources. Help is on the way and these numbers really will make a big difference, and as the disaster continues (unfortunately it is uh...pretty early in fire season), more help will be sent. People are doing what they can to help, because in the face of disaster, that's what we're wired to do

There are actually MUCH better fire management plans than just about anyone is using, esp in North America but that we COULD implement and increasingly WILL going forward. A lot of the wildfire situation these days is because of the West's incredibly wrongheaded derision toward traditional Indigenous land and ecosystem management practices, including cultural prescribed burns that keep massive wildfires from happening. California in particular is already partnering with several First Nations to revive prescribed burns, to significant success. As fires continue to be terrible, more and more places will get on board with this. We can and will implement practices that will truly change our situation

Cultural burns work because, ironically, the reason for the wildfires is that "is that we've been so good at putting out every fire possible that it has led to overly dense forests and a buildup of burnable material like branches and dry vegetation" that makes wildfires much worse in a number of ways. At lower intensity, however, as with cultural burns, forest fires can actually have huge environmental benefits

Finally, every time a natural disaster happens like this, as awful and destructive as they are, it serves as a wake-up call for thousands of people and adds both ever-mounting urgency and ever-mounting evidence to the importance of fighting climate change, which really does translate into action. For a lot of people, "saving the environment" feels super distant - but you know what feels super immediate? Saving their homes from burning down (or getting flooded or otherwise destroyed, etc. etc.) In 2021, the UN ran the world's largest climate survey, across 1.2 million people and 50 nations, and almost TWO-THIRDS SAID THAT CLIMATE CHANGE IS A GLOBAL EMERGENCY THAT WE NEED TO WORK HARDER TO ADDRESS. Imagine that 10 years ago! That other third of people aside, this really is real and massive progress

Also, every time there's a big disaster like this, climate change deniers look more and more baldly ridiculous. Think about it: How often did you hear US Republicans bullshitting about climate change denial 10 years ago? And how often do you hear them doing it now? In fact, there's increasing evidence that Republicans really are shifting on climate change (mind you they're managing to do it in an obnoxiously somehow pro-fossil-fuel way, but it's still a major sea change). Some of them are literally calling for a clean energy transition, and Kevin McCarthy himself (guy in charge of the US House right now) created a task force for to a conservative climate change agenda that acknowledges climate change is real. There's now a conservative climate conference that does active lobbying and a House Conservative Climate Caucus, which somehow has SIXTY MEMBERS. Again, something that would've been unimaginable just six or seven years ago.

Every acre that the fires burn this year is an acre that's pretty guaranteed to not burn next year, for what that's worth. (And I do think it's worth mentioning, esp with such a high number of acres)

The battles are going to be hard, but I truly believe that even the ones we lose often bring us closer to winning the war.

Fires burn, but life always grows back.
