Flo Rida feat Kesha - Right Round 2009
The song - to use Wikipedia's phrasing - heavily interpolates the chorus of the Dead or Alive song "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" in its hook. It reached the top ten of the music charts in nineteen countries worldwide, and is one of the best-selling singles of the digital era.

fun facts
in the '80s, Run DMC was pushing an anti- drug and gang message: "If only one kid turns away from gangs or drugs, we’ve been successful … Life is hard enough without drugs or joining gangs … We offer kids alternatives. We tell them they can go play ball, go to school. There are lots of other things you can do besides taking drugs or joining gangs … We are not thugs. We don’t use drugs. People try to stereotype us"
years later, DMC admitted "Yeah we was getting high as hell. I was a cocaine man, Run was a weed head, and Jay was weed and 40s. The coke in the ‘80s was the best coke ever!"
when asked why the woman in the song was described wearing 2 different outfits, T-Pain said: "The first girl is dressed how Flo Rida likes. Second girls is dressed how I like. Flo likes a classy lady. I like a lazy bitch"

Year-End Poll #60: 2009
Tumblr media
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, The Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift, Flo Rida, Jason Mraz, Beyoncé, Kanye West, The All-American Rejects. End description]

Apparently something happened this year involving 3 of the artists on this poll...
Anyway, last poll I talked about the 2008 financial crisis and now more than ever we can see the effects the Great Recession were having on popular music. Upbeat party music provided listeners with a feeling of escape. The Black Eyed Peas shifted their style from hip-hop to a more electropop sound, leading to the groups commercial peak. Songs like Lady Gaga's Just Dance presented lyrics about having a good time despite everything falling apart. Musically, the latter half of the decade was defined by electropop. To quote James Oldham, the head of A&R at A&M Records at the time:
"All A&R departments have been saying to managers and lawyers: 'Don't give us any more bands because we're not going to sign them and they're not going to sell records.' So everything we've been put on to is electronic in nature." (x)
Even outside of pop music, the rising popularity of the electronic sound and online distribution allowed musicians easier access to production tools and audiences. According to Michael Angelakos of Passion Pit, the electronic sound allowed him to make music while still living in his dorm. While not obvious now, this small-scale "bedroom pop" sound will become even more prevalent in the following decade.
Another staple of this sound is the increasing popularity of Auto-Tune. We already discussed its use with artists like T-Pain, but Kanye West's use of the plugin on 808s & Heartbreak is also notable. Instead of using the vocal effect as the backbone for a party track, here Auto-Tune is used to convey the coldness of the lyrical content. While incredibly controversial, this album would be a huge influence over the genre. And when we look at the direction rap starts to head in the coming decades, the changes in the genre don't make sense without bringing up this album.
And with that, the 2000's have come to a close and we are finally reaching the next full decade of these polls.

Let‘s be real here: Shawty is one of us POTSies! What else could this describe but a POTS episode?
She hit the floor
Next thing you know
Shawty got low, low, low, low, low, low, low, low
That accurately describes the feeling when you lay down but you need to get even more horizontal!

GVH Character Playlists: Stella
STELLAAAAAAAAAAA! (Had to, sorry not sorry)
Tumblr media
My Explanation: Stella is the bubbly girl of the group, being a comic-relief of sorts alongside Sage. Thus, I made her playlist consist of early-2010s dance-pop music with female singers, plus one song from the 90s. Some of them have some deeper meanings to them, though.
Feel This Moment: Like this one. To "feel this moment" is to enjoy every little bit of your time before it ends, the kind of wisdom Stella would espouse.
Wild Ones: I'd say this would relate to her first meeting with Worm Drama.
The Edge of Glory: Basically, it's her chosen "swan song" for the entire group.
Wannabe: For when she wants to unwind with her friends.
Starships: Funny thing about this pick, this would be the exact kind of song Stella would love from childhood and not know how kid-inappropriate the lyrics would get until years later. XD
Die Young: Similar to Feel This Moment, this would be her bonfire song.

According to Dolly Parton, "Jolene" was inspired by a red-headed bank clerk who flirted with her husband Carl Dean at his local bank branch around the time they were newly married.
Jolene’s name is based on that of a young fan who came on stage for her autograph: "I said, ‘You’re the prettiest little thing I’ve ever seen. What is your name?’ And she said, ‘Jolene.’…I said, ‘That’s the prettiest name I’ve ever heard. I’m going to write a song about you'"

Year-End Poll #59: 2008
Tumblr media
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: Flo-Rida, Leona Lewis, Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne, OneRepublic, Jordin Sparks, Sara Bareilles Usher, Chris Brown. End description]

Now well into the latter half of the decade, the direction pop music has been heading is even more evident. The music is starting to skew electronic in its sound and the plugin Auto-Tune is starting to be featured more as a stylistic choice, as seen with T-Pain and Lil Wayne. Lil Wayne's influence over rap would become even more prominent in the late 2000's and early 2010s. Especially with the artists that would eventually be signed to his label, Young Money Entertainment.
There are many reasons why the sound of pop was skewing towards club and dance music. Modern production techniques worked really well with the style, music-purchasing platforms such as iTunes worked better for listening to individual singles rather than full albums (which caters to dance music well), and the 2008 financial crisis. With the recession, more and more people were looking to pop music as an escape. As touring and traditional concerts became less financially accessible for both artists and audiences, clubs and parties served as environments to experience music with a group. To quote this article on the subject:
With themes of luxury, escapism and radical optimism, these upbeat and positive tracks provided comfort in the fantasy of extravagance. Despite most peoples’ situations at the time, almost every song on the radio was about loving life and getting money. Music was fast and people were dancing. (Amanda Kiefer)
But more than that, CD sales plummeted after the recession, while online music consumption soared. More and more, music was making its home on the internet.
There are a surprising number of articles written about dance music in the face of global financial inequality (and many of them have started popping up recently, I wonder why...), so I've linked to a few below.
"How music has responded to a decade of economic inequality" Scott Timberg, Vox
"The Recession in the Music Industry - a Cause Analysis" Peter Tschmuck
"How the Recession is Impacting Music, Too" Laura Palotie (this article is from 2008, so it's interesting as a contemporary reading of the situation.)
