BNHA Headcanons: Pro-Hero AU! Todoroki Shoto x Reader

A/N: Posting this separately for @eudonyx so people don't get confused by the Christmas greetings in the ask (I am that slow for some things unfortunately). 😭

Featuring Shoto as a loving husband to Reader. (Gender Neutral, fluff)

If there's one thing Todoroki greatly appreciates, it's routine. But not the kind of routine you'd expect, such as mere morning habits. You see, his life as a pro-hero is quite erratic and unpredictable. You never know when disaster will hit. Or when a villain needs to be defeated. But among this chaos, there's one thing that always stands true, one aspect that never changes: at the end of the day, he comes home to you.

In fact, he'd go as far as to say you're his little corner of peace. The world may burn; as long as his (Y/N) is by his side, there's still hope to cling onto. It's just the way it's always been: You are his greatest source of comfort. And so, after a long, busy day, he cannot wait to open the door and see your welcoming smile and hear your soothing voice.

It's the little things in life that matter. This is the philosophy Todoroki adheres to. He has a fantastic reputation, and the masses adore him. He's frequently interviewed and invited to events. Yet, for him, nothing compares to an evening spent hanging out with you. No amount of fame can ever compare to the love and understanding he receives from his one and only spouse.

Such thoughts are naturally matched by gestures to prove it. Todoroki is an incredibly thoughtful husband. Mind you, he's not the type to impress you with gestures of grandeur. He's one of the top heroes and could easily arrange extravagant proposals if you so desired. He prefers, however, to show he cares in quieter ways. Randomly returning with a bouquet of your favorite flowers. Stopping by your favorite bakery to surprise you with sweets. Handing you tickets to an upcoming concert of your favorite singer (yes, he took the time off from the moment he heard about it).

He is also not one to parade you around, but he will be very firm about his relationship. From an awkward, easily flustered boy, to a tactful, confident man. It's not uncommon for Shouto to be approached by fans with flirtatious intents. In that case, he will smile and keep his distance, adjusting his suit with the same hand that bears his ring. "I hope you find someone who loves you as much as I love my spouse", he'll confess cheerfully. "I can understand your feelings, I am the same as you when it comes to (Y/N)", he'll relate empathetically.

Shouto strives for peace and justice, like any other hero, though he'd be lying if he said it's his main motivation. In reality, his driving force is you. He will do his best again today, so that he can return into your arms once everything is done.

"yn, the movies starting!!" ochako screamed. your uni flatmates decided to host a movie night, and with all the stress from finals... it was really something you appreciated.

"on my way! blame kirishima for wanting so many snacks!" you retort, scurrying to the living room where everyone else was.

what bad luck you had. normally the couch was able to hold the lot of you, but jirou had invited her boyfriend, kaminari, to the party. and for the first time, you had the courage to invite your literature classmate, and crush, izuku midoriya.

"theres no more seats..." you mumbled from the kitchen doorway. you werent sure what to do, since this was a problem that never came up. you didnt want to kick anyone off, or disturb anyone since everyone looked comfortable. you also felt a bit down as you missed your chance to sit next to izuku. you knew the others would take a hint, but you never told any of them about your feelings. in the midst of your overthinking, you hadnt noticed the slight turn of izukus head towards your direction. he watched you for a bit as you couldnt come to a solution.

"you can sit on me if you want."

the room fell into silence at izukus statement, jaws dropping in the process. you werent sure if you heard that correctly, nor did anyone else for that matter, as the boy never usually had that kind of confidence — that was something youd expect from kaminari, or bakugo with his girlfriend (a sight youd never expect to see).

"woah, izuku... who knew you were so manly!" kirishima broke the silence, smacking izukus back in the process.

said boy only blinked his eyes a few times before the realisation of what he really said washed through him. in just a few seconds, he found himself stuttering and waving his hands in the air, sweating profusely. you had nothing to say, except laugh. his rambling was sort of cute. but you knew izuku was just a friend, he was only being considerate — its in his nature. "come on guys, you know what midoriya meant."

despite being incredibly shy when it came to all things izuku, you didnt want to miss this chance. you walked over to him, sitting across his lap and resting your back on the arm rest. the edge of the armrest was hard, so izuku slipped his arm there before you even laid your back. his arm was eventually going to ache, you thought, but he still did it anyways. everyone else seemed to have gotten distracted or bored after seeing izukus reaction, and went onto their usual chit chatter before starting the movie.

"thank you midoriya. i didnt know what to do." you quietly admitted, a bit flustered as you were sitting on his lap, playing with your hands awkwardly.

"no worries. i know how it is to overthink. i just hope youre comfortable?" he asked with a sheepish smile, noticing how awkward you were. it took you aback — was he always this thoughtful?

"y-yeah. i am." you looked away, not being able to bare any more eye contact with him. you guys were only friends, and you hadnt been in a relationship in years... maybe thats why you felt the way you did.

the movie went on, entrancing everyone into it. you on the one hand couldnt focus on anything but the mere fact you were sitting on izukus lap, and you werent sure why you even did so. the urge just to melt into him was strong, but you prevailed since you convinced yourself you "didnt want to take advantage of his kindness", even though the boy fully invited you to get comfortable. your neck was currently in a bit of pain from craning it to the side, and you felt too shy to move incase you block his vision or invade his personal space. why did you sit in this position? were you dumb? you were literally frozen trying to not distract him from the movie — something you wish youd be enjoying too.

"your necks going to hurt if you keep on craning it that way. wanna face forward?" midoriya whispered in your ear as to not disturb the others. you felt how close he was in the midst of your overthinking, and it jolted you, oblivious to midoriya. it made him chuckle, but his breath against your skin lingered even when you jolted away. you wanted to chase that feeling again, but fought against it.

"if thats fine... with you i mean!" you exclaimed — you were so thankful it was dark. you didnt want him to see you flustered over his actions when he was just trying to be kind. you wouldnt have minded sitting on anyone elses lap at this moment of time, or even the floor. his actions didnt make you uncomfortable, but rather made you want to-

"of course yn. get as comfortable as you want! think of me as like... a chair!" he quietly joked. you couldnt find that funny in the way he did, but it definitely felt funny to you. it didnt help how you were already feeling. the butterflies in your stomach were running rampage, and below that... you just hoped he didnt feel anything on his thighs. he clearly didnt realise what he was saying... or maybe that was just you feeling otherwise. still, you shifted yourself and found yourself comfortable in his lap, your back now on his chest, faces just cms apart.

for the rest of the movie, you calmed yourself down and found comfort in your position. normally, your mind would be running miles over being this close, to the point where you could count every freckle, but something about him was warm, and his steady heartbeat lulled you to sleep.

when you awoke, you found the movie was already over. you shuffled around, trying to wake yourself up after a good rest. you couldnt see anyone else, so you figured everyone had left after the movie ended.

"awake?"

you jumped, not expecting anyone to be around. "midoriya?"

"you were asleep on my lap, remember?" he reminded, albeit sheepishly, "you fell asleep."

"oh my god yes! im so sorry. i mustve kept you there for-" you turned to check the time, "hours!! im so sorry midoriya!"

his eyes lingered on you, but so did yours.

you could practically see the clogs in his head whirring. there was nothing he could possibly be thinking about, except getting sleep for a long day of lectures tomorrow. he was stuck overthinking as to what he should say or maybe how he should say it, and in that time you found yourself admiring his features. since you and izuku were just friends, you never got the chance to see him up close — how did you never notice how pretty he was?

he probably didnt want what you were hoping he would want. with a sigh, you got yourself ready to leave, wanting to wash all your inappropriate thoughts about midoriya away as to not make this awkward for yourself in the future. he was still your classmate after all. he noticed you shuffling, and that broke him out of his trance. he infact did want what you want. in the first place, he only asked out of kindness, but things changed over time, for example, when you were shuffling against him — he couldnt believe how stupidly oblivious he was. just as you were about to stand, you felt the hem of your shirt being grabbed, "come back."

you looked back, confused. did you get the wrong idea? "please." he asked. and that answered everything. you felt like a giddy highschooler.

PART 1

Katsuki Bakugo

Taller SO: I feel like Katsuki would definitely pout about you being taller than him at first and would continue to deep into your relationship... In public anyway. His pettiness was all about his need to beat everyone, including his partner! He did like that he could climb you like a tree though... I-It meant he could get further in his training! Nothing more!

Shorter SO: Katsuki would teasing the living hell out of you! He would probably tease you either way, but especially if you're shorter than him! He would call you nicknames, like 'mouse', 'tiny' and 'squirt'. He would keep you close to him whenever the two of you are in public though, he knows you can take care of yourself, why would he be with you otherwise, but your small stature made him compelled to protect you!

Izuku Midoriya

Taller SO: Izuku would adore you, no matter how tall you are! But I think he'd get a little flustered if you were taller. He was pretty short anyway, he was hoping to have a growth spurt soon but until then he was one of the shortest in class! The only other guys he was taller than were Tokoyami and Mineta! But he did like how safe you made him feel when you would get close and tower over him!

Shorter SO: Even if you were shorter than Izuku, he still is pretty short compared to other people and wouldn't freak out too much knowing that you're shorter than him, but he would still geek out about it sometimes. He loved the fact you would come too close and be forced to look up at him, even a little bit! He would ruffle your hair and smile down at you, his cheeks pink at how cute you were!

Shoto Todoroki

Taller SO: Shoto was one of the taller boys in Class 1-A and was a little surprised when he saw you were taller than himself, he didn't really have a feeling on the matter, he didn't particularly like or dislike that he was shorter. Honestly, when he felt upset or scared or even angry, he would go to you, you would surround him with your presence, he felt safe in your arms and would do anything to stay there.

Shorter SO: Once again, Shoto didn't really have any particular feeling towards your height, but he did like seeing you get all excited and looking up at him, or when you had to stand on your tiptoes just to kiss him, or even how you only came up to under his chin, everything about you was adorable! But pocket size!

Eijiro Kirishima

Taller SO: Super! Manly! Eijiro was pretty tall, kind of average height, but he thought it was so awesome that he was dating someone tall! You could reach things he couldn't, you'd lean your chin on his shoulder when you got bored in quirk training and he thought it was really sweet when you would kiss the tip of his nose!!!

Shorter SO: It's Eijiro, he'd still thing you're super manly, even if you aren't very tall! He liked how short you were compared to him, he liked that you relied on him for things, like reaching things that were high up! He especially liked holding things you wanted above his head, he tended to make you give him a kiss if you wanted what he had!

Denki Kaminari

Taller SO: I feel like Denki would be the only character to be a bit miffed that you're taller than him, not because of anything massive, just that he was envious of your height! It's not that he wants to be taller THAN you, he just wants to be taller in general!

Shorter SO: He LOVED that you're shorter than him! He probably believed it was your most attractive physical attribute. Don't get me wrong, he thinks you're absolutely gorgeous, but other than your personality, your humour, your intelligence, your patience, your kindness and love and- well you get the idea!

Hitoshi Shinso

Taller SO: Isn't massively happy that you're taller than him, he isn't upset or angry but he isn't totally happy with it... He would prefer you being the same height or if you were a little shorter, but he loves you for who you are! He isn't insecure being around you, even if you are taller than him, he just hopes he grows a bit!

Shorter SO: If you were shorter than Hitoshi, he would definitely think you're too pure and cute for this world, he would do everything in his power to protect you and snuggle and suffocate you! It's not his original intention, just what seems to happen when the two of you go out! I feel like he would coddle you to the point you get annoyed and angry with him, but he doesn't care! You looked so cute!

Shinsou was so chill about everything, you felt comfortable enough to not mask your behaviors.

And he didn’t pay them any mind until someone else pointed out that they weren’t typical.

Which he didn’t take very kindly.

They were offered a glare, “Are you saying [Name] has a problem?”

You had to hold back the laugh that wanted to escape from his protectiveness, “Well, it’s not a problem as much as a–um–condition.”

“Huh?”

“They’re right, I don’t—I don’t have normal behaviors, since I’m autistic,” you explained.

“Oh, I know you are,” he shrugged, “I just don’t find any issue with it. It’s a part of you and I like you, so it didn’t make sense to make a big deal of it like it’s bad or something.”

He admitted that he noticed your tics and traits but quickly grew used to them and continued as normal.

He thought you were perfect for him, you were sensitive to touch, and he wasn’t a touchy guy.

In the past, you would feel bad that you couldn’t touch him like most couples did. You’d force yourself to hold his hand despite the anxiety. Until he told you he wasn’t a big fan, either.

You were direct, which was a trait he respected and valued.

And he honestly wasn’t much of a conversationalist himself, so he didn’t mind the communication issues you had.

And despite you not understanding many emotions, you easily flustered him.

“Shinsou, your Quirk is so cool, you know that?”

“You did a good job. I’m proud of you.”

Cue a Shinsou with a flushed face avoiding eye contact.

Sometimes you’d think you’d embarrassed him until he tells you.

“No, I just…stuff like that makes me a little shy sometimes, that’s it.”

“You don’t like it?”

He shook his head, which he realized was probably confusing, “I don’t mind when you do it.”

Since he was pretty aware of Autism before he met you, he could guess when you had a seizure for the first time on the couch...

Which was repetitive swallowing.

A focal seizure. It wasn’t long, and it was subtle.

But he carefully watched you until it passed, “You okay?”

You waited for a moment before you nodded.

“I’m okay now.”

“If I didn’t know any better, I wouldn’t have thought anything of it.”

“People usually think of seizures as only being dramatic, obvious, and intense…but it isn’t always that way. There just has to be more people out there to teach them.”

“Yeah. Another thing this society has to change,” he picked up the remote to change the show.

“Shinsou?”

“Hm?”

“Thank you.”

Midoriya (Deku)

“Autism?... I think I heard of it.”

A few minutes later Midoriya will have a clear notebook from who knows where, writing things down like a madman.

“Oh! That explains why you do that head tilt thing a lot.”

In between the internet, he will ask you questions that are specific to you, outside of the general stuff.

He tries to ask questions sparingly so it doesn’t get overwhelming.

“They also mentioned seizures. Do you have those?”

“Yes. Sometimes.”

Even though he now understands your behavior better, he will still misunderstand you for a few moments until he remembers.

Like when your bluntness can be offensive without intending to. But trust Midoriya won’t burst into tears, he’s had much worse things said to him.

Sometimes you will misread the mood, but he’ll explain it to you.

You attempt to practice better communication skills, but he’ll assure you.

“Don’t practice too hard, [Name], you don’t need to be perfect at it. Besides, I…don’t have the best communications skills, either.”

And sometimes, Midoriya’s back and forth consistency throws you off.

But you both work to make the relationship good for the both of you.

And then he experiences a seizure experience with you for the first time.

You’re in his room at home when your muscles suddenly go rigid.

Of course, you’re used to this happening, but you can’t help the slight panic of sudden loss of control.

His first instinct is to panic, but he fights against it because he realizes you already are. He doesn't want to make it worse.

He quickly works on timing it while making sure to make you’re comfortable. He softly starts to tell you a story, his voice is calming and you start to freak out a little less.

Then, it’s finally over.

“How are you feeling?”

“Better…a little sore. But better.”

His brows furrowed as he thought, “That was a…tonic seizure?”

“Yes.”

“Before I met you, I didn’t realize there were so many different types–Hm, can I ask a few questions? So I can be better prepared, next time?” he quickly parted from you to find his spare [Name] notebook.

“You didn’t do too bad this time. But okay, go ahead.”

Bakugo

You would mask your behaviors around people. You were a hero in training, you didn’t want anyone questioning your capabilities for something you couldn’t change.

But Bakugo’s incredibly observant and picked up on a few things you let slip without realizing.

Once he’d watched you for a while, he approached you and got straight to the point. He wasn't one to beat around the bush.

“Oi. Are you Autistic?”

“Huh? Yeah.”

“Thought so.”

You were surprised Bakugo had approached you considering you actively avoided him.

You were sensitive to loud noises. You’d learned to adjust to some sounds that couldn’t be avoided as a hero, but his yelling still made you anxious as hell.

But right now, he was quiet. No yelling.

You thought that was the end of it, that he was just curious about your possible Autism…but no, he kept talking to you. He kept asking you questions.

And you didn’t mind answering them.

And along the way, you found yourselves in a relationship.

The class was wondering how in the world you tamed Bakugo, he wasn’t yelling nearly as much…when you were around, anyway.

But you didn’t do anything. Behind closed doors, he was always relaxed, his speaking tone was even, and he was gentle.

You had to learn how to understand each other.

Bakugo was emotional and buried what he felt. He would keep to himself how he was feeling. And you weren’t able to read his emotions sometimes.

So you learned to ask him.

“Hey, Bakugo.”

“Yeah?”

“How are you…feeling? You look tired, but you sound upset?”

And he learned to be more direct with his feelings, which helped you understand him better.

And sometimes, on accident, he would get a little loud, so you would ask for breaks, which he would give you.

Although Bakugo could be spontaneous, he was consistent with the things that mattered, so it made it a little easier for you to learn him.

Bakugo treated you like any other person, he didn’t treat you like Autism was something strange or bad. He was protective of you, so if anyone talked about your behaviors or appearance, he would pull them aside to go off on them.

He showed interest in your interest. He loved when you would ramble about it and he would always remember what you’d say.

He had to compromise touch, since you craved it. He was surprised, but all you said was,

“It’s actually a myth that all people on the autistic spectrum are averse to touch. Some of us like it, depends on the person.”

But he found he liked it when you cuddled with him, so he didn’t mind. It wasn’t a bad compromise.

Bakugo likes knowing things, so he’ll look stuff up and ask questions until he has a wide knowledge of Autism, your specific type, and everything about it. He learned about you outside of your Autism, your favorite foods, favorite color, any information he could get his hands on.

He paid special attention to information on your seizures.

Talked to you about them, watched videos, read books.

So when he witnessed it the first time, he was prepared.

You weren’t, since it was in the common room and most of your class was there.

Everyone was panicking, this hadn’t happened to you with them around before.

Kirishima rushed to get Bakugo from his room, let him know what’s going on.

“Shit. Is everyone panicking?” he rushed past his redheaded friend.

“I–Who wouldn’t? It was just so sudden!”

Once he made it into the room, everyone was crowded around you.

And someone looked as if they were about to try and hold you down.

“Back up! All of you!” he barked out.

“But Bakugo—”

“Stop standing there like idiots and move!” he growled, pushing past them.

He started moving things away from you and carefully checked your breathing.

“How long has it been like this?”

“N-Not long–Half a minute, maybe?”

“Okay.”

He spoke quietly to you, apologizing that he wasn’t there with you when it started, apologizing for the idiots making things worse.

“Maybe [Name] needs some water—”

He turned to Kaminari, about ready to strangle him for the suggestion, “Does it look like they can drink water right now? Does that make any sense to you?”

“Right–Right, sorry.”

“And all of you, back up some more or leave. I feel like you’re breathing down our necks,” he scoffed.

So they did, now it was just the two of you. Then you settled.

He waited for a minute, softly petting at your head until you could speak again.

“Thank you, Bakugo.”

“Huh? For what?”

“Helping. They weren’t being very helpful.”

“They’re the ‘panic first, get into action later’ types.”

“I noticed.”

“How are you feeling?”

“I need water, I think. And cuddles, too. If you’re up for it.”

Tokoyami

He honestly hadn’t noticed anything was unique about you until you told him you had Autism.

“Oh? I hadn’t noticed.”

He does ask you plenty of questions over the next few weeks whenever one comes to mind.

You find yourself fascinated by Dark Shadow, though you misunderstand some things he says to Tokoyami that make him flustered. It was always something about you.

You were also sensitive to bright lights, which made you perfect for Tokoyami. He wasn’t a fan himself.

He showed devotion to listening to you about your interest, never seeming annoyed about the same thing.

He was very uncomplicated to you.

He spoke his mind, he was to the point. If he didn’t tell you his emotions at first, he will tell you eventually.

Behind closed doors, he lets you gently pet his feathers–although they are sensitive, it relaxes you, so it’s the least he can do.

He also helps you find relaxation training, which you appreciate.

And one day, he experiences your seizure with you. He almost missed that’s what it was, since you would stare off and get confused suddenly.

He kept the environment relaxed until the moment passed.

Which you were grateful for, but then…

“Tokoyami. Let’s–Let’s take a nap.”

“That’s a good idea, [Name].”
