James Potter x Fem!Slytherin!Reader
Next Part Series Masterlist
Summary: In which James Potter is beyond shocked to see you introduced as the newest Order member. After all, to him, youโ€™re nothing but a cruel, cold, pureblooded Slytherin
Word Count: 1.2K
Warnings: House stereotyping/prejudice (I think that's it, if not, let me know please!)
A/N: The inspiration for this came while I was reading @ellecdc's Sirius Black x Reader series called Come Back, Be Here and it was such an amazing read! Go read it if you haven't already! <33
โ”€โ”€โ”€โ€ป ยทโ†ยท โ€ปโ”€โ”€โ”€
The Order of the Phoenix, a secret society founded by the Headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore, was gathered once again in another secret location. All the members were seated in their respective seats, looking at the Headmaster to begin speaking.
โ€œThank you all for coming on such short notice.โ€ Dumbledore said, his voice bouncing off the walls, โ€œI received a tip that revealed a death eater meeting is to take place tonight, not too far from Diagon Alley.โ€ He said. โ€œI will have to arrange a few members to be sent to scout out the meeting, but before that, I have an important announcement.โ€
Everyone in the room exchanged glances, a nervousness settling for what could be bad news to be revealed.
โ€œI have recruited a new member, who has already proven what a great asset she will be to our team.โ€
โ€œWho?โ€ Sirius asked.
Albus Dumbledore gestured towards the door, โ€œCome in.โ€
You strutted in, dressed in dark clothes with your wand twirling between your fingers as a smile sat upon your lips.
โ€œYou!โ€
And two sets of chairs screeched as two individual wands were directed at you.
โ€œWhat are you doing here?!โ€ James shouted, Sirius nodding as he backed his best mate.
โ€œCharming. Quite a nice welcome youโ€™ve all prepared for me, Headmaster?โ€
Dumbledoreโ€™s blue eyes twinkled as he directed his gaze from you to the pair of Black and Potter.
โ€œWands down, boys. Y/n L/n will henceforth be joining us from today.โ€ He said, declaring it to the whole room.
โ€œBut, Professor!โ€ James exclaimed, โ€œY/nโ€™s a Slytherin!โ€
โ€œGee, thanks for noticing.โ€
James glared at you before he turned his eyes onto Dumbledore, his expression having turned into one of desperation. โ€œYou canโ€™t possibly let her join!โ€ He practically begged. โ€œTheyโ€™re all the same, the treacherous snakes canโ€™t be trusted!โ€
Dumbledore opened his mouth to reply but you beat him to it.
โ€œWell not everyone can be so dimwitted that they would end up in Gryffindor.โ€ You said, making both James and Sirius scowl.
"We are very intelligent, thank you very much!" Sirius interjected, making you shoot a look in return that said are you really though?
โ€œPlus," You continued "Not everyone is the same because even a lion could be a snake in disguise.โ€
Jamesโ€™ eyebrows furrowed together, โ€œWhat do you mean to imply by that?โ€
You merely shrugged, earning a scoff from James.
โ€œThatโ€™s enough now.โ€ Professor McGonagall called out sternly, making both you and James fall quiet and take your seats.
โ€œNow that we have exchanged small pleasantries,โ€ James and you loudly scoffed, โ€œOnto the mission. I will be sending out Remus Lupin, James Potter, Benjy Fenwick, Dorcas Meadowes and Y/n L/n.โ€ Dumbledore gently smiled, โ€œThis tip was given by Y/n herself and this proves how much of a help Y/nโ€™s addition to the Order will be.
A cry of protest sounded from the young Potter, โ€œHeadmaster! How can you believe her? For all we know, she could be sending us into a death trap!โ€ James exclaimed, glaring at you, who stood up with a scoff.
โ€œAnd that is the exact reason I am coming along! If something happens, I will be there too!โ€
โ€œNope! Not happening! Headmaster, I refuse to go if she goes!โ€ James said.
โ€œMr. Potter,โ€ McGonagall said, โ€œStop behaving so childish. Miss. L/n will be going and that is final.โ€
James grumbled and muttered, โ€œFine.โ€ Knowing by now that Professor McGonagall could get real scary when she needed to be.
โ€œGood, now get going.โ€
James glared your way to which you only smirked at him, irking the young Potter even more.
*.ยท:ยท.โœง โœฆ โœง.ยท:ยท.*
The mission was partially successful as like the tip you had given, there was a death eater meeting. However, they sensed the presence of Order members too early and before you all could even cast a spell their way, they had gone.
Most of the Order had been kind and accepted you in, after all, if Dumbledore trusted you, what reason did they have not to? Well, everyone except for Sirius Black and James Potter.ย
Especially James Potter.
He loathed you. Simple as that. Your mere existence irked him, like it has been since your shared days at Hogwarts. You always had a way that managed to annoy him, and he had been always determined to get under your skin every time he caught sight of you within the castle.
James wasnโ€™t sure when it started but the interactions between the two of you had become frequent since fifth year. He despised you for being a Slytherin, after all you were just like the rest, acting as if you were superior. But it was also the way you winked at him or that teasing smile that crawled onto your lips. Or how you would speak in a playful tone, flicking your hair over your shoulder every time you walked away or how you twirled your wand teasingly between your nimble fingers.
It infuriated him.
Everything about you annoyed James Potter to no end.
Henceforth, why he was so against your arrival into the Order and how he was determined to get at you every chance he could get.
"Wow, L/n, I'm surprised you haven't melted yet." James said later one evening at an Order meeting.
You cocked an eyebrow at him, "Meaning?"
"Meaning my burning hatred towards you, I was expecting you to have skedaddled out of here."
You gave him a weird look, "Well, that genuinely made no sense, Potter. Now excuse me." You said, returning to your conversation with Remus.
James grumbled, turning towards his best mate, "Moony! Stop hanging out with her!"
Remus let out an exasperated sigh, "Listen, Prongs, I love having you as a friend, truly I do, but if you're going to keep this up, I won't hesitate to hex your arse off the planet."
James stared at his best friend, dumbfounded, while you doubled over laughing.
"Moony," James muttered out hollowly, "How could you? You're my best friend!" He accused Remus in an over dramatic manner.
"And Y/n is also a friend of mine."
This threw James off completely, "She's WHAT!?"
"A friend. She was nothing but polite to me throughout school and I have no reason to be rude to her."
You shot Remus a smile of gratitude before moving your gaze to James, eyes turning cold as you stood up.
"I love to annoy you, truly, but I find it unfair how you're always taking out what most of my house has done against me. Not everyone is the same. I'm not like them." You breathed out, your voice wavering near the end.
James suddenly felt a weird sensation wash over him and he watched you turn around and go.
"Mate," James looked at his friend, his attention snapping from you to Remus, "You don't need to be so mean to her. She has gone through a lot."
James scoffed loudly, "I doubt that."
Remus gave his friend an expression of what looked like pity and exasperation. He patted James on the shoulder before walking away. James stood there, lost within his own thoughts. He shook his head vigorously after a few seconds.
No, to him you were merely one of them. You were from a family of death eaters. You were from the house that turned out all the dark wizards. You were just one of them and nothing more. And he hated them all.
"I hate you." He whispered.
Although, James' perception about you would be challenged as the next Order mission would bring an unexpected twist.

A/N: Ok, so I had this idea of this one scene and I was planning on just a oneshot but instead I decided to go ahead and make a mini series, just so I can write more about James and Reader in this enemies to lovers sort of trope. I've never really written for James before, so I hope you all liked it and stay tuned for the next one because it's going to be good! Love you all and take care! <33

In another universe, where Peter didn't betray the Potters, Narcissa Black turned her back on Lucious and Voldemort.
She didn't want her newborn son, Draco, to be dragged into a war that wasn't his to fight, so she told the Order about Voldemort's and Death Eaters whereabouts and got herself killed in the process.
Now, with Death Eaters stopped and Wizarding World slowly regaining balance, freshly orphaned Draco is adopted by Sirius and Remus.
Years later, in Hogwarts, he befriends his overly confident and stupidly brave "cousin", smart-ass wild-haired girl and shy but brutally honest ginger haired boy.
Thus
Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy become the next Marauders, solemnly swearing that they are up to no good.

The more I think about it the more I'm confused about Snape's so called "redemption arc".
We don't know much about his years at Hogwarts outside of the time James hanged him from his underwear and he called Lily a Mudblood, but we know that:
1. He had a disdain for Muggles ever since he was born or at least ever since he was 10 y/o bc that's when he meets Lily and Petunia and treats the latter like garbage.
2. He was friends with Mulciber and Avery- known death eaters, especially Mulciber who we know was particularly close with Baldy due to the time he came to Hogsmede with him for his job interview with dummydore.
From that we can assume that he was a witness and a participant in A Lot of hate crimes against Muggle Borns ever since he was a minor. One of which was the time Mary was the victim.
3. We know HE invented the spell James used to hang him from his panties, which must mean that he used it against others, probably muggle borns, and his DE friends must've used it as well.
4. We know he invented the spell Sectumsempra to use against his enemies?? (Sorry it's been a while since I read the books I don't remember the exact quote.) and his enemies are almost certainly the Marauders. Also maybe his dad but that's a discussion for another day.
5. We know he was one of Baldy's dearest death eaters, even tho he was a Half-Blood with no status and no connections, which means he definitely did a lot of horrific things to Muggles and Muggle borns and the members of the Order of Phoenix.
6. We know he heard Trelawney's prophesy after eavesdropping in a bar, and immediately ran to Baldy with it. He knew that by telling Baldy about the prophecy an innocent baby will be killed, and he didn't give a shit. I cannot stress enough how much that information in vital for his character. Taking a baby's life so that Baldy might give him a sit closer to him by the table. And nothing would've happened to him if he shut his mouth and didn't go to Baldy. He didn't have his life or even his status\loyalty on the line. He just sacrificed this anonymous innocent baby for kicks and giggles.
7. The only point in which he cared about his actions was when Lily's life was on the line. This wanker really didn't care that he just gave Baldy (a man who made it his life' mission to kill Lily and the likes of her) a reason to kill Lily's son and husband, who were practically her only source of joy while she fought against his people in the war. He just wanted the girl he slurred and stalked and mistreated in high-school to live with all her friends and family dead. And thought he was doing something good. I don't even know how to begin to describe how fucked up that is.
8. He went to Dummydore and asked him to save her. After he got her, her husband and her kid to be under an even worse constant death threat than they were before because of Lily's blood status and their participant in the order. And after he spent the last 3-4 years killing Lilyโ€™s friends and the people who share her blood status.
9. That was also the point in which he offered himself to be a double spy right?? Again real heroic of him to risk his life after all the shit he did because he was in love with a girl whose life he ruined. He never cared about all the shit he did and all the people he murdered and he never actually wanted to help innocent people or do good by the world or even by Lily.
10. After Baldy died for the first time and the first war ended, Harry had nobody left, and Dummydore put him with Petunia and Vernon. Snape knew better than anyone else what the Dursleys will do to Harry. He knew everything, and he didn't do shit. Not only did he not do shit, but he also made things worse for Harry by bullying and harassing him since the moment he stepped foot in the castle.
11. Extending on the last point- Snape bullied, harassed, abused, mistreated and discriminated against students at Hogwarts ever since he started teaching there, I'm not gonna start elaborating on all the times he did those things because that would take a different essay of similar length.
12. Yeah I don't really know what to add here? That's pretty much it I think.
So to conclude: am I really expected to forgive him because he loved Lily and had a hard time with James when they were 16 and he spied for Dummydore for a bit?? Being a looser in middle school and then becoming a double spy doesnโ€™t make up forโ€ฆ anything. Especially since he never stopped being a terrible person.

I actually do tend to put most of the Order we see in the photos around the same years, but my headcanon is that there were other older members but they all died by the time that photo was taken because they were trying to protect the younger kids. I like to imagine that Moody is the only surviving older Order member and he had to watch his peers die one by one and then had to watch as so many of those kids they died trying to protect were killed themselves
Soooo. I can see this working if well justified. There is a line that does justify it in canon, actually- "[...] look, I canโ€™t promise no oneโ€™s going to get hurt, nobody can promise that, but weโ€™re much better off than we were last time, you werenโ€™t in the Order then, you donโ€™t understand, last time we wereย outnumberedย twenty to one by the Death Eaters and they were picking us off one by one...โ€
Voldemort would most likely send his Death Eaters after the best and strongest Order members first, even though they were more likely to take down many of his followers- it's not like he didn't have the numbers. BUT I'm afraid it's a little unrealistic. The weakest fighters in a fight to the death are those who get killed first even with protection.
Just for funsies, though, I'll give you my personal headcanon of the Order members' rough ages. I'm usually flexible if they're changed by a couple of years, but the generations should be kept.
This is the list of confirmed Order of the Phoenix members in the First Wizarding War:
Albus Dumbledore
Aberforth Dumbledore
Alastor Moody
Arabella Figg
Dedalus Diggle
Elphias Doge
Emmeline Vance
Mundungus Fletcher
Rubeus Hagrid
Sturgis Podmore
Severus Snape
Sirius Black
Remus Lupin
Peter Pettigrew (who turns spy for the Death Eaters in 1980)
All these people survive the war. Then we also have:
James Potter
Lily Evans Potter
Fabian Prewett
Gideon Prewett
Frank Longbottom
Alice Longbottom
Edgar Bones
Benji Fenwick
Caradoc Dearborn
Dorcas Meadowes
Marlene McKinnon
Now. The only girl confirmed to be one of Lily's classmates is Mary McDonald and she's not part of the Order (and I choose to believe that she wasn't; she sympathised, maybe, but I like the headcanon that she's so scarred by Mulciber and Avery's bullying - and that the event that Lily references to Severus is not the only time they use Dark Magic on her - that she wants nothing to do with the fight). I am maybe one of the two (2) people with a mild appreciation for BlackKinnon, and I don't mind Marlene as someone in the same age bracket as them (but I can also see her being older). She is murdered along her entire family, though, and it's unclear whether she was a mother, a sister, or a daughter. I will say that some of their Hogwarts years overlapped.
Dorcas I find way less likely. She was killed by Voldemort himself - the man wouldn't have bothered if she wasn't an Amelia Bones-level witch at least, which means she was mighty, which means she most likely wasn't twenty-one. I like to think that she was an Auror, or a Ministry high-ranking employee with sound principles that just would not bend to the infiltration of the DEs in the Ministry or to Barty Crouch Snr's ruthlessness.
Frank and Alice Longbottom are the same, to me. They're older than the Marauders, I would make them (just like Dorcas) around Bellatrix's age, maybe even older. That makes them around 30yrs old in 1981. Which means they would have had a full decade or more to become the most respected Aurors in the Wizarding World, so well known that what happened to them sparked major outrage, the kind that led to a manhunt for their torturers, and the sentencing of a pleading nineteen-year-old boy. (Of course, Barty jr was guilty, but they didn't know that, didn't know just how loyal to Voldemort he truly was. The Lestranges sentencing - an old wizarding family, a Lestrange had even been Minister for Magic - was clearly one sparked by public outrage. People were crying out for their blood.)
The Prewetts were Molly's older brothers, so they were way older than the Marauders. They were also killed by a group of Death Eaters led by Antonin Dolohov after what appears to have been a truly brutal fight, so nope. They weren't the Fred and George types of the Marauders Era (also. the Marauders were that!)
Edgar Bones had a wife and children and was considered to be one of the best of the era, so I doubt he was as young as the Fantastic Four. We really don't know enough about Caradoc Dearborn or Benji Fenwick to say, but I somehow doubt it.
Of those who survived.
We know that Albus, Aberforth, Moody, Elphias Doge, Mundungus, and Arabella Figg are all way older than the Marauders, and I've always pictured Dedalus Diggle as a middle aged man (but we only know he's tiny and excitable, so it could go either way). Sturgis Podmore's description fits someone that could have been in the Marauder's year or maybe slightly older, but still one of their peers.
So, really, the green-faced youths that fought with the Order were: the four Marauders, Lily, maybe Marlene and Emmeline Vance (who isn't even listed as fighting with them in the First War, only the second), and maybe Sturgis Podmore. On the side of the Death Eaters: Avery, Mulciber, Barty Crouch jr (who was two/three years younger than the Marauders!!!), Regulus Black and of course Severus Snape.
And, no. Evan Rosier's age is never disclosed, and since he brutally maims fucking Alastor Moody - possibly the greatest Auror ever - I'm inclined to believe that he was at least Bellatrix's age (so 8-9 years older than the Marauders). In my personal headcanon he's even a tad older - but no less cuntier for it. My boy serves as much cunt at 27 as he did at 17 (<3).

The Riddle of Tom Riddle: Part 7/7
(Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6)
The Rise and Fall of Lord Voldemort (the second coming)
The final installment will explain some of Voldemort's odd behavior in the books themselves โ€” from the ludicrous plan that was Goblet of Fire, to why he wasn't involved in the war and what he actually was trying to accomplish.
Alongside that, I want to make note of a few other interesting facets of Voldemort's character by the time we meet him in the books.
What the Hell was he Planning in GOF?
So, a lot of fans poke fun at Tom for the over-convoluted mess that was GOF. Because, really, there are so many moving parts here and so many failure points... and there's literally no reason to wait the whole year when Barty (Moody) could just pluck Harry whenever. I mean, it would've been better to just kidnap him on one of the chances Barty had access to Harry alone throughout the year, why the wait?
Well, I believe the plan in book 4, was not Voldemort's plan, but Barty's. And I have some evidence of what Voldemort had planned:
There was a pause, and then the man called Wormtail spoke again. โ€œMy Lord, may I ask how long we are going to stay here?โ€ โ€œA week,โ€ said the cold voice. โ€œPerhaps longerโ€ฆ
(Goblet of Fire, page 23)
Early on in the book, before Barty returns to his service, Tom makes the above comment. He isn't planning on staying in Riddle Manor for long. He's talking about a week, maybe a month, not a whole year. Whatever plan he had to retrieve Harry was not a year-long plan at the beginning of the book.
โ€œBecause, fool, at this very moment wizards are pouring into the country from all over the world, and every meddler from the Ministry of Magic will be on duty, on the watch for signs of unusual activity, checking and double-checking identities. They will be obsessed with security, lest the Muggles notice anything. So we wait.โ€
(Goblet of Fire, page 24)
And the reason for this few weeks' wait is the World Cup. Voldemort planned on waiting until the Quidditch World Cup was over and then had Pettigrew kidnap Harry somehow before Hogwarts (this conversation is in early August).
โ€œI have my reasons for using the boy, as I have already explained to you, and I will use no other. I have waited thirteen years. A few more months will make no difference. As for the protection surrounding the boy, I believe my plan will be effective.
(Goblet of Fire, page 26)
And he makes it clear the plan is to use Harry for the ritual, but he's still talking about a few months max of delay, not a whole year. So what changed?
Barty did. Barty came along after the Quidditch World Cup and changed the plan to retrieve Harry. And why would Barty take this long?
Well, I have a post in the works about Barty Crouch Jr. that would explain just that and more. But for now, what I can say, is that the GOF plan was more Barty's than Voldemort's.
As for Voldemort's reasons for using Harry in the ritual, well, there are two reasons here:
Lily's blood protection - which Voldemort wishes to circumvent
His unhealthy obsession with Harry Potter that I talk about more in this post.
Objective in the War
So, as I covered here, Voldemort wasn't really taking an active part in the Second Wizarding World (if he was Umbridge wouldn't have been able to strut around with Slytherin's locket). So if he isn't involved in the war, what is he doing? Why did he start the war?
Well, in the first war, Voldemort's objective was magical experimentation and discovery, in the second his goals are quite different. It's seen in how much more chaotic the war is. Voldemort's goal is so much more personal and emotional to him, that he doesn't care how much collateral damage his Death Eaters cause in the second war. Because of the second war, Tom is less mentally stable than the first one. But not due to some Dark Magic bullshit, but due to his actual psychological state.
As I already covered in the past posts in this series, Tom is a perfectionist. Tom Marvolo Riddle doesn't do failure. He had 12 NWETS, all Os, he was prefect and head boy. Saying he doesn't like failing is an understatement. Honestly, I'd say failure is the one thing this man fears and hates more than death.
And what is his one failure in his perfect track record of Os and victories?
It's Harry Potter.
Harry Potter, whose very moniker: "The Boy Who Lived" mocks this very failure. Failing to kill Harry Potter.
This leads us to what Voldemort is doing in the second war: Attempting to kill Harry Potter like nothing else exists. Which leads us to the next section:
Obsession With Harry Potter
I don't feel like people realize just how obsessed Voldemort is with Harry. How much Harry is literally the only thing Voldemort cares about in the second war. More than his Death Eaters, more than the ministry, even more than his life.
Throughout his resurrection scene, we have a few interesting moments, I'm not going to cover all of them, but I wanna talk about these two:
โ€œA little break,โ€ said Voldemort, the slit-like nostrils dilating with excitement, โ€œa little pause . . . That hurt, didnโ€™t it, Harry? You donโ€™t want me to do that again, do you?โ€
(Goblet of Fire, page 661)
โ€œWe are not playing hide-and-seek, Harry,โ€ said Voldemortโ€™s soft, cold voice, drawing nearer, as the Death Eaters laughed. โ€œYou cannot hide from me. Does this mean you are tired of our duel? Does this mean that you would prefer me to finish it now, Harry? Come out, Harry . . . come out and play, then . . . it will be quick . . . it might even be painless . . . I would not know . . . I have never died. . . .
(Goblet of Fire, page 662)
Both of these are moments I call: "playing with his food". He's playing with Harry, toying with him, and actually seems to honestly enjoy himself playing around and torturing and terrifying Harry. This is interesting because Voldemort doesn't toy around with his enemies, like, ever. He tortures and gloats in front of his Death Eaters, but not in front of enemies, with enemies he does the logical thing โ€” try to kill them as quickly as possible.
Except with Harry. Why?
Because Harry is different. He's a whole different category for Voldemort.
Voldemort doesn't really see Harry as a person, not really, he sees him as a failure. His own failure. Harry Potter, to Voldemort, is that one slightly wrong answer in an exam that lost him the two points he needed for that perfect O. Harry is a stain on his perfect record, and therefore Voldemort treats him as such, and not as an actual person.
โ€œDo nothing!โ€ Voldemort shrieked to the Death Eaters, and Harry saw his red eyes wide with astonishment at what was happening, saw him fighting to break the thread of light still connecting his wand with Harryโ€™s; Harry held onto his wand more tightly, with both hands, and the golden thread remained unbroken. โ€œDo nothing unless I command you!โ€ Voldemort shouted to the Death Eaters.
โ€ฆ.
Voldemort who looked astonished, and almost fearful. . . .
(Goblet of Fire, page 664)
This is when Voldemort starts taking Harry seriously. I mentioned he didn't really believe the prophecy, well, he didn't until the graveyard when his and Harry's wands met. That fear, that's real, this is when Harry becomes a threat and not only a failure.
Additionally, we see here something Voldemort will continue doing throughout the war. Harry โ€” well, killing Harry โ€” is the only thing Voldemort cares about in the Second War, but it's more than that. because Harry is his failure only he is allowed to kill Harry. He doesn't care who kills Dumbledore, but only he is allowed to kill Harry even in the later books.
In OOTP, what is Voldemort doing? He's sending Death Eaters to retrieve the prophecy. Why? Because now he knows it and Harry is a real threat. It's not about the war, it's all about Harry and the prophecy connecting them. He hopes it'll tell him how to kill Harry.
In HBP, Voldemort isn't really present either. He doesn't care what his Death Eaters do, he isn't expecting Malfoy to succeed in killing Dumbledore. He only cares about figuring out what happened with his and Harry's wands because Voldemort needs to be the one to kill Harry Potter with his own wand, otherwise, he wouldn't really be rectifying his failure. In his mind.
โ€œMy Lord, the Order of the Phoenix intends to move Harry Potter from his current place of safety on Saturday next, at nightfall.โ€ The interest around the table sharpened palpably; Some stiffened, others fidgeted, all gazing at Snape and Voldemort. โ€œSaturday . . . at nightfall,โ€ repeated Voldemort. His red eyes fastened upon Snapeโ€™s black ones with such intensity that some of the watchers looked away, apparently fearful that they themselves would be scorched by the ferocity of the gaze.
(Deathly Hollows, page 9)
Even when the war is in full swing by Deathly Hollows, Voldemort doesn't care for the war. He wasn't even in Britain for most of it. But when it comes to Harry Potter, a chance to kill Harry potter, for that Voldemort would grace his followers with his presence. But if it has nothing to do with Harry, he just won't be interested.
Voldemort looked up at the slowly revolving body as he went on, โ€œ I shall attend to the boy in person. There have been too many mistakes where Harry Potter is concerned. Some of them have been my own. That Potter lives is due more to my errors than to his triumphs.โ€ The company around the table watched Voldemort apprehensively, each of them, but his or her expression, afraid that they might be blamed for Harry Potterโ€™s continued existence. Voldemort, however, seemed to be speaking more to himself than to any of them, still addressing the unconscious body above him. โ€œI have been careless, and so have been thwarted by luck and chance, those wreckers of all but the best-laid plans. But I know better now. I understand those things that I did not understand before. I must be the one to kill Harry Potter, and I shall be.โ€
(Deathly Hollows, page 11)
here, again, Voldemort explains what I just said. He sees Harry as his failure, his error, his mistake, And Tom Riddle despises nothing more than a mistake.
And he explains why that, the fact Harry is alive is due to his mistakes, that he has to be the one to kill him. Voldemort doesn't care about winning the war, or the ministry, or his followers โ€” he just needs to cast a killing curse at Harry and kill him. To rectify that one mistake.
More, Rowle, or shall we end it and feed you to Nagini? Lord Voldemort is not sure that he will forgive this time. . . . You called me back for this, to tell me that Harry Potter has escaped again? Draco, give Rowle another taste of our displeasure. . . . Do it, or feel my wrath yourself!โ€
(Deathly Hollows, page 152)
Again, Voldemort isn't in Britain, but when his followers informed him they had Harry Potter, he dropped everything and arrived in Britain. Because killing Harry is literally the only thing that matters to him by this point.
โ€œGive me Harry Potter,โ€ said Voldemortโ€™s voice, โ€œand none shall be harmed. Give me Harry Potter, and I shall leave the school untouched. Give me Harry Potter, and you should be rewarded. โ€œYou have until midnight.โ€
(Deathly Hollows, page 516)
And we see it again, nothing matters, no victory matters, besides killing Harry Potter.
โ€œMy wand of yew did everything of which I asked it, Severus, except to kill Harry Potter. Twice it failed. Ollivander told me under torture of the twin cores, told me to take anotherโ€™s wand. I did so, but Luciusโ€™s wand shattered upon meeting Potterโ€™s.โ€
(Deathly Hollows, page 553)
Here he describes what he's been doing for the entirety of books 6 and 7. Trying to find a wand so he could kill Harry with it. Because that's the only thing that mattered to him. It's why he kidnapped and tortured Ollivanders. It's why he traveled to Germany to track down the Elder Wand. It's why he's killing Severus in this above scene.
And here again, there is an emphasis on failure, mistakes, that his wand failed him. Because that's what Harry is to him โ€” a failure.
Because he wants to kill Harry himself with a wand. This obsession is the thing fueling all his actions in the Second War.
And still, Voldemort and Harry looked at each other, and now Voldemort tilted his head a little to the side, considering the boy standing before him, and a singularly mirthless smile curled the lipless mouth. โ€œHarry Potter,โ€ he said very softly His voice might have been part of the splitting fire. โ€œThe Boy Who Lived.โ€ None of the Death Eaters moved. They were waiting: Everything was waiting. Hagrid was struggling, and Bellatrix was panting, and Harry thought inexplicably of Ginny, and her blazing look, and the feel of her lips on hisโ€” Voldemort had raised his wand. His head was still tilted to one side, like a curious child, wondering what would happen if he proceeded.
(Deathly Hollows, page 593)
And when he finally does get what he wants, he's happy, curious, and warry. He doesn't fully believe Harry would actually die (which he doesn't).
I just love this description, his head a little to the side like a curious child. Because he is childish in a way at this moment. He finally can rectify the one stain on his perfect record and he could barely believe it really is happening.
Unlike in the graveyard, here he isn't gloating. Contrary to his words, about how Harry only survived by luck, he does fear Harry. Well, his survival. Voldemort actually does believe the prophecy by this point, that there's something more than his own failure stopping him from killing Harry โ€” and keeping him dead.
Because it's easy to believe, almost comforting even, that it's not just his mistakes.
โ€œYeah, it did,โ€ said Harry. โ€œYouโ€™re right. But before you try to kill me, Iโ€™d advise you to think about what youโ€™ve done. . . . Think, and try for some remorse, Riddle. . . .โ€ โ€œWhat is this?โ€ Of all the things that Harry had said to him, beyond any revelation or taunt, nothing had shocked Voldemort like this. Harry saw his pupils contact to thin slits, saw the skin around his eyes whiten. โ€œItโ€™s your one last chance,โ€ said Harry, โ€œitโ€™s all youโ€™ve got left. . . . Iโ€™ve seen what youโ€™ll be otherwise. . . . Be a man . . . try . . . Try for some remorse. . . .โ€ โ€œYou dareโ€”?โ€ said Voldemort again. โ€œYes, I dare,โ€ said Harry, โ€œbecause Dumbledoreโ€™s last plan hasnโ€™t backfired on me at all. Itโ€™s backfired on you, Riddle.โ€ Voldemortโ€™s hand was trembling on the Elder Wand, and Harry gripped Dracoโ€™s very tightly. The moment, he knew, was seconds away.
(Deathly Hollows, page 625)
Right before his death, Harry gloats at him about his mistakes, and how wrong he got it all.
And there is nothing Tom Riddle hates more.
Other Notes
Now, I want to cover a few other smaller notes about Voldemort's character that just didn't really fit anywhere else:
Voldemort in the books almost never shouts. He is described as speaking: "softly" because he doesn't need to be loud. He's intimidating just by his presence alone, when he speaks, everyone shuts up and listens:
โ€œWe are not playing hide-and-seek, Harry,โ€ said Voldemortโ€™s soft, cold voice, drawing nearer, as the Death Eaters laughed.
(Goblet of Fire, page 662)
2. As I mentioned before in this series, Voldemort is sentimental. His own past and family, even when they hated him, he cares. He cares so much that his father's abandonment still hurts decades later:
โ€œYou stand, Harry Potter, upon the remains of my late father,โ€ he hissed softly. โ€œA Muggle and a fool . . . very like your dear mother. But they both had their uses, did they not? Your mother died to defend you as a child . . . and I killed my father, and see how useful he has proved himself, in death. . . .โ€ Voldemort laughed again. Up and down he paced, looking all around him as he walked, and the snake continued to circle in the grass. โ€œYou see that house upon the hillside, Potter? My father lived there. My mother, a witch who lived here in this village, fell in love with him. But he abandoned her when she told him what she was. . . . He didnโ€™t like magic, my father . . . โ€œHe left her and returned to his Muggle parents before I was even born, Potter, and she died giving birth to me, leaving me to be raised in a Muggle orphanage . . . but I vowed to find him . . . I revenged myself upon him, that fool who gave me his name . . . Tom Riddle. . . .โ€ Still he paced, his red eyes darting from grave to grave. โ€œListen to me, reliving family history . . .โ€ he said quietly, โ€œwhy, I am growing quite sentimental. . . . But look, Harry! My true family returns. . . .โ€
(Goblet of Fire, page 646)
3. He loves to monologue. I think he just honestly enjoyed hearing himself talk:
โ€œI see you all, whole and healthy, with your powers intact โ€” such prompt appearances! โ€” and I ask myself . . . why did this band of wizards never come to the aid of their master, to whom they swore eternal loyalty?โ€ No one spoke. No one moved except Wormtail, who was upon the ground, still sobbing over his bleeding arm. โ€œAnd I answer myself,โ€ whispered Voldemort, โ€œthey must have believed me broken, they thought I was gone. They slipped back among my enemies, and they pleaded innocence, and ignorance, and bewitchment. . . . โ€œAnd then I ask myself, but how could they have believed I would not rise again? They, who knew the steps I took, long ago, to guard myself against mortal death? They, who had seen proofs of the immensity of my power in the times when I was mightier than any wizard living? โ€œAnd I answer myself, perhaps they believed a still greater power could exist, one that could vanquish even Lord Voldemort . . . perhaps they now pay allegiance to another . . . perhaps that champion of commoners, of Mudbloods and Muggles, Albus Dumbledore?โ€ At the mention of Dumbledoreโ€™s name, the members of the circle stirred, and some muttered and shook their heads. Voldemort ignored them. โ€œIt is a disappointment to me . . . I confess myself disappointed. . . .โ€
(Goblet of Fire, page 648)
Also I can't help but find this scene funny. "And I ask myself" โ€” "and I answer myself", Tom's just having fun toying with his followers and their fear here (pulse being dramatic). He, in general, does have a sense of fun. He even makes stupid puns:
โ€œI knew that to achieve this โ€” it is an old piece of Dark Magic, the potion that revived me tonight โ€” I would need three powerful ingredients. Well, one of them was already at hand, was it not, Wormtail? Flesh given by a servant. . . .
(Goblet of Fire, page 656)
He's way funnier than we give him credit (and dorkier).
4. I mentioned he didn't plan to truly live forever in a past post, after all, if he did, he would've hidden his Horcruxes better. And yet, he despises the very idea of death:
โ€œYou do not seek to kill me, Dumbledore?โ€ called Voldemort, his scarlet eyes narrowed over the top of the shield. โ€œAbove such brutality, are you?โ€ โ€œWe both know that there are other ways of destroying a man, Tom,โ€ Dumbledore said calmly, continuing to walk toward Voldemort as though he had not a fear in the world, as though nothing had happened to interrupt his stroll up the hall. โ€œMerely taking your life would not satisfy me, I admit โ€”โ€ โ€œThere is nothing worse than death, Dumbledore!โ€ snarled Voldemort.
(Order of the Pheonix, page 812)
Voldemort is still, at this moment, is still the orphan at the bomb shelters who doesn't want to die. Death is the worst thing to him because death means everything is over, that he had his chance at life and that's it. Death is the end of the road. It's the ultimate failing, the ultimate loss โ€” something to overcome. At least in Voldemort's mind. Because Tom doesn't do failure. His hatred of death is exasperated by his perfectionism and because of how he sees death.
But even so, he made sure to leave an opening, a chance for him to die if he ever desired it.
Conclusions
The only thing Voldemort cared about in the Second War was killing Harry. Killing Harry Potter was the end goal that motivated all his actions.
He's a perfectionist more than anything else. Dumbledore said Tom feared death the most, but I disagree. What he feared most id failure โ€” his own failure โ€” death was an extension of that, in a way.
Voldemort doesn't need to raise his voice, the fact he speaks softly is a testament to how terrifying he is to others.
He's quite sentimental. I mentioned it before and I'll mention it again.
He has a sense of humor and actually loves to talk and hear his own voice.

Unpopular opinion
Ron and/or Hermione should have died in the deathly hallows. And I say this as someone who loves these characters (probably Hermione more than Ron), but here me out
Now let's be fucking real, I really like ron, but he really wasn't skilled or prepared enough to fight in a war against voldemort, be it magically or mentally. And that's ok! He's still 17, he's not meant to be fighting a war. And to some degree he probably knew that the chances of him actually making it were pretty slim too. But he still stuck with Harry anyways coz there's no way he was going to let his best friend go through with this alone. Because that's who ron is, he'd rather die fighting beside his best friend, for his family, his muggleborn gf and for the cause than play it safe and hide.
Now coming to Hermione, things get a tad trickier here. Yes, she is very skilled and powerful and quick on her feet. But is she powerful enough to take on an army of adult DEs who've trained for years and have experience from the first wizarding war? To win against the darkest wizard who ever lived, who's said to be worse than Grindelwald, who's the most powerful wizard in the whole world after Dumbledore? No, I'd say she isn't. Because she's also fucking 17, she's not even done with school yet. But I think she'd live longer than Ron, or that there's a better chance of her making it out alive. But if she did die it would be extra heartbreaking coz a) Harry (and the readers) just lost 2 of the people who had been there from the very beginning, b) Hermione's parents would live on in Australia, not remembering that they had a daughter, not knowing that their daughter gave her life in hopes of saving her friend and creating a better world.
I majorly have 2 specific reasons for being this sadistic. The first one is the fact that the plot dumbs down it's main villain and his followers just to make the kids win. Voldemort (during Harry's time) is probably the dumbest villain ever written, he doesn't live up to his hype. People have already discussed how stupid his gof plan was. In ootp, during the DoM fight Lucius says that voldemort can't come get the prophecy himself coz the ministry is filled with ppl and he would risk revealing himself. But it's possible for 6 mostly dumb teenagers and an army of DEs, (who hv just escaped azkaban and are sought after by the ministry) to enter in undetected? Doesn't ๐Ÿ‘ make ๐Ÿ‘ any ๐Ÿ‘ sense. The supposedly feared DEs who were trained by voldemort himself can't win against a group of teenagers. It's surprising how long it takes them to take the kids down in the DoM battle. The thing is though, this is out of character for ALL of them. It seems like they were dumbed down just so the MCs could make it out alive. Voldemort during the first WW started out as absolutely no one to having the highest class of the wizarding society obeying his every command. The whole wizarding world was so afraid of him that they wouldn't even say his name. The DEs picked out member after member of the original ootp, mostly coz they were outnumbered but also coz they're fucking death eaters. And ur telling me these guys can't fight kids? Pathetic. Also it doesn't make sense that most of the adults from the first war are dead but all the kids live. Like did the war become safer or sm shit? Instead i would have loved it if the trio got away with things in the first few books, but then realised what a war against voldemort actually means later on. But they won't back down, and they'll still stick with their friend and fight for each other and the cause anyways, and that vil have real, legitimate consequences
Now, the second reason is that it would have been an amazing but heartbreaking callback to book 1. Ron sacrifices himself in a game of chess and Hermione says that there are more important things than books and cleverness, like friendship and bravery. Ron's line of "It's you who has to go on Harry, I know it! Not me, not Hermione, you!" would have also come full circle. Back then they were still 11, so they could still get their happy ending. Now they're in a real war and the stakes are higher, but they'll stick to what they started anyways. Ron sacrifices himself so the other 2 can move forwards, Hermione's intelligence gets her further but she still needs to part with Harry. Harry needs to leave them behind and face voldemort alone because that's how it was always meant to be
And finally, it would have given us a more bittersweet ending to the series instead of that vanilla 'all is well' epilogue. Harry has lost almost every one he loved. But there's still life, there's still hope, and he lives by cherishing their memories and making their sacrifice have meaning. Kinda like the ending of the hunger games. Ik this is a kids book, but Harry Potter as a series is incredibly deep and deals with a lot of fucked up shit, so I think it could handle it if it was written well.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk

Knock on the door
(James Potter / Regulus Black | 529 words)
For @jegulus-microfic prompt: Smoke
The last time James ever saw Regulus was in the middle of a battle. It was only for a second. He saw the familiar dark curls, that he could never forget. And then Regulus turned around and James could see the fire in those stormy eyes. One second, he was there and one he was running somewhere else. They were already broken up by then. They both picked their sides. Regulus took the mark and James joined the Order. The war split them up. It was the first time he saw Regulus after two years and also the last time ever.
Several months after this battle one horrible morning James read the article in Daily Prophet and his word crushed down. Because Regulus was pronounced dead. His Regulus. His star. Was gone. They were already broken up but somehow James wished he could save him. That he would make him change his mind and run away with him exactly as they talked about. But Regulus was gone, and James was left alone shattered.
He still feels the smoke of that battle in his nose. He still sees those beautiful eyes. He still misses him.
That battle was the last time he saw Regulus until now. And he isn't sure if it's not a dream. He was woken up by the knock on his door. It had to be only someone he knows because of the wards. When he rushed to open the door in fear that someone is hurt his heart stopped.
Because here he is. Regulus. Standing at his door. Looking exhausted and beaten up. But breathing. Regulus. Breathing. On his doorstep. And it doesn't make sense.
โ€œHey. I...โ€ Regulus says and oh how James missed his voice. โ€œI'm sorry to wake you. I need a place to stay, and you were the only one I could think of.โ€ Regulus says fidgeting with his hands nervously. James isn't sure what to do. His brain didn't yet catch up. โ€œI did something and well...โ€
โ€œThey said you were dead,โ€ James whispers because that's the only thought in his mind.
โ€œYeah, I had to disappear for a while. I can explain. Will you let me explain, please?โ€ Regulus pleads and James was never able to say no to him. Not really.
James watches him, trying to make his brain function. โ€œYou are more beautiful than I remember.โ€ it's the thing he says out loud. It's probably a stupid thing to say but true, nonetheless. James slowly reaches out his hand. He needs to touch him, to know he is real. Regulus seems to understand so he holds very still.
If this is a dream James probably won't survive waking up. He can't lose him again. Not when Regulus is standing here looking real.
When his hand finally touches Regulusโ€™ arm, and he feels the strong, hot and very alive body under his fingertips he doesn't even try to fight the tears as they spill from his eyes. He pulls the boy towards him because after almost three years he can do that.
โ€œI'm sorry, Jamie. But I will explain everything.โ€ Regulus whispers as he buries his face into James' chest.

One last time | words: 1003 | angst, death.
the horcruxes. They've been haunting them down since Regulus Black came into the order meeting, soaking wet and told them about Voldemort's horcruxes.
This is the last battle. After this, the war would be over. All they need to do is survive it.
People were shouting and shooting spells everywhere, James send the last spell to the deatheater he was dueling when suddenly, there was a green light on his left, coming to his way. Before James could even process what was happening, a person pushed James out the way and the green light hit them square in the chest.
James sent a spell to the deatheater that cast that spell without a second thought and apparated, taking the person with him.
As soon as they landed, Regulus fell on to James. They were in a little meadow, where Regulus and him agreed to get married and build a home after this war.
James stumbled backwards as the weight of Regulus fell on him. Slowly, James set Regulus on the grass, shaking slightly. The spell was a green light. James knew what it meant. But.. but it can't be. Regulus can't be- he can't- he-
"Reg?" James choked out, his voice breaking. "Regulus, love, please- please wake up" please, don't leave me please. James tried to shake Regulus awake but the boy remain lifeless in his arms.
Regulus's heart was no longer beating, James is sure his heart stopped beating too. Regulus was dead. Oh Regulus was- no no no no no no-
James thinks this is worse than dying, James was close to dying multiple times while fighting in the war. Yet this is beyond any kind of pain.
Please, he thinks.
Please come back, call me an idiot, yell at me, hex me, curse me, hurt me, kiss me, tell me you love me. Please, anything, just one last time. Please-
"Give him back" James' voice was barely a wispier "give him back to me, please" he asked to whoever was listening, the gods above or whoever.
The sun was going down, it was almost dark. James hope the sun will never come back up again. No sun should be allowed to shine without Regulus.
"give him back to me, give him back." James repeated the words over and over again. He doesn't know why he's doing it, it's no use he knows. But he wants his love back, his star, his whole world, he wants him back.
________________________________
James doesn't know much of what happened, he knows someone found him and Regulus. He doesn't remember what happened after. They had funerals, lots of them. But James doesn't remember much of it. He attended some of them but he didn't cry. Not a single tear.
Regulus's funeral came around but James doesn't know what he's supposed to feel. All he felt was empty. Sirius was weeping in Remus' arms, his boyfriend was softly whispering in his ears.
James didn't sob or cry, he just stared blankly into nowhere. They had won the war, Voldemort was dead. They saved the world but James lost his. For James, he lost the war the moment his world fell into his arms
Maybe in another universe he'll still have his world in his arms, sitting on the couch in there beautiful home. They would get married, get a cat and have kids, just like they said they would.
Maybe in another universe, war wouldn't exist, maybe they would be muggles. But no matter what universe it is, James knows for sure that Regulus would always be his. In every universe and every lifetime.
_______________________________
James laid down on their bed, they were just here that morning before the battle. Regulus was laughing at something James said and calling him an idiot. Oh James would do anything to hear that laugh one more time.
The sun goes down and rise up again. But James never did, he went down and never came back up. James didn't have his world to shine for anymore. James doesn't think he'll shine again.
Every day James would come out to their little meadow and wait for his star to come back, he imagine one day Regulus would, he would come back to James, smiling wildly, and they would make up for the days they missed together. But of course, it never happened.
And every night James would talk to his star, telling him how much he misses him and tells him about his day. The star only shines a little brighter in response. But James smiles everytime it did.
Time passed, days to weeks, weeks to months, months to years. But James never did fell in love again, he never felt truly happy, never stopped waiting for his love, ever again.
________________________________
Centuries passed and on a sunny day, a boy that smiles so bright like the sun, and a boy that is beautiful like the stars, walked hand in hand. They came across a little meadow with a house near by. It all felt familiar, they stare at it for a while, and they knew.
"This is it isn't it?" The sun boy asked, grinning.
"We don't even know if it's for sale!" the star boy replied.
"Well I can offer them as much money as they want." The taller boy replied with a shrug.
The other boy just huff a laugh and not long after, they were living in a home with a little meadow near by.
What they'll never know is that centuries ago, two lovers just like them dreamed of the life they were living. But never got it, at least not in that lifetime.
--- In every universe, every lifetime, the sun and the star found each other and falls in love. ---

What if Barty Crouch Jr. was the reason why Sirius Black didn't go completely insane in Azkaban?
Not that Barty suddenly decided to betray Voldemort and join the Order but Sirius was the only connection to Regulus that was left. Like a memory or a ghost.
And Barty could not afford to lose that, to lose those precious memories of Regulus to dementors.
So he has spent every night reassuring Sirius from his prison cell across from Black.
"You did not betray them. It was the rat. You are not crazy. Regulus, James, Lily and everyone else would be proud of you. You are not a monster."
Unfortunately, Barty could not save himself while also protecting Sirius. He didn't regret his decision, tho. It was the only one he couldn't afford to regret.

I really wish the Harry Potter books were more for adult audience because from the things I find the most fascinating we get so little.
I would love to read more about the political system, how the wizengemot works in practice in daily basis or the clashed between the inherited and elected seat owners.
We know so little of the purebloods lifestyle except that it's more similar to what we may call english victorian aristocraticy. Also so many fans forget that while blood purity is important to most of the families, classism is very much there as well. Pureblood or not there are many families at the bottom of the food chain purely based on the fact that they don't rotate the money or political scene.
The allure of the Black family was always their own supposed self importance and ten generations of traditions were for me. I don't want to see Narcissa running around in muggle attire in fanfic because that ice queen who kills you with her gaze and elegant silence would never do that. Her imagine is just as much her weapon as her wand.
I wish we have gotten more of Dumbledore's and Voldemort's political chess play. Rather than only obscure notes from the first wizarding war. I want to believe that these two people are important to their followers not because the book said so but because they are indeed strategic geniuses.
I want to see the light and dark side blurred into grey, certainly more than "good" and "bad" people. I don't the author to tell me whom should I judge just write them as humans, someone being a blood purist doesn't mean they are rotten 24/7 they can have families, hobbies just as someone who doesn't believe in blood purity can be a nasty price of work in other parts of their lives. I want to see the consequences of war on both sides, because there are no winners in wars only survivors.

regulus becoming a death eater at sixteen is something that i have a hard time wrapping my mind around, mostly because i can't imagine him doing a lot between joining and dying
the only other case that we know for sure of this happening is draco malfoy, but under very different circumstances. draco was marked after nine death eaters, including his father, were arrested, and tasked with the seemingly impossible task of killing dumbledore. the main purpose of this was to torment his family and, later on, ensure his collaboration
i think something similar to this secondary goal might be involved in recruiting soldiers so young
at sixteen, your brain is not fully formed and it's hard to see nuance, hard to structure arguments, you don't know enough of the world and it's easier to get attached into worldviews or political parties or philosophies or cults
i think that, to voldemort, ensuring the collaboration of these boys when they were at their most eager would guarantee their loyalty later on
because, realistically, there's not much he could have done with teenagers inside hogwarts. spy on dumbledore? he would know. have them sneaking out at night to hogsmead and side apparating to go kill some muggles and then be like oh sorry gotta comeback i have charms in the morning
so young death eaters โ€” in 'padfoot returns' sirius lists some names he knew who were friends in hogwarts and later were arrested or killed โ€” would have little use in the killing and torturing, but they still could be potential recruiters, feeding discourse into their colleagues, radicalizing other children, creating the illusion for other people that they are already winning and there's no point in fighting against it
so for the specific case of regulus, i can see him growing up with parents who believe in pureblood supremacy, his brother gets chastised for acting out and he doesn't want to be like sirius, does he? everybody in slytherin is talking about the dark lord and his oldest cousin who is so smart says he is the greatest wizard to ever exist โ€” and he falls into the trap
he's obsessed, he's only sixteen, he's got his parents approval for his politics (what does a sixteen years old knows of politics?), sirius left and he feels lonely, he fills up a wall with paper cuts of everything that's it's being talked about the dark lord, because the dark lord is all people talk about these days
finally, he's attractive to voldemort because of his name. he must be reasonably smart. and bellatrix recommends him. that's it
i can lay it all in a way that makes sense to me, not only from what we know of regulus, but also from what voldemort might do as a military leader. ultimately, i believe sirius was right in assuming regulus was unimportant to voldemort, that's something i've always assumed from 'kreacher's tale,' volunteering a house elf was his first chance of being properly useful and that was why he was so eager to do it
(he died in '79, either still on school or in the first semester after graduating, not older than eighteen)
note 1: barty crouch jr was described as a teenager at the time of trial, later in 1981, meaning he was also recruited very young. he would have been attractive to voldemort for the possibility of spying on crouch sr, and he was one of the most fanatical followers
note 2: it's safe to assume regulus became a death eater not long after sirius ran away and while i think the aftermath played a role in his mental state leading up to that point, putting the blame on sirius doesn't make any sense because there were many other factors, sirius was right in leaving a place where felt unsafe and he had no responsibility to calculate all of the possible repercussions of his actions in influencing his already blood supremacist brother of joining a cult

@hprecfest Day 16: a fic that made you laugh
Inhuman Resources, by Asenora | @saintsenara
An Umbridge-centric fic filled with a very dark sort of humor. And also a really intriguing exploration of her psyche and the question of why someone who shares the Death Eaters' ideas might not have ended up joining them - but told in a way that wholeheartedly embraces the absurdity of it all. Seriously, go find out what the Death Eaters think of everyone's least favorite character. You won't regret it.
