I can’t see a snow plant without stopping a second to look at it. The little pop of color, often showing itself in rather drab surroundings is always interesting to me. Reading up on them a bit, you find that they live a rather interesting life. Because they lack leaves and, therefore chlorophyll, they can’t photosynthesize traditional plant life. They derive all their nutrients for growth from fungi which have stolen the nutrients from trees by attaching to the roots. The fungi receive needed fixed carbon from the snow plant. Yesterday on a drive with my lovely bride I spotted the largest group of them I’d ever seen. Alas, they were in a fairly sunny area and were pretty wilted on closer inspection. However, I spotted this one walking back to the truck, sitting in a nice little shady setting next to a fir stump framed by some oak leaves. I captured these on my walking grocery run. Yellow daisy’s & deep pink Rugosa Roses. Rugosa Roses are commonly known as wild roses. They are actually a shrub & they R highly fragrant. They have an underground root system which grows horizontally so over time if it’s not kept in check there will B a long hedge of rugosa roses in a few years. Captured Sept 7, posted Oct 1, 2022.
