What’s It Like to Work in NASA’s Mission Control Center?
In the latest installment of our First Woman graphic novel series, we see Commander Callie Rodriguez embark on the next phase of her trailblazing journey, as she leaves the Moon to take the helm at Mission Control.
Tumblr media
Flight directors work in Mission Control to oversee operations of the International Space Station and Artemis missions to the Moon. They have a unique, overarching perspective focused on integration between all the systems that make a mission a success – flight directors have to learn a little about a lot.
Diane Dailey and Chloe Mehring were selected as flight directors in 2021. They’ll be taking your questions about what it’s like to lead teams of flight controllers, engineers, and countless professionals, both agencywide and internationally, in an Answer Time session on Nov. 28, 2023, from noon to 1 p.m. EST (9-10 a.m. PST) here on our Tumblr!
Like Callie, how did their unique backgrounds and previous experience, prepare them for this role? What are they excited about as we return to the Moon?
🚨 Ask your questions now by visiting https://nasa.tumblr.com/ask.
Diane Dailey started her career at NASA in 2006 in the space station Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) group. As an ECLSS flight controller, she logged more than 1,700 hours of console time, supported 10 space shuttle missions, and led the ECLSS team. She transitioned to the Integration and System Engineering (ISE) group, where she was the lead flight controller for the 10th and 21st Commercial Resupply Services missions for SpaceX. In addition, she was the ISE lead for NASA’s SpaceX Demo-1 and Demo-2 crew spacecraft test flights. Dailey was also a capsule communicator (Capcom) controller and instructor.
She was selected as a flight director in 2021 and chose her call sign of “Horizon Flight” during her first shift in November of that year. She has since served as the Lead Flight director for the ISS Expedition 68, led the development of a contingency spacewalk, and led a spacewalk in June to install a new solar array on the space station. She is currently working on development of the upcoming Artemis II mission and the Human Lander Systems which will return humanity to the moon. Dailey was raised in Lubbock, Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M University in College Station with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering. She is married and a mother of two. She enjoys cooking, traveling, and spending time outdoors.
Chloe Mehring started her NASA career in 2008 in the Flight Operations’ propulsion systems group and supported 11 space shuttle missions. She served as propulsion support officer for Exploration Flight Test-1, the first test flight of the Orion spacecraft that will be used for Artemis missions to the Moon. Mehring was also a lead NASA propulsion officer for SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft and served as backup lead for the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. She was accepted into the 2021 Flight Director class and worked her first shift in February 2022, taking on the call sign “Lion Flight”. Since becoming certified, she has worked over 100 shifts, lead the NG-17 cargo resupply mission team, and executed two United States spacewalks within 10 days of each other. She became certified as a Boeing Starliner Flight Director, sat console for the unmanned test flight in May 2022 (OFT-2) and will be leading the undock team for the first crewed mission on Starliner in the spring of next year. She originally is from Mifflinville, Pennsylvania, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in State College. She is a wife, a mom to one boy, and she enjoys fitness, cooking and gardening.

Gertrude Ederle, first woman to swim the Channel, 1926, (1935).
Gertrude Caroline Ederle (1905-2003) was an American competition swimmer, Olympic champion, and world record-holder in five events. On August 6, 1926, she became the first woman to swim across the English Channel. Among other nicknames, the press sometimes called her "Queen of the Waves".
"To me, the sea is like a person, like a child that I've known a long time. It sounds crazy, I know, but when I swim in the sea I talk to it. I never feel alone when I'm out there." - Gertrude Ederle

Annie Londonderry was the first woman to bicycle around the world. She was a Jewish Latvian immigrant to the U.S., born as Annie Cohen, when married she became Annie Cohen Kopchovsky, but she gained fame as Annie Londonderry.
Annie was a 24 year old mother of three children when in 1894 she decided to ride a bicycle across the world. Her decision was driven by a bet, as two men wagered that no woman could ride across the world on her own.
The challenge was to complete the journey within 15 months and earn $5,000 along the way. Her first source of income for the journey came from the Londonderry Lithia Spring Water Company. She received $100 to hang an advertisement from her bike and to be known as Annie Londonderry.
Throughout her trip, she earned money by carrying ads and giving lectures. And just under 15 months after she started, Annie returned home to Boston.

Eve, the first woman throughout the Abrahamic faiths. Created from the first man, Adam’s, rib, Eve was created to be a companion for the lonely Adam. The two of them fell in love, with them enjoying the paradise of Eden. One day however a snake spoke to the two, it manipulated the innocent humans to defy God’s will and eat from the tree of knowledge. Because of this Eve and Adam were cast out of Eden. Despite the newfound darkness within their hearts the two stayed together, from their love birthed two children Cain and Able. Cain grew jealous of Able and in a cold fit of envy, murdered him. As punishment Cain was banished forever rejected from his family forced to forever wander without end, for his transgression God cursed Cain with a touch that would wither and kill anything he touched. Despite this tragedy Eve gave birth to many more children, most importantly Seth, the originator of the biblical blood line of kings.
Eve is one of the most important figures in all of the Abrahamic religions. She is given a significant amount of reverence in most denominations, though some cast her in a negative light placing the blame for the fall entirely on her despite there being little to no canonical basis for such radical blame. An idea first recounted in some Kabbalist beliefs was that Eve was Adam’s second wife, the first being Lilith who was cast out and turned into a demon. In Gnosticism she’s seen as the human embodiment of Barbelo, the primordial female principle emanated from the real God, similar to how Adam was said to be in God’s image. In Christian tradition, Eve was said to be the precursor to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, to the point where Mary was said to be the second Eve. Eve is believed to be the Abrahamic version of the divine mother goddess, this is accentuated by her connection to the original Semitic mother Goddess Asherah, the both of them sharing many of their names and roles.

Here's my version of Lilith!
WARNING: There are mentions of a mental health issue, coitus, and misogyny (in regards to her ex-husband).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lerszukotha is a no-nonsense and humble former Awukhoziel of the Admuszroktebi tribe who was cast into Nifjazroghetus, becoming an archdemon of the libertines. She has frequent mood swings from energetically optimistic and joyous to extremely miserable and irritable. She possesses a deep-seated desire to be loved, but she struggles with forming romantic relationships and platonic friendships with men due to how horrible the previous ones went. Despite having PTSD and a fair amount of emotional anxiety, she slowly learned how to live with it and not let it drag her down. She knows how to be self-assured and confident to speak the truth without acting on aggression and intentionally hurting anyone’s feelings. She’s brutally straightforward, forthright, and frank in her communication, only lying when she feels threatened or uncomfortable. She greatly refuses to be subservient, preferring to live her life as a strong-willed and free-spirited woman. She takes pride in her willpower and strives to be self-reliant, rising up to any challenge and using her leadership skills to inspire others. She’s strongly against those who intentionally harm children and women, showing no fear and hesitation in enacting vengeance. Lerszukotha’s presence evokes a sense of terror and sensuality, and she doesn’t mind playing into her seductive and manipulative nature when needed.
She possesses a height of 7’ 11” (241.3 cm) and an hourglass mesomorphic body type with a bit of muscle, broad shoulders, upper arms that carry some of her weight, and prominent thighs. She has pallid skin with scattered brown moles and purplish stretch marks on her belly, hips, and chest. She has sparkling emerald eyes and long, feathered, side-parted light mahogany brown hair. Her hair is decorated with small pieces of grass-green fluorite and metallic purple ribbons. Like all Admuszroktebi women and chieftainesses, Lerszukotha wears leafy undergarments and a waist girdle of dried blueberries, crape myrtle, and silver bells. She has a black veil of glittery gold, a crown of foxgloves and barn owl feathers, and a pair of rope sandals. She dons an eminence purple mantle with an embroidered pattern of coral roses and purplish-red phoenix feathers, which surrounds a golden skull-headed jade rabbit. She has a long, low-necked silk dress covered in a pattern of wisteria paws, wavy golden serpents, red-violet rhombuses, stylised dark purple eyes, ocean green triangles, turquoise water ripples, and Persian plum rectangles. The bodice of her white dress is open all the way to her well-defined waist, which exposes her large breasts.
After being sent to Nifjazroghetus, she has the upper body of her former self, but her lower half is something similar to a 12’ 6” (381 cm) amphiptere. Her serpentine body is covered in light-coloured feathers that imitate twilight, and she has a spiked tail. She possesses seven charcoal black wings that have a faint violet and emerald sheen. Lerszukotha’s light mahogany brown hair has voluminous curls and she has four eyes in a grass-green hue with dark burgundy highlights. The musculature of her Awukhoziel upper body is more muscular, her hands have golden claws, and she has a somewhat swollen belly. Her skin is now a warm ivory with scattered dark red moles and pinkish stretch marks on her upper arms, chest, and belly. She only wears a Persian plum shawl with tassels and an embroidered pattern of coral roses, purplish-red phoenix feathers, and wisteria paws that surround a silver skull-headed jade rabbit.
Lerszukotha possesses supernatural stamina and an incredible mastery over in black magic, agriculture, beast-taming, peacekeeping, visual arts, and music. She can lift cars, trucks, buses, bulldozers, small-moderately sized boulders, and the tallest trees ever recorded. She’s capable of performing any offensive action with the force of destructive conventional explosives, causing damage to tall buildings, neighbourhoods, and house-sized asteroids. As a result of her unnatural dexterity, she has better control over her limbs, muscles, and digits than most living creatures. She’s highly resistant to large objects of supersonic speeds, hydrogen explosions, natural disasters, temperatures near kelvin and below negatives, extremely-heavy armour penetration shots, and asteroid impacts. She can manipulate the night, storms, diseases, desires, libertines, prostitution, mythical beasts, familiars, dark energy, pheromones, hormones, and body chemistry. She possesses a mind that exists everywhere and anywhere simultaneously, and she’s able to induce death through sexual intercourse. She can easily perceive and know everything about a person's sex life, and psychically intuit information about feminine sexuality and reproduction. Lerszukotha is able to shapeshift into humans, animalistic forms, and a dark fog, and channel her soul for creating weapons, shields, energy blasts, and nocturnal animals.

FUN FACTS/EXTRA INFORMATION:
She’s heterosexual
As an Æylphitus, her name means “night”.
She’s the queen of Concupiscence
She was made from the same red clay as Admenozithus
A piece of her rib was used to make Ezasvoghin, which she rightfully labelled as her younger sister.
Despite being the wife of Admenozithus, she was mostly treated as a concubine and inferior to her husband.
She quietly left Admenozithus after he cheated on her with Ezasvoghin, which was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. She still holds resentment and disgust towards her ex-husband despite having some feelings for him.
She slept with multiple men after leaving her husband
She has a habit of kidnapping babies at night as she finds genuine comfort in young children.
She absolutely despises Samuvozeli for what he did to her and her twin sister, never finding it in herself to forgive his heinous actions.
She’s ashamed of having Utsimoderva
After pleading with the divine council, she was sent to hell for three reasons: (1) she didn’t think she deserved to be in heaven; (2) if her ex-husband was ever sent to heaven, she wouldn’t want to see him or be near him; and (3) she wants revenge for what Samuvozeli did.
She smells like cinnamon, frankincense, and myrrh
The foxglove is her most favourite flower
