"The heartland"
Tumblr media
The heartland is a cultural region of the United States that includes the 20 states in the middle of the country. It's associated with mainstream or traditional values, such as economic self-sufficiency.
There is no consensus regarding the geographical boundaries of America's heartland. However, the American Midwest is the most commonly cited area as being the nation's heartland. The term may also refer to the Rust Belt, Flyover Country, and/or parts of the South.

Posts like this make me feel violent. Are you just mad because your depression era grandmothers weren't creative enough to make things out of nothing to feed huge families with such an enduring culture of family gatherings that we all think fondly of these hyper specific foods into the 21st century, whereas your sad coastal elitist families all hate each other? Have you looked at the ingredients list of a fucking smoothie at whole foods. Or a salad at sweetgreen. Sincerely fuck people who continue to shit on foods they've never even tried. Cry harder about how marshmallows aren't a major food group at your holiday dinners. Must be sad. Cry harder about how poor people with lots of mouths to feed should not feel shamed for making weird fun things out of a box of jello mix, a bag of marshmallows, and a can of fruit. Do you know how cheap these foods are? THESE ALSO ARE ACTUALLY GOOD REPRESENTATIVES OF THEIR CLASS. I would eat all of these except the one with red hots, but only bc I hate red hots.

"crazy redneck hollers about city slickers" rant probably but I don't think a lot of americans in progressive cities realize that we live in a hyper-religious country outside of those weird red backwater boondocks type places electing some republican ass hat. like they don't really follow that thought beyond "ugh, ignorant flyover states."
like dude. people live here and it's ass. it's not your fiscally conservative coworker who's cool about weed and maybe gay people but hates welfare (although he sucks, imo) running around up here. I talk about it and it seems wild to some, but I get treated like I'm nuts for thinking it's weird up here.
I cannot say "oh god," or "jesus christ" in front of many people up here and it can be hard to tell who will be weird about it. I get asked what church I go to/went to growing up (I didn't, and it can get a side-eye when I say so). people will let you know if you need to be "saved" or if you're sinning. I don't want children, by any means, for many reasons, but the response is always "you'll change your mind." I remember, as a teenager, my friends parents often felt uncomfortable that my family wasn't christian and a few wouldn't let us hang outside of school.
it's more extreme in other parts of the country, and less in others, but there's this current of christian fundamentalism underlying all of american society. and people act as though it couldn't impact them because they were raised in a relatively secular community (there are no truly secular communities in the united states imo but that's a tangent), or that they have thought about religion and rejected it without realizing how seriously our culture is based in it. it reminds me of people who say "advertising never works on me, I'm too smart to be tricked into buying a product." everyone loves to say that about themselves, that they're smarter and different but that's the point. you think you're so smart that you can never be slipped an idea subconsciously, so you're easier to fool for false immunity.
religious fundamentalism is very much still a thing here, even in progressive cities (which is another post tbh, lotta tangents here ig). but I think people who haven't been to these really heavily, explicitly religious parts of the US either think it's Brian, the fiscally conservative coworker, or some weird horror movie cult shit when it's neither. and both of those imaginings of rural conservative communities are thought-terminating. either it's just like these liberal cities but people are politely conservative, they're the same as us, or they're so different and stupid that it's not to be taken seriously. it's neither.

In recent days I’ve seen every major paper write a version of the How Did This Tragic Train Derailment Become a New Culture War story. I didn’t need to ask myself whether any of them gave the actual answer, which I think most of us know. How is it that a train derailment caused by a major GOP-donating corporation, in a state run by a Republican governor, caused at least in part by regulations rolled back by Republican President Donald Trump … well, how exactly is that a story about Democrats not caring about people in “flyover country”? The Republican crackpot investigations complex is even now prepping to hold hearings about it. The reality of the situation is that big corporations like Norfolk Southern spend millions in Washington for lax regulation and our railroad infrastructure is woefully aged and deficient — and not just for freight rail. Virtually every upgrade to the country’s railroad infrastructure and the quality of its rail stock pays dividends either in safety or efficiency. Republicans are simultaneously calling out corporations for not caring about ordinary Americans while carrying their anti-regulatory water on Capitol Hill. Democrats should run a freight train right through that contradiction. Only good things can come of it. Democrats should pound on the fact at every opportunity that the Trump White House not only rolled back those regulations but Trump literally bragged about doing so on Twitte

=UK Fans! We need your help! @lamentus1 was kind enough to give us updates on the efforts going on over the UK!=
Tumblr media
UK specific OFMD fans in groups on Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook are trying to come together to push for the BBC to air OFMD Season 2 in the UK since they haven’t done so yet!
So many UK fans can’t actually watch the second season *legally* based off a tumblr poll that @lamentus1 did recently, and a third of fans who voted can’t even watch OFMD because it’s not on in their country!
The current plans are:
Email two key people at the BBC:
Sue Deeks (Brought OFMD to the UK) --- [email protected] Charlotte Moore (Chief Content Officer ) --- [email protected] Email Prompt: if you need an example:
Send Tweets regarding wanting Season 2 to Air on BBC on twitter (same hashtags from @renewasacrew I believe but it that's incorrect please let me know!):

The ongoing twitter thread for this is here

**START OF DISCLAIMER: This whole thread on Djenkins and Taika's mother in law is fan theory at this point, read into it as you will, but think of it like tabloid news**
The most exciting and I think ... brain candy worthy today was Rhys and David posting a BTS picture of Rhys in the colonial hat/outfit. It sparked some interesting ideas on the status of season 3.
I have to say, hats off to the folks over on twitter @fowlfiend for making this connection
Earlier today, Chaos Dad, David Jenkins posted the following picture of Rhys that Rhys shared on his Instagram with a song attached to it called "I'm a Man" by Jobriath.
Tumblr media
Now, all well and good right? Rallying cry to all the crew! BUT Twitter folks think there's a deeper meaning and I'm inclined to agree.
Tumblr media
How fucking cool is that? Thank you to @lamentus1 for pointing out also that Chaos Dad's post had the "three finger" I love you which is yet another 3 today.
Tumblr media
Add to that, Taika's Instagram's been pretty quiet lately, and he happened to post a picture today of his mother-in-law @veraora on IG for her birthday, which just happens to have... 3 pigeons in it. Once again, thanks @lamentus1 for bringing this to our attention. ---also please wish VeraOra Happy birthday!
Tumblr media
Now, could all of this be just coincidence? Sure, but where's the fun in that? Seems like we're going on a treasure hunt.
**END OF DISCLAIMER: This whole thread on Djenkins and Taika's mother in law is fan theory at this point, read into it as you will, but think of it like tabloid news**

=Hashtag Updates / How you can help=
@renewasacrew Has done some cool stuff and made saveofmd.com direct to the petition site. This should help with being able to share more easily. Full thread here on tumblr
Today's Goals and Hashtags Per @renewasacrew
#ArentYouGLAAD #SaveOFMD #TheNumbersWereThere
Tumblr media
=Petition Status Updates=
Tumblr media
Petition hit 60K all!!!! GREAT JOB! Just in time for Time Square tomorrow!!
I didn't see a drastic change on a lot of the fundraisers so I'm not adding those today--- I think we've had a big day as it was with the stuff around David posting without posting about season 3.
So I thought I'd end with some more info from our lovely @TheCozyPirate on twitter, the lovely person who exposed the information about how s3 was already in preproduction. They seem to have more insight in a lot of this.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
=So if your question is, is it making a difference? Why doesn't dad just come out and say it? Here's some insight:=
Tumblr media
And this next one helps me to feel like we're still heading in the right direction. "If there were nothing viable, he would be able to say that. He would never, never let this go on if hopeless". I think is pretty uplifting.
Tumblr media
Lastly, I think you all should be damn proud of yourselves with these calls, as a former Customer Support Person, I appreciate you all so damn much for keeping it kind and polite! Stede would be proud!
Tumblr media
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
Finally-- one last thing, since today's theme on tumblr is trolls getting all up in our faces, just remember you do not have to engage with them if you don't want to. If you want to have kind discussions, and you feel up for it, go for it, but don't feel obligated to defend the community.
We all know we care, we all know we're doing a great fucking job at taking care of each other, helping awesome causes, and still having fun while doing it. You don't have to prove to anyone that you are allowed to enjoy your pirate show that means something to you and spend a few bucks to support it.
Don't let people who are struggling with their own trouble take your light. Enjoy things, have fun. You deserve it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On a lighter note to end on: I have a serious question for all of you.
Who gave this man the right to wear these fucking shorts? Good god.

It should be painfully obvious by now that We The People are on our own out here in flyover country since the Nazicrats are blatantly Anti-American and the Republicans are as useful as an ashtray on a motorcycle ... both sides have chosen to help themselves to whatever they can get away with and don't bother to hide their criminal activities ...
America will fall ... People will suffer ... No one is coming to help ...
May we all prepare both materially and spiritually for the coming Hell Storm and never forget that, in the end, everyone will have to answer for what they've done with their lives ...
... and may GOD have mercy on us all ...

Is there anything about your new location (the terrain, the local culture, the physical sites, etc) that has given you a new perspective on regional events of the War of 1812?
This a wonderful ask, thank you! I have been mulling over how to answer it all day! This ended up getting so long I put it behind a cut (I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THIS).
Tumblr media
The Maumee River, as seen from Fort Meigs Historic Site.
One thing new in my life is a heightened awareness of important rivers facilitating the movement of trade, supplies, and settlement. Particularly in the Old Northwest/current Midwest of the USA: regions that I grew up perceiving as a land-locked "flyover country."
Like, to give one example, I had a vague idea that there was a city called Fort Wayne, Indiana, but I thought it was just in the middle of a cornfield for no reason(?). But actually it's at the confluence of the St. Joseph, St. Marys, and Maumee Rivers, leading to the Great Lakes! The strategically important location is why General Anthony Wayne—that guy again—built the original fortification in 1794. I am downriver of all of this, connected to many inland waterways.
I also have a keen sense of living in the Great Black Swamp, despite how dramatically the land has been transformed by deforestation and drainage. There are the terrifying drainage ditches everywhere (the locals seem less perturbed by them), and many other signs of the natural state of the terrain—the swamp is just barely at bay. My coworkers have said "Black Swamp" unprompted in our conversations; I've seen it mentioned in local Facebook groups talking about the need for back-up sump pumps. The idea that people of northwest Ohio have no sense of history and are unaware of the Great Black Swamp isn't true at all.
I look at the pools of water that form in every hollow and think of the words of Alfred Lorrain, marching to Fort Meigs:
We had frequently to pass through what was called, in the provincialism of the frontiers, "swales"—standing ponds—through which the troops and packhorses which had preceded us had made a trail of shattered ice. Those swales were often a quarter of a mile long. They were, moreover, very unequal in their soundings. In common they were not more than half-leg deep; but sometimes, at a moment when we were not expecting it, we suddenly sank down to our cartridge-boxes.
Swale is a new word in my vocabulary, and now I see them everywhere!
Culturally, I think there is a great appreciation of history here: a very positive difference from the Chicagoland area. Even if the average local is probably not deeply into it, they have a consciousness of major historical events that have shaped their region and take pride in it. It's a lot more like New England that way.
Because of my focus on the War of 1812, I notice the absence of Indigenous people and voices—absent from historical accounts and from the demographics of Perrysburg and its environs today. I can't single out Ohio as being a uniquely violent settler-colonial state when this is ALL of the United States; but it hits different when I have this much greater familiarity with who was forcibly removed from this land, and how. The same US military leaders who fought in the War of 1812 were behind the (very much related) campaign for the removal of Native Americans from newly acquired territories, including the infamous Trail of Tears.
Once again, it's probably hypocritical for me to notice this so much, when I literally grew up on Wampanoag land where King Philip's War was fought, but here I am. Suddenly aware of General Wayne's name on everything, etc.
Tumblr media
General Wayne's spurs in the Fort Meigs Museum. Not pictured: the can of Maumee Bay Brewing Co. Fallen Timbers Ale that I am currently drinking.
I haven't had the chance to explore physical sites with historical significance beyond Fort Meigs and Fallen Timbers. I know I will get to the ruins of Fort Miamis soon, and I really want to explore a lot of wetlands in local parks and nature preserves (that will double as birdwatching excursions). I am always thinking about what this place looked like 200 years ago, and what I can see today that might still look familiar to a person from that time.
I had a great trip to the National Museum of the Great Lakes today, which is closer than I thought! Local maritime museums are also on my agenda, even if they're not specifically War of 1812-related.

Star Wars anthology series where each episode takes place on a different planet and tells a short story of some locals getting wrapped up in a terrestrial conflict suited to their culture.
Star Wars has spent a lot of time developing the international politics and religion of its galaxy but most of its actual worlds are treated like the stellar equivalent of flyover country.
"Welcome to our planet, where we have a rich culture of--" Nobody gives a shit. I'm here to stab General Grievous and then fuck off and never see you useless assholes again. Out of my way.
So I think it might be nice for fleshing out the Star Wars universe if we put down the galactic scope for a bit and spent some time on Naboo-based political drama or the life of an Utapau fisherman or a Hoth research expedition studying wampa hunting patterns or making a living with Jakku salvagers.
Just. Living in the culture of a bunch of different worlds.
