So here’s the whole weekend project.
📷 Nasty Carpet.
📷 Nasty carpet gone. Floor a little worse off than we thought, but totally fixable. See, wood floors in the 1800s weren’t finished as they are today. During the 19th century, they were left bare and swept, scrubbed and sanded clean, or they were polished by hand with linseed oil and beeswax. Ours were the latter. And in 150 years they’ve never been refinished. But my guess is the square of damage in the middle of the room probably came from a floorcloth or oilcloth (precursor to linoleum). We’ve seen this in other historic homes we’ve toured in this area. Problem is, in high humidity the ends of the floor cloth would curl up. Guess what we can still see…on each short end of the damage is a line of a million tacks like someone was trying to hold down just such a problem! So educated guess.
Service areas, like hallways, kitchens, and bedrooms were often painted making them easier to clean. Our entire second floor has painted floors.
📷 Third picture is after I cleaned the floor, let it dry, and then hit it with some feed and wax (orange oil and beeswax - I don’t have any linseed oil) but this always makes the floors look brand new.
📷 And finally, the furniture put back. Looking at the picture though, I’m feeling the need to de-clutter the mantle and the walls. I love it though. And James doesn’t even mind the floral carpet.
Next weekend: bathhouse floor.

ok lol
after all that i didn't actually tell myself the story of what i have to do today
you see the hubris. i was like "i have described the problem huzzah" check a thing off the list move on.
part of the thing i was describing was how lists don't work for me. so like. in the text of that post was me explaining that i had to do a thing in order to function. and then. then! i didn't do that thing.
ok so today what do i have to do! a lot of it i have already done on sheer momentum but now i have been stymied by something and have to regroup.
i have to load and run the dishwasher, check!
i have to put in a load of laundry, check!
i have to go over to my own house, bringing a number of items which i had for traveling but which should not wind up at dude's mom's house, check!
I am going to bemusedly greet the electrical inspector for the town, who was supposed to be rescheduled and not come today, and give him a little tour of the things the electrician said weren't ready to be inspected, and he's going to say oh yes, I see what he was going for, he's done a lot of stuff already, isn't this nice, well I'll be back, have him call me when he's done those two things he didn't get to, everything else looks really good. This will derail me a bit, but I will persevere.
whilst at the house, i am going to cut out fabric to make my own not-quite-floorcloth to go under the microwave, since i want to put something there before i do anything else, and i hate the paltry shelf-liner offerings actually in stock anywhere in town, and i am too decision-paralysised to actually buy anything online rn. check! (finished measurements will be 26.5x23". I found enough white canvas for this, and have soaked and ironed it in accordance with the tutorial, but i am going to paint it and then sew it to an unpainted backing, which I hope will protect the shelf surface, as I don't need this shelf to be grippy since it's just to protect the painted surface from the microwave and whatever winds up next to it. So the backing is an old mostly-polyester sheet, somewhat pilled with wear, because i know that won't be slippery but also won't scratch the surface.)
I was going to then prime this canvas, but I don't... have any primer? This is false, I know I do, but damned if I know where it would be. I have to stop by a hardware store for paint chips and polyurethane anyway, so now I guess I'll get some primer. I don't think I need art store primer for this at all.
i have terrible acrylic craft paints but i am not trying to do anything wildly sophisticated. in fact i'm not sure what i'm trying to do. actually i could get little sample pots of a couple of the colors i'm considering at the hardware store, paint smallish swatches on the wall, and then paint this cloth with the leftovers, LOL. That might actually be the thing to do???
Dude might be annoyed if I'm swatching without even having consulted with him but 1) i know what he likes and 2) he's so busy rn he won't even put his plate in the dishwasher or talk to me about what groceries to buy so like, he doesn't have the energy to care, and anyway you can just paint right back over swatches and in fact I will do so, so whatever. Possibly the swatches will just give him something to disagree with but when you are as fatigued-in-general as he is, often that is the best way to get a decision made!
(heck what if i painted the whole shelf liner cloth a gradient between two of the adjacent swatch colors and then stenciled a doily over it in metallic gold that'd be a pretty sick shelf liner pattern)
ANYWAY the story of what else i have to do today is that i also have to go to the grocery store. so if i manage both the grocery store and the hardware store before noon i'm gonna be the fucking champion of the fucking world i tell you what. but that is my goal. i should do the hardware store first so the groceries don't have to sit in the car and get warm but that feels contrary because the grocery store is more urgent. but no, i'm going to do the hardware store first because i am a little bitch and can do what i want. and i won't forget the groceries after that. (famous last words, stay tuned to see if i do)

Andrew´s depiction:
The boy put down his floorcloth, wiped his hand on the seat of his trousers, and with the back of it pushed the hair away from his eyes. It was fairish, the color of old gilt. He had a fair skin which was smoothly tanned, so that his gray eyes showed up very bright and clear. He was working in old corduroy trousers and a gray flannel shirt with rolled sleeves. (...)
“Here. Move that mucking bucket, you lazy—, d’you think we’ve got all day?” Laurie hadn’t heard Willis coming up behind them. The boy had started a little, but repressed it quickly; he moved the bucket, civilly but without apology. Willis stepped forward to pass it. There was a kind of forced clumsiness in his gait, a crude preparation for knocking the bucket over. Laurie swung out on his crutch and, silently, caught Willis’s eye.
I have to say I liked Andrew more than Ralph. There´s so much to say about this character...

I either draw yellow with tiny wee eyes or big eyes that stare deep into your soul (usually go for the second one) and they always misaligned :]
Still trying to learn how to draw Duck and Red, I’ve got Red’s head right but beaks are difficult to draw and I’m studying how to draw fat people (since I grew up with body tutorials that always made people skinny, it’s hard for me to draw without reference or tutorials)
Also, I like to base Red from house items like mops, floorcloths and other stuff… I don’t know, I think it’s fitting 🤷🏽
yes lovely !!!

Linoleum
Tiles, wood, parquet, woven carpets and floorcloth were the most likely options for domestic flooring until the invention in 1860 by Mancunian Frederick Walton of the material that would become the world’s most popular floor covering until vinyl took its place a century later, essentially on the grounds of cost. The story as related by historian Pamela Simpson is so revealing of much of the…

Sound design – Close Encounters of a Special Kind – Part 6
A warning: This is a quite long article. It describes the whole process of making a “song” (well, kind of), from the first ideas, the sounds, the thoughts and the individual steps. So, if you are a rather impatient kind of person – simply skip this article.
Angry Alice “Morning Haze”
Sound design is not only about game sound or special sonic effects for film and for film sound. It´s also about finding and producing something audible to complement text, a novel, poems, short stories. I wrote a couple of texts, lyrics, poetry, back in the days. Mostly quite dark texts I must admit. The art and technique of sound design includes also setting text to music, and so I decided to use my old writings and produce an album – It´s in the work right now. Just watch the music video of the first piece called “Morning Haze” to understand the following. Here´s the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/umeuml2rh93c2xn/morning%20haze.mp4?dl=0
"Morning Haze" is a depressive track. It is about a child´s fear of the dawn and the events of the day ahead on one hand, and overprotective parents who cannot accept that their child is a separate person with a personality of their own. Parents unable to let go. It´s produced using not only musical instruments, but mainly sounds extracted from real world recordings.
Let me talk about the process a bit. First of all I thought to find a sound corresponding to the blood pulsing in the veins of the child. The sound should remind of liquid pulsing through hoses and pipes, but must not even a bit sound like the stereotype heartbeat sounds out there. And not like simple water running through pipes – of course not. It should be an artful reminiscence of pulsing blood. I got the idea to record a round and corrugated wooden stick rolling across the wooden floor in our living room. When I would smooth out the very high pitches, and perhaps slow down the recording a bit, I might get suitable basic material to design the sound I was looking for. Well, I did so, and the recording provided me with what I had been looking for – they did indeed. And more! To my big surprise I discovered the sound of breathing in the recording after slowing it down and doing some very basic granular processing.
Motivated and inspired by this discovery I continued recording things in the living room. The not at all studio like acoustic room design, the unusual “sonic” environment generated a succession of very useful sounds (watch the video and listen). I recorded different wooden things falling down to the floor (I used a stepped ladder and let them fall from about 3 meter above the floor) , I threw diverse metallic items from the ladder, plastic, rubber and even crumpled paper. I played with dices on the floor, wiped the floor with dry and with wet floorcloth, with dry and with wet sponges, let marbles roll across the floorboards etc. I used 3 different microphones at the same time: My Zoom H5 microphone head hanging about 50 cm down from the lamp in the living room, an old (lofi) microphone which remained from a broken tape recorder (they sold external microphones with their recorders back in the 1960s), and a contact microphone (DIY with peizo elements) directly glued to the wooden floor with adhesive tape. Later on I partly layered the recordings of these 3 microphones. Just listen to some of the raw sounds here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kp0chm5l2d0yrs7/sounddesign_4%20sounds.wav?dl=0
Then the sound processing began. All in all I ended up with 46 layered tracks tracks. There had been a lot of equalizing going on of course – I mainly used the parametric EQ2 in FL Studio, some delay processing with u-he´s MFM2 and all the reverb is made using the free VST OrilRiver. There is no life audio stream granular processing going in the piece. All the granular sound design is made on individual snippets of the recorded sounds and re-recorded afterwards before I inserted it in the piece. I used the VST CrusherX by accsone as well as Granite by New Sonic Arts for the granular sound tweaking. There´s no compressor involved nor did I any kind of mastering – I like the raw character of the piece as it came out of the mix.
And here is the text for those who don´t want to listen to this dark and moody piece (there might be some squeamish people among you :-)
“When the night elves lay the day for you with their last dance …
… when their screams drive away the house spirits, who are crouching in corners, dark alcoves and cupboards …
… where they have been waiting greedily for the moment to jump into your dreams and torment you …
… when instead the silent shrill songs of the elves calls out the horrors of the day …
… when the morning haze hangs over the forests, wafts of mist drift lazily over meadows, and the cold grips your thoughts through cracks in the windows …
… when sleeps is loosing strength and you begin to hear your breathing …
… when – with a shake of your head – you deny what your first glance seemed to see at the window, when you dismiss it as the blurred remainder of your nightmare, knowing that you saw the twisted grimace of madness grinning in your room …
… when the morning fear chokes your breath, when your heart doesn´t want to beat but it has to …
… then be sure my child, that we are nourishing you, and our own fear sharpens the knives like scalpels, and that we will infallibly find the point, where the pain is greatest …
… then our poison flows into your veins through the umbilical cord of love, my child …
… then we clear the way for you – level and smooth – polishing the ice as smooth as a mirror, so that you don´t trust your own steps, tagger slip and fall, my doll …
… because you are the heroin in our little room, the drug that makes us forget our own pain – for a short time …
… for a short time at least – before you slip away from us …
… for whom we do everything and don´t spare no effort – not considerate, not on us, and not on you …
… when the elves screech in the morning haze, my child.
… to be continued
Stay creative and enjoy your day!

❛  there’s a big diference between mostly dead and all dead.  ❜ (for ben, love caleb <3 )
Ben squinted at Caleb, head tilted back just slightly. You could hear the gears turning.
“What?” he responded quizzically. “Dead is dead, Caleb. If you’re mostly dead, then you’re still among the living, and therefore not at all dead. And that is that.”
He tossed another playing card at an upturned hat that rested on the floorcloth of Ben’s tent. Sometimes soldiering was stressful and rather nonstop work and suffering. Other times, events seemed to hit a lull and long hours dragged by. Of course there was always work to be done, but when it was this hot and that work was mostly comprised of writing reports, it seemed more prudent to wait until after second sleep to pen them during cooler hours.
