In your most recent post with andreil & hand holding, is there a backstory for the cold hands one? One of them asks "does it hurt?" So I was just wondering:)

Okay I know you sent another ask right after (I’m so glad you were able to find the gloves/hands post bc I’m going to believe that means my links work and help to some degree) but I held onto this one because IM NOT DONE WITH THE COLD HANDS INTERACTION

Anyway the bit in that post is Andrew asking Abram if the scars on his hands hurt in the cold, and Abram knows better than/knows it’s no use to lie to him. Also Abram/Neil being quietly honest with Andrew about not being ‘fine’ is something I hold soooo close to my heart 🥺

i think it's amazing how no one can ever agree on how sir and king look.

to me, sir is either a fluffy tortie or a fluffy ragdoll, and i think it's mentioned in the extra content that she is a tortie.

king is more difficult. he's definitely fluffy, but i have no idea on breed and coating. i either think of a black cat or a white cat for king. no in between.

“Who does this belong to?” Aka the disagreement over sharing clothes sometime in the distant future.

“You are long past the days of being a liar,” Andrew was lazily folding laundry at the end of the bed as he insisted on continuing the meaningless play argument they’d started earlier. One pile next to him was freshly dried clothes Neil had washed earlier, the other side haphazardly folded clothes Andrew simply refused to fold neatly. “Admitting it to yourself is the first step.”

“I have nothing to admit.” Neil held his hands up as he sat with his back to the headboard of their bed. It was one of those days full of nothing but chores, the day of the week in which they had to force each other to complete the menial domestic tasks that kept their home running smoothly. He was trapped by the cat on his lap, of course, his excuse as to why he wasn’t helping Andrew with the folding. Both of them were comfortable in their sweatpants and pyjamas, and a record played softly from the living room. “We’ve been sharing clothes since my sophomore year. I’m telling you this argument is invalid.”

Andrew paused and pointed at the hoodie Neil was hearing. Neil took the strings in his hands and smiled, his head cocked to accompany the cheeky grin. “That is mine.”

“This is ours,” Neil corrected him, and Andrew shook his head as he placed down the T-shirt in his hands. “Not yours.”

“I specifically remember buying that before a game in New York because all the clothes I’d packed were too thin, and it was cold.” Andrew said, then re-corrected Neil. “It is mine.”

“So, whose t-shirt are you wearing right now?” Neil nodded towards the beige top Andrew had pulled off the floor that morning.

“My own.” Andrew said, nonchalant, knowing Neil hadn’t succeeded in proving his point. “Because I bought it without explicit intent for it to belong to the both of us. I bought it for me. You can wear it if you want, but it’s still mine.”

“Bad example, then, because I’ve never worn it.” Neil leaned forward and pulled a sweater out of the pile of clean clothes that he knew both of them adorned pretty often. “Who’s is this?”

“Yours.” Neil tutted in disagreement, and Andrew waved the reaction off. “Just because we are living this domestic nightmare doesn’t mean we have to become the same person, you know. You can just settle for saying you like wearing my clothes.”

“But I’m not wearing your clothes.” He folded up the sweater to help out, throwing it onto the already-folded pile. “That’s our sweater.”

“If you say so.” Andrew shrugged and threw a T-shirt at him. It disturbed the sleeping cat, who jumped off the bed and skittered away on the hardwood floors. “Who does that belong to?”

Neil held it up and looked at it. “Both of us.”

“That’s yours.” Before Neil could put the tee down, Andrew threw another, causing him to drop it anyway as the second article of clothing hit him in the face. “And who does that belong to?”

Neil recognised it without having to look. “That one is mine. I’ve never seen you wear it.”

“You are so close to getting it.” Andrew threw two more at him in quick succession, and Neil laughed as he struggled to catch them both. “Rapid fire. Tell me, Neil, who do they belong to?”

“This one is yours because it’s too big for me.” Neil held them both up, dodging another one being thrown his way. “This one is ours, and that one,” he nodded at the third one that had gotten caught on their headboard. “That one we both wear, so it’s both of ours too.”

“Yes, no, no.” Andrew caught them with a soft, barely there smile, as Neil hurled them back his way. “You bought the second two, so they’re yours.”

“But you love that one.” Neil gestures towards the one his boyfriend was currently folding. Andrew pouted, neither agreeing or disagreeing, even though he knew the statement was true. “You always wear it. Is it too romantic to just admit that there are some things in this life that belong to the both of us, together?”

“Our home does.” Andrew tilted his head back and forth. “Our cats do. There are things we bought as equals that belong to both of us. There are pieces of clothing,” he held up a hoodie as an example. “That we bought together. Although it may come as a surprise to you, the things you buy these days do actually belong to you.”

“Sure,” Neil leaned forward to pair together some of the socks that sat with the pile. “But normal couples share things.”

“And we do share things,” Andrew nodded. “My point is that if we ever had to go our separate ways again, there’s things you would take, that if I asked you right now who they belonged to, you would say both of us. That’s all.”

“Oh, so it’s like, you’re just covering your ass for when we break up, is that it?”

“I meant if you transferred teams, dumbass. But if that’s where your mind takes you, then maybe you and I should have a conversation.” Andrew said. Neil didn’t bother to argue and just shook his head at the suggestion, still smiling as he tucked one sock into the other. “I just don’t agree that everything we share has to belong to the both of us.”

“That’s your opinion. I just don’t have to agree with it, either.” Andrew placed the empty laundry basket on the floor and picked up the pile of folded clothes to put them away as Neil spoke. “But truthfully, you only think that because it means you can still say that you like how your clothes looks on me. I know that’s it.”

“Maybe you’re right.” Andrew tucked the t-shirts into a drawer. “Maybe you’re wrong. Usually wrong.”

Andrew knew there was some semblance of truth to what Neil had said, and Neil knew it too. They would argue about it again, at some point. For now, they agreed to disagree, and Andrew tucked away his own hoodies.

Neil put away their socks.

I wrote a really negative rant post about All For the Game fanfic, so I want to write a positive one. I really do love this fandom, and it’s fanfics, and I want to share the love as well.

By category, here are some fics I love.

Time Travel

Once More by AkemiAsh I just call this The All For The Game Time Travel Fic in my head. It has a really interesting take on Neil and Andrew going back in time all the way to high school. It will probably never be finished, but I still love rereading it.

One More Time (With Feeling) by elesary All of elesary's fics are wonderful and there are several on this list. Many are unfinished, and though the author tends to update a new chapter every week, they rotate between fics. So if you don't like unfinished fics, this is not the one for you. However, if you want a time travel fic with Neil and Andrew going back to their first year at Palmetto, with really interesting characterization and relationship dynamics, this is the fic for you.

Amnesia

Back To The Start by fuzzballsheltiepants There's a lot of fuzzballsheltiepants on this list because they're an absolutely brilliant writer. You can't go wrong with any of their fics. Please note that they are locked though, so you will need an AO3 account to view them.

Muscle Memory by elesary Andrew wakes up in the hospital with no memory of the past few years. It's incredibly in-character and wonderful.

Presque Vue by elesary Neil wakes up in the hospital with no memory of anything since Andrew drugged him at Eden's. Really interesting start! Unfinished so far.

Raven!Neil

Black As the Raven Is, He’ll Get a Partner by nekojita I think this counts as a fandom classic, but it's my favorite Raven!Neil fic so I had to mention it anyway. The Ravens find Neil after he turns down the Foxes' offer to play at Palmetto and he is a Raven from the beginning of his college career. Featuring Neil & Jean friendship and really, really slow-burn Andreil. Mind the warnings for graphic violence and rape (I think it's slightly worse than canon)

Ever More Raven Neil (series) by ynnon this is a recent series where Neil goes to Evermore for Christmas and never leaves. It has two complete installments thus far but the series is technically unfinished. It is one of the most original takes on Raven!Neil I have ever seen and the writing is spectacular. I can't recommend it enough.

Neil’s Asexuality

Swinging Along the Z Axis by SpangleBangle Neil and Andrew discuss what attraction is like for Neil.

Sliding Doors by Moth2Flame Neil and Andrew never kiss during their time at Palmetto. Neil and Robin figure out their asexuality together, and Neil and Andrew get together years later.

The Test & All The Little Lights by fuzzballsheltiepants The first fic really focuses on Andrew, the second on Neil. I call this the "Willing vs. Want To" fic in my head and think it's a really interesting exploration of asexuality (particularly in the second installment).

Random Andreil

Not Nothing by TheRainbowElectric Possibly the most brilliant AFTG fic in existence. I cannot hype it up enough. Seriously, just go read it.

Except When It’s No by TheRainbowElectric The one where they try handcuffs and it goes badly. Based off Nora’s extra content.

Out of the Ashes by puddlejumper99 Neil and Andrew meet pre-canon when, after his mother’s death, Neil starts attending high school in Columbia instead of Millport.

A Mewment Like This by fuzzballsheltiepants I'm usually not the biggest fan of AUs, but this one is wonderful. Andrew and Neil meet at the vet because they both have cats with stupid names. It might sound fluffy, and it is clever and funny, but it also explores some of the darker themes and character development that happen in the books.

if every time we touch, you get this kind of rush by Talls This fic has Andrew and Matt kissing (still with Andreil and Matt/Dan as the main ships) and it sounds absolutely insane but just trust me, you have to read it. This is also possibly the best-written makeout scene I have ever read in my life.

An incomplete list of my favorite AFTG fics

All of these are on AO3, and yes I’m only writing this because I’m procrastinating working on TMHYHM. So, in no particular order, my favorite AFTG fics.

The Multi-Part Fics (Complete)

All of these have ended and taken a bit of my heart with them.

1. August by gus_47 (2/2)

If you know anything about me you know that I’m obsessed I enjoy anything and everything written by gus_47. I am their biggest fan; I would read their grocery lists if they let me. So obviously, I was obsessed with this story as soon as it was published. It’s Kevaaron and just- ugh. Heartbreaking. AND !! There’s going to be a second part. So technically it’s finished, but never fear because we’re not done with my boys yet.

2. 12 Ways To Woo A Minyard by NikNak22 (14/14)

This is a non-exy college Andriel fic with background Kevaaron and Jerjean. Basically, Neil is friends with the Foxes and has a huge crush on Andrew. The Foxes try and help Neil confess, lots of fun fluffy antics ensue. Plus, it’s a “Kevaaron is obviously happening but Neil’s too busy pining to notice” fic, so... yeah

3. Flavors of Fall by NikNak22 (20/20)

Don’t even get me started on this one. It’s Andreil, Andrew’s POV, small-town romance. Andrew’s a photographer and lives in a cottage!! in the woods!! and the Foxes have small-town spooky season fun!! It’s just so fluffy and fun and god the yearning. One of my favorite fluff fics, stg it’s so amazing.

4. Bad Habits by mitigates (2/2)

Okay so listen... I won’t lie, there’s a lot of smut. HOWEVER!!! There’s also fuckin soft Jeremy Knox running a childrens home!! and I need that in my life so badly. Anyway, it’s Andriel, Kevaaron, and Jerjean. Also Neil and Kev hooked up once, and it’s a big joke?? Honest to god, it comes up at least four times-

5. Red Rabbits by bloodydamnit, Jeni182, SeaBear13, and windeavesdrops (25/25)

It’s Andriel with background Renee/Allison, not a fluff fic at all so be warned. Andrew is a journalist who starts a podcast trying to hunt down Mary and Nathaniel Wesninksi. Neil, obviously, doesn’t want to be found. It was an interactive story, there’s a Tumblr page, it’s just so good? Really, go read it. I have no other words.

6. quicksand by likearecord (9/9)

This bad boy is Andriel with fuckboy Aaron and Neil is Kev’s little brother. The sheer amount of gay panic in this story, I simply cannot express to you how much fun this is. I cackled so loudly in the middle of the fucking night. Also like- Andrew gets to have friends?? and family who loves him?? And Neil is a being of utter chaos. It’s beautiful.

7. The Odds Are Never In Our Favor by MalikShah (29/29)

It’s not my normal style, but it was so good? It’s AFTG + The Hunger Games. Andriel, a few character deaths, and just a lot of tears. They’re so gay and so sad and it’s so fun. 

8. Thorns by Mostly_Maudlin (2/2)

Andreil during Neil’s fifth year. Lots of healthy communication after some not-so-healthy communication. Just a sweet little fic of Andreil learning how to live when they aren’t right next to eachother. (there is smut tho, just so you’re prepared).

9. a switchblade is my preferred weapon by badacts (48/48)

LOCKED FIC, YOU NEED AN AO3 ACCT TO READ !! 

Anyways, this is AFTG if Neil was in the Nest and left with Kevin. It’s Andriel and very good. The slowest of slowburns. You aren’t ready. You may think you’re ready, but you aren’t.

10. Am I Screaming To An Empty Sky? by phan_taloon (4/4)

guys... this one is just heartbreaking. It’s Andriel, hurt with very little comfort, and honestly super triggering so be sure to read the tags before you read. Basically, the Foxes lose the finals and Neil ends up in the Nest. I think I sobbed the whole time I was reading, honestly.

11. never fallen (from quite this high) by crystalcrow (43/43)

It’s AFTG from Andrew’s POV. Deffo a must-read, that’s all I have to say. Also, the first AFTG fic I read so... good memories, ig?

12. Back To The Start by fuzzballsheltiepants (11/11)

Andriel during Neil’s fifth year. Andrew gets injured and loses his memory. It’s just as heartbreaking as it sounds, but also so painfully sweet. gives major “I don’t know you, but I know that I love you” vibes. So good.

The Multi-Part Fics (Incomplete)

Some of these are abandoned, some are not, all of them are worth reading.

1. I left you alone in a house, not a home by ohhhhmygod (4/?)

Andreil after canon where Neil has a little brother. It’s not a super fluffy fic so far, but it’s so good !!

2. Blame It On My Youth by youreyestheyglow (115/?)

Andriel 10 years post-canon. They’re foster dads!! Nat and Paige are what I never knew I needed, I’ve fallen hopelessly in love with this story. The quintessential AFTG fic.

3. Hoax by gus_47 (31/40)

C’mon guys, it’s gus_47 ofc I love it. Jerejean after the Ravens. Absolutely, completely obsessed. It’s so fucking good y’all. Just read it.

4. Redemption by accioice (30/?)

So, Neil goes to the Nest as a kid, but instead of Riko abusing them, the Perfect Court becomes family (plus Ichirou). Eventually they go to Palmetto and there’s Andriel!! Kev is a bi disaster, we get some neurodivergent rep, and really really good found family. They just love each other so much. Honestly, it’s a good “what if..?” fic. Like, what if Riko broke the cycle of abuse? It’s just really good and you need to read it.

5. Andrew Minyard v. The Spear Family by preciousfoxes (10/?)

Andrew takes legal action against the Spears and Neil is a “feral dumpster raccoon lawyer”. Really, it’s just Andrew having gay thoughts for 10 chapters straight. And can you blame him? Neil with a man bun. Neil with piercings and tattoos. Neil in a suit. 

6. I Beg You, Whisper My Name Like A Prayer by Louie__TheLonely (4/?)

Picture this. Highschool AU. Neil and Andrew are best friends. They are horribly gay for each other. And horribly oblivious. I AM OBSESSED.

7. Neil Fights The Foxes by This_Witch_Writes (10/12)

Neil picking fights when the Foxes treat Andrew badly? Yes, please. I am a whore for protective Neil. Be warned, there’s some triggering stuff in later chapters. Check tags and stay safe <3

8. Let’s make things interesting by Nico4undead (16/?)

Enter the Minyard-Josten rivalry. That’s it. That’s the whole thing.

9. Innominate by Major_816 (18/74)

Neil gets sold to the Moriyamas, but ends up with Ichirou instead of Riko. Now he’s a badass crime lord working undercover at Palmetto. Get ready for heartwrenching angst and heartwarming found family. I cannot express how obsessed I am.

10. In Which Neil Josten Is A PR Nightmare by CoverYourEyes (16/?)

Eve has the (mis)fortune of working as Neil Josten’s PR manager during the Minyard-Josten rivalry. Otherwise known as: Neil is ungovernable.

11. Tell Me How You Hate Me by Killingmeslowly_24 (that’s me !!) (3/18)

I can’t make a fic list without including my child. So, it’s TKM from Andrew’s POV. Andrew is absolutely feral for Neil, and he’s seriously in denial. It’s so much fun to write. Also!! we get the Nicky content we deserve!! Nicky as an adoring cousin!! (and is that Renee/Allison I see on the horizon? It is? 0.0)

The Oneshot Fics

They’re short, they might be sweet, and rest assured: they’re amazing.

1. Just Because I Can by NikNak22

Am I obsessed with this writer? maybe. Bro it’s 5+1, Neil pranking the Foxes and the Foxes pranking Neil back. Amazing, hilarious, I love it.

2. A Yellow Made Out Of Gray by thelessiknow

5 times Neil sees his friends feel loved + 1 time Neil feels loved. That’s it. That’s the fic. It’s just as fluffy and perfect as it sounds.

3. stay (you don’t have to go) by Major_816

Ohhhh boy. This one. It breaks me. Andriel highschool AU, they meet on a suicide prevention forum. So... major TW. It destroyed me, I’m not going to lie.

4. One day we’ll reveal the truth by allyasavedtheday

Aaron doesn’t trust Neil’s intentions, so Andrew tells him to watch how they interact. Cue the fluff.

I am so sorry in advance. Post-canon, Neil starts leaving sticky notes out for Andrew. Sweet things or reminders, whatever. Andrew saves them all. AND THEN YOU CRY !!

Neil knows his countdown is ending, so he records a video. The Foxes can’t find Neil, but they do find his goodbye. Absolutely soul crushing.

8. just a footnote by Anonymous

Kevaaron, they’re friends with benefits. Aaron is in love and not handling it well. Fluff and smut, so much mutual pining. One of my favorite oneshots ever.

What are your favorite aftg fics?

I don't even know where to start!

Here's a list in no specific order (these are all andreil btw):

First up, The Odds Are Never In Our Favor by @witchkingofanmar (MalikShah on Ao3). I've mentioned it before and I'll mention it again. It's a Hunger Games AU that is arguably better than the original Hunger Games trilogy. This one is absolutely one of my favorites. I've reread it over five times at this point.

Next is In My Defense, I Have None and quicksand and The Bachelor of Baltimore by @likearecordbb (likearecord on Ao3). Honestly they have a lot of fics that I love so check their Ao3 page out. All of these fics are so fun and entertaining while having the right amount of seriousness and they're all so amazing. I've read them all multiple times. In My Defense, I Have None is a high school fake dating au, but not in the way that you think. quicksand is a college au feat. Kevin and Neil as brothers and Andrew doing his best not to fall for his roommate's (Kevin) brother (spoiler alert: he fails). The Bachelor of Baltimore is an arranged marriage au where Neil is presented suitors by his father and has to choose someone to marry in order to form an alliance, and Andrew is one of thoes suitors... and a mafia leader (that's not the right word but I cant think of it right now so... close enough).

Next up is California Drifting and Soulbound by @elesary (elesary on Ao3). I follow a lot of their fics so just check them all out. These two are incomplete, but I jump for joy whenever they're updated honestly. California Drifting is a loose Pacific Rim au and Soulbound has Witch Andrew and Familiar Neil. I love both of these fics so much.

Next is The Foxhole Force by @luna-moon-26-20 (Luna_Moon_26_20 on Ao3). This one is also currently updating, but I can confidently say it is one of my favorite fics of all time. It's a Power Rangers au and it is absolutely perfect. The characterizations and the plot are amazing and I literally drop everything and read it every time I see that it updated.

Then there's heaven and hell (were words to me) by @sporadichearttcollector (sporadichearttcollector on Ao3). I've read this fic so many times, I honestly love it. It's a superpowers au where Andrew is a villain... for the most part... and Neil and the rest of the Foxes are a heroes. It's so entertaining and I highly recommend it.

Last is Your Perfect Imperfections by RidingBubbles on Ao3 (not sure if they have a Tumblr, if they do I couldn't find it. If anyone finds it let me know and I'll tag them). I've been saying this a lot but this is another one of my absolute favorites. This one is also incomplete, but have reread it multiple times already. It's a bdsm au with Dom Neil and Sub Andrew (technically Andrew's a dom but he subs for Neil). It's really very good and there's actually a lot of fluffy andreil which I loved. Go check it out!

I've definitely left out a bunch of amazing fics, but these are the ones I could think of off the top of my head! 10000/10 I recommend all of them.

omg it’s finally open!!! so i’ve been looking for these two fics FOREVER, and i can’t find them anywhere :(

the first one was called “the way young lovers do” i think, and it was aaron and katelyn helping neil and andrew set up their new house, and it ended with neil and andrew dancing to the song in their yard. it was very cute and i can’t find it no matter where I look

and the second one was aaron meeting katelyns parents for the first time, and they are super conservative and hate aaron, so they invite neil and andrew to be there to take the heat off of aaron. i remember neil saying andrew bought him a cartier bracelet and he wanted the one in a different colour, and just being a brat in general?

also if you have any similar fics with the four of them bonding, i would love them!

Patchwork (2.3k, Andreil)

In this one, Andrew lets a bored Neil doodle on his legs, then decides to keep a permanent trace of it. I'm not gonna lie, I'm very surprised this is my number one. I love it dearly, mostly because it's basically just fluff and I'm a massive sucker for fluffy fics, but the fact it's ranking so high is funny to me. It's a little guy, but one I was very happy with in the end.

2. Of Detention and Passing Notes (7.2k, Andreil)

This one started off as a very silly tweet I posted about a High School AU where Neil meets Andrew in detention and bugs him by tossing paper notes on his desk. I had an absolute blast writing it! It's one of my first long-ish one shots so I was very happy with it at the time. Also I had to ask several people about actually getting into detention because I was too scared to get in trouble back in my high school days.

3. On The Road (1.8k, Andreil)

This is basically Neil getting horny while the team is on their way to an away game. I uh don't know what madness took over my brain for this one but you know what? It was fun to write c:

4. Let Our Hearts Do Their Part (8.1k, Andreil)

This... is not what it was originally supposed to be lmao I'm happy with it, but my brain kinda decided to go in a completely different direction than what I originally wanted, which is fine! Sometimes you have a plan but then along the way your idea strays away from it and another sprouts in its place.

5. As It Was (3k, Andreil)

Oof that's the very first fic I wrote for AFTG. It's a sick fic in which Neil gets the flu, is stubborn about it, so Andrew comes back to PSU to take care of him. I really like it, still now. I was sick myself when I wrote it and pretty mad about it so that was a good way to vent lol

PERSONAL 5

Paw and Order (ongoing currently 22k, Andreil)

This is probably the most self-indulgent thing I've ever written. This Cat Cafe AU has my entire heart, I absolutely love it and it is just so comforting to write. I have two chapters left to write for it and I'm excited to mark it as completed when the time comes for it although I will probably be sad about it because I just seriously love this silly thing so much.

TW for the paragraph below: mental health, depression, loneliness

Since this post is about being open about your writing, I have to admit that the first two chapters are very heavy on the angst because I was in a similar kind of mood as Andrew is in the beginning of this fic. I tend to get very lost in my own head, and it usually ends up in me feeling very lonely because my brain is great like that. Being able to project on Andrew (sorry my guy) was very helpful at the time. Me being me though, the next chapters get fluffier because even though I try to pretend that I'm a tough emo person, I'm secretly a softie but don't tell anyone. So yeah, this AU will forever have my heart.

2. Querencia (11k, Andreil)

Aw man okay another one I loved working on. To no one's surprise, this is also a very fluffy boy. Neil and Andrew go on a road trip together. This fic has a special place in my heart too for lots of reasons.

3. Snow Angels (1.6k, Aaron)

Listen, we've barely had snow over here. One morning I saw that one video of a dad teaching his kid how to do snow angels, and my brain ran with the idea. It's centered around Aaron because I just know he is the most amazing dad to his twin daughters. Also, they have a puppy.

4. Le Corbeau et le Renard (ongoing currently 40k, all the Foxes)

Basically everything is the same except Ichirou forces Jean to join the Foxes instead of the Trojans after TKM. I have SUCH a love-hate relationship with this fic. I think I was onto something when the idea popped into my brain, but as soon as I sit down to write it my brain just turns off. I like writing about Jean and his relationship with the Foxes, also all the tiny subplots sprinkled in-between, but sometimes I think I was perhaps a bit too ambitious.

Anyway, all of this to say I need to tame this beast and get back to it after I'm done with Paw and Order.

5. Licorice (1k, Andreil)

It's kinda funny because now that I thought about Patchwork again, these two have very similar vibes. I guess I just have a thing for Andreil, being alone in their dorm and some non-sexual intimacy.
