Today's Headcanon:
Most restauants don't have Braille menus, so Foggy always makes sure Matt's menu selections are taken care of first before selecting food and drinks for himself. He's become accustomed to asking Matt what he's in the mood for, before rattling off any options that he thinks Matt might be interested in. He won't browse items for himself until Matt is settled and has decided what he wants.

a silly thing
--
Foggy’s mom keeps the baby at their apartment for the first couple of weeks while Foggy tries to sort out how to manage this insane thing he’s attempting—raising a kid at the age of twenty while doing a full courseload at an Ivy League. They only drink once, a few days before Foggy’s set to move into new housing.
“Nobody’s going to judge you if you find him another home,” Matt says.
“I can’t do that,” Foggy says, immediately. “Not—I mean, you came out great, Matty, but the shit you had to go through. I can keep him safe from that.”
Matt smiles at him, feeling a little bit like crying but that’s probably the alcohol, and says, “I wish I could move with you. It would help to have two people, wouldn’t it?”
“You’d have to marry me, I think,” Foggy says, laughing then stopping abruptly when he sees the apparently very obvious look on Matt’s face. “Oh, no, Murdock. No. You’re not gonna propose out of pure Christian selflessness right now, buddy, that would be crazy.”
“It’s just paperwork,” Matt says, grinning.
“Life altering paperwork,” Foggy says, firmly, rambling, “and only one bed in the apartment and—do not get on one knee, Matt, I swear to—I can’t let you upend your life to raise a kid with me! We’re still kids, basically! Oh, Christ, you look earnest.”
“Marry me,” Matt says, very much on one knee, feeling a little bit giddy but not out of his head or anything. He’s wanted to offer this since the moment he found out Foggy would be moving out.
“You’re drunk,” Foggy says, accusingly.
“I’m tipsy at worst,” Matt says. “Marry me.”
“One bed,” Foggy says.
“Wouldn’t be the first time,” Matt says, dismissively.
“You can’t bring home hot girls,” Foggy says.
“I don’t do that now,” Matt says. “Marry me. We’ll figure all of it out.”
Foggy sighs loudly.
“Okay,” he says, throwing his hands up. “I’ll marry you.”
Matt grins and climbs back onto the bed to pull him into a hug.
“I promise I want this,” he says, softly, nervous when Foggy’s heart beats even faster than it has been.
“Thanks, buddy,” Foggy murmurs, holding him back tightly.
They get married at the courthouse and Matt kisses Foggy because it feels like the right thing to do for more reasons than one. Foggy just laughs and kisses him back, cupping Matt’s face in his hands, and neither of them say anything about it. They just go get lunch and break the news to Foggy’s mother who looks extremely tired but doesn’t object much and spend the day there with the baby.
Sam is, according to Foggy, the cutest baby to ever exist—blonde and giant brown eyes and chubby cheeks—and, also according to Foggy, fascinated by Matt.
“Seriously,” Foggy says, laughing. “He hasn’t stopped looking at you since we got here.”
“That’s a good sign, right?” Matt asks, grinning when Sam grabs for his glasses, sliding them up higher on his head. “I mean, I’m pretty fascinated with him, too.”
“Yeah,” Foggy says, softer and a little shaky, “it’s a really good sign.”
“You okay?” Matt asks, adjusting Sam in his arms when he starts grasping at his shirt, holding him close.
“God, yeah, I’m fine,” Foggy says, laughing. “You’re just. . .you’re a really good friend, Matt. That’s all.”
“Hey, I’m just in it for the tax write-offs,” Matt says, flatly, pressing a kiss to Sam’s extremely soft head and grinning happily when Foggy laughs. He knows this is weird but he can’t imagine a world where he just let Foggy go off and struggle on his own. Not when they could be together.
Foggy’s mom teaches him how to change a diaper that night. That part’s rough. But he can deal with it.
The first day in the apartment is a mess of Nelsons helping them move in and finally just the three of them, equally exhausted, collapsed on the uncomfortable school supplied couch. Foggy puts Sam down and then they go to bed together for the first time. There’s a confusing period of about one minute before Foggy says, “I know you’re a little spoon,” and Matt says, “. . .yeah, okay,” and then it’s the most comfortable sleep that Matt’s had. . .ever. Even with the baby waking up four times and them taking turns checking on him.
“I think this is going to work,” he says, over breakfast a few weeks in.
“Yeah?” Foggy asks.
“I mean, I think Sam might like me better, which could be awkward,” Matt says, lips twitching, “since you’re his dad and all.”
“You’re kinda going to be his dad, too,” Foggy says. “Depending on how long we do this. But that’s a conversation I don’t like to think about which we probably should have already had—the how long part, at least.”
“As long as you want me,” Matt says, immediately.
“Well, a kid is. . .forever,” Foggy says.
“I have forever,” Matt says, blushing suddenly and turning away to try to hide it. Because he means it—really, really means it. “If you—if you want forever.”
“Matt, you’ll probably want to meet someone and get married eventually,” Foggy says, cautiously. “Someone you actually want, I mean.”
They already got married, moved in together and are raising a child. It’s not a leap. Matt has to remind himself of this several times, before he says, “I already did that, Foggy.”
Foggy’s heartbeat is crazy and Sam decides to start screaming at the same time.
“I’ll get him,” Matt says, quickly.
Sam is happy and cooing in his arms when Foggy comes in and asks, softly, “You were being serious, right? You have feelings for me? . . .forever feelings?”
“I don’t think I knew it until we kissed at the courthouse,” Matt says, thinking back to the feeling he had after Foggy kissed him back. How everything made sense even though they were being insane. How it felt like they should have been doing it all along. “But I do, I want you. And I want to be. . .I want to be Sam’s dad.”
It smells a little bit like tears but Foggy just carefully leans up, with Sam between them, to kiss Matt softly.
“Let’s do this,” he says.
“We’re going to lose him in a snowdrift,” Matt says.
Several months have passed and they’ve been exhausting and difficult and perfect ones and now there’s snow on the ground and a puffy baby snowsuit purchased by Marci who refused to hold Sam because she finds babies to be haunting cautionary tales but does like buying him clothes. He feels like a pillow when Matt picks him up.
“It’s bright green!” Foggy says. “We’d spot him eventually. C’mon.”
When they tramp outside onto the lawn, Matt says, grumpily, “His cheeks are getting cold.”
“Just because you hate snow and joy doesn’t mean our son has to,” Foggy says, laughing then pausing at the look on Matt’s face. “What did I say?”
“Our son,” Matt says, smiling. “I don’t think you’ve ever said it like that before.”
“This is a good weird and misty face, then?” Foggy asks.
“Yeah,” Matt says, nodding.
“Well, I bet our son will love snow,” Foggy says, warmly. “Let’s sit him down.”
As soon as Sam’s tiny hand brushes against the snow, he starts screaming and Matt looks smug.
“How does he take after you?” Foggy asks, huffing. “You’re not even blood related.”
“He’s just a very smart baby,” Matt says, hefting him back up onto his hip.
“And you’re really fucking cute together,” Foggy says. “I’m taking pictures.”
Matt’s smile is more real than its ever been.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frank and Matt are arguing. Again. Normally, these occasions aren’t too bad. Normally, it’s just a disagreement they partake in or a bit of banter. The duo are much friendlier now- perhaps, even friends, although neither one would ever say so. They’re each too prideful for that.
The pair frequently rib into each other and trade barbs- it’s simply how their dynamic works-, but today, it’s different. Today is a day like before. Before when there was only pure dislike and unfettered animosity between them, and they’d exchange blows that aimed to bruise instead of words that aimed to rile up the other.
They’ve gotten into their fair share of arguments, but those squabbles always ended before they could get too ugly. Either Foggy, Karen, or you would deescalate the situation by redirecting the conversation towards a different topic or Matt and Frank would stop talking mid-argument and leave, taking time to cool off before returning back to the group gathering with a more level head.
It’s never been this bad.
Truthfully, you don’t even know how it got to this point, ignorant to what sparked this particular argument. All you know is that the situation has gotten wildly out of hand, escalating so quickly before your very eyes that you can hardly wrap your head around what’s currently happening.
Standing toe-to-toe in the middle of Matt’s living room, Matt and Frank look like they’re seconds away from engaging in an all out brawl.
“Back off, Red,” Frank says in a low, dangerous tone that sends a shiver down your spine and makes the hairs on your arm stand on end. You’ve never heard Frank sound like this before, his tone so dark and threatening, and you know that the man standing before you know is the man that strikes fear into the heart of others as the Punisher.
Off to the side of the main room of Matt’s apartment, you stand between Karen and Foggy as you all fruitlessly attempt to get Matt and Frank to knock it off. Unconsciously, you scoot closer to Foggy, instinctively seeking the comfort of your dear friend. The blond notices the subtle movement out of the corner of his eyes and places a gentle hand on your shoulder.
“You alright?” He whispers into your ear, without looking at you. His blue eyes stay trained on Matt and Frank, unwilling to allow his gaze to stray for even a moment- unsure of what may happen if he does so.
You take a deep breath in, trying to calm the racing of your heart before shakily exhaling out. “I’m alright, Fog,” you lie. You are definitely not alright, but you don’t wish to weigh down your friend with your silly worries, especially not when there are more pressing matters at hand like stopping your other friends from physically tearing into each other. “I just don’t like seeing them argue,” you admit, which is true. You hate watching two of the people you love most in this world spew such hateful words at each other. It hurts.
“Me neither,” Foggy sighs, sounding impossibly tired for a brief moment. For some reason, it makes you feel guilty. You’re not the only one who dislikes when Matt and Frank fight (you know for a fact that neither Foggy or Karen enjoy their verbal collisions), but you feel like you take it harder than them, and that idea makes you feel bad.
Foggy squeezes your shoulder before letting his hand drop back down to rest by his side, and you find it easier to breathe, even if it’s just ever so slight.
The sound of Matt raising his voice startles you from your thoughts. Your breath hitches and your chest tightens uncomfortably when Frank’s voice rises to match Matt’s in volume.
You don’t who it is that begins to all out shout- whether it’s Matt or Frank-, but it doesn’t matter. The drastic change in volume makes you instinctively flinch. Hard. The action goes unnoticed by the two yelling (they’re much too engrossed in their verbal clashing to pay you any mind), but not by the two by your side. They exchange glances, looking at you in between them before looking at each other. They don’t need words to communicate what they’re thinking.
Your head swims- the loud angry voices of your loved ones amplified in the depths of your mind. You’re so lost in thought that you jump in place when Karen places a careful hand on your arm to garner your attention. Her expression softens when she sees how you react.
“Hey, do you want to hang somewhere else while Foggy and I sort this out?” Karen quietly asks, barely audible over Matt and Frank’s overlapping voices. Karen’s voice is gentle and kind and completely unlike the sharp and scathing tones of your friends, who are locked in their heated stand off just a few feet away. With the hand clasped around your arm, she rubs small comforting circles into your skin.
You want to deny her suggestion, to assure her that you’re okay, but when you open your mouth to respond to Karen, the words get stuck in your throat. How frustrating. You close your mouth, pressing your lips tightly together, and roughly swallow- trying to dislodge them. You’re ready to lie to Karen, even if the assurance will taste acrid on your tongue, but a roaring yell- louder than anything you’ve heard so far- makes you change your mind.
“Y-yeah, I’ll be on the roof,” you stutter out. If you could think more clearly, you’d feel embarrassed for tripping over your words, but all you could think about in this moment was getting as far as you could from the yelling.
Karen gives you the most comforting smile she can muster, but it’s strained around the edges. “I’ll go up and get you when this is dealt with,” she promises. Before you can leave, flee as far as you can from the scene, Karen squeezes your arm and gives you a look. “If you need me for any reason, call me.”
Despite your current state, the corner of your lips curls up into something that almost resembles a smile. You’re thankful to have a friend like Karen in your life. “I will, Kare,” you place your hand over the one she has on your arm, “Promise.”
Satisfied with your reply, Karen releases her easy grip on you, allowing you to book it towards Matt’s front door. As soon as you’re out the door, out of the apartment, you immediately make your way to the staircase that leads to the rooftop.
A sense of urgency overcomes you as if something truly terrible will happen if you don’t make it to the roof in time, even if there is no time limit, no countdown. The arguing, the senseless yelling, has jumbled your thoughts, leaving you feel discombobulated. You cannot shake off your irrationality, cannot even see that you are being irrational. You increase your stride, skipping over every other step as you run up them as fast as you can without tripping over your feet and falling flat on your face.
"Why is this so damn heavy?” you mumble to yourself once you make it to the top of the staircase, grunting as you push your shoulder against the rooftop access door. You push and push and stumble, nearly falling over when the door suddenly flings open beneath your weight. You’re quick to stabilize yourself on your feet, almost tripping over nothing when when the door loudly slams behind you, effectively startling you.
On shaky legs, you speed walk over to the edge of the roof, curling your hands around the concrete barrier meant to prevent one from falling off the building and tumbling down to meet their untimely end. Loose gravel digs into your palm, biting into the skin as you tighten your grip. It hurts, but the pain is minimal. So minimal, in fact that you could easily ignore it, but instead, you focus on it. The slight pain forces you into the moment, grounding you into the present. Just like how the brisk air on your face is cold, stealing your body’s warmth the longer you stand out in the open, but it still feels good because you can feel it.
You take a few deep breaths- inhaling in, holding your breath, and exhaling out before repeating the cycle. You do it over and over again until your brain feels less foggy, and you can actually think relatively clearly.
A tsunami tide of shame and embarrassment crashes over you as you think about how you reacted to Matt and Frank arguing. It was stupid of you to get so worked up over it. Utterly unreasonable of you. You may not like it when people raise their voices and shout, but you’re not sure there’s anybody who does like it. You didn’t have to run off like a scared little kid just because Matt and Frank raised their voices. You weren’t even on the receiving end of their yelling for crying out loud. Your reaction speaks volumes of how truly pathetic you are.
The sound of the door to the rooftop swinging open immediately makes you tense up, jolting you from your downward spiral of self-pity. You turn your head and look over your shoulder, expecting to see Karen, who’s presumably come to get you, but to your surprise, you see Matt and Frank.
The tension in your body doesn’t dissipate as it normally would when you're greeted with the sight of two of your dearest friends. Instead, you go even more rigid, your body wound up even tighter than before as the pair come closer to you. You can still recall the sound of them of screaming, how rough and venomous their voices sounded as they spat vitriol at each other. The memory bounces around in your mind like a pinball machine.
Frank’s dark eyes stay trained on you, scanning your face and body as he observes your facial expression and body language. One glance at you is all it takes for him to stop in his footsteps, digging the heels of his black combat boots into the dusty ground, and hold out an arm to prevent Matt from approaching you any further.
Matt opens his mouth- ready to protest-, but when Frank whispers for him to listen in that gruff tone of his, the brunet presses his lips together and inclines his head towards you, listening to the roaring of your pulse and the swift beating of your heart in your chest. Matt holds his hands up, palms facing you as if he’s placating a cornered animal.
“Sweetheart,” Matt softly says, his tone completely different than it was when he was arguing with Frank, “Is it okay for us to come closer?”
You turn your body around, away from the concrete ledge, to face them. Your lips part to reply, but nothing comes out as you hesitate.
“You can say no.” Your eyes dart from Matt’s face to Frank’s. His previously hard expression softens when your eyes meet his. “It’s alright if you want us to stay over here.”
“No, it’s okay.” You shake your head. “You can…you can come closer,” you say, but the words are unsteady on your tongue, coming out as clumsy, as if you’re unsure of them.
A furrow forms between Matt’s brows, but he chooses to listen to you, taking slow steps towards you. Frank follows his lead, broadcasting his movements so as to not startle you in any way. They both stop a good few feet away from you, not keen on pushing your limits.
“Where are Foggy and Karen?” you ask after a lapse of awkward silence falls over you three.
“They’re inside the apartment,” Matt quickly answers. His tongue darts out of his mouth to wet his bottom lip. “Do you want them here?” The instead tacked on the end of that question goes unsaid but you can still hear it.
“No,” you rush out, making Frank raise a brow at you. You heat up under his gaze and avert your eyes away from duo to look out at the skyline. Looking out at the cityscape is safe. You can’t embarrass yourself that way. You clear your throat. “No, it’s alright.”
You may be shaken up from what happened earlier, but you’re not afraid of the men standing in front of you. The shouting frightened you, yes, you’ll admit it, but not them. Never them. You know that neither Frank nor Matt would ever hurt you. You want to make sure that they know you know that.
The familiar sound of your name rolling off of Frank’s tongue reaches your ears. “Would you look at me for a moment?”
You peel your eyes from the dreary but comforting view from Matt’s corner of Hell’s Kitchen and shift your gaze onto Frank’s face. His expression is tight. Below his set of dark brows, which are slightly pinched together, his eyes are narrowed at you in a way that makes you feel small. The corners of his lips dip downward, marking his face with a frown.
Frank stares at you, analyzing you like you’re a specimen beneath a microscope. You release the breath you were unknowingly withholding when the hard edges of his face smoothens out, the tight set of his jaw disappearing.
“‘M sorry,” Frank says, gruff but earnest. Your eyes widen at the sudden apology falling from Frank’s lips. “For uh for scaring you like that. Red and I got so caught up in our shit that we didn’t realize we were making you feel bad.”
“You didn’t scare me,” you blurt out, panicky. Frank gives you a skeptical look, clearly not believing you. Meanwhile, Matt’s brows rise up to his hairline, shocked that your heartbeat indicates you’re telling the truth. “The yelling freaked me out, but you guys specifically didn’t scare me,” you clarify, “I could never be afraid of you guys. It could have been anyone yelling, I would have reacted in the same way,” you ramble, clenching and unclenching your hands into fists to release your nervous energy.
“Then, we’re sorry for yelling, sweetheart,” Matt gently says, kindly cutting you off in the midst of your anxious babbling. “Frank and I are adults. We should have handled our,” Matt pauses, searching for the right term to describe their verbal (almost physical) altercation, “disagreement in a more mature manner.”
“I’m sorry too.” You rub the back of your neck when both Matt and Frank turn their head toward you, matching expressions of confusion on their faces. “I’m sorry for freaking out like that. It was dumb of me to get all worked up just because you guys raised your voices,” you let your head drop as you laugh. The sound is hollow and full of self-deprecation. “It was stupid of me,” you bitterly say, staring holes into the ground.
“Don’t say that.” The firmness of Frank’s voice makes you jerk your head up. His eyes are hard, but not unkind when you meet his unwavering gaze. “Wasn’t stupid or dumb of you to react like that, so don’t say it was.”
The harshness of his tone makes you shrink slightly, even if you know that Frank isn’t upset with you.
“What Frank is trying to say,” Matt turns his head towards Frank, brows furrowed in blatant displeasure at the man’s less-than-gentle tone. “Is that you have nothing to apologize for, sweetheart. You shouldn’t feel bad for reacting in a completely valid way.”
“Okay,” you say in a small voice. You don’t quite believe Frank and Matt, but you don’t want to argue with them. You’ve had more than enough of arguing for today.
“Okay,” Matt repeats, wetting his bottom lip with his tongue. He knows you don’t believe them, but he won’t push the matter. Not right now. Maybe later, at a more appropriate time, Matt will talk to you about it, but you don’t need him pressing you about it right now.
“Do you want to go back down to the apartment now” He angles his head towards the door on the roof that connects to his apartment, questioning. “Or stay up on the roof?”
Your eyes drift from Matt and Frank to the city’s skyline. The day has passed you by, quicker than you realized, because the sun is setting beneath the horizon already, washing the sky in a melody of red and orange hues.
You turn to press your front against the concrete barrier and stare out at the horizon.
“Can we stay out here? Just for a little while longer,” you quietly ask, your words tinged with a plea as if Frank or Matt would deny your request.
“Course, we can.” Frank takes a slow step towards you, closely watching you for any indication that you’re uncomfortable with the decrease in distance between you. When he finds nothing, he takes a few more steps until he’s by your side. Matt trails after Frank, taking his place on the other side of you.
Both of them are close enough that you can feel the body heat radiating off of them, but far enough away to not crowd or overwhelm you. It makes you smile, how considerate of you they are. You’re lucky to have friends like them in your life.
Gently, you lean to the side to brush your upper arm against Matt’s before doing the same to Frank. I forgive you, the action silently says.
Matt shifts slightly until he is so near to you that his arm is flush against yours. Warmth emanates from his body, making you sigh in contentment. On the other side of you, Frank shuffles, moving closer to you as well. His shoulder gently knocks into you, prompting you to lean against him. Thank you, they soundlessly reply, we are undeserving of your forgiveness.
You sag against Frank, your body going lax as you let your head fall and rest against his shoulder. Your knuckles brush against Matt’s, the touch feathery-light before he gently slips his hand into yours. The tension in your frame finally unravels like a spool of loose thread, and you feel like you can breathe properly now that you’re comfortably sandwiched between two of the most important people in your life.

10 Characters, 10 Fandoms Tag
I’ve been tagged a lot by so many wonderful people for this, and I’ve finally remembered!!! Thank you to @pastafossa @little-miss-dilf-lover @hailey-murdock @theradioactivespidergwen as always🥰🥰
Matt Murdock
Tumblr media
My current obsession, my sweet little baby. He needs all the hugs and all the love. I’d let him do pretty unspeakable things to me. It also made me put two and two together that he was one of my first loves (Tristan in Stardust).
Loki Laufeyson
Tumblr media
Oh, Loki, you will always hold a very special place in my heart. Mischievous in every possible way. All I want is to braid your hair and kiss your head. A hurt soul that just wants to be loved—and you always will be in my fics and in my writing world.
Steve Rogers
Tumblr media
One of my men out of time that just wants peace, and the first character I really started to write a lot of fics for—some won’t ever be posted, others in my old, long-deleted blog from middle/high school. A strong moral compass that guides him toward after sacrifice in his search for calm, and even with his ending in Endgame, I still don’t feel that he truly got it. Deserves better.
Bucky Barnes
Tumblr media
My other man out of time in search for peace. Emotional scar tissue as thick as his stubborn head. Deserves the world ten times over, and will always be loved in my fics.
Foggy Nelson
Tumblr media
My sweetheart. My golden retriever. My hype man. My guy to always tell it straight. Absolutely precious, and one of my favorite characters to write. I definitely need to write him more and write for him more.
Steven Grant/Marc Spector/Jake Lockley
Tumblr media
Deserve all the kisses. I have so much fun writing for them and exploring their personalities, and I don’t think there’s much I wouldn’t give for one of their hugs and more.
Pietro Maximoff
Tumblr media
The first man I wrote a little fanfic blurb for. Oh, how you opened up a new world for me. I owe you a great debt, and you deserved far better than what Marvel did to you.
Peter Parker
Tumblr media
My first favorite superhero from when I was like four. Don’t make me choose which incarnation of him is my favorite. He’s just a lil guy. Look at him. He’s too pure for this world.
Frank Castle
Tumblr media
I didn’t get it for a while, but now I do. I’m not gonna elaborate on that, so use your imagination on that.
Clark Kent
Tumblr media
I have a thing for the morally gray, but I have just as big of a thing for the himbo/golden retriever men. Clark is the golden retriever energy I deserve. Don’t even get me started about how bad I had it for him when I was like eight watching these reruns.

This has been itching at me but how do you think Murderdock would display affection in any capacity?
Oh, anon. Are you ready to join me on a voyage of soul searching and navel gazing? Because that's where you have sent me with this seemingly simple question.
For starters, we are venturing into the territory of personal headcanons and subjective judgements, simply because we don't see this character in a purely romantic or even sentimental exchange. But I assume that's why you asked this question in the first place. I have spent a lot of time (too much, probably) dissecting the few heavily loaded lines of dialogue and context clues, as well as using what we know of Matt's relationships in the garden variety universes.
But I think the main answer to this question lies in examining the significant relationships he does have with other people.
First off, Cindy Moon:
Tumblr media
Now you may be saying to yourself, "This looks like a romantic relationship to me, case closed!" but A. I don't think that it is and 2. You asked how Murderdock would show affection, and I don't think that's what we're witnessing here. Though at the time, it's easy enough for the reader to think this is some kind of serious romance, Murdock later tells Gwen that he essentially has an arrangement with Cindy Moon. Since SILK represents the only major rival to the Hand's endeavors in the West, he's found it advantageous to "keep his enemies closer". Even this visit isn't a social call, he's come specifically to ask Cindy for more isotopes to help fuel Gwen's powers.
Everything about this scene, his dramatic entrance, flippant dialogue, overbearing cologne is classic Murderdock. He's showboating, putting on a performance for an audience, in this case, Cindy. His demeanor around her is no different than what the rest of the world sees. I wouldn't go so far as to say he feels nothing for Cindy, but I don't know that I'd call it affection.
So let's move on to someone who gets an inside view...
Otomo:
Tumblr media
"Otomo" is literally "companion" in Japanese. Whether this is the man's name or simply his job title, we never learn, but suffice to say he has filled this role for Murdock for long enough that they have a unique rapport. Otomo is allowed to speak candidly around Murdock, even when it's bad or disappointing news. He is someone that Matt trusts on some level, at least enough to let him closer than most other people, and part of that probably has to do with the fact that Otomo very likely already knows a great deal about Matt's past, at least from the point that he joined the Hand. Even if Otomo doesn't understand Matt's motivations, he does understand his motus operandi. Otomo likely doesn't know why Matt has an interest in Spider-Woman, he almost certainly doesn't know about Matt's suicidal thoughts, but he is also content not questioning anything his master does. This puts him somewhere between an employee and a friend, but I wouldn't say Otomo gets to see Matt's true face either, despite their history.
Speaking of history...
DA Nelson:
Tumblr media
My personal favorite relationship in this universe (and let's face it, all of them, when it comes to Matt Murdock) is the one between Matt and Foggy, even though it's been twisted into something toxic and yet shockingly recognizable. Just as they were in 616, Matt and Foggy were roommates in law school, and it seems their association has continued in some form since then. Now that Foggy is District Attorney, Matt seems to have no qualms about asking for "mutually beneficial" favors, which clearly seem to come at great expense to Foggy, if only because Foggy actually gives a damn about what other people think.
I chose this panel because of one line that I have spent so much time thinking about: "Just like always... I'm trying to give you what you want, Matt." This tells us that Matt has a long history of putting pressure on Foggy, and Foggy has gone out of his way to deliver whatever it is Matt wants from him. To me, that means that Foggy has proven to be a reliable asset time and time again. That may not speak to a romantic relationship in the present, but I do think it's the sort of thing that could spawn "fond" feelings in the charcoal briquet of Murderdock's heart, although perhaps more akin to what someone feels for a well trained pet.
The interesting thing about this dynamic as we see it in the comic is that, as always, Matt doesn't actually hide his intentions from Foggy. He is very casual in the way he approaches him and speaks plainly about the rules he wants Foggy to bend. Matt shows his fangs to Foggy, but it is Foggy who makes the mistake of thinking he won't bite. Foggy trusts Matt far too much, but because of that Matt knows he's on a short leash, unlikely to wander. Of course, things change once Matt meets...
Gwen Stacy:
Tumblr media
Now you might be sitting here and going, what, what WHAt? This is a question about affection and Gwen and Murderock are enemies. Where are you headed with this, you coco crazy pants? But hear me out on this one-
Gwen thinks Murderdock is the villain, her villain, and certainly, we the readers do as well. But Matt? Gwen is his special interest. He's not opposed to what Gwen does or who she is. Unlike Spider-Man and his villains, Gwen didn't wrong Matt in the past or steal his research or destroy his criminal empire. Matt isn't out for revenge, he doesn't want to kill Gwen. All he wants is to prove that they are, on a fundamental level, the same.
In this universe, Matt plays a role not unlike the one Mephisto plays in 616 when it comes to Spider-Man. The "basically the devil" has an obsession with corrupting Spider-Man because we can't have nice things, don't ask me. Similarly, Matt wants to break Gwen, but only by giving her so much power that she has no choice but to be corrupted by it, as he felt he was by his.
How does he plan to accomplish this? By worming his way into her life, devising scenarios that put Gwen in increasingly desperate situations and watching her squirm. He continues to up the stakes, calling in favors, giving his enemies valuable tools to manipulate them into their places on his chess board, all to force Gwen's hand and bring about his downfall. Speaking of hands, what the hell does the Hand even do in New York? I have no idea, and neither do you, because Matt sure as hell isn't minding his business, because he's obsessed with Gwen.
So! What does this mean when it comes to the answer of your question, oh so patient and gracious anon?
First of all, I don't think there's any chance that Murderdock is going to show affection (platonic or romantic) in a "normal" way. No bouquets of roses, no fancy dinners, no calls to hang out, no hugs. Part of this is because openly showing his genuine emotions is just not how Matt works. He is at his core a performer, and he is almost always "on". Those few rare moments that his true self shows through would be considered vulnerabilities to Matt, and it's hard to know how he might get to a point where he is willing to show them to another person. (One he wasn't about to kill, anyway.)
I also think we have to consider that like most Matt Murdocks, Matt-65 has experienced a great deal of loss. His mother, father, even Stick. but as opposed to Matt of 616 or the Netflix series, this loss isn't characterized by abandonment. His mother didn't choose to leave him. Stick didn't consider him an unworthy pupil. They didn't leave, they were taken. That means this is not a Matt who is concerned with the feeling that he wasn't enough to make people stay, he is concerned with the idea that if he does care about someone, outside forces could take them away from him. And if he did come to care for someone, that would need to be prevented.
I think, if Matt did feel affection for someone, it would be a hell of a long time before that person knew it, because whatever he did wouldn't include many of the typical signs. Maybe it involves secretly scrutinizing the people they interact with, or vetting and disposing of professional contacts, all without the person of his attention being any the wiser.
This might evolve into Matt just... being there. As we've seen with all of these examples, Matt is interacting with each of these people because he wants something from them, whether it's service or personal satisfaction. If Matt started hanging around someone with no ulterior motive, then I think that would be very telling. (I am reminded of cats who just show up at random houses and decide their residents are suitable hosts and end up living there.)
I don't think gifts would be material, because he is not shown to be a particularly materialistic person. (His penthouse is basically empty, he wears basic suits until he starts fashioning himself into a caricature of a villain for Gwen.) I think they would be gifts of service that he would absolutely not mention, though he would relish when the other person discovered them (though they likely wouldn't know how they came to be.) Imagine something like someone lamenting that their favorite band was on tour, but the dates in their city weren't going to work out for them, only to find out a week later that the band caught ill and had to reschedule some shows, which now worked out very well for them. How lucky! (How orchestrated, more like.)
I think we might even consider a bit of arrested development in this area, because while Matt is incredibly adept at playing a part and showing exactly the face he wants to to the world, he is woefully inexperienced at expressing genuine emotions. I think it's safe to say he'd make a bit of a mess of things at first before the recipient of his emotions was able to make sense of it all.

Ship it? ................................
MattFoggy GO XD
1. What made you ship it?
In all honesty... I watched Nelson v. Murdock and got to the line “really, really good-looking guy” and screamed HE’S BI and then the thought of Foggy having an unrequited crush on Matt was too sad to exist in my brain so I just went “no they’re in love actually”. I now have canon citations that it’s requited, but initially it was purely an act of my love for Foggy Nelson and desire for his happiness.
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
I love how clearly important they are to each other, whether you see it as platonic or romantic. Even if they pull apart from each other, they always spring back together in the end. I love how unique their dynamic is, especially in superhero media, where civilian characters are tossed aside all the time; Foggy stays, and I think it’s because there’s something lovely about him and Matt together that draws people in. I love that Matt is genuinely this scary kick-ass guy, but Foggy just thinks of him as “oh yeah that’s my best friend” first and foremost. I love that Matt is unequivocally pro-Foggy, that he respects his intelligence and skill and thinks the world of him. I love that you can see them bring out the best in each other (or the worst, in Earth-65, lmao). I also love the fandom, because like... It’s full of very nice and lovely people. :)
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Uhhhhhh... I... Don’t know? What are the unpopular opinions...? I’ve definitely disagreed with other people, or preferred a different dynamic, but idk what’s actually popular.

@dollsome-does-tumblr does this and opened it up to anyone and I am feeling chatty today SO!
Because I co-write a lot with my lovely wife, I might answer some questions including those co-written stories, or I might not, depends on how I feel when I get there.
name:
Megan but I go by Lentils most places on the internet, Shadowcrawler over on AO3
fandoms:
at the moment: MCU, especially Agents of SHIELD and Daredevil; Terminator: Dark Fate; Halt and Catch Fire. Oh and I wrote Dollhouse fanfics a thousand years ago. Sometimes I will watch a movie/show and think “those two girls should be gay” and bang out 2k of fic about it and then never write for that fandom again. (I THOUGHT this was going to be HACF but as it turns out, no, it’s not done with me yet.)
where you post:
AO3, at Shadowcrawler. I also have a tumblr @lentils-writes where theoretically I post links to fics/advertise them in the tags, because I used to be real precious about not putting porn on this blog, but fuck it.
most popular multi-chapter fic:
Co-written, it’s definitely mallverse, which is I think the reason most writers definitely hate us because it’s very long and there are a lot of tags lmao. The problem is that every tagged character HAS shown up in a significant fashion at some point so we can’t just...untag them! It doesn’t update weekly anymore because we’re exhausted by life lmao so at least there’s that???
As for a multi-chapter fic that was just me, I don’t tend to do that so much, so actually it’s say you will, my 3-chapter Endgame fix-it where Clint dies instead of Natasha and Natasha and Laura have a past. It actually has over 1000 hits which is very exciting! I feel like it’s...niche in a way that is frustrating but understandable lol. I put a lot of my heart into it and some people really liked it, so that’s gratifying.
favorite story you’ve written so far:
Co-written, I think our SHIELD Dollhouse AU is very underrated for the amount of work we put into it. Author bias evident here because I love Dollhouse warts and all, and it’s a lot of fun translating episode plots as well as the general trajectory of the show into stuff that will work with SHIELD characters. We don’t just rewrite episodes, we really try and rework them as needed. Also it features both Skimmons and my beloved rarepair Bobbi/Kara, though of course they won’t get together until later.
Of my own stuff, I’m still really really proud of the AU where Kara Palamas didn’t die. I think that was a pretty severe misstep of the show and I think I did a good job of fixing it. (I haven’t forgotten Kara, promise!)
fic you were nervous to post:
lolololol I wrote some uh. Terminator pornography last year and. They are very porny! I had co-written a bunch of smut obviously, but that was the first time I’d posted like, PWP all by myself on purpose??? and that was TERRIFYING. Also I was very nervous to post the Engame fix-it because that was my own personal goodbye/tribute to Natasha.
how you choose your titles:
They are always either song lyrics or jokes (such as Three Lawyers and a Baby, my Daredevil Accidental Baby Acquisition fic). My WIP docs are always titled either obvious shit like “RoseJannah horse girls” or memes like “what if we belonged to a fire cult and we fucked haha just kidding unless...?” or “Morgan has two mommies.”
do you outline?:
B and I typically outline for the co-written fics, although it’s more often chapter-by-chapter outlines since that’s how we write them. On occasion we’ve fully planned multi-chapter stuff out in advance but that’s less common. Oh and the one-shots are nearly always outlined as well, just to keep ourselves organized.
When I have written planned multi-chapter fics in the past I have used outlines - particularly for the Kara one and I had to do that for the SHIELD Kill Bill AU because I was trying to follow the format of the movie. For things that are allegedly supposed to be one-shots I almost never outline, which turns out to be a terrible idea when they inevitably balloon beyond my control and become 45k like say you will. That one, I wrote out a list of scenes I thought needed to be in it and then I wrote about 75% of those scenes and then I wrote a bunch more scenes I hadn’t planned for. Don’t be like me, kids!
complete fics:
According to AO3, 89 as of right now. Uh, you do not want me to list all of them, here’s a link, I guess!
in progress:
I don’t understand what the difference is between this question and the WIP questions lmao help????
posted WIPs that I have active plans to continue at this time:
Cowritten: mallverse as I said, and its femslash smut oneshots spinoff and character flashbacks spinoff and older characters/teachers spinoff (these get updated, uh, irregularly), the first half of a Piper/Snowflake SHIELD s7 fic that we are planning on finishing the second half of soonish, SHIELD Dollhouse AU, SHIELD Teen Beach AU, SHIELD Buffy AU. You may notice a pattern!
By myself, I have: Have Your Elf a Merry Little Christmas, a Terminator Hallmark Christmas fic that I ambitiously posted the first chapter of in 2019 and then lost steam immediately (I am going to go back to it sooner or later bc I had some cute ideas for it); the SHIELD Fate of the Furious AU that has one chapter to go and which I do intend on finishing eventually; Three Lawyers and a Little Lady, the Daredevil Accidentally Baby Acquisition AU that is literally just cute kidfic and poly avocados and which I have a bunch of ideas for and just need to buckle down and finish some.
posted WIPs that I have given up on:
Lol so there’s a Dollhouse Caroline/Bennett Doctor Who AU that I wrote purely as idfic and which nobody ever cared about except me, and I think that ship has sailed! RIP darlings. I also had an ongoing Skimmons series waaaay back when where I posted oneshots that were like missing scenes or gay readings for each s1 episode, and I just feel like it would be inauthentic to even try and finish it at this point. (It does include the first ever Skimmons fic to be posted on AO3! Really truly, there’s one fic that shows up as older but it’s an ongoing fic and was updated with the tag way after I posted mine.)
exchange fics due soon/unrevealed:
I haven’t done an exchange since like 2015 lololol I am so bad at them. I am currently working on finishing up my MCU Femslash bingo card, very late, and I do have plans for almost all of the remaining squares!
WIPs that live in my fanfic folder and are incomplete and who knows when they’ll be finished:
“RoseJannah horse girls,” which has been put on hold temporarily but is literally just Rose and Jannah being gay while riding orbaks
half of a Daisy/Gwen fic from Marvel Rising because I know they’re not making any more of those but I stg those two were really gay
multiple fics about Elise Nelson-Page including: avocados Halloween with smol Elise, Aunt Elektra very reluctantly taking smol Elise shopping until she realizes smol Elise also likes weapons (she buys her a fake katana), Uncle Frank is a pushover and spoils the shit out of Elise, and baby Elise has a high fever and everyone freaks out but then she gets better and smile at them for the first time (inspired by baby me lol).
coming soon/not yet started:
“Morgan has two mommies,” yet another Endgame fix-it where Maya Hansen did not die in Iron Man 3 and she resurfaces and she and Pepper kiss and eventually she adopts Morgan
Claire and Colleen go on a nice date to get coffee/tea where Danny doesn’t interrupt them goddammit
Bobbi/Kara Warehouse 13 AU which is sort of like “For the Team” but gayer ft. grappling hook
X-Men: Evolution Tabby/Amara fluff
Cameron/Donna character study disguised as smut
Grace proposes to Dani with a ring made out of the metal from her power source and Carl officiates the wedding
Dani gets horny watching Grace eat a peach and jerks off and Grace ends up hearing her and then they fuck (I have been calling this “the peach fic” in my head but I gotta stop being delicate about it lmfao it is just porn)
B and I have plans to do a Nico/Karolina Jasper in Deadland AU but we keep forgetting
I MUST WRITE FOGGY AND KAREN SADLY FUCKING IN A CHURCH WHILE THEY MOURN MATT THIS YEAR I STG
do you accept prompts:
uhhhhhh I have on occasion written a prompt for someone before but it’s pretty rare and I have enough trouble writing the shit I come up with in my own head lol. but never say never?
upcoming story you are most excited to write:
I’ve got a bit of the Bobbi/Kara Warehouse fic written and it’s nice to go back to that world. Also I’m weirdly excited about the Cam/Donna smutty character study I mentioned above, I have a lot of what I think are good ideas for it and it’ll be fun.
tagging @unwind-myself @swiftzeldas @swashbucklery @loved-the-stars-too-fondly and, if you want to, you!

U, X, and Y! :)
a pairing you might like to write for, but haven't tried yet.
curt + curt + curt + curt. for some reason i have written very minimal curt, even though he is one of my all-time faves. but maybe this is why i’ve been hesitant to give it a shot that feels worthy of him as a character
i’d really love to take a stab at billy sometime, too. (i realize this sentence can be taken literally and i am okay with that.)
a character you enjoy making suffer.
uhhhhhhh ‘enjoy’ is such a tricky word. do i enjoy making frank sit in a big broody pile of feelings and do i enjoy putting karen in high-stress situations to both prove she’s a badass and make frank spazz out a little? okay fine yes maybe i do.
a character you want to protect.

The first season of Daredevil is supposed to be set in 2014
Tumblr media
Throughout its 3 seasons, it is established that Foggy Nelson is a theater nerd
Tumblr media
Seriously, look how good his acting skills are
Tumblr media
Karen catches him singing (badly), and I doubt this was an isolated occurrence because Foggy gives no fucks about how much of a dork he is or how non-existent his musical talents are
Tumblr media
As a lawyer, Foggy is morally obligated to like all things about American government. It's a fact, look it up
Tumblr media
After reviewing these facts, I have determined with 100% certainty that when Hamilton came to Broadway in 2015, Foggy Nelson became its number one fan and his life was never the same
Thank you for coming to my Tiny TedTalk

Ok, how about what are your favorite Marvel movie characters from the MCU? Is that narrowed down enough?
Yep, that should be more workable! So, I’m also going to count the Netflix shows and the Sony-Marvel movies as part of the MCU, just because otherwise none of my actual super-duper favorites would be on this list.
So, without further ado, here we go!
1. Miguel O’Hara.
Tumblr media
LOOK, CAMEOS COUNT, OKAY? Miguel is my favorite MCU character because I’m Predictable and In Love. And though his scene was short, I adore him. Fingers crossed for more of him in the MCU and more of that lovely, cute voice he’s got! And please, please let him take off his mask in the next movie. I’m dying to see what he looks like in the Spider-Verse style! In short, I adore Miguel. I really do. Even if he never shows up in the MCU again, he’ll always have me wrapped around his little finger, devoted.
2. Peter Parker.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All versions of Peter Parker, pretty universally, are the sweetest, kindest, humblest, funniest, and most down-to-earth guys ever. I have so much love for Peter Parker in all his incarnations, and he holds a very special place in my heart. There’s a reason why he’s one of the most famous, popular, and long-lasting Marvel characters ever, and why there were movies about him long before the superhero movie genre became even a thing. We love you, Peter, to the moon and back!
3. Miles Morales.
Tumblr media
So, yeah, my top three are Spider-People, but can you blame me? Their storytelling is so special and unique, and always so grounded in reality and about being heroes even when we come from nothing. Miles Morales’ MCU debut in Into The Spider-Verse is, without a doubt, the greatest ever in Marvel history. I have so, so much love for Miles, and everything he does makes me smile, makes me proud, and makes me believe in the goodness of myself and the people around me. He’s the best!
4. Sam Wilson.
Tumblr media
.Humorous, strong-hearted, and handsome, Sam Wilson has it all. The infinitely superior Captain America, I love Sam Wilson and have since that first scene between him and Steve. He’s so genuine and kind, while also being strong and commanding. He knows how to lead and how to take orders, how to stand up to authority and how to trust that he’s being led by wise people, so he has this wonderful, balanced head on his shoulders, and a fantastic sense of humor to boot. I’m so excited for Falcon and Winter Soldier (despite not actually liking Bucky Barnes), and I’m really happy to see Sam take on the iconic status of Captain America. You deserve it, darling.
5. Foggy Nelson.
Tumblr media
This guy has been put through the wringer, but remains such a gentle, charitable, kind spirit. I love Foggy Nelson for doing his damnest every single day to try and help his fellow human beings, and for remaining hopeful, hilarious, and heartfelt in all he does. He’s so giving and so strong, so sensitive and so willing to share. He’s open and talkative, clever, intelligent, and emotionally mature. I love him to death, and I wish there were lots more characters like Foggy Nelson, and a lot more love for him in the world.
6. Thor, Post-Ragnarok.
Tumblr media
Okay, full transparency: I fucking HATED Thor. I really hated his guts. Everything about him bothered me, from his faux-Shakespearian speech to his hair (and bleached brows?) to his weird relationship with women to his fixation on Loki and being ‘the best’. It was all gross chauvinistic bullshit, in my opinion, so I eschewed him entirely. I can’t honestly remember watching any of the Thor movies (and I think I entirely missed Dark World), but then came Ragnarok. And I knew I had a new favorite.
What can I say? I love a good, dumb, well-intentioned golden retriever of a man. I still have some issues with how he’s written sometimes, but, largely speaking, I think he’s great now that Ragnarok has come along and Marvel has allowed Thor to have some fun and a better sense of humor and playfulness. He’s a smart dumb jock, and is relentlessly kind, something I always appreciate. Cheers!
Also Taika Said Gay Rights And Thor Is At The VERY LEAST Bi According To The Taika-Verse And I Only Listen To Taika So. Gay Rights, Babey!
 7. Oh And Also, Grandmaster.
Tumblr media
He counts. He counts. I love Grandmaster. No irony, no bullshit, nothing except pure love. He’s fantastic and funny and I love him. I’m sure we’ll see no more of him in the MCU, but [Casablanca voice] we’ll always have Ragnarok...
8. Scott Lang.
Tumblr media
The MCU wallows too much in seriousness and muscle-men and ‘who’s the strongest’ contests. Scott Lang eschews all of that and just has fun. He’s a gentle, dedicated father, an intelligent, creative con-artist, and a hell of a close-up magician. All the Ant-Man movies are such genuine, real fun that it’s hard to have a bad time watching them. I’m so happy they got Paul Rudd for the part, because I just know I wouldn’t love Scott as much if it wasn’t for Paul and that famous schnoz of his. World’s Greatest Grandma indeed.
Honorable Mention to Spider-Ham for being the absolute funniest thing the MCU has ever created. Oh my god.
And that’s sort of about it! I like a lot of them, but for me to really love a character, they have to stand out to me as someone of genuine goodness, kindness, and, honestly, levity from all the dark, brooding anger of the MCU, which has me largely burned out (see: why I didn’t watch Endgame). A recurring trope with a lot of these characters is that they’re the relief characters, the sillier ones, the gentler ones. I love them for that.
So, if I’ve forgotten anyone, it doesn’t necessarily mean I don’t love them or they’re not a favorite, I just might’ve blipped over them while trying to remember, well, the whole host of the MCU!
Thanks for asking!

Fic: For You I’d Bleed Myself Dry (Daredevil)
I’ll give neither of them any more distress in their lives. That’s the one line I’ve drawn. I’ve caused them too much pain as it is, and they’re still suffering from it, because I know they’re still grieving for me, long after that should’ve ended. But that’ll still end for each of them, sooner or later. I have to believe it will. And then I’ll never hurt either of them again.
I know I shouldn’t follow them as much as I do, though, again, I make damn sure there’s no chance either will ever have an inkling of it. It’s the one indulgence I still permit myself, the one way I’m still selfish, still won’t heed what’s right for those I love, same way Matt Murdock was selfish for getting too involved with them in the first place, thinking he could wreck havoc with their lives just because he did each of them one big favor.
Because I will say I kept Foggy good, in that time period right after law school where he might have otherwise succumbed to Landman and Zack. Though maybe he would’ve still broken free of that on his own, still found a way to stay a good man even when he finally settled at a more professional firm. To still believe the system will work, if he can just make it. At least I hope so. Irrational as it is, I can’t stand the thought of him ever not believing that.
Yet he’s so much older now. Sometimes, when I’m not following him, I still think of the guy who was sitting on the other bed when I first walked into that dorm room, with that grin I could hear and that bright laugh and that determination to make me share in both, and I miss him so much it physically hurts. But that Foggy Nelson doesn’t exist anymore, not any more than Matt Murdock. The man that replaced him is still cheerful, still warm, and still bringing that to the people around him, if they’ll accept it. But he no longer has that light heart.
It’s not even just me that took that from him; the world did it too. He’s seen so much ugliness. I think he’s even figured out on his own that Wilson Fisk is going to be bad news for him. And yet he still stands strong, still fights the good fight, still speaks his mind even to the boss who cut him down when he first attempted to help her, still meets everyone with kindness when he can, still runs to help when he sees someone down.
I actually keep more physical distance from him than I do from Karen. Unlike her, he got a chance to learn how to listen for me, so I have to. But much of the time, it’s just enough to hear his voice. He isn’t even as talkative as he used to be, but he still talks more than most people. And while he’s cultured his voice in some ways, used it in different ways when he’s playing the professional respectable lawyer, at base, it will always be the same. It will always be the best part of his heart, the part that kept my own heart warm for so many years.
It’s only now, when I’ve given all of him up, that I can admit I wanted more than that, though. That I wanted him as I wanted Karen, that I was that selfish. That when he clapped me on the shoulder, I wanted softer touches from his hands. That I never got a hug from him that I didn’t want to go on longer. That I wanted to hear that voice speaking only to me, in a more intimate setting.
I still want all of it, and more than ever. I was never going to stop loving Foggy anyway, and that I wouldn’t be ashamed of. But to be in love with him would be bad enough, if I also wasn’t in love with Karen in a way I don’t think I was back when I first kissed her.
I’ve always known Foggy, always understood exactly what he was and is. Karen, I now know, didn’t allow that, not any more than I did. Like me she hid the parts of herself she thought would get her rejected. I’m not sure she isn’t right there, any more than I am about whether she would’ve rejected me, had she known when we first met. Not that anything could get me to reject her now, even though I’m pretty sure there are details to her secrets I don’t know yet.
That’s what I’ve always been missing about her: the details. My first perception of her was much like the literal image of her in my world on fire: not wrong, but limited. Now I know where she’s been going and what she’s been doing on her darkest days and nights. I know she has darkness in her, just like I do, and like me she’s been driven to take it the darkness she fights. Though she’s trying to find a way to use it, without living in it. I pray she’ll succeed where I failed.
Because unlike Matt Murdock, she has enough in her brighter side to be worth preserving. If I am the darkness, and Foggy is the light, she’s somewhere in between. Her kindness, her sweetness, how soft and vulnerable and, yes, scared she is, that’s all real. And like him, she tries to do everything she can from her desk with her words. Finding out the secrets and exposing them to the world, or just to the people who might be able to do something with them. Calling for things to done in the name of pure righteousness, instead of the name of the law, something not better only because supposed righteousness can sometimes be wrong. In the end, she might accomplish more than either Foggy or me.
And she strode that path all on her own. I merely got her out of jail and then saved her life at the beginning of it. She would never make a speech to me about how she only ever needed Matt Murdock, because while I don’t think she likes being alone, she doesn’t actually need other people.
Though maybe, had I been a better man, she could’ve accepted me as her companion on it. I’m her protector anyway, or at least one of them, the one she doesn’t know about. But even now, when she goes home, I long to go with her. To sit close with her and make her laugh, to hold her in my arms when she gets sad or shaken, to kiss her hair and her lips, to go further than that, to do the things I passed up my chance to do. It’s for the better we didn’t, because it would’ve hurt her more, in the end. But what I wouldn’t give to have even the memories of it.
Maybe that’s the worst thing I did to Foggy and Karen, keeping them from each other. They could’ve had a happy life together, if I hadn’t distracted her from him. She was never indifferent to him, and he would’ve said yes for sure. Now they can’t even deal with each other properly because of me.
So each of them has turned halfway towards someone else, one to a friend with benefits, the other to a man loyal without them. And who knows, maybe someday Marci Stahl will get over her fear of commitment, or Frank Castle might even allow himself to fall in love again. Not that either of them could deserve the treasure they’ll be getting, not any more than I would, but maybe they’ll make them happy. Marci’s got a lot less bullshit than any of us, after all, and at least Frank let Karen see all of his clearly from the start.
By the time any of that happens, I doubt I’ll still be alive, which is a relief to think. Not even just because of them, but because of what I now know I must do. And because of them, I know I will do it. I likely would’ve at least tried anyway, for the sake of the city. But otherwise, there’d be the question of whether I could bring myself to go through with it, with the damnation of my own soul. Instead, I know that when the moment comes, I need only think of the two of them, and what Fisk would do to them, and then I won’t hesitate.
Which is the greatest reason of all that Foggy and Karen can never know I didn’t die at Midland Circle. They would neither of them forgive themselves if they ever found out I’d made such a sacrifice for them, not even if they had nothing to do with it. Let them instead chalk everything up to the bad guys all turning on each other, her reporting what she’ll have every reason to believe is the truth, maybe the two of them able to meet for drinks and be okay with each other’s company in their mutual relief. When they think of me that evening, let it be with sadness, if it must, but no more than that.
And let them sleep soundly on whatever night, be it the same night Fisk falls or some other one, that I perish with their names on my lips. The man once within him they loved will be long dead, and the Devil should be of no concern to them.

peter parker and the defenders (and foggy and karen)
peter parker meeting the defenders and saving their asses and just being the purest being ever is like? my favorite thing?
like, danny and luke, once they find out he’s 15, would team up to mother-hen and make sure he’s eating enough, and wait what do you mean you just took on the entire russian mob by yourself, what the fuck?
jessica would be disgusted by how bright and happy he is all the time, until he reveals his reason. “yeah, the world is dark and cruel and i’ve lost a fuck ton of people. i’ve been beaten within an inch of my life, watched people i love die, failed more times than i can count. but you know what? i’m not the only person in the world. i don’t need a “better coping mechanism” because helping people cope is my coping mechanism, and i’m okay with that.” she looks at him in a new light after that.
matt finding out his age and trying to talk him out of being a vigilante, because he knows firsthand what that shit does to your mind. and then he comes to the crushing realization that peter does too. he knows what it’s like to lose someone, what it’s like to have a responisbility even if people hate you. so he just kind of sighs and offers him an internship at nelson and murdock, which peter gladly accepts.
foggy and karen don’t know why matt hired this random child as an intern at first, but he seems smart and the way matt describes him, he’s very enthusastic and just wants to help. upon meeting him, they immediately demand where matt found this child, because what the fuck matt, he’s so pure and loving, he literally brought us cookies the first time he came here and even offered to clean the goddamn office, and, he’s so polite, matt, he called karen “ms. page” and me “mr. nelson, sir.”
matt just sighs because peter probably isn’t even doing it on purpose, but he literally has every person wrapped around his little finger.
and yeah, maybe the defenders (and foggy and karen) were a bit apprehensive at first, because they don’t know him and he’s just a teenager and they’re worried they’re going to fuck up his life because they seem to be magnets for trouble, but somehow this child has become a permanent fixture in their lives and they’re all at least a little glad that there’s at least one bright spot in the constant darkness that is their lives, something to remind them what they’re fighting for.

pluckyredhead replied to your post: Foggy Nelson + justice
Okay but I WANT your long messy meta!
Oof, you probably don’t, but let’s see if I can collect my thoughts.
So, we can agree that Matt is effectively an Avatar Of Justice, right? Besides the incredibly obious Justice Is Blind aspect, he spends a lot of time balancing the scales in Hell’s Kitchen, deciding who deserves redemption (Frank, Elektra) and who doesn’t (Fisk). But while he’s an incarnation of justice, he’s certainly not an incarnation of law. Sure, he’s a lawyer, but particularly in the show, his law career is there to show his friction with the legal system more than anything else.
He’s idealistic about the legal system--wants to defend innocent clients, wants to change things--he’s a nerd and when he’s not gallivanting off to fight/commit crime, he’s a good lawyer. Except that he’s not, because the law isn’t what matters to him. The law merely tends to dovetail with many--but not all--of his principles, the things he believes are just. He’s not the Devil because he’s a terrifying monster. He’s a Devil because the Devil is there to punish sinners in the tradition he comes from, a consequence of heaven’s justice.
Foggy, on the other hand--I wouldn’t call him an avatar of law to act as a foil to Matt, because he’s much too human for that. However, he’s a really good representation, especially in his relationship with Matt, of the legal system, imperfect and trying, and its friction with that pure the-good-are-rewarded-the-bad-are-punished justice that Matt represents.
Because Foggy’s a good lawyer! Maybe no courtroom star yet, but give him time. He’s good at dancing around the law in ways that make it obvious he knows it well. And he cares about it! He wants those who commit crimes to go to jail and he wants those innocent of them to go free. (This sounds like the same thing as Matt’s philosophy but it is definitely not.) He defends clients to the best of his ability even when he knows they broke the law because he also believes in the law that says they should get representation in their corner. If the court acquits someone he believes to be guilty, he’d be upset, mad, maybe a little worried, but it doesn’t conflict with his worldview: within the confines of the law, the judge or jury made the right call, because there was reasonable doubt.
In Matt’s worldview, this person did something wrong, and didn’t receive justice for it.
Like, I think about Frank. Laying Matt’s projection issues aside for a moment, he chooses to take on Frank’s case because, apart from the law, Frank wasn’t really doing anything wrong in his estimation. He was committing an evil, but against bad men. He was an agent of justice, somewhere close to being outside of needing justice to be visited on him because he was being an agent of it. Matt doesn’t think he’s innocent of the crimes that the laws say he committed. He just ... kind of disagrees that they’re crimes.
Whereas Foggy, while defending Frank to the best of his ability, thinks Frank is completely in the wrong, because he broke the law, and killed people, and he doesn’t think of him as an agent of justice because Matt’s framework of justice and his are worlds apart.
Anyway, the combination is interesting, so thank you for the original prompt that got me thinking about it!
