Piri slumped in the corner of the booth at the tavern, frowning into the distance. Curled around his feet, snoring lightly, was his panther companion, Blot.

Javik returned, his plate armor clanking slightly, each hand carrying two tankards. Imrash was hard on his heels with more tankards, cleric's robes dragging slightly on the grubby tavern floor. She didn't appear to notice; orcs generally didn't care about a bit of stickiness.

Javik thumped two tankards in front of Piri and hopped up onto the bench next to him. Piri picked up a tankard, leaned forward, and clanked it against Javik's, then Imrash's.

"To a mission well accomplished," rumbled Javik.

They other two gave a small cheer and took a drink.

"And to Azar, off scouting our next job," said Piri, holding up his tankard.

Javik and Imrash clanked their mugs to Piri's and drank to that, too. Javik wiped the foam off his beard, gave Piri a sharp look, and said, "So, when you going to ask her out, eh?"

Piri turned bright pink and almost dropped his drink. "What?" he exclaimed.

Imrash glared at Javik; Piri heard a muffled thunk that was probably her kicking Javik's greaved shin. Javik ignored her and waved his tankard.

"Look, you've been mooning after Azar for years, and there's only so many lovesick glances a dwarf can take."

Piri gasped.

"I do not shoot lovesick glances at Azar!" said Piri, aghast.

Imrash cleared her throat. Piri looked at her pleadingly. She shook her head and shrugged.

"Sorry, Piri," she said, "You kinda do."

Piri crumpled, thunking his forehead onto the table. "Oh, no," he wailed.

"I don't see the problem here," grumbled Javik. "You go up to Azar, you say, 'Hey, want to go out,' simple."

Piri raised his head and glared. "It's not that simple! Azar is so hot. What would she want with a weird-looking guy like me?"

"You're not that weird," said Javik.

Piri glared. "I'm serious,"said Javik. "You know. You both have, um. Pointy ears!"

"I'm an elf," said Piri slowly. "She's a goblin. Of course we have pointy ears."

"You have loads in common," continued Javik gamely. "You're both good at killing bad guys."

"Yeah, well, so are you, and you're not proposing that I ask you out," said Piri. "We all are!"

"Speak for yourself," said Imrash. "I almost never kill anyone."

"Yeah, whatever, you heal us," said Piri, pointing a finger, "and that makes you complicit. Never forget that."

"Azar winks at you," Javik soldiered on doggedly. "All the time. That's a good sign, right?"

"She winks at everyone! She's a rogue! I think they teach that the first day at rogue school, how to wink at everyone and make 'em lose their minds."

"Make who lose their minds?"

Three heads swiveled as one towards the cheerful voice, and sure enough, Azar stood not three feet away.

"Az!" Piri squeaked. "That was quick."

"Ah well, you know me," said Azar, "can't bear to be away from you for too long." And she winked.

Piri quietly lost his mind.

Javik looked meaningfully at Piri. Imrash rolled her eyes and looked to be praying to her God for strength. Piri opened his mouth, and found himself saying, "Would you like this ale? I haven't touched it yet."

"I would love an ale," said Azar, beaming. Piri tried not to melt.

Still, Javik's idea took root in Piri's mind. Over the next few months, he tried to gather his courage and ask Azar out, waiting for a quiet or opportune moment before popping the question.

Unfortunately, every time he tried, something would happen.

The first time, a disoriented owlbear crashed into camp. By the time they'd chased it off, the mood was completely ruined.

The next time he tried, they were ambushed by a beholder just as he worked up the courage.

The list went on. Chased by a mimic. Surprise caustic slime. Mind-controlled crows. An animated tree. Assorted mooks, thugs, and henchmen. And, on one memorable occasion, a mind flayer.

Piri began to wonder if he were cursed. Perhaps the mismatch in hotness offended the gods themselves, he thought gloomily. Oh well. At least he had Blot.

And then it happened. Piri got hit. He wasn't even sure what by. He was normally so careful; one moment he was taking aim at a wizard who was menacing Javik, the next something hit him in the back, and he was thrown forward, his shoulder white-hot agony. Blot screamed.

Everything became a blur. He couldn't move; the sounds of fighting crashed and ebbed around him. He awaited a death blow that never arrived.

Endless moments after, hard, competent hands turned him over. Piri blinked. It was Azar, covered in blood, her face a worried snarl.

She had never looked so beautiful. Piri found that he could move after all; he reached out and took her hand.

"Azar," he said, "if we survive this crazy encounter, you want to go out with me sometime?"

Azar's eyes, the same gooseberry green as her skin, bulged.

"You fucking kidding me?" she said.

Piri's spirits fell. He knew it. "It's OK," he said. "You were always out of my league." His lips felt weird. Numb.

Azar looked more incredulous. "You fucking idiot," she said, "you're bleeding to death, and this is what you worry about?"

"Kinda, yeah," said Piri. "I've been trying to ask you out forever but things keep happening. And look, right now, nobody's bugging us."

OK, his lips were definitely numb. That was bad right?

Azar was saying something, but he couldn't hear her above the roaring in his ears.

Everything went dark.

When Piri woke up, it was in an unfamiliar bed. He blinked. His back felt terrible.

"About time you woke up," said a familiar voice. "You were beginning to worry Blot."

Piri turned his head. Azar was perched on a chair beside the bed, looking exhausted.

"Hi," he croaked.

And then he remembered what he'd said right before passing out, and wished that he had, in fact, died. He wondered if he could convince Imrash to pull the soul out of his body.

"You worried us sick," said Azar.

"Sorry," Piri mumbled.

Azar leaned over and took Piri's hand. "You sure have a way of asking a girl out."

Piri groaned. "I'm so sorry," he said. "Uh, please disregard it."

Azar looked at him sharply. "But what if I don't want to?"

Piri's heart leapt. "Oh?" he said.

Smooth, real smooth.

"Yeah. What if I want to take you up on that? The two of us. Dinner and a show."

Piri closed his eyes. "Yeah," he said. "I'd love that." He opened them and looked at Azar. "Uh, only if you really want to."

Azar rolled her eyes. "Of course, you idiot. Why else would I ask?"

"Dunno," said Piri. "Pity? Giving me a reason to live?"

"Ha!" said Azar. "Look, if the promise of a date will help you heal faster, that's a win as far as I'm concerned. So, consider: the sooner you get well, the sooner I can wine you and dine you." She winked.

Piri melted, and smiled, and resolved to heal as fast as he could.

back to btvs blogging to fix my brain a little i wanna talk about why jenny/ethan would function like calendiles except more insane and probably worse.

first off -- @ethanrayne was the one who fully converted me to how excellent the notion of bisexual ethan is, simply because ethan sharing the same desires and inclinations as giles and pivoting to the exact opposite end of the spectrum creates this excellently absurd warped mirror where they're both somehow overcompensating. trying to distance themselves from something and furious at this person who is able to inhabit this aspect of themselves that they themselves find abhorrent. giles could date men but he doesn't and won't because it's wrong so OBVIOUSLY he is going to live in a constant state of rigorous self-flagellation and boxed-in misery. ethan could date women but he doesn't and won't because then he's living within the confines of the system so CLEARLY the only path forward is to embrace selfish reckless hedonism. see what i'm saying here???

moving towards jenny/ethan with that in mind: i think ethan overlaps in key ways with both jenny and giles enough that he and jenny would get along OUTRAGEOUSLY well under particularly specific sets of circumstances. jenny and ethan both have a thirst for adventure (it's why giles likes them!) which means that they would both very likely have a hell of a lot of fun doing all the crazy party things that giles inevitably draws the line at. (the man does have limits.) they're both playful, flirtatious, sarcastic, and absolute unmitigated disasters who think they're cooler and more capable than they actually are. on that level alone they would get along really well.

BUT ALSO: ethan and giles are super similar in that they are so so mired in a decision they made in their early twenties and so resistant to change! despite ethan talking all the big talk about being freer than giles and more honest than giles, he is playing a very specific role just the same as giles is. he refuses to ever be there or be real. he would, i think, so easily see jenny as ripper's tiresome attempt at heterosexuality, as that's what fits most easily into his extremely limited concept of who giles is, and then actually meeting her and seeing her with giles and realizing that this is someone gorgeous, smart, funny, & completely in the loop re: giles's sordid history -- choosing to be with him not Because Of ripper or In Spite Of ripper but because she loves the whole complete man -- ethan would try and play mind games with jenny and she'd decimate him with her pinky finger and he would have that same moment as giles where it's like. i underestimated you SO thoroughly. i am at your mercy.

& ethan and giles are ALSO super similar in that we see them both in a romantic connection (giles with jenny, ethan with giles) where they are basically begging to be kicked around. jenny likes kicking people around. there is a very clear thing that could happen here.

— has some big time attitude problems because of her home situation + lucking into making friends that often enable her diva nature since she’s so fun to be around and is a genuinely good friend underneath the PersonalityTM. due to her parents being nearly always away, Aphrodite started hosting parties at her home once the final nanny was dismissed. they grew more unhinged as the years passed, especially when she started to become a bit reliant on substances to keep good vibes up. got truly out of hand when she was around 22-23 and she went through Thee break-up with Seven and her messy ass started to spiral hardcore (the angry crazy ex that only just got talked out of keying your car and making a viral video out of it kind of hardcore). played off all of the spontaneous hook-ups, drinking, and drugs as just fun and sexy times so silly nothing to worry about, but she was absolutely miserable and showed little to no concern for her own health/safety. her friends/band-mates truly kept her from disaster during that period, and she’s eternally thankful they haven’t held it over her head. when Orion joined on as the band’s manager he took over a good portion of Aphrodite Caretaker Duty, which meant 99% of the coddling was converted into stern conversation to let her know what paths her actions could lead her down. (she’s still partying by the time botb starts and is prone to being persuaded into bad decisions but she’s managed to tone it down a little bit for his sake + the band’s future)

— Aphrodite and the Lovers formed when she was around 15-16, initially called something else but that was lost to time. the band has always written their own music but they’re also fans of performing covers on the side, enjoying the process of transforming some of their favorite songs into something that fits their vibe for a bit of extra fun. their first EP—Purely Pink, which consisted of 6 songs—was released when she was nearly 19 years old, receiving no huge numbers but being immensely satisfying as the first completed project for them all. pop band!!! with a focus on themes of love/relationships/sex/attraction, hence the name and vibes they go for to accentuate Aphrodite’s vocals which naturally lend to seductive energies. break-up songs started to get scattered throughout as a way for Aphrodite to cope with the horrible Seven split (she also had some responsibility in that but you wouldn’t be able to tell from her lyrics. brat in denial :/), as well as some others on longing for love/support/acceptance. glaringly obvious she’s letting out some feelings on trust + parental issues on one or two bops lmao. she’ll get some truly vulnerable songs down the line when she’s grown up (recognizing her wrongdoings, working to repair them, getting clean, finding true love, etc etc), but those are a bit off.

— fortunately she does have the talent to back her ego as an incredible vocalist and natural at dance (add on the waves of charm and good humor, truly insufferable how lovable she can be), but Aphrodite still has real problems with frequent displays of selfishness and believing she's the main character in every room. one day the band will snap at her about it and she'll cry but my god will it be deserved, because she's a great friend most of the time but oof when the self-importance shines,,,,that bitch be bright. used to be less noticeable when she shared the spotlight with Seven, but her ever-growing need to be the center of attention played a decent part in things going to shit with him.

So I’ve talked plenty about some side projects, but now it’s time to discuss one of the people who helped make this world what it is:

One of the founding members of the vigilante organization, Alice is best described as a ball of energy; she’s outgoing, friendly, playful, flirtatious and almost always upbeat, someone who always wears her heart on her sleeve. She enjoys everything from parties to spending time with her friends watching classic sitcoms.

She’s also quite talented artist and seamstress, often making her own clothes. She was actually the one who designed the costumes for the Helixes, with some guidance from each of them and what they needed most.

As a social butterfly, Alice enjoys making friends at every opportunity, and also has a reputation for her many relationships, both with boys and girls (very scandalous in the 60′s). Many people describe her as a hedonist, but Alice counters that she doesn’t know what that word means.

Of course, under all that, Alice has a long and troubled history, having fled from the Soviet Union at only 14, spent time as a refugee wandering across Europe and America before arriving in the small town of Lithium in October 1966, where she found a family who took her in. While she tries to keep a positive attitude, many of her experiences have stuck with her ever since.

And while can seem carefree, Alice can get quite serious and resourceful when she needs to, be it helping someone else or engaging in a fight. She remains one of the Helixes’ heavy-hitters under her codename:

Alice’s vigilante identity is, funny enough, the easiest to hide due to her nature as a werewolf.

Werewolves in the Helixverse don’t truly transform; while their skeletons- particularly the arms and legs- may slightly distort, the excess mass is the product of the rapid division and differentiation of oligopotent stem cells. This process essentially creates an exoskeletal mass of muscle, bone, nerves and epithelial tissue linked to the original brain.

The werewolf body is essentially more of a suit than a one-to-one transformation. As a benefit, any damage done to the werewolf is easily ignored or healed quickly, to the point that severed hands and even the head can be reattached.

Additionally, rather than fur, the werewolf from produces structures similar in strength and chemistry to spider silk, which can easily be produced and adds layers of protection. For Alice, the coloration is actually the product of her having Oculocutaneous Albinism; as the new tissue typically has melanin, most werewolves are brown or black in color.

As a consequence of all this, while werewolves have nearly cancerous levels of cell division (with far superior DNA repair systems), but their body temperature elevates. Transformations can’t occur instantly, but require several minutes of gradual and painful modification, which leaves Alice vulnerable and so she has to find a place to hide beforehand.

To meet these demands, her nutritional requirement also massively increases, and so Alice is incredibly hungry before and after transformation, and has to almost constantly eat whatever’s available, be it human food, things like dog and cat food, tree bark, etc. She’s even eaten neocytes mid-combat.

As Lupa, Alice can fairly easily hide her identity, and uses her strength in everything from open combat to natural disaster relief.
