The 2023 Diaries: Week 1

Decided to get back to my roots on here and use this blog as a space to reflect on my experiences in the classroom. My goal is to record a few thoughts at the end of each week, as a record I can look back on in the years to come.

This week I started my eighth year of teaching! I moved to fourth grade (down from fifth where I've been the last seven years) and (finally) started at the school where I was hired for last school year!

I have 26 students at the moment, but we're wildly uneven: 17 girls and 9 boys! All three classes have a similar balance, so it's quite a girl-heavy grade. This class is definitely much younger than I am used to working with. I didn't realize how much students mature in this year, but it's apparently a lot! Everything is a lot slower and takes more time than I'm used to, but I really like the change of pace. My team is wonderfully welcoming, which is something I desperately needed after last year's chaos.

This week, we did our annual library project, where my class tours all of the books that I have and decides how they want to organize the classroom library for the year. This year, the books are sorted by genre and then organized by author within that. It took four afternoons (instead of the usual three) but they got it done!

We also did a lot of math mindset work, and I was really impressed at how much my students were able to persevere. Last year, my students had a particularly hard time struggling with math, so it's nice to be back at a school that encourages resilience in more deliberate ways.

I had my first discipline issue of the year this week when one of my boys hit another. The hitter is a student with a history of emotional regulation struggles, so we'll be spending a little extra time on that in the coming weeks. I also have a few girls who have a history of being sneaky and trying to get away with things, so I'll have to keep an eye on that and nip it in the bud.

Overall, though, I'm really excited about this year!

I fell asleep at 7:00 p.m. woke up at 1:00 a.m. for a while. And finally got back to sleep. I still feel like I have been hit by a bus.

I ate breakfast and had lots of coffee and neither one has motivated me to actually get a move on. I just want to sit on my bed for the rest of the day.

At some point though all that caffeine and glucose is going to start reaching my muscles and I will have to actually start the day. I am hoping and praying it is not as rough as yesterday and yet thanking God for getting me through it.

School Life Update #1

just started school last Monday. I'm taking 3 online classes, and oh boy is it a lot of work. 😅 😮‍💨 Biology and history are gonna be interesting this semester, psyc is more laid back based on the due dates and workload each week.

anyway, this is my last year in this college and then I'll finally be transferred to a 4-year uni near my home. 🥳

A very good first week of school! Although I think I got sick. I'm taking 17 credit hours and trying desperately to stay on top of it. So my weekly plan for work is as follows:

You can see what i completed and what my progress was. Some stuff was hard to do because we just don't have enough homework or reading material out for the class yet so i did what i could and started on next weeks class work as well.

Hopefully I'll be able to keep up with everything!

Okay. I guess this makes sense. You get a bit of leeway on the first day. Maybe not here, yet. Though this is a reasonable response (if not from the principal who -- has no relationship with any students whatsoever.)

Thinking back, I actually had the routine problem through middle and high early in the year of forgetting and so walking late into class. The teacher let it slide. The effect here is that the story is indeed relatable, and maybe it could be done more interestingly, but changing it -- I gather thinking through the ramifications of if this is how it would proceed on a first day -- leaves the question of "who cares?"

This panel is probably where the shift had to happen for believability. Or, if I get a quiz on the first day as presented as such, I knew it was not graded.
