Thomas and Eileen Lonergan, a married couple hailing from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States, had recently completed a two-year tour of duty with the Peace Corps in 1998. Following their service, they embarked on a journey to Australia.

On January 25, 1998, the Lonergans decided to indulge in their passion for scuba diving at St. Crispin’s Reef in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Despite being experienced divers with 80 dives each, tragedy struck during their outing. Accompanied by 26 fellow passengers and five crew members on the boat "Outer Edge," the couple anticipated a fun day exploring the underwater wonders under the supervision of presumed experts.

The final dive at "Fish City," a vibrant reef teeming with marine life, began around 2:20PM. However, by 3:10PM, the engines of the Outer Edge roared to life, and the boat departed, unknowingly leaving Thomas and Eileen submerged beneath the waves. The Lonergans were never seen again.

The discovery of their bag on the Outer Edge, two days later, raised alarm. Hotel staff, upon checking the bag's contents and contacting the Lonergans' accommodation, learned that the couple had not returned from their dive. News of their disappearance quickly became an international horror story, prompting an exhaustive air and sea search over the next three days.

Diving gear items washed ashore miles from the dive site, suggesting a tragic drowning. A diver's slate found by fishermen bore a desperate message: "Monday Jan 26; 1998 08 am. To anyone who can help us: We have been abandoned on A[gin]court Reef 25 Jan 1998 03 pm. Please help us to rescue us before we die. Help!!!"

The safety procedures on the Outer Edge were revealed to be chaotic, with crew members unsure of responsibility for head counts and dive log entries. No records existed for the Lonergans' depth or time spent underwater. Alarmingly, a mere three days before the ill-fated dive, a Workplace Health and Safety inspector had issued a warning to the boat. While speculation emerged that the couple might have staged their own disappearance, the absence of subsequent bank activity and unclaimed insurance policies refuted such theories. Suicide was also considered but ultimately dismissed.

Jack Nairn, the skipper of the dive boat, faced charges of unlawfully causing their deaths but was later found not guilty. The Lonergans' mysterious and tragic disappearance inspired the movie "Open Water."

A beautiful water bird well known for their Pouch like beak and a tendency to try to fit whatever possible in that pouch. Specifically pictured here is Line, a Pelican raised at Currumbin Wildlife sanctuary after a tussle with a tangle of fishing wire resulting in the amputation of half a wing. (An unfortunate reminder that the bulk of plastic in water comes from lost or abandoned fishing gear)

Line is free to swim around and hang with the wild Pelicans who she will bring around for a snack from the trainers, there's plenty to be had since she's a rather picky eater.

SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. Later, Gary became part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and was one of its first presenters. Magic School Bus/Wild Kratts crossover masterpost

Basically, @daiohficblog and I have been coming up with lots of headcanons that cross over the shows.

WARNING: This post is by no means organized.

How does everyone know each other?

First of all, Ms. Frizzle knows everyone. So of course she would know the Kratt brothers and the rest of the WK team (Aviva, Koki, and Jimmy).

The MSB kids are introduced to the Wild Kratts team during a whale-watching trip off the New England coast.

Phoebe's uncle, Dr. Cecil Byrd, is a traveling ornithologist from Australia and often bumps into the WK team.

Creature powers:

The kids all have their own creature power suits (which Aviva made them for Christmas one year).

Color schemes:

Phoebe: Red

D.A.: Violet (different from purple!!!)

Carlos: Dark blue

Tim: Cerulean

Ralphie: Green

Arnold: Yellow

Wanda: Pink

Keesha: Fuchsia/Magenta

Other hc's

Carlos and Mikey's sibling dynamic parallels Martin and Chris's dynamic. You have the older sibling who likes to goof off and the younger bro with slightly more brain cells.

First creature power the kids used:

Phoebe and Ralphie are step-siblings in this universe. They also have the most pets:

Brandy (a grumpy old tortoiseshell cat). Dr. Tennelli (Ralphie's mom) adopted her before Ralphie was born. Former stray.

Joxter, a black-and-white tomcat. Brandy's son. Adventurous, but also lazy (rather like his namesake from the Moomin books). Good swimmer.

Renee and Megan: Two red foxes, rescued from a fur farm. Renee has the "normal" reddish-orange coat, and Megan is leucistic.

Jeanette: An old border collie (female). Another rescue.

Loretta: A black-and-white Newfoundland dog. 6 years old.

Charlie: a piebald ball python. (Not sure whether Charlie should be a boy or a girl.)

Fang: a male red-kneed tarantula belonging to Ralphie.

HC's continued (not in any particular order)

Carlos is very arachnophobic-- so he tries to avoid spiders at all costs. However, most other "scary" animals (sharks, crocodilians, snakes, bats, etc...) don't frighten him.

Martin and Chris have become somewhat of "elder sibling figures" for the kids.

Wanda is the water-lover of the MSB gang. She brings her snorkeling/scuba gear WHEREVER she goes.

Phoebe and Ralphie (AKA the Terese-Tennelli siblings) like to visit Ralphie's uncle Brian at the lake to go fishing. It's the same lake where the "Bass Class" fishing contest took place.

Uncle Brian (Dr. Tennelli's younger brother) is an expert fisherman.

In the fishing contest before the events of "Bass Class," Brian won first place in the local fishing contest, and Gavin came in third. Fortunately, Brian is a lot nicer about winning and losing than a certain cheater named Zach.

The WK kids of Frogwater Pond (Gavin, Ronan, Jenny, Katie, Aidan, and Nolan) are in this AU, and they know the MSB kids. (Since they know Phoebe and Ralphie, who come to their forest every summer).

Carlos has two younger siblings: Mikey (one year younger) and Maria (three years younger).

Mikey is a computer/tech prodigy, and as such, often helps Aviva with her inventions. He also makes his own inventions (for which Carlos is usually the test subject). He uses a wheelchair to get around.

Maria is the math expert of her siblings. She is also deaf and uses American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate.

Mikey might not be able to walk, but he's good at a lot of things: fishing, kayaking/canoeing, playing the piano, and more.

Phoebe and Carlos (the most avid birdwatchers of the MSB gang) have developed a "secret language" composed entirely of birdcalls. One key part of this language is that anyone using it has a birdcall that stands in for their name.

For instance, Phoebe's bird name is the eastern phoebe's song, while Carlos uses the northern cardinal's song for his name.

They also teach the birdcall language to Martin and Chris, who use the calls of the purple martin and pileated woodpecker, respectively. It does not go well.

Phoebe might seem harmless, but she isn't. She's been taking karate classes since she was little, and if you hurt any animals around her, RUN. In fact, she's rather like her avian namesake: small and unassuming, but a fighter through and through.

Wanda is even more of a fighter-- leading to the bird nerds in both crews comparing her to a kingbird.

The Ice Cream Run is a time-honored tradition of both the MSB gang and the Wild Kratts team. Some details:

The best Ice Cream Runs are at night. Everyone get in the car/bus/Tortuga and head for the ice cream store.

You do not want to interrupt the Ice Cream Run. Under ANY circumstances. (The WK villains learned this the hard way.)

Phoebe and Martin bond over the fact that they share their names with birds. (The eastern phoebe and purple martin, respectively.

Any time either of them sees one of those birds, they'll send each other a picture of said bird with the caption "this you?"

Wanda can pilot the Cheetah Racer and the Amphisub and the Buzz Bikes. She is not allowed in the Tortuga's cockpit.

Carlos can pilot most of the underwater vehicles (the Amphisub and the Manta sleds), but he always crashes the hoverbikes.

Mikey usually helps Koki with system maintenance of the Tortuga. (At least in the early days, when he's still learning how to make computer programs without any bugs.)

How each of the kids handles being captured by any of the WK villains:

Arnold: Carlos shows up and frees him. (The two of them are rock bros, and rock bros always have each others' backs.)

Carlos: Annoying them with horrible puns and messing with their tech.

DA: Smacks the villains with her books.

Keesha: Also resorts to punching.

Phoebe: Fury of the bird she's named after.

Ralphie: Smacks the villains with his baseball bat.

Tim: Escape artist.

Wanda: Crowbar to the face. (Nobody knows where she got the crowbar.)

Wanda has only been captured once. After that time, none of the villains dare to capture her again.

Pretty much all the MSB kids (Arnold included) will resort to violence or trickery if they're captured.

Carlos might be the goofball of the MSB gang, but he can switch into serious mode very quickly-- especially when one of his younger siblings or friends is in danger.

MSB kids from oldest to youngest: Carlos, D.A., Wanda, Tim, Keesha, Arnold, Ralphie, and Phoebe.

There is a 6-month age gap between Carlos (born in October) and Phoebe (born in April).

By contrast, the shortest age gap is between D.A. and Wanda, who were born one week apart in November.

Carlos's favorite creature power to use is peregrine falcon power-- to the point where he always keeps a falcon feather with him.

Tim is the climbing expert of the MSB gang. Wanda is the swimming expert.

Tim is also the only person in the "I Injured Myself Falling Out of a Tree" club (which comprises himself, Phoebe, Wanda, Carlos, and Chris) who has never broken a bone.

Every now and then, Carlos (dinosaur nerd) will contact the Tortuga to tell them he's seen a dinosaur. They know full well that he means birds.

Wanda rescues her pet bullfrog Bella from a shady pet store while Bella is still a tadpole.

As in the "Hopes Home" MSB episode, Bella escapes and goes off to live in the wild. However, Wanda can't help but worry about her.

HC that Bella escaped to Frogwater Pond, and the kids there keep an eye on her.

The "Gets Swamped" episode of MSB is also canon to this AU. After the events of that episode, the swamp Carlos helped save is made a nature preserve in his honor.

Carlos and Wanda are practically adopted twins, and they share a brain cell.

Wanda technically has two brothers, but she doesn't get along with them very well. She argues a lot with her older brother Henry (they both get on each others' nerves), and there isn't a lot she can do with her younger brother William.

Martin and Chris have substitute-taught Ms. Frizzle's class a few times. It ends up being just as chaotic (if not more so) than the days when the Friz is there.

Australia intrigues me… are there really as many deadly things there as I’ve been told? and have you ever had an unpleasant encounter with one?

Hmm, that's surprisingly hard to answer because I wouldn't say it is super dangerous, but my cousins in England strongly disagree. You always ask the long ass questions Lost, and give me the opportunity to share fun facts! :D This may end up being an essay, because far out. I apologise in advance.

There are for sure a lot of potentially dangerous things around, but it depends on where you are. I'll only be including those around my area.

Well, the first that comes to mind are Dugites.

These bastards are highly venomous, and have the potential to give a lethal bite. They aren't notoriously aggressive, but if you fuck with one around november-ish you are gambling with a higher power. These snakes pop up in semi-urban areas a fair bit, and a sub-species is found on Rotto in rather high numbers. My dad found a juvenile in someone's swimming pool once, and as a kid I was told to never play in the pig-face around our house because that would be a preferred shelter for them. Basically, don't piss it off and keep your distance and you are fine.

In terms of other snakes I was warned heavily about as a kid, tiger snakes (highly venomous) are also pretty prominent. that is known to seek shelter, even if it means braving a human to get to shelter behind them. Some say they will actively attack. So, seeing a rather large snake coming right at you could be rather upsetting. They like wetlands and, such as the river a certain someone liked to go swimming in as a kid. Warning: Tiger snakes are amazing swimmers.

We get sea snakes and death adders, but other than that you are probably fine. Actually- funny story about someone who got drunk and put a dugite in an esky, but that's a post for another day.

The ones I hate the most: Fucking spiders. I am not a fan. Redback spiders are evil and I wish they would all just spindle along back to hell. We get one per week in the peak of summer, including a rather large one hiding in my jacket on the coat rack last night. ALWAYS check spider-likely spots, because they will be there. They are venomous, and despite being rarely fatal, it hurts like an absolute bitch. I had a rather bad reaction to a bite once when I didn't check the shed once. I was throwing up for far longer than I would have liked. Never made that mistake again. These spiders do not deserve the mercy of a cup or paper to banish them outside, squish them on sight. Or better yet, poison them so they crawl around and suffer for a bit, but don't let it out of your sight when you spray them: they crawl shockingly far after being sprayed and have been known to give you a parting chomp if able.

My dad knew a guy who had a gear stick ball made of one of these trapped in resin. It fully deserved to be shoved in resin.

One of my favourites growing up was the Blue Ringed Octopus. It was always my favourite part of going to AQWA, and used to have a plushie one! These little guys even featured on my human biology ATAR exam. :D DO NOT TOUCH!! There is no antidote for their toxin, and the only thing that will keep you alive is being put on artificial breathing until it wears off. The trick to them, though? Sometimes, you don't even know you got bit because they are so small which is highly dangerous because if you decide to go for a swim when the toxin kicks in and then your lungs just go offline. Only the size of a coin or so.

Look at him! Glorious.

Stone fish aren't typically found near Perth, but cases do come up every now and then. You still get them in W.A., but its usually up north. These breathing warts of a thing have a wonderful hobby of pretending to be rocks, which means people don't see them. Upon standing on them, one of its many venom coated spines will stab you. Hot Tip! Should this ever happen to you, don't keep stepping or put pressure on it if the barb is in you. The more pressure, or the harder you step, the more venom gets pumped in. Tread carefully in the ocean, my friends. They are highly venomous, and will ruin the next 1-2 days of your life. Can you spot him? :)

To add to the stone fish, Cobblers are a type of venomous catfish that employ the same tactics found around the coast of Perth and Albany. Those barbs are very painful, but I don't believe lethal. Apparently, they are rather tasty.

In general, wild pigs in the bush are common and will attack if provoked or if they have young. Once on a trip to Queensland on the opposite coast where feral pigs are a really big issue, there was just this dude in a ute with a couple of pig carcases hanging off the back on the highway. I've got a picture of it somewhere, if I find it I'll let you know.

Kangaroos have the potential to disembowel or severely maim a human if they piss one off. We kept about six of them as rescue pets, one of whom now lives with a kangaroo called Kapow. Kapow was named after his tendency to attack. Fully grown adults are a force to fear, roughly as big as a human when standing and very strong. Just don't piss them off and you will be fine. Most of the time, they are nice little friends! These are some pics of... Belle and Digby, I believe? These were before I was born lol.

Oh, and ofc the sharks. I went to Rotto about a year ago, and we got kicked out of the water because there were sharks in the water nearby. An attack is rare, so if you swim between the flags and keep an eye on the lifeguards you will be fine.

And in some areas, we get the colloquially dubbed "Drop Bears". It's pretty intuitive, they are like koalas but they drop out of trees on top of their prey.

And, ofc because I must, the TLDR of other little nasties that aren't in W.A. but are worthy of an honourable mention:

Red-Bellied black snake- potentially lethal

Australian box jellyfish- arguably the most venomous marine animal

Irukandji jellyfish (although these occur in W.A., but nevermind)- potentially lethal if untreated

Cassowaries- human-sized birds that have claws capable of inflicting major damage, potentially lethal if provoked

Saltwater crocodiles- fun to watch, keep out of the water. My favourite is called Scar, he is good at jumping out of the water.

Sydney funnel web spider- Fatal in 15mins or so without antivenom. My grandad used to capture them and donate them to hospitals for milking to formulate the antivenom.

Inland taipan- yikes

Cone snails (found in W.A.)- "The venom from one cone snail has a hypothesized potential of killing up to 700 people"- (Kapil, Hendriksen, Cooper, 2023)

Bluebottles (found in W.A., but also everywhere here)

Tics- I know a guy who lost his leg from a tic bite, some cause paralysis

Blue-bellied black snake

Many many many more snakes. So many snakes.

Im not going to even go into the sharks

Even male platypuses have a spur capable of creating intense and pain lasting weeks that morphine doesn't treat.

"Just talk to the camera like a person," Cuddy interjects, popping out from behind said device. "Don't be shy. God knows he wasn't."

Reverie inhales sharply and stares at the camera with those eerily dark, almost-black brown eyes. "Fine. Fire away."

History of Marine Mammal Rescue Day

Marine mammals have a history that dates back farther than human history can tell. Originally hunted by native coastal people for food, pelts and fat, they have come a long way over time. Now, many of them struggle to survive due to the impact that humans are having on their lives.

Sadly, due to illness and malnutrition on the west coast of the United States, spring is the height of animal rescue season. Marine mammal rescue organizations along the coast of the Pacific Ocean gear up for the busy pinnipedia (aka seals) season as early as mid-January, when the delightful Northern Elephant Seals start being born.

Next, comes pupping season for the Harbor Seal and then the Sea Lion pups start being born mid to late June. The Pacific coast also is home to Northern Fur Seals and Guadalupe Fur Seal. And of course the Sea Otter.

Cetaceans (or whales) also need help from illness and injury during this time of the year as well as all year round. Polluted waters, marine debris and illegal fishing gear can contribute to harming and killing all manner of aquatic life.

Being good stewards of the planet should include the biggest part of it, the ocean and its inhabitants. The actions (and inaction) of humans have polluted and toxified the ocean. Overall climate change has warmed the oceans and altered the patterns where fish swim.

Marine Mammal Rescue Day was established to pay attention to the fact that these young marine mammals are frequently not strong enough to go far and deep enough to go after the fish they need.

In 2017, Senator Toni Atkins from the state of California proposed a bill that would create Marine Mammal Rescue Day. And though the day has its beginnings in the United States, the oceans are shared by people from nations all over the globe. who is diego ?

Diego Ostin Fuentes is a twenty-six year old tour guide and professional diver from Paraíso in the Dominican Republic. Growing up on the coasts of Hispaniola made the seas an integral part of Diego’s day to day life. From an early age he became an avid fan of freediving, a form of underwater diving that relies on breath-holding rather than the use of gear. 

Given that there wasn’t much of a profitable market for the niche sport in his hometown, Diego put his skills and radiant charisma to work entertaining the throngs of tourist that flocked to his home. He was hired as scuba diving guide, not only for his aptitude, but also due to the strange fact more ‘high ticket’ sea creatures tended to come out on his tours. Sea turtles and dolphins were his most common draws, but he once led a tour that featured a remarkably up-close-and-personal encounter with a migrating humpback whale.

In 2018, Diego decided to try his hand at an international diving competition. Hosted in the Bahamas, Diego booked the short flight and, much to everyone’s surprise, the first timer set the world record by diving, self propelled, 160 meter (524 feet) on a single breath. Following this massive moment in the freediving community, Diego became something of a very-specific celebrity. Four years later, he was invited to give a speech at the grand opening of a freediving school launching in Perth, Australia. 

After a few fun filled days down under, Diego kept hearing rumors that he needed to check out a shipwreck off the coast before heading back home. Eager for a new diving experience, he made his way to Poseidon’s Wrath. For reasons beyond his understanding, Diego couldn’t get enough for the remote island. Something, everything, seemed to be pulling him further and further into the clutches of the enchanting island. On the off chance they may have an opening, Diego stopped by Delphinus Tours and left with a job. Six months on and Diego has finally started to feel as though he has found his footing in his new home.

A routine of sorts

Sunday morning after coffee and social media time in bed we went for our ritual swim, coffee and croissants. With it now being summer there are buoys across the beach to stop boats coming in. We probably could have still ventured out to the island but decided to stay within the buoy line, particularly as it’s been a few weeks since we last swam.

Later in the morning we did some grocery and other shopping before heading home for lunch and Tour watching. It was looking very much like a sprint stage so we both got some chores done throughout the afternoon while listening to the commentary. We did have intentions of going for a snorkel but got sidetracked (well me anyway) by what I was doing.

Nibbles and dinner were out on the balcony. We were treated to a jazz concert in front of a restaurant/bar on the point next to us. The music wafted across to us so we could enjoy it on the balcony.

Monday morning we headed to the pebbly beach next door and tried out our new snorkeling gear. It’s certainly not Coral Bay but a nice way to spend some time in the water checking out the fish.

Home for coffee and to change and it was out to do some errands. Then back home for lunch.

This afternoon we started the cleaning and repacking before we head off tomorrow. This year for some reason our July bookings have languished, hence the coming and going between bookings and the need to clean and pack everything up in case a booking does come through. Thankfully we seem to be booked out from the last week in July to September just before we return from the Pyrenees with Rob and Wend.

Late this afternoon we went for a dip at the beach followed by a sangria at one of the local bars.I have to say we absolutely adore our life here in L’Escala, particularly when the weather is behaving as it is now. I only wish we could spirit our loved ones from Australia over to here to share this with us ❤️

We eventually shoved off home (the sangria had gone to our heads 😳) for nibbles and dinner on the balcony - bliss!
