Writing Flaws

Yesterday I posted a list of random flaws to give your characters. Today, I'm posting a few tips about writing flaws :) Enjoy

Give your character a few. Everyone has multiple flaws and it's important when writing realistic characters to keep this in mind. Also remember; some are going to be more prominent or visible than others.

Give importance to their flaws. Whether their flaw of being nosy leads them into trouble or a new part of the story, make the flaws count. You don't have to incorporate all of them, or even one for each character, but make the flaws progress. This also helps if you get stuck writing. Another way to make them important is to have a character arc, simple but effective. Remember, it takes time to get out of old habits so even if the character grows they will likely retain bits of their old personality. It also keeps it interesting

Be consistent. Pretty easy to explain, if your character is dogmatic, don't allow them to be all accepting of a new ideology just to make writing easier.

Don't forget the little things. Apply their flaw to small parts of the story, this makes it more believeable and more interesting to read.

"So what's your plan? Are you going to sulk the whole vacation?"

"Maybe."

"Sounds like fun..."

Blaine sighs heavily. It's been a day since they arrived and Blaine, once he realized his hair had succumbed to the humidity, just grumbled endlessly. Kurt could barely get him to go to the beach with him (that's why they went to the sea, after all).

"I told you this would happen,” he says. “I look like I have a baby lamb growing on my head."

Kurt chuckles, but Blaine only looks more desperate. He sits rigid and motionless on the towel, his eyes never leaving a half-destroyed sandcastle nearby. Maybe he thinks if he doesn't move, no one will notice him.

“Remember what you said when you gave me the promise ring?” Kurt asks.

Blaine frowns. Of course he remembers.

"I promised... I promised to always love you. And…”

"...mostly to make sure," Kurt interrupts, "that I always remember how perfectly imperfect I am."

"You are."

"Of course," Kurt says with a shrug, "I'm fabulous." Blaine can't hide the tiny smile that appears at the corner of his mouth, which Kurt finally feels like a small victory.

"So why don't you believe that the same goes for you? You're perfect just the way you are, Blaine."

But Blaine keeps staring determinedly at the sandcastle.

"You know, I'm actually glad for the humidity," Kurt turns to him again after a while.

"Well, thank you..." Blaine replies, pouting.

"You're my husband, Blaine. And yet I have embarrassingly rarely seen the man behind the product. Although I like what I see."

Blaine frowns even more. "You're just saying that."

"I actually find it hot." This statement has clearly piqued Blaine's interest, he carefully peers out from under his messy curls at Kurt.

"Really?" he asks so shyly, like a child, that Kurt almost laughs.

"Honey, you see your unruly curls as a flaw that ruins your always immaculately put together appearance. But you know... when I look at you now, I can only think of something completely different."

"...What?"

"That I finally get to run my fingers through your hair whenever I want to for two whole weeks. And I have a feeling you're going to love that, too." Kurt smirks, then leans in to brush Blaine's frizzy hair with his fingers and plant a big, encouraging kiss on his cheek.

Christmas Eves (5/21)

Notes: Posting this from my phone in the airport so my apologies for formatting errors.

Chapter 5: Flaw

The next morning it was still December 24th.

When Blaine checked the date he had the urge to chuck his phone across the room, but he didn’t want to break it. Then he realized it would probably just reappear in perfect condition on his nightstand the next morning anyway.

Knock on the door. “Blaine, honey! Are you up yet? I need to run out for a few things, I’d love if you came along!”

“Be there in a second!” he called out, just so she’d go away.

He needed a plan.

“Oh, this is nice,” Blaine’s mom said when they passed the bathrobes. “But I’ve already gotten you something cozy.”

Blaine had decided to live through the day as if everything was normal, trying to recreate the same conditions as the first time he’d experienced Christmas Eve. Third time’s the charm, after all. He was paying close attention to everything that happened, trying to identify any flaw - something he’d missed, something he was supposed to do, some reason behind the repetition.

“Mom,” he said, remembering his initial frustration about his mother’s gift. “You didn’t get me pajamas, did you?”

“It’s a tradition,” she said, dismissing him and moving on.

“I don’t need pajamas,” he insisted. “It’s too hot in LA for the ones you buy, anyway.”

They stepped outside, and she paused to face him. “Darling, just let me have this.”

He sighed. “Okay.”

When he and Cooper were kids, she would get them new pajamas every year, and insisted on taking a photo of them wearing them. It was a tradition, but one he felt they’d long outgrown. Blaine just slept in his underwear nowadays, and he had sweatpants if it ever did get cold in his apartment. He didn’t need a plaid flannel sleeping outfit, even if his mom liked buying them for him.

But he’d capitulated the first time around, so he let it go today, too.
